Volume 2 Chapter 34 Underworld
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The last day of March.
The exam results were posted.
Lists of successful students had been pinned to the bulletin board outside the administration building.
My name wasn’t on a single one.
I had failed every subject.
You really did it now, Principal.
A mix of anger and disbelief surged through me as I marched straight to the Principal’s office.
Locked.
I pounded on the door hard enough to shake the frame before a staff member finally stepped out and informed me that the Principal had left for an academic conference in the Royal Capital.
The only good news was that Marie had passed every subject.
At least she hadn’t been dragged down with me.
What the hell am I supposed to do now?
Just as I was about to head for Professor Henrietta’s laboratory, someone called out.
”Larry-kun.”
I turned around.
A sharply dressed man stood there wearing a silk tunic and cape.
It took me a moment to recognize him.
”Mr. Torge-Ullman?”
He was Ursula’s father—the merchant who had married her into the Getys family.
Tall, refined, and dressed in understated luxury, he looked more like an aristocrat than a trader.
”It’s been a while,” he said with a smooth smile.
Right. I remembered hearing during the wedding that he supplied Amber to the school.
”How’s school life?”
”It’s been alright.”
I wanted to curse the entire institution into the ground, but old corporate habits died hard.
So instead I gave him a polite smile.
Whether he noticed or not, Mr. Torge-Ullman simply nodded.
”I’m heading toward Obernbach soon,” he said. “I plan to stop by Strock Village along the way.”
”Business?”
”I finished my deliveries here and wanted to greet the Principal before leaving, but apparently he’s away.”
”The office staff said he left for an academic conference in the Royal Capital.”
”At this time of year?”
His expression sharpened slightly.
”Is something wrong?”
”No, it’s just unusual. Most magical academic conferences are held at the end of the year.”
Come to think of it, Professor Henrietta had also gone to the Royal Capital for one during winter.
”Spring conferences are usually for law and economics,” he added after a pause, almost reassuring himself.
Then I remembered something I’d wanted to ask.
”Do you handle defective Amber? Or Amber without a navel?”
”We do,” he replied immediately. “We remove the navels from small defective pieces and repurpose them for overcharge prevention devices. Larger defective pieces are often used in construction Golems. Since true super-large Amber is difficult to acquire, merchants sometimes combine standard large pieces with resin to imitate one. That’s when navelless Amber becomes useful.”
”Would it be possible for me to buy some?”
”Interested in research?”
I nodded.
The letter I’d sent to Second Lieutenant Sabrina before the exams had been about a new Amber charging method.
I’d confirmed the basics using cheap small Amber, but testing with larger pieces was another matter entirely.
”In that case, you can take some now,” he offered.
”Really?”
”Of course. We always keep extras loaded in the carriage.”
I motioned to Marie that I’d be leaving briefly and followed him toward the entrance.
Students crowded the carriage stop with luggage piled beside them, chatting excitedly about returning home.
Then a black military carriage rolled into a separate rotary.
Even at a glance, it was obvious the vehicle had traveled hard.
Mud splashed nearly to the roof.
The carriage stopped.
A woman in an aggressively pink uniform stepped down first.
The nearby students stared.
Honestly, I understood why.
Behind her, another officer descended from the carriage.
Lieutenant Louise.
Her hair had grown noticeably longer.
The moment she spotted me, she strode straight over.
Her face crumpled immediately.
”Louise.”
Before I could say anything else, she slammed into me and wrapped me in a tight embrace.
The medals and buttons on her uniform dug painfully into my chest, but the frustration from earlier disappeared instantly.
I hugged her back.
”People are staring,” the pink-clad officer said dryly.
Reluctantly, we separated.
Though not completely.
Louise still held onto my hand.
Warmth and relief flowed through her touch.
”You grew your hair out,” I said.
Before, she’d kept it cropped so short it was almost a buzz cut.
Now her bangs brushed her eyebrows.
At this rate, she’d eventually start resembling Cleopatra.
’It suits you.’
I sent the thought through Telepathy instead of saying it aloud.
”Since the children are coming, I have to leave active duty for a while anyway,” she replied through Telepathy. “I figured I might as well grow it out. Does it look strange?”
”No. It suits you.”
”Ugh. Disgusting,” the pink officer muttered. “This is exactly why I hate public displays of affection.”
Only then did I get a proper look at her.
She wasn’t wearing a suit.
It was a military clerk’s uniform.
Dyed entirely pink.
Even the Second Lieutenant insignia on her sleeve had been recolored.
Was that actually allowed?
”Second Lieutenant Veronia,” Mr. Torge-Ullman greeted with a smile. “It’s been a while.”
”Likewise,” she replied casually.
Apparently they knew each other.
’Who’s the pink one?’
I asked Louise through Telepathy.
