Volume 4 Chapter 42-2 The Hero’s Forbidden Technique

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”…Yeah. You’re right.”

”I’m so ready for this! Let’s do it!”

Tifi gives a deep, serious nod.

 Kéa’s practically bouncing with energy.

 ”Yomi?”

”…Huh!? Uh, what? Did you say something?”

Yomi jolts back to reality, startled when Lifia calls her name.

”Yomi, is there something you need to tell Master?”

Yomi keeps glancing, uneasy, at the black-haired guy on the screen.

 Black hair, black eyes.

Not totally unheard of, but in this world, it stands out.

 And supposedly, he’s a top-tier necromancer.

Given all those traits… Yomi’s reaction is obvious.

 What could it mean?

 ”Wait──seriously?”

”Yeah… I think he might be a classmate.”

 Yomi’s classmate.

A high school kid, summoned here alongside her as a hero.

Are they saying he’s one of them?

 ”His ability was necromancy?”

”Sorry, I don’t remember that clearly. I kinda recall someone with that sort of power, but… he looks different now, and we were never close or anything…”

Whenever a hero gets summoned here, they all get some unique ability.

Wouldn’t be weird if one of them ended up with necromancer powers.

But still──why would a summoned hero start attacking the kingdom?

”He didn’t have any love for the kingdom, did he?”

We got dragged here, basically kidnapped.

 Nobody gave us a choice.

They dumped this whole ‘save the world’ job on us and ordered us to fight.

No wonder someone might hate them.

But using a dragon corpse to attack?

 That’s… a lot.

 Hang on.

What did Tifi say about necromancers earlier?

”Tifi, how are necromancers treated in this kingdom?”

”The second they’re found, they’re arrested. And almost always──it’s the death penalty.”

 ”No way…”

 Tifi answers right away.

 Yomi gasps.

Guess that’s just how things work in this world.

 Doesn’t even feel that weird.

Controlling the dead creeps me out too.

 That dragon corpse?

 Gave me chills.

The kingdom probably didn’t know what to do with him, either.

They brought in this ‘hero’──but then he turns out to be a necromancer doing forbidden stuff.

It’s easy to imagine why they’d flip out.

”How’d they treat him back at the castle, anyway?”

”Sorry, I don’t know either. We usually acted in groups, so I didn’t really keep track of what the others were doing.”

Yomi checked but had no idea.

 She really was isolated, huh.

I was judged as incompetent because of the ‘Love Hotel’ skill and exiled.

 But what about him?

He had necromancy, a powerful ability, yet he was still a hated figure.

 Useful, but dangerous.

 Evil.

The question was: should they eliminate him or use him?

Either way, it’s clear he wasn’t treated fairly.

The kingdom didn’t give him proper treatment, which bred resentment.

The Demon Race probably exploited that.

 He had no freedom.

 He might’ve been locked up.

 At least under heavy surveillance.

Maybe he escaped on his own and was picked up by the Demon Race.

Or maybe they saw potential in him and took him in.

I can sympathize with him, I guess.

 But this situation?

There’s no letting him off the hook.

”Whatever the reason, if they’re attacking the village, we have to fight back.”

 ”Yeah, you’re right…”

 Yomi nodded, her voice low.

Her face was clouded, hesitation leaking through.

 Not surprising.

Even if she wasn’t close to them, they were classmates.

And they were victims of this messed-up world, just like her.

There’s no way she could want to kill them.

Maybe Yomi isn’t someone I can rely on for combat.

But how are we going to fight?

The enemy’s got a Dragon Zombie, a necromancer hero, and 5 from the Demon Race.

 They’re all tough.

The first target is the Dragon Zombie.

If we don’t take it down, the stampede won’t stop.

And that thing’s coming for the village.

To kill the Dragon Zombie, we need to take down the necromancer hero.

He used to be one of Yomi’s classmates, and he’s from my hometown, too.

He’s got the skills of a hero, and emotionally, he’s a real pain to deal with.

Plus, I can’t let the Demon Race escape.

I can’t let them take back information about me.

If we let them go now, they’ll definitely come back later to attack.

They’re probably on high alert after the attack earlier.

I can’t think the same tactic will work again.

 ”Yomi.”

 ”──!”

 Yomi jolted, her body trembling.

 Her nervousness was clear.

 ”Target the Dragon Zombie.”

 ”…Is that okay?”

 Her voice is hesitant.

”I told you, don’t push yourself.”

Honestly, the fastest move would be to have Yomi take out the necromancer with her magic right off the bat.

Her beam spells can punch through almost anything.

 She could definitely do it.

But that’d be asking too much of her.

And if I force her and she misses, we’re screwed.

Seriously… I go way too easy on these girls.

”Either way, we have to neutralize the dragon. Even if it’s just for a bit. Just do what you can.”

 ”…Okay. Thanks. I’ll try.”

 Yomi nods, looking nervous.

 But there’s relief there too.

 ”Heh.”

 Suddenly, Tifi’s voice──she’s smiling.

 Huh?

Sure enough, she’s beaming at me.

”Mr. Taro, you’re really kind, you know?”

”Yeah? Feels like I’m just being soft.”

 This world isn’t kind.

 It’s harsh as hell.

It nags at me, all the time.

What if I mess up one day, just because I can’t be cold enough?

”You might be. But that’s exactly why I like you, Mr. Taro.”

She looks right at me, not embarrassed at all, and says it straight out──Tifi.

 ”Is that so? Uh… thanks.”

I reply, feeling my cheeks get hot.

Honestly, their kindness is probably what keeps me going.

That’s why I want to answer that back.

I want to protect them──and everything they care about.

 So I’ll fight.
