Volume 2 Chapter 30 Holiday

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”Today’s a day off, right?”

After seeing my sister-in-law off, Nico and Marie immediately hooked themselves around my arms.

Even this early in the morning, people were already moving through the academy grounds.

Judging by the amused looks we were getting, everyone probably assumed I was enjoying the attention.

In reality, I was being dragged along against my will.

As we entered the administration building, we ran into the Principal.

Almost instantly, Nico and Marie let go of me.

”Good morning,” the Principal said gently. “It’s nice to see everyone getting along.”

Since she was Marie’s professor and Nico’s superior officer, neither of them could act too casually around her.

 ”Good morning.”

The three of us greeted her properly.

 Then she turned toward me.

”Do you know when Second Lieutenant Sabrina Haas will arrive?”

Second Lieutenant Sabrina Haas belonged to the military’s Arsenal Bureau and had designed the artificial deer scare¹. She was also the Principal’s daughter, though apparently she’d taken her father’s surname after the divorce. From what I’d seen, their relationship wasn’t especially warm.

 ”No,” I replied. “I haven’t heard anything.”

 ”I see. Then that’s fine.”

Apparently I wasn’t important enough to receive advance notice.

That probably wasn’t going to change anytime soon.

As we passed one another, the Principal glanced toward Marie.

”Marie, don’t overexert yourself while carrying children. They say it affects the child.”

”That’s rich coming from someone who’s gotten rusty with age,” Marie shot back.

Once the Principal walked away, Nico laughed.

 ”That really sounded like you.”

Lately, Nico had become noticeably brighter.

”You’ve changed since Teressa came,” I said.

 ”Have I?”

She brushed it off, but the carefree expression on her face suited her.

Honestly, this version of Nico was a lot cuter.

”Anyway,” she said, “want to grab breakfast?”

That sounded far better than being dragged straight back to a room.

 Naturally, I agreed.

Over breakfast, the conversation shifted toward going into town.

Now that my confinement had finally been lifted, everyone wanted to enjoy the holiday.

Thinking back on it, despite spending all this time in the territorial capital, I still hadn’t properly explored the city.

First I’d been dragged to the guard station after running from Isabella.

Then Nico’s grandfather had nearly killed me.

After that, one disaster followed another.

Compared to being stuck indoors, going outside sounded refreshing.

I convinced a mildly reluctant Marie to come along, changed into my uniform, and headed toward the entrance.

The carriage stop already had a long line despite the early hour.

”If Larry’s with us, nobody stupid will try anything,” Marie declared confidently.

I wasn’t entirely sure where that confidence came from, but walking sounded faster anyway.

So we headed into town on foot.

For some reason, several students waiting in line followed after us.

Most of them were first-years from outside the viscount territory.

One person missing from the group was Manuela, the black-haired girl from Marie’s circle.

”Her family’s poor,” Marie explained. “So she probably couldn’t afford to come out today.”

Economic gaps existed in my previous world too.

Back then, some people lived in cramped apartments with no sunlight, no bath, and no air conditioning.

Others lived comfortably in fully furnished homes.

Compared to that, the disparity here honestly felt smaller.

The walk into town took about thirty minutes.

 Roughly two kilometers.

The winter wind bit through our uniforms, but the weather itself was pleasant.

Marie and Nico chatted with the students following behind us while I naturally ended up leading the group.

Somewhere between a guide and a windbreak.

We passed the General School and continued through the upscale district lined with large estates and gardens.

Beyond it stood the viscount’s administrative offices and the Kingdom’s joint government building.

Eventually the road sloped downward into the lower town.

 The atmosphere changed there.

 More crowded housing.

 Timber-framed buildings with exposed beams.

 Shops on the first floor.

 Living quarters and offices above.

”Nico,” Marie asked, “don’t you want to stop by your family home?”

 ”Since we’re already here, sure.”

Honestly, I expected her to refuse.

Maybe meeting Teressa had changed something.

The old guard was sitting beside the shack near the gate, warming himself by a bonfire.

”Yo, Larry,” he called. “Where are you lot headed?”

 Apparently he still remembered me.

 ”Just out for the day.”

”I see. Don’t do anything reckless.”

The man looked to be in his forties or fifties.

Being warned not to cause trouble by someone old enough to be my father felt strangely complicated.

Once we passed the guard shack and headed toward the Danube River, the students following us continued behind us.

I finally understood why when we reached the riverside.

The fabric store near Nico’s family home was packed with students.

 ”So this was your destination?”

I asked one of the girls trailing us.

 She nodded cheerfully.

Young people really did flock toward anything new.

Even if Lieutenant Colonel Helbert claimed the place was connected to Turk intelligence.

Maybe things like that happened constantly in my previous world too.

 I probably just never noticed.

 ”Young lady.”

Lubellman, the clerk from the paper shop, approached after spotting Nico.