”Second Lieutenant Veronia Roche. She’s the quartermaster for the Golems Battalion. She handles funding and equipment procurement. She used to be a Golems User herself.”
’And the pink uniform?’
Louise hesitated.
’Officially… it’s tolerated.’
That somehow raised even more questions.
”Louise,” Veronia said, “how long are you planning to keep holding his hand? And aren’t you going to introduce me properly?”
Despite technically outranking Louise in seniority, she spoke with complete informality.
Louise reluctantly let go.
”Larry Fee Getys,” she said. “This is Second Lieutenant Veronia Roche.”
Apparently Veronia had been the one who procured the water-drop sweets after the duel.
She’d also been stationed nearby when I boarded the battalion ship.
Honestly, with how eccentric she looked, it was hard to believe I hadn’t noticed her back then.
”I may look like this,” Veronia said proudly, tugging at her pink sleeve, “but I actually studied magical engineering at the Military University.”
”We reviewed your letter during the battalion executive meeting,” Louise added. “That’s why we came here overnight.”
That explanation was oddly satisfying.
Then another carriage arrived.
This one looked even worse.
Mud coated nearly the entire body.
”Clear skies last night?” Mr. Torge-Ullman asked.
”Very clear,” Veronia replied. “Good enough to run through the night. Though we may have pushed the speed too far.”
She wasn’t exaggerating.
The mud splashes reached all the way to the roof.
Mr. Torge-Ullman handed me a heavy bag.
”The defective Amber with navels is in here,” he explained. “The navelless pieces are separated.”
”How much do I owe you?”
”Nothing.”
”I can’t just accept this for free.”
”Think of it as an investment,” he said smoothly. “We Amber merchants have high hopes for a future Fifth Sage candidate.”
I honestly had no idea how to respond.
”Just take it,” Veronia said. “The military already squeezes enough money out of merchants anyway.”
”How cruel,” Mr. Torge-Ullman replied with a laugh.
Even in another world, military contracts were apparently lucrative.
As he departed, he gave us a stylish wink that felt absurdly out of place.
Then Second Lieutenant Sabrina stepped out from the newly arrived carriage.
The moment she spotted Louise and Veronia, she snapped into a salute and hurried over carrying a large basket.
She stopped directly in front of me.
”Why is Second Lieutenant Veronia here?”
”I came to visit Louise’s husband,” Veronia answered casually.
Sabrina clearly didn’t believe that for even a second.
”More importantly,” Veronia continued, “why are you in such a rush?”
”Ah… well…”
Sabrina’s eyes darted nervously toward the students watching nearby.
”Not here,” she murmured. “I’ll explain through Telepathy later.”
”Are you in a hurry?” I asked.
”Very.”
She immediately grabbed my hand.
Through Telepathy, her voice became urgent.
Rhein has been arrested.
What?
Apparently Rhein had been attacked by a Red-Eyed Wolf while conducting unauthorized mineral exploration in Al-Miraj Forest within Bohemia.
A local hunter rescued her and brought her to Opcheri.
Unfortunately, the authorities then arrested her for illegal exploration.
Worst case, she could face execution.
Mother sent word by express rider.
I thought Rhein had quit exploration work and focused entirely on alchemy.
I don’t understand why she went back to it either, Sabrina admitted. She’s always done strange things. But she’s intelligent. And she’s kind.
I wasn’t entirely convinced about the second part.
Maybe twins understood each other differently.
”You’re heading to Opcheri now?” I asked.
Mother isn’t here. So yes.
”You’re using a military carriage for this?”
Officially it’s undergoing durability testing.
Now that she mentioned it, the wheels really were unusual.
The axles used bearings.
The wheels themselves were reinforced with iron.
The cushioning wood around them had worn badly, but the core structure remained intact.
The design looked suspiciously close to industrial-era engineering.
”The tests went well?”
”Extremely well,” Sabrina replied.
Then she handed me the basket she’d been carrying.
Inside were three narrow boxes along with a stack of blueprints.
”These are the finalized design documents and the prototypes.”
”Prototypes?”
”They violate public morals, so I couldn’t manufacture them openly at the Arsenal Bureau. Only five prototypes exist.”
Right.
The Mana-powered vibrator.
There was probably no chance the military would mass-produce those publicly.
”One remains at the Arsenal Bureau,” Sabrina explained. “One is with me as co-inventor. The remaining three are yours.”
”Even you kept one?”
”Please stop imagining strange things,” she said flatly. “I’m retaining it for research purposes. More importantly, the Motor³ inside is classified technology. If one is lost or distributed, report it to me immediately.”
”Understood.”
Satisfied, Sabrina finally released my hand.
”Then I’ll be leaving.”
She saluted sharply and returned to the carriage.
