Volume 2 Chapter 25 Material
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The ceiling of the administration building was needlessly high.
The small meeting room, shaped like a narrow eel’s nest, sat right between the office and the sewing room.
There, I suddenly ended up giving an impromptu lecture on artificial Shishi-odoshi (deer scare)¹.
The students were Second Lieutenant Sabrina Haas, a Dwarf lady from the Royal Army Ordnance Bureau’s Magic Weapon Department, and Corporal Thomas Bauer, a refreshing, muscular gorilla-type guy from the Bizan Military Academy’s Engineering Department.
”Um, well then…”
What I needed to talk about was already decided.
The artificial Shishi-odoshi (deer scare) I designed was created under the assumption that it was an application of a coilgun.
In other words, I had to talk about electromagnets, but I wondered if these people would even be able to understand it.
I had never seen electricity utilized in this society.
Even in my previous world, electricity only started being used at the end of the nineteenth century.
Since this world resembled the Middle Ages, it might take several hundred more years before electricity became a familiar part of daily life here.
What should I do?
Furthermore, because this involved Mana—which I had completely speculated on my own to be similar to electricity rather than actually being electricity—I didn’t even know how many similarities they truly shared.
In times like this, instead of pretending to know everything, I should reverse the approach and ask the students what knowledge they already possessed regarding the phenomena caused by monomeric Mana, which moved like electricity.
”Do you know how Magic Lamps were originally made?”
The one who answered this question was the muscular gorilla guy.
”It is passed down that while repairing a Golem, a magi-conductor wire² happened to touch magi-iron sand³ and it glowed,” Thomas said.”Seeing this, the Elf Mages discovered that connecting magi-iron sand placed inside a glass tube to Amber with a magi-conductor wire made it light up, and they taught this to the Human and Dwarf races.”
I see, so it was a Golem at the very beginning.
That Golem itself also originated from the Elf Mage race, and it was said to have developed from the fact that a Mage could synchronize with and control the corpse of a goblin.
Not limited to goblins, monsters have an organ like a lump of pine resin in the back of their heads meant for storing Mana, but if this rots, synchronization becomes impossible and it can no longer be moved.
In the early days, they utilized goblin corpses for dangerous work and the like, but the bottleneck was that the usable time was extremely short.
Then, after a long period of time, they discovered Amber possessing a navel that could serve as a substitute for the pine resin organ and could also store Mana.
Furthermore, they discovered that the silk of a Man-Eating Spider, or magi-conductor wire, could be used in place of the easily damaged nerves.
Through these two discoveries, the magic that initially only moved the corpses of goblins had now led to the development of Golems, which were main-force weapons in war.
It is educational to learn the history of tools.
”If there is anything you know about how that magi-conductor wire is used, please tell me.”
”Regarding the junctions, if you use pine resin, Mana will still pass through even if they are slightly separated,” Thomas said.”However, it can get hot and cause fires, so they say to properly secure them with metal.”
So that is why metal fittings are used to connect the magi-conductor wire to the Amber and the light-emitting components.
The muscular gorilla guy was also laying down the basics properly while speaking to me.
”We are told that if the magi-conductor wires that move the Golem’s muscles are brought too close to each other, the Golem’s movements will degrade, so they must always be kept at least a finger’s width apart,” Sabrina noted.
Does that mean the magi-conductor wires interfere with each other?
The Dwarf lady had just given me some great insight.
”Do you know the reason for that?”
”The reason is unknown,” Sabrina replied.”When you bring magi-conductor wires with opposing directions of Mana flow close together, the wires repel each other, so they must be interfering, but I hear countermeasures have been devised.”
Because she hedged her words at the end, it might be a matter she knows about but cannot speak of publicly.
”Aside from that, do you know of any other materials used in magic tools?”
”In that case, there’s magi-ward mail⁴,” Thomas said.”It’s silver chainmail woven with magi-conductor wire, and it can completely erase Fireballs or Mana strikes.”
I had an idea of what the muscular gorilla guy was talking about—the chainmail that Mark was wearing during our duel.
Even though I thought I could easily win against that guy, that chainmail extinguished the Fireball in an instant.
