Volume 4 Chapter 69-2 The Cat-Eared Girl’s Feelings And Resolve
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Looks like the tension finally broke.
But at the same time, her shoulders started shaking.
Amber eyes got wet, lips trembled a little.
”Actually… I was scared. Jumping into the sea, I might’ve died… I was really, really scared…”
Her voice cracked, cat ears drooping sadly.
The tough heart she showed before was spilling out honestly now.
I quietly moved closer, gently hugged her small, wet body.
Her cold skin slowly warmed against my chest.
She stiffened for a second, surprised maybe, then relaxed and buried her face into my chest.
”You did good. It’s okay now.”
I whispered softly and patted her back gently.
I felt her trembling start to slow down.
”Yeah… sniff… thank you…”
I held the tearful cat-eared girl tight.
For a while, just like that, she calmed down.
”Thank you. It’s okay now.”
I started talking about what comes next.
”Since I helped you, I’ll take you back to the village. I’m Taro. What’s your name?”
”Korukona.”
”I see, Korukona. Nice name.”
When I said that, she blushed.
”Thanks, Taro… And thank you so much again for saving me.”
Her words were honest. Not just tough, but good-hearted.
Well, sending Korukona back to her village was fine.
The problem was…
”What should I do with those guys?”
I looked at the deck of the pirate ship next to us.
The pirates were tangled up in Rozmiaque’s vines, rolling around all pathetic.
Their fighting spirit was totally broken.
I couldn’t just leave them like that.
But taking them all with me? Not realistic.
While I was thinking, Lifia came to stand beside me.
”Master. During the fight, someone shouted something strange.”
Strange?
”They said ‘This is different,’ or ‘We were tricked.’”
”Tricked…?”
She frowned.
They were rogue pirates, betrayal wasn’t surprising.
But something felt off.
”We should hear what they have to say.”
Tifi said calmly from behind.
”Yeah. Lifia, who was that?”
”That man in striped clothes over there.”
”Rozmiaque.”
”Huh.”
I called Rozmiaque, and he nodded.
He said a chant, and the vines holding the man moved and grew new branches that became legs.
The vine legs carried the bound man, walking like a person.
”Yeah…”
A plant moving like an animal.
Korukona was shocked.
Her cat ears down, eyes fixed on the vine legs with tension.
Rozmiaque was a top Spirit Magic user even before we met. She probably never saw magic like this.
Soon the man was brought in front of me.
Middle-aged, gaunt face. His eyes were sharp but tired.
Maybe the vines’ pressure was working because he looked like he was giving up.
”Hey. Who tricked you? What were you told?”
He shrugged and shook his shoulders nervously.
”I-I don’t know! We just did what we were told!”
”Answer clearly. Who told you? What exactly?”
”The boss said the navy won’t come. We can steal freely without trouble, do whatever we want! That’s all!”
He sounded scared but honest.
Lifia and Rozmiaque didn’t interrupt.
So he probably wasn’t lying.
”It’s strange pirates know navy movements. That’s not easy.”
”True.”
I nodded at Tifi’s words.
Then I looked for their leader.
Among the tied pirates, one wore better clothes. Different face, less like a thug. That must be him.
”That guy too… huh!?”
Rozmiaque tried to bring him over, but suddenly his face changed.
He looked scared.
”Lord, that guy…”
”Ugh… ugh…”
The leader started trembling violently.
A groan escaped him, his body bent forward.
Eyes wide open, foam came from his mouth.
His skin color changed. Purple, almost black.
Not normal.
”Poison!”
Rozmiaque shouted and ran across the vine bridge.
He rushed to the man, pulled out a potion.
Forced open his jaw, pushed the bottle inside.
The potion poured down.
But the man showed no reaction.
Eyes wide open, no movement in his chest.
The pirate boss was already dead.
”…Lord, I have failed you.”
Rozmiaque came back, shoulders slumped.
”No, it’s fine. You did well.”
I said, putting my hand on his shoulder.
The potion was a Greater Healing Potion made with Ambrosia.
If it didn’t work, it was almost instant death.
Nothing to be done. No one was to blame.
Still, suicide before spilling info?
A regular pirate wouldn’t do that.
This is getting more suspicious by the second.