”That’s a lovely sound,” Veronia commented while listening to the reinforced wheels.
Afterward, I escorted Louise and Veronia to the staff dining hall before returning to my room.
Marie was already preparing to leave for home.
”You’ve been talking with that old man this whole time?”
”No. Louise and the others arrived. Then Sabrina showed up too.”
”So the whole ‘keep Rhein away from you’ problem is finally solved?”
If Sabrina was telling the truth, Rhein would never return to the school.
Meaning I shouldn’t have any reason to visit the alchemy laboratory anymore.
Apparently Marie interpreted the situation differently.
”I think it’ll work out somehow,” I said.
”Then are you spending tonight with Louise? I might delay heading home until the day after tomorrow.”
There were definitely things I needed to discuss with Louise before she left.
Still, when I moved closer to kiss Marie, she pushed me away.
”I’m not some convenient woman.”
”I didn’t mean it like that.”
Even so, guilt pricked at me.
”What’s with the luggage?”
”Apparently it’s highly classified. Sabrina claims the inquisitors would come after me if it disappeared.”
”And you’re keeping that in your room?”
Transporting it everywhere would’ve been a pain.
I told Marie to make sure Nico ate dinner even if I returned late, then headed for Professor Henrietta’s room.
As expected, she was incapacitated by a hangover.
Pamela answered the door instead.
”Look who’s here,” she said dryly. “The remedial student with the lowest grades in school history.”
”Quiet. That was the Principal’s fault.”
”Oh, I’m fully aware,” Pamela replied. “You really never stop being entertaining.”
Her sharp tongue remained as vicious as ever.
”Professor Henrietta told me to give you this.”
She handed me the laboratory key.
I had already returned it once after intending to leave for good.
Now, with Rhein’s situation changing everything, I accepted it gratefully.
When I entered the laboratory, I discovered Romy had dumped everything from my shelf across the workbench.
I made a mental note to bully her later.
After setting down the bags from Sabrina and Mr. Torge-Ullman, I went to collect Louise and Veronia.
They needed to witness the new Mana replenishment method.
I explained the permanent magic magnet I’d created from a p**sy willow branch along with the Magic Current and Pressure Gauge⁴ connected to the series-linked Amber⁵.
”This Amber is the conventional type,” I explained. “Notice the streaks. The newer one has none.”
I demonstrated the pressure readings.
Both measured identically.
”In other words, Mana is still being stored despite the absence of streaks.”
Louise stayed expressionless.
Veronia’s eyes widened immediately.
Next, I swapped the streaked Amber with an empty one.
The empty Amber quickly filled with visible streaks.
”Now I’ll measure the pressure again.”
”The clear Amber shows double capacity?” Veronia asked. “Why?”
”Using a small Amber, I confirmed that a poor man’s light lasted twice as long compared to a standard charge.”
That finally made Louise react.
”How do you know the streakless Amber is truly full?”
”Right now I’ve only pushed it to double capacity while monitoring pressure levels.”
Then I continued.
”I’ve also been considering a method that avoids series linking entirely.”
Both women leaned forward.
”These streaks are probably Mana in dimer⁶ or trimer⁷ states. The usable form is monomer Mana. That’s why monomer Mana doesn’t create streaks.”
I glanced toward Veronia to make sure she was following.
”Go on,” she said.
”If we filter out dimerized Mana during charging, only monomer Mana passes through. Magic thread⁸ naturally blocks the larger forms.”
”So the thread itself acts as a filter?”
Louise closed her eyes thoughtfully.
Then a familiar voice boomed from outside.
”Good, you’re all here.”
The laboratory door opened.
Lieutenant Colonel Helbert squeezed past the shelves blocking the entrance and peered into the room.
The others immediately saluted.
I followed suit.
”Discussing classified matters in a building this flimsy is dangerous,” he remarked.
”Relax,” Veronia replied casually. “Nobody would suspect anything important happening in a dump like this.”
”Even after two battalion officers traveled overnight to visit?”
Veronia winced.
”Report,” Helbert ordered.
I summarized the new charging method and explained that it potentially doubled Amber operating time.
”Lieutenant Louise,” Helbert said, “your assessment?”
”The Golems Battalion already dominates the battlefield,” she answered calmly. “Doubling operational time would strengthen us further. But if enemy nations learn this method, the consequences become dangerous.”
Helbert nodded approvingly.
Then he spotted the basket from Sabrina.
A grin spread across his face.
”So those are the prototypes from the Arsenal Bureau? Excellent. Bring them with you. We’re changing locations.”
He ordered us into his carriage.
The vehicle crossed the Danube River bridge and climbed toward the hillside beneath the viscount’s castle.
”You thought we were going to Adolf’s establishment, didn’t you?” Helbert asked.
”I considered the possibility.”
