Chapter 137 Small Steps

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I gave Ichika a cloak that could hide her shape. It was an early model I once made to keep Ethelena safe from men’s eyes.

”Was I… hard to look at, degozaru?” Ichika asked. She must have felt unsure because of what I did.

”It’s the other way. I don’t want other guys to see you like that, so I want to cover you. Besides, you don’t like clothes that show a lot, right?” I said.

Yes, a selfish part of me wanted to keep her for myself, but the main reason was that she did not like such things. Her ears and tail had been down the whole time, even if she did not notice it. Seeing her that sad made me feel bad for making her wear that kind of Equipment.

Ichika looked a bit surprised, then took the cloak with slow hands and wrapped it around herself. Her shoulder armor was wide, so she could not simply pull it over, but she made it work by leaving the armor outside.

But she soon took off the cloak and gave it back.

”My bad, you didn’t like it?” I asked.

”No, it’s just… if I hide my skin, the Equipment loses its power…”

 ”You’re kidding.”

Why did the maker put the power there of all places? The smith must have been a pervert. Well, it would not be made like this by anyone normal.

”Hm, for now it is better as it is. Let us move on, noja,” Yohira said.

 ”You’re cruel,” I muttered.

”I was born an oni, noja. By the way, is it not time to take off your mask?” she added.

I did as Yohira said and removed the mask. I felt better once I could breathe freely, but thinking about Ichika made me worry again. When I looked, she still did not remove hers.

 ”What’s wrong?” I asked.

”Showing my face like this is too shameful, degozaru,” she said.

Ethelena, who once charged into my room in revealing clothing, was standing right there. Somehow, hiding her face while not hiding her body made her seem even more like a weirdo.

”But Ichi, it looks more pervy if you hide only your face while not hiding your body,” Ethelena said.

 ”Hey, stop,” I snapped.

She had said exactly what I was thinking. Ichika broke down on her knees from the shock. She put her hands on the floor and bowed her head… What now?

”…Tatara-sama, do you think the same as Ethelena-sama?” she asked.

She spoke in her normal voice, so the damage was deep. I did not know how to answer. I had thought the same, so I could not cover for her.

Maybe she saw it on my face, because she took off the mask. Her face was red from shame. It was a cute and sweet reaction, but my worry for her was stronger.

”…Ichika, I’ll make new Equipment for you later,” I said.

 ”…Please do, Tatara-sama,” she replied.

I could make a ninja outfit with Mithril Silver Thread and then use a king’s gem to boost it. For flight, I could add a Queen’s Cutting Feather from a harpy queen drop. More speed for Ichika would help us a lot.

When we reached the forty-first floor, the enemies became harpies. Ethelena and Ichika went ahead, and like before, a queen rushed us.

But this time, Ichika was with us… or rather, giving her a weapon made of Mithril Silver Thread caused a huge problem.

Ichika spread the Mithril Silver Thread like a net without thinking, and the queen flew right into it. She was cut into small cubes, like some kind of meat.

The pieces turned to dust as the dungeon absorbed them, but Ethelena and Ichika still got covered in the queen’s blood. The cloth was not normal, so it did not stain, but we still needed to wash it before it began to smell.

They came back covered in blood, so I pulled a towel from my inventory and wiped their heads. The towel turned red at once and had to be thrown away.

”Master… you won’t touch my chest by ‘accident’ while wiping my body, degozaru?” Ichika said.

”I’m not a fool. I would never do that to companions who are hurt in the mind. And I’m only wiping your head. Do your own body,” I said.

”Hmm… you are not kind, degozaru.”

Her eyes were dead as she said this, but I had no mood for that. I even felt too sorry to look straight at her.

”In a way, it’s good you changed clothes, Ichika. Your ninja outfit would have been ruined,” I said.

Ichika blinked, then let out a long breath of relief. Washing might not have saved it.

”Hey, I’m not fine either,” Ethelena said.

”That’s true, but your Equipment is Mithril, so this kind of dirt won’t stick,” I answered while drying her hair with a new towel.

Mithril silver always has mana protection. Water and dirt slide right off. Ethelena’s Equipment was already clean, and only her hair and skin were dirty. No wonder Mithril was used in medical places; it was a magic metal known for being clean.

