Volume 3 Chapter 6 Knight Girl
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
In the adventurer’s guild lobby, a girl with red hair and a ponytail suddenly rushed up to me.
Her eyes were filled with intense emotion, and her words to me were abrupt.
But of course, I couldn’t possibly have any idea what this was about.
I’m pretty sure this is our first meeting.
”Sorry, I think this is our first time meeting,”
I say, puzzled, as I respond.
She’s a beauty that could rival Lifia or Tifi.
If I really did know her, there’s no way I could forget.
But instead of answering, she sharply declares,
”No time for questions!”
In an instant, the girl draws her sword from her waist.
”Huh!?”
The adventurers around us are shocked, and a commotion spreads.
It’s not normal to pull out a sword in such a public place, especially in the adventurer’s guild.
”Enemy of my father!”
The girl’s shout echoes through the guild.
And without hesitation, she charges at me with her sword.
This has to be a joke, right!?
But her movements are clumsy.
Despite her neat appearance, her sword arm doesn’t seem all that strong.
I can deal with this with ease.
I dodge to the side, reading the path of the sword.
Then, I grab her arm and pin her down.
”Let go!”
The girl struggles, but I’m stronger and bigger.
Having contained her, I speak calmly.
”Calm down. Let’s talk.”
”Shut up! I have nothing to say to you!”
Suddenly, she headbutts me.
”Oof!”
Her forehead smashes into my face.
Sparks fly in my vision.
She’s stronger than I expected.
This girl, she might not be low-level, just bad with a sword.
”Master!”
”Mr. Taro!”
Lifia and Tifi rush to my side, worried.
The girl doesn’t listen.
She shows no sign of calming down or giving up.
Then, Gaedaf smoothly moves from behind.
”Let’s calm her down.”
He quietly circles behind the girl, wrapping his arm around her neck.
”Gulp…”
The girl’s strength fades, and her body goes still.
He’s choked her into unconsciousness.
Silence falls over the surroundings.
I’m impressed by Gaedaf’s skillful move.
As expected of a Gold Rank adventurer.
”Are you okay?”
”Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks, Gaedaf.”
Calming the worried pair, I thank Gaedaf.
Then, pointing at the unconscious girl with my gaze, I speak.
”What do you think we should do about this?”
”For now, let’s take her to the back.”
Feeling the adventurers’ eyes on our backs, we carry the unconscious girl to a meeting room in the back of the guild.
For the moment, we lay her on the sofa in the room.
”Taro, do you have any idea what this girl is talking about?”
Gaedaf asks me.
”No, not at all.”
To be honest, I have no recollection of it.
The girl was shouting something about “avenging her father,” but nothing comes to mind.
Certainly, since coming to this world, I’ve been involved in a few deaths.
However, there should be very few people who recognize it as my doing.
I speak as I organize my thoughts.
”Could she be related to Hasa, maybe?”
I ask, just to explore the possibility, but Gaedaf shakes his head immediately.
”No way.”
He asserts.
”I thoroughly investigated Hasa, and there was no information about him having a daughter. Besides, even if he did, you’d think she’d blame you for his death.”
”Yeah…”
I agree.
It’s hard to imagine the girl hating me over the Hasa case.
The Hitchcock incident shouldn’t be public knowledge.
If so, her attack might be for some completely different reason.
We can only wait and see what happens.
But will she honestly tell us?
That’s when Tifi speaks up.
”So, Mr. Taro. What will you do with this girl?”
”What do you mean?”
I reply reflexively to the vague question.
”If the victim, Mr. Taro, presses charges, this girl will be punished for attempted murder. Since it happened within the guild, there are many witnesses, and she can’t worm her way out. She might argue something at her trial, but since Mr. Taro is innocent, she’s sure to be found guilty.”
Tifi’s calm explanation makes me raise an eyebrow in surprise.
Certainly, it makes sense, and that’s how it would go according to this country’s laws.
But I didn’t expect to be in a position to decide her fate.
”It sounds like I have a choice here.”
”Yes, there is. Since it’s attempted, it won’t be a death sentence, but there’s a high chance she could be enslaved as punishment. It’ll be up to Mr. Taro whether he wants to press charges.”
Slavery is just a given in this country.
Some people end up as slaves because of debt, like Lifia, and others as punishment for crimes.
And it’s up to me to make that judgment.
I have the power to decide this girl’s fate.
The red-haired girl’s neat face suddenly catches my eye.
Her gaze towards me was intense, but looking at her now, she has a cute, innocent face.
If I press charges, this girl will be sold as a slave to some pervert as punishment.
And the money from the sale will end up in my pocket as compensation.
…No, I’d rather have the girl herself than the money.
That’s just common sense.
”The crime must be paid for!”
Lifia puffs up with anger.
She seems to think what I did is unforgivable.
Cute.
As I’m pondering this, Gaedaf cuts in.
”It’s up to Taro what you do, but I wouldn’t recommend letting her off scot-free.”
I listen to his words.
He has a strangely serious tone.
”I’m not planning on just letting her go, but why?”
Gaedaf answers me, folding his arms.
”Adventurers are mostly ruffians. If we let crimes slide, things will get messy.”
His gaze was sharp, as if he could see into the future.
