Volume 2 Chapter 13 Suspension
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
(The old man’s face flashed in my mind—the one who’d tried to kill me. He said he was at death’s door, but that was a lie. He was a monster. My anger was just a mask for the terror I felt, a way to keep my knees from shaking. If I was going to take Nico as my wife, I had to be ready to die for it.
But if I ran into him now… if he didn’t listen… I knew I stood no chance. I had Mana¹, sure, but he had that precision. He’d have a knife in my throat before I could even finish a chant. I needed that rage. I needed to be a demon.)
I was barely a hundred yards past the main gate of the Magic School when the sound of hooves shattered my thoughts. A carriage was barreling toward me, flanked by riders. It looked like the town guard was in pursuit.
The two horses pulling the luxury coach were lathered in sweat, ignoring the shouts of the guards behind them. “Halt! I said halt!” a guard roared.
The driver, a man who looked like he’d been stitched together from spare parts and bad intentions, didn’t even tap the brakes. He looked like he’d stepped right out of a delinquent manga, and as the carriage slowed near me, he locked eyes with me and sneered.
The guard I recognized from my first day—the younger one—spurred his horse ahead, cutting off the coach right at the school gate. “Get out of the way, you petty little official!” Frankenstein roared from the driver’s seat.
The carriage door flew open, and a mountain of a man stepped out, followed by two punks. Past them, in the shadows of the coach, I saw a man pinned on top of someone in a maid outfit. My blood turned to ice.
”We have reasonable suspicion! Step aside for inspection!” the guard yelled. But the three thugs were already moving to shove the guard’s horse out of the way. I didn’t think. I just ran toward the door.
”You insolent brat! Do you know whose carriage this is?” I didn’t give a damn. I lunged for the door and yanked it open, but a hand clamped onto my robe and threw me back onto the stones.
”Nico!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. A faint, trembling voice came from inside the dark carriage. “Larry…?”
The last of my restraint snapped. The rage I’d been saving for the old man exploded. I lunged at the man who’d grabbed me and buried my fist in his face. The sound of his nose shattering was a wet crunch. I didn’t stop until my knuckles burned and he was nothing but a heap of bruised meat on the pavement.
I ripped the door open again. The guy inside, the one who’d been forcing himself on her, turned around with a look of pure annoyance. He was wearing gaudy, embroidered silks, his shirt hanging open. “Who do you think you’re—”
I didn’t let him finish. I grabbed a handful of his curly hair, slammed my forehead into his nose, and hurled him out of the carriage. Nico sat there, her clothes torn to her waist, shielding herself with her hands as tears streamed down her face.
”We’re going home,” I said, stripping off my robe and wrapping it around her.
”You’re a dead man! You want to die?” The giant who’d stepped out first was coming for me now. “What the hell do you think you’re doing to my woman, you piece of shit!”
I caught his hand mid-air and opened the floodgates, performing a Mana Drain² so deep it felt like I was pulling his soul out through his fingertips.
He hit the ground like a sack of stones. I stepped out of the carriage, leading Nico by the hand.
”Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” Frankenstein had his saber drawn now, standing over the noble brat who was clutching his bleeding face. Compared to the old man, this guy didn’t even register as a threat. “I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m breaking the trash that touched my woman. You got a problem with that?”
I stepped toward the driver, a Fireball³ roaring to life in my left hand.
”A mage?!”
”That’s right. Got a problem?”
”That’s… that’s cowardly!”
”Cowardly? You kidnapped a girl and you’re calling me cowardly? I’ll turn every one of you into a pile of ash.” I raised both hands, let the Fireball grow until the heat was singing the air.
”Wait! Stop!” Frankenstein’s courage vanished. He scrambled back and fled through the school gates. The two punks followed, but the noble brat stayed on the ground, his pride still getting the better of his survival instinct.
”He’s just one guy! Don’t run, you cowards!” I walked over to him. He tried to draw his sword, but his hands were shaking too hard. I grabbed him by his curly hair, slammed his face into the dirt, and ground my boot into his sword-hand. He shrieked as I worked over his ribs and groin.