(Rather than absorbing the Mana, it felt more like it neutralized the power gathered by the Mana. )
Did it short-circuit the accumulated charge and let it escape?
Or was it something like static electricity and a ground wire?
”Does it have to be silver? Iron or copper?”
”I think copper is just because it’s weak as a defense, but I’ve heard it’s because silver repels mana much better than iron does,” Thomas explained.
According to the current conversation, silver seemed to be stronger against Mana than iron.
”There is coal,” Sabrina added.”Bituminous coal easily traps the heat of Mana, and the tar extracted by steaming it easily contains Mana, so it is used as a raw material for ink on official documents to prevent forgery.”
That was the coal that the Principal was selling as a circuit when we were coming to the territorial capital.
”What about other types of coal, like anthracite?”
”Well, coal that is of good quality as a fuel doesn’t trap heat, and the tar doesn’t take in Mana well either, so its compatibility with Mana is probably not good,” Sabrina answered.”I haven’t heard stories about it as a material.”
”That’s true, I haven’t heard of it either,” Thomas agreed.”After that, I guess there’s only magi-iron sand and Luminous Magic Iron⁵.”
None of it struck a chord.
Magi-iron sand was the glowing part of poor-man’s lamps, and Luminous Magic Iron was the expensive light-emitting part of Magic Lamps, which extracted only the glowing properties by removing impurities from magi-iron sand.
I judged that going any further along this line was impossible.
First, the story of coils and magnetic fields—here, I suppose I should call it the story of Mana and magi-magnetic fields.
I decided to replace electrons with monomeric Mana, and magnetic fields with magi-magnetic fields to conduct the talk.
I received some paper from the Dwarf lady, drew diagrams of a coil and a magnetic field, and began the lecture.
”So, what is that? Are you saying that if you wind magi-conductor wire around and around, you can create that kind of power alongside Mana Control? Did you know about this?”
That muscular gorilla guy, even though his rank was Corporal, started talking to Second Lieutenant Sabrina as if they were peers.
Since the Dwarf lady didn’t seem to mind it at all, I decided to leave it alone.
”I have used magi-conductor wire for many years, but I did not know this,” Sabrina admitted.”Does it absolutely have to be made into that loop shape?”
Good question.
I drew a single line and was about to explain the direction of the magnetic field and the right-hand screw rule when I realized something.
The direction of electrons and the direction of current are opposite.
Since I was speaking in terms of the flow of Mana, it would be opposite in this case.
How tedious!
Why on earth did the movement of electrons and the direction of current differ in my previous world?
Therefore, for Fleming’s left-hand rule, would the right hand be perfectly fine here?
I was getting confused.
I recalled that the middle finger was current, the index finger was the magnetic field, and the thumb was force.
While stressing over such things, I went on with the explanation, but naturally, it felt like the two of them were not fully convinced.
It couldn’t be helped; I had no choice but to have them look at the actual object.
I disassembled the prototype that the muscular gorilla guy had brought along.
He looked dissatisfied, but because he hadn’t shaped the magi-conductor wire into a coil, it wouldn’t become an artificial Shishi-odoshi (deer scare).
Borrowing a pen cylinder with a diameter of about two centimeters that Sabrina possessed, I created a coil.
While the magi-conductor wire wasn’t quite like wire, it could maintain its shape to some extent once bent, so I slipped the cylinder out, placed it on top of the table, and had Sabrina connect the coil with the Amber.
Gathering Mana into my right hand, I deployed it into the white smoke that forms before turning into a Fireball.
As I brought it closer to the entrance of the coil, it was sucked right in, exactly as expected.
”Awesome, it’s true!”
”So if a Fireball gets sucked in the same way, it becomes an artificial Shishi-odoshi (deer scare), doesn’t it?”
As expected, showing the actual thing made it easier for them to understand.
For the time being, I breathed a sigh of relief.
”I get it,” Thomas shouted.”I’m going right back to remake it.”
Whether he truly understood with just this alone remained unclear, but the muscular gorilla guy stuffed the items he brought—including the coil I just made—into a bag and walked out of the room.
”He is a passionate person, isn’t he?”
Sabrina watched him leave with a smile.
”What will you do?”
I tried asking her about what would happen next.
”Regarding what, I wonder?”