”I came out because it’s a holiday,” Nico said. “Are Father and Mother here?”

”Unfortunately, the master and mistress have gone to the Royal Capital,” he replied. “But the previous generation will be delighted to see you. Please, everyone, come inside. It must be freezing out here.”

By “previous generation,” he definitely meant that old man.

I quietly tried to slip away.

 Nico immediately grabbed my sleeve.

The students following us were ushered inside too.

Soon we were seated in a warm guest room at the back of the shop with tea and sweets laid out in front of us.

Hot tea felt incredible after the cold outside.

If it had ended there, things would’ve been fine.

Then I heard heavy footsteps approaching from somewhere deeper in the building.

 The sliding door rattled open.

 ”Welcome.”

 Everyone except me bowed politely.

 I stood up immediately.

 ”It’s been a while.”

 I lowered my head.

The old man ignored me entirely.

”Nico, I heard you’re expecting. Teressa told me.”

 …What?

”Grandfather, it’s still early,” Nico replied. “Only two months.”

”Even so, it’s my great-grandchild. Everything will be fine.”

 So Teressa had visited.

And apparently informed the entire household about Nico’s pregnancy.

Meanwhile, I still hadn’t fully processed it myself.

 ”And who’s the father?”

The old man asked that while staring directly at me.

 What an awful old man.

 Nico glanced at me shyly.

”Hmph. That spineless brat who quit morning training after two days?”

”That was because I had to go to the Royal Capital…”

”No excuses. Fine, whatever. If it’s a boy, the shop’s future is secure.”

This world treated pregnancy very differently.

If someone could properly use Mana, conception was apparently far easier to control.

Still, confirming things after only two months felt a little early.

More importantly, was he seriously planning to make my child the heir to the shop?

 Nico didn’t deny it.

To make matters worse, Marie apparently already knew about the pregnancy too.

She laughed and asked how many children I’d end up having this year.

 My sister-in-law.

 Marie.

 Louise.

 Nico.

Every situation had happened because the other side wanted it.

That didn’t exactly erase my responsibility.

Honestly, I still had no idea how to process any of it.

After about an hour, we finally escaped Nico’s family home despite the old man repeatedly trying to make us stay longer.

As we stepped back outside, another question crossed my mind.

How did contraception even work for men in this world?

 There was no rubber.

And simply pulling out hardly sounded reliable.

While I stood there lost in thought, the women inside the fabric store enthusiastically examined bolts of cloth.

”Would you like me to show you around?”

A clerk from the store approached me.

She had dark hair and skin close to a Japanese complexion.

 Cute rather than strikingly beautiful.

She reminded me a little of Emma from Granny’s shop back in Strock Village.

”I’m just waiting,” I said. “My friends are shopping.”

”That’s alright. I’ll still guide you.”

She smiled sweetly before wrapping herself around my arm.

Her chest pressed directly against me.

Was this the honey trap Lieutenant Colonel Helbert warned me about?

Could this girl really be connected to Turk intelligence?

”Business seems good,” I said carefully.

”Very good,” she replied. “Other stores have even started supporting us.”

She leaned close enough to whisper directly into my ear.

 ”I see… haha…”

I had absolutely no idea how to respond.

 Thankfully, help arrived.

”What exactly are you doing to my man?”

 Marie stepped in immediately.

The clerk smoothly pulled away from me without missing a beat.

”Please come visit again,” she said with a smile. “Next time, take me somewhere nice.”

 ”What are you even saying?”

If she acted like this around lonely military students all day, she’d probably never struggle to find targets.

Especially at an academy filled mostly with men.

Meanwhile, Nico had become completely absorbed in discussing fabrics, dyeing techniques, and laundry methods with another clerk.

Marie and I ended up waiting near the Danube River quay with our backs against the railing.

”At this rate,” Marie said while rubbing her stomach, “your son is definitely going to grow into a womanizer like you.”

Her stomach hadn’t even started swelling yet.

 ”Don’t say things like that.”

”How many siblings is your child going to end up with?”

She used the pregnancy as an excuse to keep provoking me.

”So what about you?” I asked. “What are you planning to do after graduation?”

”Teressa invited me to Strock Village,” she replied. “I’m considering it.”

Honestly, Marie would probably become a major asset to House Getys.

Her personality overlapped with Monica’s in some ways, but with Teressa around, things would likely work out.

”That’s a lie,” Marie said suddenly. “Why are you taking me seriously? I’m going back to Barsheni Village.”

 ”Why?”

”Because that’s what I decided from the start. I’m going to raise the younger children there.”

Come to think of it, I’d never seriously asked about Marie’s future.

Apparently she wanted to return to the village, teach children how to read and calculate, and search for those capable of using Mana.

Naturally, she knew that alone wouldn’t support her financially.