”Stop it! Enough!” the others yelled from the gate.
”So, how are we going to settle this?” I pulled his head back by the hair. “You think… you’ll get away with this…” He was persistent. I’ll give him that. I shifted my weight and pressed his face harder into the cobblestones.
”Did you say something? I think you owe someone an apology.”
(I sounded like some villain from a manga. Me—the guy who used to be at the bottom of the food chain.)
”A noble… like me… apologizing…”
I slammed his face back into the stones. A crowd—a ga-Larry of spectators—had gathered around us. The guards were circling on horseback, but they weren’t moving to stop me.
”Repeat after me: ‘I’m sorry for kidnapping your woman. I’ll never do it again.’ Say it.”
”Never…”
”Fine. Then I’ll just incinerate your junk so you never have the urge to do it again.”
I hauled him up and brought the Fireball inches from his face. “You’re bluffing—”
I wasn’t. I lowered the flame toward his crotch. His silk tights started to smoke.
”STOP! I’ll say it!”
”Then say it.”
”I’m sorry for kidnapping your woman! I won’t do it again!”
”Not good enough. ‘I am a piece of shit who is sorry for kidnapping your woman, and I beg for your forgiveness.’”
He wailed the apology, his pride finally shattering in front of everyone. But I wasn’t done. “After you were finished ‘playing’ with her, what was the plan?”
He went quiet. “Fine. Your face is next.” I moved the flame toward his eyes. He broke.
He was going to sell her to a slave trader in Harritz territory. The guy had a branch in Besanburg too.
Two of the guards immediately broke off and galloped toward the city. He started spilling everything then—girls he’d snatched in November, girls he’d used and thrown into canyons, girls he’d buried alive. With every name, more guards rode off to verify the slaughter.
When he finally ran out of victims, I looked at the young guard. He looked like he wanted to kill the kid himself but didn’t know how to handle the legal mess. I grabbed the noble by his hair and dragged him toward the gate.
”Guards! This is school property! Civilians are prohibited! Use force to remove this man!” A professor was screaming from the courtyard. “Shut up and try it yourself, you hack,” I spat. I spotted the two “students” who’d been with the noble earlier. I lunged, grabbed them, and drained enough Mana to make them collapse.
”Do something, guards!” the professors shrieked. “Sorry, Professors,” the young guard said, his voice flat. “But that student there? He’s carrying the Viscount’s Sacred Sword⁴.”
”What does that have to do with—”
”A holder of the Sacred Sword is legally exempt from trespassing charges while pursuing a criminal matter.”
The professor’s face soured as if he’d just sucked on a lemon. “Larry-kun,” the guard said, turning to me. “These two are subjects of the Viscount. We’re taking them in on suspicion of murder. You cool with that?”
It turned out the noble brat I’d dismantled was from a different territory altogether. “Take them,” I said.
The guards dismounted and began binding the students. “You can’t do this! They are the sons of the Viscount’s vassals!”
”That’s exactly why we’re taking them,” the guard snapped. “We can’t touch the foreign brat—that’s for the high courts—but if our own people were murdered and our own citizens helped, we have full jurisdiction.”
I walked back to Nico, wrapped my arm around her shoulder, and led her toward the school.
(I might have overdone it. But honestly? The ethics in this world are trashed. Even the guards wouldn’t touch a killer just because he had a title. I’d just brutalized a noble in a fit of rage. Yeah… this might be bad.)
An hour later, I was summoned to the Principal’s office.
I was made to sit alone on a round stool.
Sitting on the reception set were Magic School Principal Annerose von Bülow, my uncle Thalbach Klaus, and a balding man, Normal School Principal Marco Lindemann.
First, my own Principal lectured me—over and over and over again—about how she had told me not to cause trouble with the normal school.
Then, she made me bow my head to the baldy.
”It seems he is not reflecting on his actions,” the bald man said pompously.