She looked a bit upset, so to cheer her up, I gave her soft chest a little squeeze. She let out a sweet sound that made my body react, but I held it back. This was not the place.

”Um, you two. Please don’t start here,” Tatia said.

She must have heard Ethelena’s voice. I knew, but if I did not cheer Ethelena up now, she would make me pay for it later. On the bed, to be exact.

With Ethelena leading in a good mood again, we moved without trouble. Against queens, she was now untouchable in the air. Tatia followed with strong attacks on the confused queens. Yohira dodged with White-Blade Flow and countered with Steal, pulling out feathers—it looked painful. I hit groups with artillery to gain a bit of experience. I was close to level fifty. Ichika guarded me and used White-Blade Flow sometimes, likely to level the skill. She used her skills freely because the egg could heal us.

When we reached the forty-fifth floor, the enemies became spirits. We went at the spirit kings of many elements to gain more experience. It was slow but steady. I would reach fifty before the forty-ninth floor.

Then Tatia made a wild suggestion.

”Those spirit kings use only element attacks. So… if we keep taking their attacks, can’t we raise our physical or magic defense skills safely?” she said.

To be honest, I was shocked. It was true that, except for Ichika, our Equipment could absorb element attacks. But I had never thought about using that to raise skill levels. In a game, sure, I would have done it. But this was real. Getting hit by punches or magic was scary, and forcing yourself to take hit after hit was not easy. Tatia said it only because she was a tank.

”I think it’s possible, but I don’t want to suggest it,” I said.

”Well, Tatara would have to watch us get hit again and again, noja. Your mind would not last,” Yohira said.

I had taken hits for Ethelena before because her defense was higher than mine. Even now, I could not bring myself to let my friends be hurt. Watching Tatia get hit by that Orichalcum Golem again and again had made me feel sick.

”For Magic Defense, we could let Ethelena use Lonisera for about an hour. It should raise the skill safely…” I began.

”You’re not thinking about my mind at all, right?” Ethelena cut in.

I tried another idea, and she hit me with a comment. Yes, shooting your friends over and over felt wrong. Still, if we took Lonisera at the lowest power head-on, our Magic Defense would not break. It was a safe way to grow the skill, so I kept it in mind.

”In any case, let’s drop Tatia’s idea for now. We will still get hit many times later, noja,” Yohira said.

”If we meet another monster like the Immortal King, our skill will rise whether we like it or not,” I added.

I agreed with Yohira, and we set Tatia’s idea aside. I had a bad feeling that we would meet more strange cases like that. On the surface, we had even met that Sieve woman.

Tatia accepted our answer and let it go. I felt a bit lighter.

After that, we attacked the spirit kings without holding back and raised our attack skills. We used the egg to heal and used skills freely to grow faster. I reached level fifty and got Magic Defense Boost.

As we were about to leave the forty-fifth floor, Yohira spoke to me.

”Tatara, my Appraisal is now complete, noja.”

 ”That was fast,” I said.

I had needed my whole life, with an Early Talent bonus, to finish it only recently.

”I used it many, many times. Now, I want to ask about my next skill, noja,” she said.

”You want a skill for your free slot. I think Agility Boost or Stealth Step,” I said.

”Hmm, Stealth Step for me, noja?”

There would be enemies in the dark ahead who could find us by sound. Our steps would give us away, so Stealth Step would help stop ambushes. I planned to get it too, but I wanted Yohira to pick up as many skills as she could before Sublimation of Existence. Also, adding an assassin part to her build now could push her power higher.

”It sounds good, but I will take Agility Boost this time, noja. If I raise my status, I can handle more cases,” she said.

She changed her status. More speed meant more safe moves and more strikes. Yohira was the strongest against living beings, but any enemy that Concept Appraisal did not work on had to be faced with her own strength. No level of physical power ever felt enough.

Soon, Ethelena and Tatia also reached level fifty. Tatia had already planned to take Steal for status-up items, so she finished that fast.

The problem was Ethelena. She had taken every assassin skill already. Her sniping skills were complete too, so I was unsure what to give her.

”Tatara, why not give Ethelena skill for close combat, noja?” Yohira suggested.

 ”What, close combat!?” Ethelena yelped.

 ”Oh… I see,” I said.