”I’m offended. If I brought them there without inviting Major Sonya, she’d strangle me.”
I honestly couldn’t tell whether he was joking.
”Lieutenant Colonel,” I said carefully, “will today’s meeting require funding?”
”Ah yes,” he replied smoothly. “I heard you paid your tab at Adolf’s establishment quite responsibly.”
He completely dodged the question.
”If men in black suits come collecting debts, it’s best to pay quickly before rumors spread,” I muttered.
Helbert laughed.
”Exactly. So perhaps wealthy Larry-kun should pay for tonight’s hotel expenses.”
”Not funny. I checked my account recently. After deductions for the design applications, I only have two hundred thousand Yen left.”
”Interesting timing. Ah, today’s the last day of the month, isn’t it? Deposits should appear after accounting updates. Tomorrow’s a holiday, so by the day after tomorrow, tonight’s expenses may look insignificant.”
The old fox was impossible to pin down.
”So if my account suddenly fills up, I pay?”
”Exactly. If not, I’ll classify the expenses officially.”
”That’s not a negotiation.”
”Of course it is. In exchange, you’ll gain favor with military leadership and spend money on the woman carrying your child.”
I sighed.
”If Louise needs support, I’ll provide it even if I go into debt.”
Helbert studied me carefully.
Then his expression shifted.
”Have you considered bringing Louise to Strock Village to give birth?”
The suggestion caught me completely off guard.
”She planned to return home,” I said slowly. “But her father passed away, and the rest of the family resented her.”
”Because she possessed Mana talent,” Helbert replied. “She reached First Lieutenant while her older brother retired as a mere Second Lieutenant.”
I stared at him.
I hadn’t known any of that.
”Then she’ll come to Strock Village,” I said immediately. “Or maybe the Magic School nursery would be safer after registration—”
”Impossible,” Helbert interrupted.
”Why?”
”Because you can no longer remain at Bizan Magic School.”
For several seconds, I genuinely couldn’t process the words.
”What do you mean?”
”Your invention is too valuable,” Helbert replied. “Security here is a joke. Did you know the Amazoness working at the fabric store purchased the house next to the school? That her people have been watching you constantly? That another clerk has been manipulating Rudy for information? That Nico herself has been targeted?”
A cold chill ran down my spine.
The woman near Rudy.
The business card handed to Nico.
It all connected instantly.
”Second Lieutenant Sabrina has also been far too careless around you,” Helbert continued. “Foreign intelligence already considers you a Fifth Sage candidate.”
My stomach tightened.
”If you’d left Sabrina’s basket unattended in the laboratory, it would’ve vanished by tomorrow morning.”
”But nobody touched the Magic Current and Pressure Gauge.”
”Because Sabrina hadn’t contacted you recently.”
Suddenly Romy’s habit of casually dumping luggage onto workbenches felt far more terrifying.
”What’s going to happen to me?”
”You, Professor Henrietta, and Marie will transfer to the Magic Academy.”
”And Nico?”
”She’ll likely inherit the family business.”
That matched what I’d suspected.
”Is she safe living beside that fabric store?”
”Nico isn’t a Mage. She doesn’t understand your research.”
”Then they’ll use her as leverage against me.”
”No,” Helbert corrected calmly. “They’ll kidnap you directly if they get the chance.”
I stared at him.
”You’re joking.”
”Maybe.”
The fact that I couldn’t tell made it worse.
”So what happens now?”
”Tomorrow you’re coming with us to the Royal Capital.”
”Tomorrow? Why?”
”To present your prototype to His Majesty the King.”
I nearly stopped breathing.
”Apparently word about the prototype reached the palace,” Helbert continued. “His Majesty has taken a personal interest.”
There was absolutely no way to refuse that.
That evening, I finally managed to spend a quiet night alone with Louise.
Meanwhile, Helbert and Veronia disappeared together toward Adolf’s establishment.
The next morning, Isabella arrived to escort Marie home.
I’d already explained the transfer situation beforehand, so things proceeded smoothly.
Marie didn’t seem particularly bothered by moving to the Magic Academy, especially since Darina from our village already studied there.
Then there was Nico.
When I asked her directly, she admitted she’d decided to inherit the family business.
Apparently my court trial had weighed heavily on her.
She’d already discussed things with her sister-in-law and planned to return home after spring break.
Professor Henrietta, meanwhile, was ecstatic.
”A transfer to the Magic Academy,” she repeated breathlessly. “The same institution as Professor Pauman… this must be fate.”
She questioned Lieutenant Colonel Helbert repeatedly, seemingly trusting every word from a man who looked suspicious enough to sell counterfeit medicine in an alley.
I, on the other hand, remained far less convinced.
I thought I’d finally reached a peaceful student life.
Apparently not.
