Volume 1 Chapter 12 Request to Hunt the Horned Mole

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

We came to a farm outside the town.

There were lots of melon-like plants in the field, but they looked sad.

The green leaves were a little yellow.

Some plants were on the ground, like they were tired.

We saw holes and dirt that was dug up.

That must be the Horn Moles.

The farmers worked hard, but the plants’ roots were showing.

”Are you the adventurers who took the job? Really?”

The farmer looked at us. He didn’t seem to trust us.

I took off my suit and wore a white shirt.

 I don’t look like a fighter.

 And Lifia was with me.

She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She doesn’t look like a fighter either.

 I have an old spear.

I bought it used at the weapon shop.

It’s rusty and bent a little.

 But it cost 20,000 Aurum!

Good weapons cost more than 100,000.

I have to use this for now.

I tied a ribbon on the bottom of the spear.

 It’s not just for show.

 I have a plan.

”Well, it doesn’t matter. Just do the job right.”

Even with this spear, we don’t look like adventurers.

But the farmer didn’t say anything.

I took a breath and asked.

”So, where are the Horn Moles?”

 ”They’re around here.”

The farmer pointed at the field.

The guild girl, Tiefi, said the Horn Moles make tunnels under the soft soil.

If we know where they are, we can stab them with swords or spears.

But finding them is the hard part.

”If I could find them, I’d kill them myself. But if I just poke around, they’ll run away.”

Horned moles are weak – even rookie adventurers can hunt them.

 So the reward is small.

But low-rank adventurers can’t find moles underground.

And high-rank adventurers won’t bother with such cheap rewards.

Result? Nobody wants this unpopular job.

 But we’ve got a plan.

”I appreciate you killing them, but don’t wreck my field, okay?”

The farmer sighed heavily and went back to work.

 He’s really struggling.

And doesn’t expect much from us.

 ”Oh well. Let’s begin.”

 ”Okay!”

 We step into the field.

 Carefully avoiding the crops.

 ”Alright Lifia, your turn.”

 ”Understood.”

Lifia stands in the field’s center, clasping her hands like praying.

 Then she chants:

 ”Dear Moo-Moo my spirit friend,

Find their voice with your wind,

 Whispers hiding ‘neath the ground,

Tell my master where they’re found.”

 Is this a spell?

Each word rings clear, like gentle music.

 Even her chanting is cute.

 I’m mesmerized… but wait!

A breeze stirs, making the ribbon on my spear flutter.

I follow where it points, moving downwind.

Soon, the ribbon points straight down.

 The wind hasn’t stopped.

 It’s now blowing downward.

 Here.

I focus, adjust my spear, and take a quiet breath.

Then STAB – straight into the ground!

 ”SQUEE!”

A shriek comes from below as the earth trembles.

Feeling resistance, I lean on my spear to pin it down.

 Soon, the struggling stops.

 Then heat surges through me.

My chest burns warmly – but it feels good.

Like power filling me from within.

 Maybe…?

 I think “Menu.”

 ────────────

 Aisuku Taro (Human)

 Lv2

 MP: 9/20

 Possessed Skill: Love Hotel

 ――――――――――――

 ”Yes!”

I couldn’t help but punch the air in excitement.

I just leveled up after my first battle!

Then, Lifia rushed over with a worried look on her face.

 ”Master, how was it? …Eek!”

 ”Lifia, you are the best!”

I hugged Lifia tightly, feeling really happy with the results.

”I leveled up thanks to you, Lifia!”

”Hehe, I’m glad I could help!”

Seeing Lifia blush made me smile too.

I pulled the spear out of the ground with a “whoosh.”

There was a dead horned mole stuck on it.

It was much bigger than a regular mole and had sharp horns on its head.

This mole probably destroyed crops with those horns, causing a lot of damage.