Yohira was thinking ahead. If she could not use Lonisera or her mana gun, she would still be able to fight up close. With the right weapon, it would work well with her assassin build and deal huge damage. If she also learned Tsubame Gaeshi, she could strike from behind with two combo hits at two and a half times power right from the start. That final power would be scary.

”I get your point, Torakuma, but… I could not even hold a one-hand sword before. I needed both hands, and even then it was hard,” Ethelena said.

”Your level is higher now. You should be fine,” I said.

Back then, her status had been below average. Now, thanks to the Earth Mother Series, it had grown a lot. She should be able to handle it.

Also, something had been on my mind.

”I want Ethelena to take Sword Aptitude,” I said.

That fool had once called her sword talent the best. I wanted to see how great it was. The Acting Head of Family was at home now too, so it was a good chance for her to learn the basics.

 ”Why swords though?” she asked.

”With Yohira, Tatia, and Mother-in-law around, it’s a good time to learn the basics,” I said.

 ”I… see.”

Her reaction was not good. Something was behind it.

”Do you dislike swords for some reason?” I asked.

 She hesitated, then slowly said,

”You know my dad was an explorer, right?”

”Yeah. He and my parents fought side by side in the Grand Hunt,” I said.

I had learned that from the guard captain and the spirits of the Baral couple. Her parents must have fought with them. That idiot might even know more about the Baral family, since he was crazy about explorers.

”My dad used a sword in the dungeon. When I was small, I watched him train with it in the garden,” she said.

Her memories came out slowly. She almost never spoke about her parents because she had not moved past the pain.

”I copied him and swung a stick beside him. He laughed and told me to stop because it was dangerous,” she said.

 ”I see,” I said softly.

She spoke with a gentle, far look, but her right hand held the cloth near her heart. Like me, thinking of her lost parents hurt her chest. Even so, she went on.

”I sometimes hit myself by mistake, and my mom would laugh and take care of me. Dad promised to teach me the sword when I grew up.”

Ethelena’s voice began to shake. I felt we should stop, but she refused.

”I… Dad told me to hide that day. I stayed in the closet… Dad cut many soldiers, but they caught Mom… When Dad dropped his sword, the soldiers stabbed him with spears!”

As I had guessed, Baral fought to protect his family. If a strong father was killed right before her eyes, no wonder she could not touch a sword.

”Then they tore Mom’s clothes, and right in front of me—!”

”That’s enough, Ethelena. You don’t have to remember more,” I said.

I hated myself for causing her to recall such a deep wound. Why had I suggested swords without considering her past?

I pulled her close. Normally, I would let her hear my heartbeat, but with the mask covering me, I could not.

 Yohira, however, spoke different words.

”Ethelena, I am sorry for making you recall such pain. But I will ask once more. Do you plan to let your father’s sword art vanish from this world, noja?”

Her words were hard. Ethelena shook. I should have stopped Yohira, but something inside told me not to. If I only sheltered Ethelena, would that not steal her chance to stand up and grow strong?

Reaching out a hand was something anyone close could do. But the strength to stand again had to come from her alone.

If she chose to give up and live like a doll, I would accept it. I had saved her back then, so I would stay with her. But taking away her chance to rise again would be wrong.

Baral might scold me for this, yet I could not throw away Yohira’s rare gift of pushing Ethelena forward.

”As long as you live, your parents live in your memory. But if you die, only your child will carry that proof. If you pass your father’s sword art to many others, will it not become eternal, noja?” Yohira said.

 ”Dad’s… sword art?” Ethelena whispered.

”You saw all his basic forms. Even if not the real battle art, you can share what you saw. You can keep your father alive, noja.”

There was a saying in my past life: a person dies when they are forgotten. Yohira meant the same. As long as Ethelena passed on the sword art, Baral’s proof of life would remain. The same would be true for her.

Her shaking slowly grew smaller. At last it stopped. She gently stepped away from me and faced Yohira.

Tatia and Ichika stayed silent. They knew not to add words here.

”Will you lock those memories away until they fade? Or will you carry the pain and let them live forever? Choose, Ethelena,” Yohira said.

Her voice was firm but held kindness. She wanted to spark Ethelena’s inner strength. She knew her well.

