Volume 4 Chapter 30 The Power of Hair and Woven Light
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The building that stood amidst the vast grounds boasted a stunning grandeur, almost castle-like in its elegance.
Its white walls gleamed, polished to perfection, reflecting the sunlight beautifully.
The roof was adorned with intricate decorations, while the pillars at the gate were engraved with a noble crest.
A pair of heavy iron doors loomed before us.
On either side, armored sentinels stood watch.
Their sharp gazes weighed heavily on the visitors, like they were sizing us up for worthiness.
Towering before us was the estate of Count Dokihens.
A noble residence.
And being a Count’s manor, it exuded an undeniable sense of intimidation.
Once we passed through the gate, a meticulously maintained garden spread out before us.
Seasonal flowers bloomed in splendid order, while a fountain quietly reflected the afternoon light.
At the center stood a stone statue of a knight, gazing up towards the sky.
Surely, it was someone significant to this house’s legacy.
”It’s like a castle, isn’t it?”
Tifi exclaimed softly, her awe palpable.
Honestly, I felt a wave of nerves myself.
Is this sort of grandeur typical for the Count’s family?
Following our guide, we stepped into the opulent entrance hall.
A long red carpet stretched beneath us, and the marble floor gleamed like a polished jewel.
Above us hung a lavish chandelier, casting an elegant glow around the room.
The master of this estate, Count Dokihens.
The individual who successfully bid for the hair growth potion at the recent auction.
He had mentioned something about partial payment in kind.
That’s why we were here today──to collect it.
We were greeted by an elderly butler.
”Welcome. Unfortunately, the master is out at the moment. However, everything you anticipated has been prepared. Please, this way.”
This was the Count we were dealing with.
It made sense that he’d be busy.
Guided by the butler, we were led into the reception room.
Even a novice like me could see that every piece of furniture here was a fine work of craftsmanship.
The paintings hanging on the walls were nothing short of breathtaking.
In the center of this prestigious room, several items lay spread across the table.
These were the very items we had come to retrieve.
”Here are the items we’ll be handing over as part of the payment for the auction.”
On the table rested 2 heavy bags and 3 thick spellbooks, crafted with a sense of serious weight and history.
”Each ‘magic bag’ is worth 10 million Aurum. You may have both. And from these 3 spellbooks, you may choose one.”
We’re inspecting the items as the butler explains.
One ‘magic bag’ is a cute pouch with delicate golden embroidery.
The other is a plain-looking knapsack.
But even calling it plain, it’s a Count family possession──the materials are top-notch.
”The spellbooks are priced at 10 million, 15 million, and 32 million Aurum respectively.”
Quite a price difference.
The more expensive, the rarer and more powerful, I guess.
”Understood. Then, we’ll take both ‘magic bags’.”
”As you wish. Please select one spellbook.”
”Whoa, incredible…”
”Wait.”
Yomi reaches out to the spellbook, brimming with excitement.
I grab her wrist, stopping her.
Then, I turn to the butler.
”Can we take a look inside?”
”Of course, feel free.”
The butler smiles kindly and grants us permission when I ask.
”Um, excuse me then…”
”Handle them with care, okay?”
”I know, I know.”
Blushing slightly, Yomi reaches for one of the books again.
First, the one valued at 10 million Aurum.
The light green cover gives off a calm impression.
”The title is…’Smile of Blue Sky’?”
Yomi tilts her head as she reads the ancient script on the cover.
It’s definitely an odd title.
Yomi mutters as she flips through the pages.
”So it’s a wind spellbook, huh? I guess it’s heavy on the support spells.”
Next, Yomi reaches for the 15 million Aurum spellbook.
The cover is beige.
It looks rather plain compared to the others.
But despite its appearance, the price is significant.
”‘Book of Weaving Radiance’…”
Yomi furrows her brow slightly at the title.
”Magic of Weaving? What kind of spells are these?”
She reads on, frowning slightly.
Finally, the 32 million Aurum spellbook.
The black cover with a glowing red magic circle is strikingly ominous in design.
”This is the ‘Infernal Chronicles’… it feels ominous.”
Yomi grimaces slightly as she looks at the cover.
It seems to be a book about fire-related magic.
But with a title like that, it definitely has a dangerous vibe.
”With something like this, even that monster could… wait, is firepower all I need…?”
Yomi stares at the 3 spellbooks in front of her.
She’s struggling with which one to choose.
Should I say something?
But I can’t even read spellbooks.
For now, I just hope Yomi can gather her thoughts so I can give her some advice.
As I’m watching her, the butler approaches me.
”Thank you very much for donating the hair growth potion to this auction.”
I’m taken aback by his unexpected gratitude.
Honestly, I never thought I’d be thanked for a hair growth potion.
Hair is a personal issue for the Count, after all.
I was even worried he might be annoyed about the unnecessary expense caused by the Count’s whims.
”No, thank you. I’m just glad it was auctioned off.”
”Yes, it was immensely helpful. Thanks to you, my master has regained his hair. A truly splendid recovery.”
The butler speaks as if it were his own matter, his joy unmistakable.
”With his hair back, he’s even more lively than before. He’s been as energetic as when he was younger, throwing himself into both work and play.”
Who knew a single hair could change someone so much?
No, maybe hundreds of thousands of hairs?
It seems humans change in the most unexpected ways.
”And now, the once-hostile relationship with Baron Zubo has improved. They were political rivals in the past, but now they enjoy hunting together. This might even have a positive influence on the nation’s politics.”
I can’t believe my hair growth cream ended up having such an impact.
Something that could influence national politics…
That’s a bit terrifying.
”I-I’m glad it could be of help.”