Of course I wasn’t.
My ethics from my old world made me refuse to put an apology into words.
Why the hell should I have to regret beating the crap out of a rapist and a murderer?
By the way, Nico said that as soon as she’d run away from her parents’ home to return to the Magic School, she’d been snatched into a carriage.
Since it happened near the guard post, I think that young guard spotted them and gave chase.
”Thalbach-dono, one of the boys handed over to the guards is the child of one of your colleagues. Is this really alright?”
My uncle didn’t respond to the Normal School Principal’s words.
He just sat there with his arms crossed and his eyes closed.
He was probably thinking desperately about how to save his own skin.
Regardless, I was reminded once again that in this world, life is cheap.
Not only can nobles get away with r**ape and murder, but the person who stops them is the one who gets bitched at.
”Excuse me.”
A clerk knocked and entered.
They walked up to the Principal and whispered in her ear.
Then, the two of them left the room together.
After a while, the Principal returned with a fat man in aristocratic clothes and another man in a fancy guard uniform.
”I am so sorry for the trouble. Please, forgive my foolish nephew.”
Uncle Klaus-san, who hadn’t moved an inch until now, suddenly stood up and bowed with an incredibly respectful posture.
”Hmm. Quite so.”
The obese noble replied as he sat himself down in the seat of honor without even being invited.
The baldy couldn’t move as fast as my uncle, so he ended up bowing while still in his seat.
The fat man stared at me for a long moment before opening his mouth.
”Larry Fee Getys. Do you remember me?”
I didn’t think I knew someone like this.
Oh—wait. He was the guy at the castle.
”Um… were you the person standing next to the Viscount when I received the Treasure Sword⁵, for you are?”
”Hmph. You have a good memory. I am Walter von Riedel, the House Steward⁶ for Viscount Bizan. As a House Steward, I’m entrusted with everything regarding the Viscount’s household, but that includes the annoying job of negotiating and laying the groundwork with other nobles. The boy you roughed up was Marc von Harritz. Since he’s the grandson of Marquis Harritz, I had to be the one to step in. Do you follow?”
This is bad.
A Marquis is a higher rank than our lord, Viscount Bizan.
The hierarchy goes: Duke, Marquis, Count, Viscount, Baron.
I even learned that in Japanese history back in my old world.
As I sat there, intimidated, he continued.
”Furthermore, the current Marquis’s daughter is His Majesty’s third consort, and her first child is the Crown Prince. To put it simply: the boy you beat up is the Marquis’s grandson and the Crown Prince’s cousin.”
So, the nephew-in-law of the next King?
I really did pick a fight with a dangerous one, didn’t I?
”It’s a real problem.”
The fat man squinted as he spoke.
(Is this where I get my Head-lopping⁷?)
Wait, wait, wait.
There’s a guy in a fancy guard uniform standing right behind me.
Is he there to haul me away for execution?
I looked at my uncle, but he still had his eyes closed, just like before.
”Let me ask you one more thing. Do you recall the name Colonel Eric? Eric von Harritz.”
A Colonel?
I know a perverted Elf Major who tried to shove her finger up my ass, but…
Wait, come to think of it, wasn’t there a Colonel commanding the battle at Vod Fortress?
The commander who stopped the plan to invade Kiridal immediately after taking the fortress.
Because of him, we lost half our cavalry and infantry at Garao Village, reinforcements never showed up, and I almost died.
In the end, the King himself led the troops, surged into Kiridal, and managed to seize the South Bohemia region and Count Straba’s lands.
Seriously, if the King’s reinforcements hadn’t arrived, we would’ve been wiped out, even with the help of that pervert Major and Lieutenant Louise.
”By any chance… were you the one in command at Vod Fortress?”
”Indeed,” the fat man replied.
He nodded with satisfaction.
”That Colonel’s second son is the Marc-kun you beat up today.”
Damn. He’s the son of a military bigwig.
”But the father is under rumor of being in league with Kiridal, and is currently with the General Staff.”