Ethelena looked down, her shoulders shaking. Her hands were tight fists, nails close to cutting her skin. Then she lifted her head and moved her status screen. I already knew what she chose.

”I… will remember Dad’s sword art,” she said.

Her quiet voice reached us with clear resolve.

”It hurts, but not all those memories are pain,” she added.

She turned to me. Her eyes were red with tears.

”Tatara, when we go back, please help me get a sword.”

”All right. Tell me what kind of sword your father used. I will make it as close as I can,” I said.

 ”Okay!”

Her smile still carried a trace of strain, but she smiled. I could not win against Yohira in heart matters.

I looked at Yohira, and she smiled with pride. In matters of the heart, I really could not win against her.

Since three party members had reached the level cap, we gave them the egg so they could focus on raising skill levels. Tatia raised her luck to one hundred fast, then stole king gems from spirit kings, and I finished them off. Many times, I was hit by heavy magic, and without meaning to, I trained the very skill Tatia had wanted to level. Magic Defense Boost even rose one rank. It proved useful—just useful.

By the time we cleared the forty-ninth floor, I reached level fifty-one. The reason was that the spirit kings summoned more spirit kings instead of lesser spirits. They kept calling each other in a chain, and we got more experience than planned. Some status-boost skills also reached rank five.

When I finished those, I planned to take assassin skills next. If I ever had to go alone, I would need them.

We reached the boss room and used a teleport crystal to leave. Tatia still had a strict curfew, so she left with a sad face.

”Ichika, I want to give Tatia a lunch box next time. Is that okay?” I asked.

”I do not mind, degozaru. To be honest, seeing her miss our food so much gives me guilt, degozaru,” Ichika said.

I remembered Tatia saying the dorm food did not suit her, so I checked with Ichika. She agreed. Even she felt sorry for Tatia.

On the way home, Ichika remembered we were low on some seasonings, so we all stopped at the commercial district. We had a fixed plan for vegetables, but not for spices. Whirlwind had strong crafting culture, so spices were cheap, close to Earth prices. If taken outside the city, the price shot up, so they were banned from export to protect other markets. But since crafted food was popular inside the city, they could use all the stock here.

Ethelena also cared a lot about spices, and she and Ichika picked them with great focus. I learned they each had their favorite shop and were sharing their top picks. I chose spices for my own craft ale and tried new mixes.

Yohira was surprised again to see there was no shichimi. Maybe one day, once trade with Hizuru grew, this shop would sell it. I was already looking forward to that day.

We left the shop and walked through the row of food stalls when familiar voices called out. They were the stall owners and street performers from the day the merchant guild master asked me for an abacus, the same people who argued over the plaza space. I greeted them back and bought some skewers that looked good for snacks with drinks for the acting head and Mother-in-law. The street performers looked from Ethelena to the rest of us and cheered loudly. There was no ill will, but it still made my face go red.

Right then, Ethelena gave me a quick kiss. My mind stopped, and I froze. The performers roared with joy, and even Yohira joined them. That box-pushing demon.

After all that, we got home without trouble. I felt tired, but it was just the kind that comes from too much attention. Anyone would be drained after reactions like that from a crowd.

Training was still going on in the yard. To my surprise, the idiot and the acting head were in a mock fight. I guessed it was a mock fight. There was no way a simple form practice needed them to hit each other like that.

 ”We’re back,” Mother-in-law said.

 ”Oh, we’re home,” I replied.

”We are home, noja,” Yohira said.

Somehow, Little Tatara and Cornremu were sitting on her lap getting petted. I had no idea what was going on.

”It seems your friends will train a little longer. Why don’t you wash up first?” Mother-in-law said.

 ”You’re right. I will,” I said.

I headed to the couple bath. Yohira and Ichika dragged Ethelena to the cypress bath instead, which honestly saved me.

When I came back to the living room clean, the mock fight had ended. The idiot sat at the edge wiping sweat and drinking cold honey lemon water. The acting head was also lightly sweaty and wiped his face with a cloth. How could that fool make the acting head sweat when the acting head had drained him to exhaustion earlier?

The acting head looked pleased, which meant the idiot’s katana skill had grown at a strange speed. He was getting stronger without even entering a dungeon. I did not get it.

 ”Hey,” the idiot said.

”…Hey. Had enough of teaching him katana?” I asked.

