Volume 4 Chapter 47 The Elf Man and Lifia’s Anger
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Lord Rozmiaque…”
The official scowls, but the elf man, Rozmiaque, seems unfazed.
Gathering attention, the elf man begins to speak.
”A very large-scale Spirit Magic was detected in this area. I came to investigate it.”
His tone is calm, yet it gives the impression of looking down on others.
Large-scale Spirit Magic.
Without a doubt, it’s Lifia’s magic.
Right after the stampede occurred, she activated a 9-character Spirit Magic to deal with the massive monsters.
Its power was terrifying, cutting away part of the forest and turning it into a crater.
Elves use Spirit Magic by calling the name of the Guardian Spirit that resides within them.
Weak elves can’t hear the spirits’ names well, and as they grow stronger, the number of characters they can hear increases.
”The scale of that Spirit Magic was extraordinary. The practitioner’s power might rival a High Elf.”
It’s said that only legendary High Elves can use 9-character Spirit Magic.
Regular elves can’t use it either.
Lifia, a half-elf, shouldn’t be able to use it at all.
In fact, when we first met, Lifia only knew the name of one spirit.
She gained her current power by learning the name of the spirit Mooluumventas through my skill.
Since I need to hide my skill, I also want to keep Lifia’s knowledge of the spirit’s name a secret.
”If there is a legendary being, a High Elf, in this land… someone who knows the true names of the spirits, we must find them.”
The elf man, Rozmiaque, continues speaking.
His expression seems somewhat entranced.
It seems that High Elves are very important to them.
”The kingdom’s request is merely an added bonus.”
The official can only grimace at those words.
The power dynamics are clear.
This elf doesn’t seem to be serving the kingdom.
And he’s in a position to take such an attitude towards the kingdom.
Whether the basis for this is his magic power or authority, I can’t tell.
The local guild branch chief, who was sitting next to me, started explaining.
”As far as we know, the only elf who entered the forest at that time was her.”
Saying that, he gestures towards Lifia standing behind me with his eyes.
”Hmph.”
Rozmiaque snorts in amusement.
”Such a mixed breed wouldn’t dare to claim the name of a spirit. There must be others.”
Did this guy just call Lifia a mixed breed?
Sure, she’s a half-elf, but there’s clear contempt in his words.
I don’t like how he’s talking, whether it’s about blood or abilities.
Saying that to my Lifia, of all people.
As I take a step forward, ready to anger, my robe is tugged.
Lifia is the one holding it back.
When our eyes meet, she shakes her head slightly.
I try to cool my boiling head.
No, I can’t fight here.
I need to calm down.
”Hmph.”
Did she notice my inner turmoil?
Rozmiaque laughs mockingly.
”So? What did you see? You saw the person using that magic in the forest, didn’t you?”
The calmness in Rozmiaque’s voice is gone.
His tone is low and piercing, like a interrogation.
His words are sharp, filled with a threatening aura.
I answer, feeling confused.
I can’t give away too much.
”I don’t know. No one saw any──”
”Liar.”
Rozmiaque cuts me off immediately.
He narrows his eyes and looks into mine with certainty.
”What are you hiding?”
My heart pounds.
Could this guy also read emotions?
Maybe it wasn’t just a trick of Lifia’s.
Can all spirit magic users do that?
”How preposterous for a mere mortal like you to try to hide the truth from me, a high elf. It’s laughable. It’s like a dog barking at a god.”
His eyes seem to appraise and belittle me.
He laughs through his nose and piles on the insults.
”After all, you’re just a lowly man walking with a mixed breed. You only look human, but the stench of your filthy blood is clear.”
That’s when Lifia’s voice cuts in.
”What!?”
The voice from behind is filled with shock and anger.
Lifia takes the insults against her in stride, but she can’t stand by when I’m insulted.
Her feelings… they’re coming through loud and clear.
It hurts.
But Rozmiaque, he couldn’t care less about our reactions.
He just said it real casual-like.
”You’re gonna answer me, whether you like it or not. Ssloual, Tree Prison.”
A 6-letter Spirit Magic!?
As Rozmiaque chanted the spell, the ground beneath us started to heave.
No, it’s not the ground that’s heaving.
”Ack!”
The moment I shouted, the fallen leaves scattered on the ground were swept up, and the soil was slightly upheaved.
From the center, a tiny green sprout poked its head out.
1, 2, 3… in the blink of an eye, countless sprouts appeared around the tent.
And then they started to grow.
At a believable speed, the sprouts turned into leaves, the stems stretched, and the trunks thickened.
The bark cracked, knots floated, and before we knew it, they grew from saplings to full-grown trees, and then even bigger, like they’ve been alive for years.
Branches extended, leaves flourished.
The trees grew around the tent, their branches intertwining, overlapping tightly to cover the space.
A perfect wall blocking any escape route.
The sunlight that was shining in from outside was blocked by the green canopy, and the surroundings grew dim.
Like a massive tree cage.
We’re trapped right in the center of it.
”Rozmiaque! What do you think you’re doing!”
A voice filled with anger flew through the air.
The one who shouted was one of the heroes.
You could read the confusion on his face.
It seems like this action was unexpected for the heroes too.
But still, Rozmiaque couldn’t care less about his words.
”Let’s see if you’ll answer me. About the one who used such powerful magic.”
As if in response to his words, the surrounding trees rustled.
Almost like they’re urging an answer.
In this space, there’s no place left to run.
What do I do?
What’s the move here?
Rozmiaque’s strength, it must be considerable.
No doubt about it.
He casually used a 6-letter Spirit Magic.
Even Lifia now has trouble controlling a 6-letter spell.
