Volume 4 Chapter 11-2 The Hero’s Choice, and Its Outcome
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”…isn’t this crazy?”
”Don’t worry, we’ll be fine!”
The other boy says this bravely, but there’s a slight tremor in his voice.
Somewhere in his head, he knows how messed up this situation is.
”More importantly, watch out for the old man trying to sneak away with the Saq!”
As he says this, their eyes turn towards me.
It looks like they’re still focused on me.
Then it happened.
’Hiiieee!’
The Hitchcocks screeched all at once and swooped down like a storm from the sky.
The sheer number and speed froze the heroes for a moment.
Their gazes shot up, glued to the falling white shadows.
I wouldn’t miss this chance.
”Lifia, distract them!”
”Got it! Mooluum, Cyclone (Procera)!”
As Lifia cast her magic, winds whirled around us, and dust clouds quickly rose.
The heroes’ voices trembled in surprise as their vision was blocked.
”What!?”
”Are they trying to escape?”
Angry voices full of panic and frustration echoed, but to us, it was just background noise.
”Kéa, the door!”
”Understood!”
Kéa summoned the door to the Love Hotel, and we rushed inside without hesitation.
”Don’t let them get away!”
One of the heroes shouted, but it quickly became irrelevant.
The flock of Hitchcocks covered the sky like a blizzard, white shadows pouring down to the ground.
Their movement was more like a storm’s fury than a predator’s hunt.
The moment we entered and closed the door, the noisy chaos outside vanished as if it were a lie, and silence spread around us.
Inside the Love Hotel, the space was just as comfortable as always.
We took a breath.
”This should be over now.”
Even if they are heroes, they’re still quite inexperienced.
They won’t come out unscathed from an attack by the Hitchcocks.
There will probably be casualties.
I feel a little bad, but it can’t be helped.
This is their choice, and this is the result.
For me, what matters is my safety, my family’s safety, and my livelihood.
If they get in the way of that, I won’t hold back.
I manipulate the Love Hotel menu to display the outside situation.
I wonder just how long the heroes can hold out.
At the very least, I’ll see how it all ends.
’GYUUUUUUUHHH!’
The first victim was a Pole Python.
Countless Hitchcocks swarmed the snake, stripping the flesh in an instant.
The big snake fought back.
But it couldn’t win against numbers.
The heroes’ faces turned pale at the sight.
’No way… This can’t be real…’
The usually strong hero’s voice trembled.
But the Hitchcocks’ hunger wasn’t satisfied with just the Pole Python.
Driven mad by the scent of blood, the birds sought their next target.
Yes, every creature on the ground was their prey.
’This is bad, this is really bad!’
’Damn it, let’s run!’
’We can’t let ourselves get killed by these bastards!’
’Are you serious right now?’
The leader of the heroes shouted.
But it was already too late.
From above, countless Hitchcocks dove down at arrow-like speeds.
White shadows plunged one after another towards the ground, their sharp beaks and talons greedy for the heroes.
The heroes swung their swords, shot arrows, and cast magic to meet the attack.
But still, they couldn’t stop the endless assault of the Hitchcocks.
’There’s no end to this!’
’Defend! Use defensive magic!’
’Quick, cast Magic Shield!’
A young magician, in a panic, chanted a spell, and a semi-transparent magic barrier enveloped the heroes.
But could this really hold back the fury of the Hitchcocks?
The Hitchcocks crashed into the barrier one after another, bouncing off and falling to the ground.
But their momentum didn’t wane at all.
Ignoring the deaths of their comrades, they kept on attacking.
’Are we going to be okay…?’
Someone’s voice trembled.
Fear was seeping out.
Then…
Pshhh.
A sharp sound echoed.
A crack appeared in the barrier.
’Hey! Is it really going to hold!?’
’This is bad, this is so bad!’
Frantic shouts rose up.
The heroes’ eyes focused on the barrier.
Pshhh, Pshhh.
Cracks spread one after another.
The young magician’s face turned pale.
’I can’t… I can’t hold it!’
Despair colored the expressions of the heroes.
’We have to run through it all at once. Everyone, break the barrier on my signal.’
The boy in charge gave the order.
’Is that really enough?’
’It’s the only thing we can do!’
’No…’
’Do you have any other ideas?’
’One person should stay here and lure the birds.’
A brief silence.
’Stay? Who’s staying?’
’It’s obvious. We’ll leave behind the useless one.’
At those words, all the heroes turned their gaze to one girl.
’Huh…? No way, right?’
The girl’s face quickly turned pale under the weight of many eyes.
A trembling voice barely escaped her lips.
’It has to be you!’
’Alright, get ready.’
’I understand!’
The heroes hurriedly sprang into action.
No hesitation showed on their faces.
’5, 4, 3, 2, 1…’
’This is a lie! Tell me it’s a lie!’
Ignoring the frantic, pleading voice of the girl, the countdown continued.
’Zero!’
’No, no, no!’
The barrier vanished.
’Zero!!’
’At least be useful to us this last time!’
The moment the barrier disappeared, one hero shoved the girl away.
’Noooooooo!’
The girl tumbled through the air, rolling onto the plain.
There, a swarm of Hitchcock closed in.
Like a raging flood breaking through a dam.
The other heroes ran off without sparing a glance.
Hitchcock surged toward them as well.
And the scene filled with countless white birds, enveloping everything in a flurry of feathers.