He gave a weak laugh. So things were rough.

”His body is human, but he deals with our sword forms using skill alone. What is that?” he said.

”Hearing it again, that’s insane. I knew he had talent, but not like this,” I said.

”I misjudged him too… If I hadn’t asked you to make a katana he couldn’t kill with, one of us would be dead by now,” he said.

So they had gone that serious. What was he?

”Also, I can feel his katana skill getting close to complete,” he added.

 ”That’s too fast,” I said.

”Partly because I’m teaching him, yes. But he’s a rare genius. The way he builds his forms shows natural gift. If he had a body like mine, I might lose,” he said.

 ”You’re kidding…”

”No joke, no flattery. He’s a kind of monster,” he said.

I looked at the idiot across the yard. He was happily talking sword with Hinagiku. He looked normal, but the talent inside him made even the sword demon beside me call him gifted.

My lips lifted without thinking. I had given him the first katana I forged with Master. He needed to reach this level. I wanted him to become a sword saint of this city. I needed him to.

 ”You look happy,” he said.

”Yes, I am. I gave that katana to a true monster. As a katana smith, that’s the best feeling,” I said.

He laughed. “Nice. You’re crazy in a good way.”

He smiled with real joy. It seemed he now saw me and the idiot as the same kind.

Soon after, he returned to Central Administration, and Hinagiku walked the idiot home.

Since Ichika had come with us to the dungeon, I cooked like when it was just me and Ethelena living together.

Unlike me, who washed fast, the women took longer in the bath. And of course, they would not want to sweat again right after washing.

I wondered what to make, when the Acting Head came into the kitchen wearing a samue. He carried fresh soba and a lot of seafood. So, tempura soba it was.

I understood and began making the tempura batter. I had done it before, so it was quick. The acting head cleaned and dried the seafood. He was skilled, as I had seen when he cut tuna. I thought about forging him a sashimi knife called the Kaisengiri.

I heated oil and boiled water for the soba, then remembered I had no soba broth ready. I had been thinking like in my past life and had no stock.

”Fufu, Tatara-san… you mean this?” Mother-in-law said.

I turned and saw Mother-in-law holding a large bottle. No way.

”I just used the teleport gate to go to the Torakuma lands and got soba broth from the head cook,” she said.

 ”You’re the best, Mother-in-law,” I said.

”Hmph, I only did it because you are family,” she said.

”Even so, we should always show thanks, right, Acting Head?” Ethelena said.

 ”Mm!?” the acting head choked.

 He coughed. Was there dust?

”…Tatara-san, what did Ethelena just call you?” Mother-in-law asked.

”Uh, acting head of family,” I said.

”I see. You didn’t notice,” she said.

 Notice what?

We talked as I fried tempura and cooked soba. With no allergies in this world, cooking was easier. The god’s blessing of “eat what you love” worked here. Of course, no pufferfish or eel with poison.

”I want to try fried pufferfish, but the liver is deadly…” I said.

”Then use Yakukiri and eat it?” Mother-in-law suggested.

 ”Mother-in-law, are you a genius?”

”It is said to be tasty, but do not go that far, Tatara-dono,” the acting head said.

If my parents had lived, dinner might have felt like this.

We chatted and cooked together until the women came back from the bath. I checked who wanted hot or cold soba. I had cold soba with tempura, and so did Yohira. Ethelena, Ichika, and the Torakuma couple had hot soba topped with tempura.

We greeted each other and began eating. First, I tasted the soba without dipping it. The flavor of the grain and the fragrance of the noodles filled my mouth and nose, richer than anything I ever had in my past life. It had to be pure buckwheat, made at a high level. Next, I dipped the noodles halfway into the broth made by the Torakuma family’s chef and slurped without biting midway. The broth had deep umami—strong enough that it would overwhelm the soba if it weren’t pure buckwheat. But together, they reached a harmony that was hard to put into words.

The noodles, easy to chew through without binders, slid into my stomach one after another. I noticed I had eaten more than half without touching the tempura.

I corrected that and took a piece of tempura—only seafood, no pumpkin or peppers. I chose the sillago. After dipping it into the broth and taking a bite, the soft batter and tender fish delighted my mouth. The light white meat soaked up flavor, and chewing well broke down the tiny bones safely.