She planned to earn money as a Mage³ alongside it.

”What about you?” she asked. “Going back to the village to become a farmer after graduation?”

 ”Maybe. I haven’t decided yet.”

I still didn’t want to tell them about the New Continent the Fourth Sage had mentioned.

 Nothing had been decided yet.

And honestly, I still didn’t understand where I stood in this world.

”You don’t seem like the type who’d stay in a village forever,” Marie murmured.

 ”You think so?”

Instead of answering, she leaned closer and rested her chin on my shoulder.

 ”I know so.”

Part of me suspected she was right.

Even so, letting go of the peaceful village life I’d dreamed about since my previous life wasn’t easy.

”What are you two getting cozy for?”

Nico came jogging back over carrying fabric bundles.

”We were talking about what I’m going to do after graduation,” I explained.

 ”And what about Larry?”

 ”Still undecided.”

”That figures,” Nico said. “Watching you, I just can’t imagine you quietly settling down in the village forever.”

Apparently both of them saw me the same way.

”My body’s freezing,” Nico complained. “Let’s go eat something warm.”

The city, built on the sandbar between the Danube and Inn rivers, had two major shopping streets.

East Street handled most commercial trade.

West Street was packed with restaurants, food stalls, and crowds of students.

”Those gray uniforms belong to the Agricultural School,” Nico explained. “They’re supposed to resemble silver spoons.”

Their cloaks hid most of the uniforms from the cold, but enough remained visible.

Honestly, they looked less like silver spoons and more like dull kitchen sinks.

Even their hairstyles and expressions screamed wealthy upbringing.

”And those are Military Academy students.”

 Black high collars.

 Dark capes.

 Perfect posture.

 They looked painfully serious.

Students from the General School wandered around too, though thankfully none resembled the idiots who attacked Nico before.

For some reason, most of them avoided eye contact with us entirely.

The most dangerous group, however, belonged to the Commercial School.

 Dark blue uniforms.

 Dark blue capes.

 Some looked respectable.

 Most looked like delinquents.

Even the girls carried a slightly dangerous air.

”You really shouldn’t make eye contact with that school,” Nico warned.

 She was probably right.

If I caused trouble here, I’d get dragged back to the Principal’s office.

And another confinement period sounded exhausting.

Carefully carrying Nico’s fabric purchases, I followed the two of them through West Street.

”That place is supposed to be good,” Nico said.

We entered a pasta shop she’d heard about.

The restaurant was warm, thick with steam from boiling noodles, and already packed despite the early hour.

After waiting for a table, we ordered soup pasta.

The dish consisted of cheap onion-and-bacon soup filled with pasta, topped with cheese and a boiled sausage.

”Just like they said,” Nico declared happily. “It’s delicious.”

For two Silver Coins between the three of us, it really was excellent.

Back outside, the cold made every steaming storefront look tempting.

We bought meat skewers and apple pie from street stalls while wandering farther down West Street.

”I want to buy underwear,” Marie announced suddenly.

”Then I’ll make some for you with this fabric,” Nico replied, pointing at the cotton cloth she’d purchased.

”No,” Marie said with a grin. “I want the kind of lingerie that’ll make Larry’s heart skip a beat.”

”Is there even a store like that?”

According to Marie, there was one hidden somewhere in an alley between East and West Street.

Apparently she’d heard about it from a friend.

I decided not to ask for details.

After weaving through several side alleys, we finally found the place.

”The two of us are going inside,” Marie said. “Wait here.”

At first I did exactly that.

 Then boredom won.

I wandered back to West Street, bought fried bread on a skewer from a food stall, and sat on a bench.

 The bread looked delicious.

 Unfortunately, it tasted awful.

 Greasy.

 Tough.

 Almost flavorless.

After forcing down half of it, I gave up.

Just as I started wondering what to do with the rest, two men in Commercial School uniforms sat down on either side of me.

At the same time, another student and two rough-looking men blocked the front.

 So this was a shakedown.

If they only wanted money, I could probably pay them off.

Even getting punched a few times would’ve been manageable.

Compared to Hans, these guys looked harmless.

”Hey,” one of them said. “That robe means Magic School, right?”

 ”Yeah.”

”Then you know what school these uniforms belong to?”

 ”Commercial School.”

 ”Exactly.”

The moment I answered, they all burst out laughing.

Apparently that part worked the same in every world.

”Looks like you’re eating something good,” another one said.

”You can have it if you want.”

I offered him the half-eaten fried bread.

He slapped it from my hand.

 ”Oops. My hand slipped.”

 The others laughed harder.

One of them deliberately crushed the fallen bread beneath his boot.

”So,” another asked, crouching in front of me, “you got money?”

”Depends how much. I’m already in debt.”

”Debt?” He grinned. “Cute face, tragic life.”

 The others laughed again.