”Is that because he didn’t invade from Vod Fortress?”
”Exactly. You knew?”
”If the King hadn’t come personally, I would’ve died at Garao Village.”
”Hmm. The Colonel himself was granted the title of Baron of the Robe⁸. If all were normal, he’s an independent noble who could sue you, but since he’s under suspicion, it’s difficult. However, the Marquis’s house might still step in to save face.”
So, since the kid’s dad is under investigation, he can’t easily sue me—but the grandfather, the Marquis, might use his power to force the issue anyway.
”Normally, with pressure from a Marquis, your head would be on a platter without a second thought. Fortunately, you have an O-memie⁹. Since we can’t judge or dispose of you ourselves, a lawsuit would mean you’d be sent to the Royal Capital for a hearing before being executed.”
”So my head gets lopped off either way?”
”Hahaha! The execution part is a joke. Mostly. But it’s a massive pain regardless.”
”So, if the Kingdom’s government tells us to bring you in, we have to comply. You understand?”
Yeah, I figured.
”Therefore, you are under house arrest until the end of next month. You are forbidden from leaving this school. Principal, are you okay with that?”
”It can’t be helped,” Annerose replied. “I’ll keep a close eye on him.”
”Larry-kun, you agree?”
I had no choice but to say yes.
”Also, I’m sorry, but until your house arrest is lifted, we’ll be taking the Viscount’s Treasure Sword back. Erwin-kun.”
The man in the fancy uniform—Erwin—approached and took the Treasure Sword from me.
I guess they have to do it to make sure I don’t run away.
”Now then, Larry-kun. You may leave.”
The big shots didn’t look like they were going anywhere, which meant the “adult talk” was about to start.
I was curious, but I just bowed, opened the door, and walked out.
Outside, a huge crowd had gathered.
”Larry-kun, over here.”
Someone called from the office.
As I walked over, the crowd parted like the Red Sea.
How much did this gallery of people actually know?
They kept so much distance from me it felt like they didn’t even consider me human anymore.
Inside the office, a man and woman I didn’t recognize were waiting.
”These are Nico-san’s parents,” the clerk introduced.
She led us to a sofa in the back of the office.
”What about her grandfather?”
I asked just in case.
They said they left him behind because he’d probably cause a scene.
Good call.
Her parents didn’t seem to know much other than the fact that Nico had run away, so they were pretty shocked when I filled them in.
”So… will you be alright, Larry-sama?”
I told them I’d take responsibility for what I did.
Nico appeared, likely having been called, and she told her parents exactly how she felt.
They looked conflicted, but after a short talk, they didn’t try to force her home.
They bowed to me, said “Please take care of her,” and left in their carriage.
”I’m sorry,” Nico-san said in a small voice.
We watched the carriage carrying her parents exit the main gate.
”Is this okay? I might actually be executed, you know.”
”I guess. If that happens, I’ll just go back to my parents’ house.”
I looked at her, stunned.
She stared back with a totally straight face for a second before smirking.
”Surprised?” Nico-san asked with a laugh.
I think that’s a bit much for a joke, but hey, it’s Nico-san.
I want to believe the “head-chopping” thing was just a joke, but in this world where life is cheap, you never know.
Was it just in my head?
(That’s just how it is,) the owner of this young body seemed to say.

Summary:
Larry confronts his internal terror regarding Nico’s grandfather before witnessing a carriage kidnapping. He violently rescues Nico from noble students and forces a public confession of multiple murders. The guards intervene, using Larry’s possession of the Sacred Sword as legal cover while tension mounts regarding the political fallout
Larry is interrogated by school heads and noble representatives regarding his assault on a high-ranking noble’s grandson. The political weight of the victim’s family, including ties to the Crown Prince, places Larry in a precarious legal position despite the victim’s own crimes. Walter von Riedel imposes a strict house arrest and confiscates Larry’s Treasure Sword to prevent escape. Nico’s parents arrive and eventually accept her decision to stay with Larry after a brief confrontation