With the taste of tempura still in my mouth, I slurped more soba. The aroma of the soba blended with the seafood umami beautifully.

Next was squid. Compared to white fish, its chew was far stronger. Raw, it would be sticky, but with the right heat, it became pleasantly firm. I ate it with salt, which cut the oil and lifted the flavor. Then I added grated radish to the broth for a lighter taste.

Last was the classic—shrimp. I only dipped it lightly, leaving the batter crisp while giving the surface some broth flavor. After the crunch came the springy bite of the shrimp. Few ingredients could beat shrimp for sheer flavor. It made me want to try a shrimp-tomato-cheese pizza one day—maybe I’d build an oven in the yard.

After enjoying the meal, I drank sobayu mixed with the broth. I still had to build the distiller for tomorrow’s delivery and craft a sword for Ethelena and silver thread for Ichika.

”Oh, right. Acting Head, do you have time tomorrow?” I asked.

 ”For me?” he said.

We would visit the brewery tomorrow. He loved alcohol, so I wanted him to enjoy it.

”I’m going there for work and thought you might join,” I said.

”Mm… I would be honored,” he said.

 ”And me, Tatara-san?” Mother-in-law asked.

He accepted without hesitation, while Mother-in-law protested not being invited.

”I didn’t think you liked alcohol that much,” I said.

 ”I love it,” she replied.

Right, she had wanted drinks with seared dishes. They were a pair of heavy drinkers.

”In that case, I’ll guide both of you. Note that the brewery also serves under the god of alcohol, so please be mindful,” I said.

 ”Understood,” he said.

”Then I must offer some of Hizuru’s sake in return,” she added.

They were thrilled. The brewery folks would surely welcome new drinking companions… probably.

After cleaning up, I headed to the workshop. The distiller this time was huge—a seventy-two-liter still, the largest the brewery used. I wondered if it was necessary, but last time they had told me: “No matter how much we make, if we drink with the god, it’s never enough,” with red faces.

There was one issue. The original order included materials, but this urgent request did not. I would need to supply my own, and I lacked enough steel to match the previous one. I had to use what I had most of.

So, I pulled out a large amount of mithril. For heat to evaporate the liquid, I used a fire core stone Dahlia had acquired, which let me shrink the design. I made the pot tall and used a jet-spray structure midway through to spray the mash, adding multiple trays to improve separation.

For cooling, I used an ice core stone with adjustable cooling to avoid freezing or harming the alcohol. I set Appraisal to monitor the temperatures inside both the pot and cooler. I had not expected the magic-device skills Mia asked me to learn to help here.

I coiled the condenser tubing carefully; I had once been told that this step was key to reducing harshness. Though… who had taught me that?

I added a switch to divert the output into different barrels to make work easier.

I considered making it continuous-distillation, but such high-purity equipment belonged in labs or hospitals. I would ask the city mayor about that later.

It was not the exact item ordered, but I would explain and have them hold it temporarily. I could make a steel one again after buying more materials.

Next was Ichika’s mithril silver thread. The plan was set. I melted the weapon I had given her in the dungeon and reforged it into an ingot. Then I strengthened it with Noble Blood to make blood mithril. Using its shape-memory property, I formed orichalcum into rings. To increase compatibility, I strengthened the orichalcum with Noble Blood to create blood orichalcum.

I wove mithril silver thread into fabric, then made gloves. At the base of each finger, I fitted a blood-orichalcum ring. Wrapping them in blood mithril thread dyed them red—like fresh blood.

”It’s done for now… but what should I name it?”

A noble countess of blood came to mind, but that sounded too villainous. Rafflesia, a parasitic blood-colored flower, was another idea, but giving a smelly flower’s name to Ichika felt wrong.

”My lord, are you all right, degozaru?” Ichika called from the doorway.

 ”Oh, what’s up?” I asked.

”You get lost in work and never return, so I checked. And I sensed you worrying,” she said.

 How good was her radar?

 ”So, what troubles you?”

”…The name for your silver thread,” I admitted.

 She blinked, then smiled.

”You worry for my sake, degozaru.”

”I didn’t want to name it carelessly,” I said.

”That feeling is what matters, degozaru.”

She picked up the unnamed gloves and said,

”Then this child shall be called Impact Wing.”