”No, I mean, I assume you already understand the principle of the artificial Shishi-odoshi (deer scare) that was requested by that Lieutenant Colonel.”
Since there was nothing left to talk about, I was asking what she intended to do until the Lieutenant Colonel came to pick her up.
”If I am being entirely honest, Larry-san… my real interest lies in the object called a ‘motor’ that you revealed during the interrogation.”
That motor was not something proper meant to make a car run.
Even if this body of mine was young, it was impossible to do it with women every single night.
Especially since acts with perverted people like Henrietta-san lasted for a long time, and maintaining stiffness during that whole interval was tough, I had thought that if there were so-called adult toys available, it might make things even a little bit easier.
Not just a simple ddo, but something that moved—I wanted a built-in vibrator.
The motor I had envisioned as the power source for it had been read during the interrogation.
Therefore, it really wasn’t the kind of thing to talk about with a female Second Lieutenant.
”Please do not worry about it,” Sabrina said, leaning in closer.”I am simply interested in what kind of thing that power source is, and my superior has mentioned that if you desire something like what was written in the report, it would be fine for us to create it and hand it over to you.”
Was it really okay to manufacture adult toys at the Royal Army’s ordnance factory?
Well, if she was willing to go that far.
”But, we are lacking all sorts of things.”
”By that, you mean… ?”
She leaned forward.
She was incredibly eager.
Thereupon, I informed her about the lack of permanent magnets, the lack of materials to serve as the core of the electromagnet, and that even if those were available, I felt anxious about whether this world had reached an industrial technical standard capable of producing them.
”The part about the technical standard weighs on my mind,” Sabrina remarked.”Even so, I am still a member of the Ordnance Bureau.”
”Part of it is that the item to be made is small, but the problem is ball bearings. The bearings.”
She had a face that indicated she didn’t understand what I was talking about.
Thereupon, I drew a picture to explain it.
”It is something meant to reduce friction between a shaft and a bearing.”
As I spoke about this, I recalled a conversation with my girlfriend from my previous life.
In my past life, we had used an adult toy, and I was told by my partner that instead of just buzzing and vibrating, having it squirm and stir around inside felt much better.
Even if I were to make one over here, having two modes for both vibration and stirring would be impossible.
I was thinking about running a shaft through a bent insert mold to make it rotate.
If it were a vibrator function, it would involve a certain amount of high-speed rotation, so I thought ball bearings were essential, but if it was just going to squirm, I began to think that bearings might not be necessary.
Yet.
”This is excellent,” Sabrina gasped.”Is it called a ball bearing? Couldn’t this be used for things like carriage axles?”
”Eh? Well, yes, it was used for those kinds of things too, but…”
The first time I saw them was on the axle of a roller skate.
Beyond that, they were used in familiar items like bicycles and automobiles.
The Dwarf lady had become incredibly enthusiastic, and she was already looking at adapting it for other uses.
”Taking breaks during a march also carries the purpose of preventing carriage axles from bearing too much heat,” Sabrina explained.”If this bearing can be used, the distance an army can advance in a single day will increase by leaps and bounds!”
”From my experience serving in the Militia, I wanted to say that cutting into rest time leads to a drop in morale.”
”Still, the construction looks simple enough, but if it isn’t made of a hard material, the frame will deform, and if the balls inside get crushed, it will actually create more friction. If you’re going to use it for a carriage, it needs to be something highly reliable.”
”Well, I suppose so, but if we raise the carbon content… Ah, excuse me. So, what is the size of this bearing?”
After that, the conversation continued about the bearing balls, grease, and the motor shaft, and discussion of the motor itself was pushed to the following day. It seemed the place where she was staying was not my room; they had spoken to the administrative staff, and she was put in an empty student dormitory room.
The next day, I attended school classes in the morning. Legal studies lectures made me yawn both in my previous life and in this one, but since it was a mandatory class to advance to the next grade, I managed to do my best somehow. As for basic magic studies, there were many interesting topics, but I had wanted to hear about materials due to my relationship with the Dwarf big sister, though there was none of that this time.
During lunch break, while I was eating a meal and having Marie give me supplementary tutoring in law, Pamela entered the Dining Hall. She said she came to pick up Henrietta-san’s meal.