”Tell you what. We’ll erase that debt for you.”

 ”Really?”

”We’re Commercial School students,” he bragged. “We know how business works.”

”So how much do you owe?”

”First, one Gold Coin and one Silver Coin to the Kingdom Office.”

 That immediately made them pause.

Apparently even Commercial School delinquents understood what Yen meant.

”Yeah… we can’t erase government debt.”

 ”Fair enough.”

 ”Anything else?”

”Two Gold Coins to Adolf Wolf’s establishment.”

 The mood shifted instantly.

”You’re screwing with us, aren’t you?”

 ”Nope. Here’s the membership tag.”

I opened my robe enough to show them.

The two sitting beside me immediately stood up and started whispering.

”What about the rest of your debt?”

”Well, Isabella from former Bohemia also—”

 ”Forget it. Never mind.”

 Apparently that was enough.

”Looks like there was a misunderstanding,” the leader muttered awkwardly.

The same group that had cornered me moments earlier now retreated with nervous smiles.

When I stood up, the nearby spectators scattered too.

Just as I started heading back toward the lingerie shop, someone called out behind me.

 I turned.

A dark-skinned girl with large eyes stood there beside a short boy wearing a Military Academy cape.

 ”Rudy?”

 ”It really is you, Larry.”

Rudy had fought beside me during the Battle of Vod Fortress.

We’d been captured together, imprisoned together, escaped together, and survived together.

Apparently he’d returned home afterward and immediately enrolled in the Military Academy.

”Uniforms really do change people,” I said.

He was still short, but the high-collared uniform and straight posture made him look far more mature.

”I heard about the duel trial,” Rudy said.

 News traveled frighteningly fast.

Then his gaze shifted behind me.

”Ah! That terrifying woman from Kiridal Village!”

Apparently Rudy still viewed Marie that way.

To be fair, so did I sometimes.

”What are you doing here, you useless man-child?” Marie shot back.

 Apparently the feeling was mutual.

”Shut up! Why are you even wearing a Magic School uniform?”

”I heard the Military Academy was respectable,” Marie replied coldly. “Clearly the rumors were wrong.”

They immediately started insulting each other.

”Larry,” Rudy said suddenly, “don’t tell me she’s the girl who caused the duel trial?”

 Apparently he’d heard details.

”No,” I replied. “That was the maid outfit girl. Marie works as my attendant now.”

 ”You’re dating both of them?”

 ”Something like that.”

Rudy stared at me with genuine pity.

”Larry, your luck with women is horrifying. You need an exorcism.”

Honestly, he might’ve had a point.

”Who is this guy?” Nico finally asked.

”I told you about him before,” I explained. “Rudy from Heberich Village. We ended up running around Kiridal together during the Battle of Vod Fortress.”

”Oh right,” Nico said. “The guy who got you hunted because he was standing in line for food.”

I really wished she’d remember literally anything else.

”What do you mean bad luck with women?” Nico snapped at Rudy. “Usually guys who say that are just terrible with women themselves.”

That might also have been true.

At that point Rudy’s irritation shifted entirely toward me.

”You were banned from leaving school for a month,” he said. “How did you still manage to build a social life?”

”You’re one to talk. You’ve got a girl with you too.”

The dark-skinned girl standing beside him was unusual for this region.

Honestly, I was more surprised Rudy had managed to meet someone at all.

”Well… yeah,” he admitted awkwardly. “We only met last week, so we’re not exactly dating yet.”

His sudden humility completely killed Marie and Nico’s momentum.

”Anyway,” I said, “introduce us properly.”

According to Rudy, the girl’s name was Harmonia.

 No.

Harmonia was the name of a country.

Most likely she’d said she was a refugee from Harmonia and Rudy misunderstood.

And considering she worked at the fabric store… wasn’t this exactly the kind of honey trap Lieutenant Colonel Helbert warned me about?

Still, introductions calmed the atmosphere considerably.

Then Rudy leaned closer and whispered in panic.

”Larry, I need advice. During our first date she kept pressing against me. I swear she was rubbing her chest on purpose. Do you think it’s okay if I make a move tonight? I heard there are hotels for that sort of thing in the Willow District. I already got permission to stay out overnight. Just in case, you know?”

The man somehow delivered the entire speech without breathing.

How exactly was I supposed to rescue a comrade already halfway trapped?

Looking more closely, the girl’s facial features and complexion reminded me more of someone from India in my previous world.

Which made the whole Harmonia refugee explanation even stranger.

That said, she was undeniably attractive.

And for sixteen, extremely well developed.

Rudy looked ready to throw his life away just to hold her hand.

The bigger problem was that she still hadn’t spoken a single word.

For a while now, she’d been staring directly at me instead of Rudy.

Marie and Nico had noticed too.

The moment all three of us realized it, the atmosphere turned tense again.

 What should I do?
