Volume 4 Chapter 19-3 The Assertive Girl and the Shy Girl

 The Next Day.

”I should be able to borrow a dictionary by noon. Just wait a bit.”

With that, Tifi headed off to her job at the Adventurers’ Guild.

We, meanwhile, set our sights on the surface.

The Love Hotel’s warp function could get us there instantly, but we deliberately chose the regular route, starting from the 3rd Floor of the dungeon.

The reason was simple: auditors might be monitoring the dungeon exit.

We couldn’t risk revealing the Love Hotel’s warp function.

From the 3rd Floor, we climbed through the 2nd Floor and 1st Floor. It was a tedious journey, especially when the Love Hotel could do it in an instant.

Regular adventurers go through this long trek every time—what a hassle.

It took us about two days to reach the surface, which was still much faster than most adventurers.

The dungeon entrance resembled a stone temple. We passed through its gates and stepped outside.

The entrance was bustling with adventurers—some heading in, others returning from their expeditions. We pushed through the crowd.

Yomi wore a plain robe, deliberately messing up her hair and hiding her face.

It was to maintain her previous image. If her transformed beauty were noticed, it might raise unnecessary suspicions.

No one paid her any attention. She wasn’t recognized as a hero.

 ”This way.”

Following Yomi’s lead, we headed to where the auditor was stationed.

It was a government-like building near the dungeon entrance, also serving as a barracks for the guards.

Inside, we were greeted by a middle-aged man with a nervous air. His tired expression and irritable gaze spoke volumes.

 ”You’re… from the Hero’s party…”

He stared at Yomi, furrowing his brow as if searching his memory.

 ”Togaki Yomi.”

When Yomi introduced herself, the man sniffed dismissively, clearly not remembering her name.

”Why are you alone? I thought it was strange you hadn’t returned from the dungeon yet. What happened to the other heroes?”

His tone lacked concern, instead dripping with disdain for Yomi.

 ”Actually—”

Yomi recounted the fate of the hero party.

They’d ventured to the 3rd Floor, encountered a Pole Python deep inside, and were attacked by Hitchcock. Only she had survived.

She didn’t mention that the heroes had targeted me.

She spoke the truth but omitted certain details.

 ”Foolish…”

 The auditor muttered scornfully.

”Are you truly the only survivor?”

”We got separated while fleeing from the bird. Since they haven’t returned, I assume…”

Yomi’s vague words implied the others were likely dead.

”I see… there’s nothing to be done. You’ll have to return to the capital.”

 The auditor sighed, informing Yomi.

But she hesitated, her eyes darting around before steeling herself to speak.

 ”About that…”

 ”What is it?”

”I’d like to stay here a bit longer to grow stronger. With this person.”

 She glanced at me.

The auditor’s gaze finally landed on me.

 ”And who are you?”

The auditor turned his attention to me.

”Taro, a Bronze Rank adventurer. I found and rescued her in the dungeon.”

 ”Hmph, Bronze Rank…”

He looked down at me with obvious disdain.

Bronze Rank adventurers are so undervalued.

While not on par with Gold or Silver Rank, Bronze Rank signifies experienced veterans. At least, we’re not rookies.

 But his opinion doesn’t matter.

”So, you’re attracted to the hero’s power?”

 The auditor sneered.

”But she’s one of the most useless heroes out there.”

It was the reaction I expected. Yomi’s reputation was terrible.

He probably thought I was trying to exploit her status as a hero.

And, as expected, he didn’t recognize me as one of the heroes. He hadn’t kept track of the person expelled on summoning day.

But that worked in my favor.

I remained expressionless and calmly replied,

 ”It’s fine. She’s a wonderful woman.”

The auditor’s brow twitched, but he quickly scoffed.

”Hah, what a strange taste. Do as you please.”

He turned away, seemingly losing interest in us.

Perhaps he was relieved to be rid of the troublesome hero’s watchdog duty.

We left the office without being detained.

 ”What a jerk.”

I grumbled as we walked away from the office.

Recalling the auditor’s attitude, I felt annoyed.

He’d dismissed Yomi as “useless” and looked down on her. His attitude toward me was no better.

 ”Well, it can’t be helped.”

Yomi, walking beside me, spoke with a detached tone.

 ”I was useless and plain… it’s only natural I wasn’t valued.”

She gave a faint, self-deprecating smile.

 But I immediately contradicted her.

”Things will be different now. You’ll prove your worth.”

When I said that, Yomi looked at me in surprise.

 ”You’re beautiful now, too.”

At those words, her cheeks flushed slightly.

She averted her gaze and nodded quietly.

 ”…Yeah.”

Her voice was soft, but her expression held a hint of pride.

With this, Yomi was free from surveillance. Now, she could move freely with me.

A new adventure with Yomi was about to begin.