”Can you tell Henrietta-san that a guest has come from the Royal Capital, so I probably can’t make it today or tomorrow either?”
”Understood. Then prepare yourself for three days from now. A starving Henrietta is more merciless than a Red-eyed Wolf.”
The Small Elf Mage left behind those ominous words and departed.
It was fun talking with Second Lieutenant Sabrina Haas of the Arsenal Bureau’s Magical Weapons Division. I could understand the technical level of this world, and since she mainly dealt with Golems, we also had a lively conversation about the personalities within the 101st Golem Battalion.
In particular, the battalion’s disbursement officer, who had many connections to the Second Lieutenant. That was Veronia-san, who dyed her Uniform pink.
She was meticulous and shrewd in her work, but her real life was wild. Specifically, she wanted to make everything pink, and she apparently poured her entire salary into that purpose.
For example, to dye a Uniform pink, you had to bleach it once, otherwise it wouldn’t work. The Second Lieutenant taught me this while laughing, saying that once Veronia-san started talking about dyeing, she wouldn’t stop endlessly.
While having that kind of conversation, the two of us conducted experiments today to see if various materials bought at the school store could become magnets. We placed materials inside a coil made of magical thread and checked if bringing the same material close would produce a magnet-like effect.
The Magical Iron⁶ and Luminous Magic Iron⁷, which we had viewed as promising, did not react. Various types of coal and metals were also no good, and just as we were about to give up.
We decided to try with a few stones picked up from the yard.
However, because the coil we had been using until then lacked a sufficient diameter, we made a coil using a medium-sized piece of Amber about the size of a milk bottle.
”No way, right?”
I activated Mana Control⁸ on the Amber wound with magical thread.
”Second Lieutenant-san.”
I called out to the Dwarf big sister who was organizing the experiment records. Since she faced toward me, I pointed directly at the Amber with all my might and poured Mana into it.
”Uh, you didn’t trick it, right?”
She shook her head sideways with all her might. In that state, when brought close to another piece of Amber, an attractive force operated.
”Amazing, a motor can be made with this, can’t it?”
I put a pause on that statement. Just this wouldn’t do; the motor I knew required permanent magnets.
However, she simply could not help being delighted, and from then on, forgetting the time, we conducted various tests regarding the number of windings, the inside of the coil where no contact was made, and so on, and it unmistakably caused the exact same phenomenon as a magnet.
”Shouldn’t we go for a meal soon? The Dining Hall will close in just a little bit.”
It was almost 8:00 PM; exiting directly into the Courtyard from the small meeting room, the two of us hurried to the Dining Hall, but it was already closed.
Going on like this without eating anything would be bad for the Dwarf big sister too. However, at the staff place in the back, they wouldn’t let me eat unless I brought Henrietta-san along.
Yet, I couldn’t let a guest go hungry. Thinking it was worth a try even if it failed, I went to the Dining Hall located on the first floor of the staff quarters.
The Dining Hall was thriving, and behind a partition in the back, some kind of loud voices were being made. It was late for a New Year’s party, but it had the atmosphere of some kind of banquet being held.
When I peeked in, inserting only my head from the entrance, the manager Daniela-san came out from the kitchen.
”あれ, Larry-kunじゃない”
Even though I had only come once, she remembered me. When I explained the circumstances, she made a slightly troubled face.
”Normally, you see, I’d overlook it for you, but today, you see.”
She pointed toward the banquet with her thumb.
”What are they doing over there?”
”The talk about sorting the new students; the big wigs are here, you see. It won’t end for a while.”
It seemed they were deciding who this year’s Rookies would study under. To be sure, while eating here, it would be bad if unnecessary things entered one’s ears.
”Then, it’s impossible, isn’t it?”
”But since you have a guest with you, I’ll go ask a quick question for you.”
Daniela-san was a good person. If she didn’t have children, I would ask her out. Hahaha.
Not long after she disappeared to the other side of the partition, the Principal appeared. While thinking that a troublesome person was present, I gave a bow, but somehow her gaze was not directed at me.
”Sabrina, if you were coming, come and greet me properly.”
It was masculine speech; the Principal was female, but when using this kind of phrasing, she was quite angry. Or rather, did she just call the Dwarf big sister by her first name without an honorific?
”I just thought Mama was busy.”
Mama?
But the Principal was Annerose von Bülow, and the big sister was Sabrina Haas. Their surnames were different, and the title von was not attached to the sister either.
”If you’ve been here since yesterday, you could have come as much as you wanted.”
”If you knew I was here, a greeting isn’t needed, right? Even though you abandoned Papa.”
Abandoned Papa.
I see, the parents divorced, and that’s why the surnames are different.
”Greetings and divorce have nothing to do with each other. You are at a good age too, so at least acquire some manners.”
Somehow, it felt like a place where I shouldn’t be. Exchanging glances with the manager Daniela-san, we shrugged our shoulders at each other and stepped away a little.
”Good grief, it can’t be helped. Daniela, feed those two over there something, and put the bill on my tab.”
After exchanging complaints for a while, they must be parent and child; the Principal left those words behind and attempted to return.
”I don’t need it; the Royal Army vouchers can be used here, right?”
Seeing the manager nod, the Principal left behind “Do as you please” and went back to the other side of the partition.
”I’m sorry, Mama is always like that.”
After toasting with lager, I was apologized to by the Dwarf big sister. Well, relationships with blood relatives might just be that kind of thing.
After the meal, a new material was found.
The stones picked up in the yard reacted to the Amber electro-magnet.
”One is limestone, and the other is… chert?”
The Dwarf big sister knew the word limestone, but she seemed not to know chert.
The two excited people made a motor blueprint while experimenting, but because there was still no material to become a permanent magnet, we substituted by making an electro-magnet with a separate system of Mana circuit, but it ended up becoming quite a large thing.
”But somehow, miniaturization might be possible, you know.”
My heart danced at Sabrina-san’s words.
She said that if a motor could be made with Mana, the scope of application would be wide, but as long as it used Mana charged in Amber, it could not be operated for a long time, so I didn’t think there was that much use for it.
Since the time was what it was, we called it a night around there for this evening.
Thinking that both Marie and Nico would be asleep, when I returned to the room, I quietly got into bed without turning on the lights so as not to make a sound.
”You haven’t been cheating, have you?”
”Looks like it.”
Sandwiched between the two of them, I was checked by scent.
”Can we trust that Dwarf girl?”
”I don’t know, but seeing that she hasn’t made a move even though it’s so late, maybe we can trust her.”
It seemed my upright conduct was suspected of cheating, but it looked like my innocence was proven.
”Larry likes big breasts.”
”Well, let’s make sure he can’t do it.”
Hugged from behind by Nico, my crotch was grasped.
”Wait a minute, don’t use my body as you please.”
Sorrowfully, this young man’s body entered a combat-ready state after being pinched and rubbed a few times by a woman’s cold fingers.
Don’t lose, me.
The next morning, or rather, before dawn.
While sleeping, exhausted from crying at the sad nature of a man, I heard a sound like fireworks launching in the distance.
Without knowing whether it was a dream or reality, I returned to the world of sleep.
Around the time I fell asleep, there was a violent banging sound on the door, and I raised my body.
As expected, Nico and Marie also woke up, but both of them were in an undone state.
Having no choice, I went to the door in just my underwear, unlocked it, and the Principal was standing there.
”What was that sound just now?!”
Even if I was asked such a thing, I would be at a loss.
”It was a loud bang, three times even! What did Larry do?”
”Even if you say that, I was sleeping.”
I conveyed it honestly, but a gaze filled with suspicion was directed at me.
In the end, I was grabbed by the collar.
”Is my daughter, is Sabrina not here?”
”I’ve heard she is staying in an empty room somewhere, but as for exactly where…”
At that time, a sound like fireworks was heard again.
It was quite distant.
Moreover, this time it was four consecutive blasts.
Whether she recognized it wasn’t me, the Principal departed without saying anything.
If she suspected me by mistake, she should apologize properly. It’s because of that kind of thing that you get divorced.
Of course, I didn’t say it out loud.
The Principal stopped, turned around, and was glaring at me with a terrifying expression.
Can she read my consciousness even though our skin isn’t touching?
