Volume 2 Chapter 53 Wailing
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I parted ways with Veronia-san at the Academy entrance, retrieved the airplane, and stepped into the building.
Voices drifted from the hallway near the Dining Hall, but I ignored them for now, heading straight for the Laboratory on the fourth floor. I sprinted up the stairs, guided only by the dim, flickering lamps installed on the landings and each floor.
Unlike usual, the stairs were treacherous; papers were scattered everywhere, and without the lights, it felt like I was walking on ice. When I reached the fourth floor, I found that both our Laboratory and Professor Pauman-sensei’s had had their doors smashed in. Intense, harsh light from Luminous Magic Iron lamps spilled out from both rooms.
”They really did it.”
I dropped the airplane on the floor, leveled my Coilgun, and sprinted into the room.
Empty.
I did a quick sweep around the workbench in the center, but there was no one, and nothing moved. However, amidst the ashes of burned papers on the workbench, a small copper plate sat exposed. I suspect Henrietta-san burned the paper records along with the magic capacitor so that the research wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands.
”Hey. Here.”
Kenze pointed to the floor. There was a trail of blood—a significant amount. Small droplets overlapped, trailing off. A nosebleed?
”Wait.”
She wiped the bloodstain with her finger; the bottom of the center was still liquid, not yet congealed.
”It hasn’t been that long, then.”
I touched the ashes on the workbench; they were still warm. Henrietta-san had been here—maybe Pamela too—but that one wouldn’t go down without a fight. It’s logical to assume that whoever tried to loot the research got frustrated by the burning, beat Henrietta-san, and dragged her away. I have to go save them.
However, as I turned to leave the room, Kenze didn’t follow.
What is she doing?
Her wrap-dress was held together by cords laced like shoelaces to keep the sides closed. I looked back to see her twisting her body, loosening them.
”Time for milk.”
She answered with a face as if this were the most natural thing in the world, even in this situation. She shifted the fabric near the loosened cords, pulled out a well-shaped breast, and lowered it into the pot, which she had already uncovered.
”Unh.”
The out-of-place sound grated on my nerves.
”I’m going to check the next Lab.”
I left the room, and the moment I stepped into the hall, a series of dull thuds echoed from somewhere outside.
The castle? Is Major Sonya on a rampage?
Outside, the last remnants of twilight were gone, and beyond the window, there was only darkness. If I flew the airplane, I might be able to see the situation with a goblin’s vision, but now isn’t the time.
I entered Professor Pauman-sensei’s Laboratory, illuminated by the Luminous Magic Iron lamp. It reeked, as usual.
Several workbenches. On one of them, a large, reptilian creature had its belly slit open—as if it had been undergoing dissection. Not exactly a pleasant sight.
More importantly, documents were scattered everywhere.
I moved deeper into the room, standing beside the door to the half-open professor’s office. No sound came from inside. I leveled the Coilgun and kicked the door wide open.
Ugh.
The sight that greeted me was a man with his head split open on the reception table. To be precise, his skull had been cracked by something like a sword, and he was dead.
Judging by his clothes, it was likely Professor Pauman-sensei, though it was hard to tell from his face.
The room had been ransacked brutally. Every book that had been displayed on the back wall was gone. The desk drawers were all thrown open, stripped of anything deemed important.
I didn’t know what kind of exchange had happened with the looters, but I certainly didn’t want to die like that. I left the office.
Immediately, a wine barrel caught my eye. It wasn’t the kind laid on its side with a hole in the lid; it was standing upright, with a pipe inserted near the bottom and a plug in the mouth of it.
A filtration water purifier?
I pulled the plug, caught the water in my hand, and sniffed it—no odor. I tasted it—no flavor.
It was safe to drink.
”What are you doing?”
Kenze, having seen me drinking, brought her pot over and started refilling it with water, just as I expected.
”Don’t just stand there—put the airplane away.”
I had left it by the stairs. Honestly, this isn’t exactly the dynamic of a master and slave.
Still, Kenze was right. I did as I was told, covered the airplane with a cloth, and left it on a shelf in the Lab. Kenze put her precious pot into the cupboard under the workbench and followed me, unencumbered.
As we were heading down the stairs, she stopped me.
I could hear voices coming from the back of the third floor. Professor Hoffman-sensei’s floor.
Holding our breath, we crept toward the door of the laboratory.
”Come on, you’re not a total innocent, are you? Hurry it up.”
”If you don’t do it quickly, I’ll gouge out your friend’s eyeballs.”
The conversation was sickening. There were at least two enemies, likely using the girls as hostages to force them into doing something foul.
Without me noticing, Kenze had already crawled into a prone position, peering inside.
”Three men.”
Just as I thought. I handed the Treasure Sword to Kenze.
”A flimsy weapon.”
She complained, but she took it. Why does she always have to add that one extra word?
”Take care of the inside. I’ll handle any enemies coming from the stairs.”
”Are you sure about that?”
Kenze didn’t wait for me to finish, slipping into the room. It only took a few seconds.
”Done.”
I entered at her voice, finding one of the girls already being gagged by Kenze, probably to keep her from screaming.
”It’s okay. I’m Larry Fee Getys from the fourth floor.”
I soothed the panicked girl. The other one was a beauty—perhaps a research student here, older than the first. She was topless, her face and chest splattered with semen.
I assume the men, who were stripped from the waist down, had let it out just before heading to the afterlife.
”Eek!”
Ashamed of being seen by a man like me, she nearly cried out, but Kenze smacked her.
”Stay quiet, idiot.”
I doubt Kenze’s foul mouth will ever be cured. Then again, she was working sales at a fabric shop, so she’s capable when she wants to be.
We led the two out of the room and headed down to the second floor. Naturally, we wiped them off and got them dressed first.
The second floor was for Golem research. The professor there is said to be a woman, but if she has ties to the old Golems Battalion, I’ll inevitably have to cross paths with her eventually, so I didn’t bother stopping for pleasantries.
Kenze took the lead, wielding a dagger she’d taken from one of the three men we’d killed. I took the rear, guarding the two women we’d saved.
There were several human-sized Golems on the second floor, likely for practice. If I could use just one, the fighting would be much easier. Unfortunately, the Amber had been stripped from all of them.
We headed for the first floor, but a man who looked like a mercenary sprinted past without even glancing at us.
”You two, go back to the room on the second floor.”
There was a Golem-vs-Golem battle in the courtyard that lasted about twenty minutes. The loud sounds from the direction of the castle had ceased. I didn’t know the situation.
But the leader of the men who attacked this place might know.
The arcade leading to the Medical Magic research wing had been destroyed by Major Sonya using Granny Ferris-san’s Golems. Since the only exit should be the front entrance, a carriage should have arrived to transport the books and Amber, but there wasn’t a sign of movement from that direction.
”What do you think?”
”We have no choice but to go and see.”
I pointed in the direction the mercenary had gone.
”Hmm. I’ll return this.”
I took the Treasure Sword back from Kenze and proceeded toward the Dining Hall, keeping to the shadows.
”We’re withdrawing.”
I heard the voice of the former Principal, Annerose-san.
”Why? There hasn’t been any contact. Are you really going to abandon all this treasure?”
The voice of a man, relatively calm.
”Because there’s no contact. If we drag our feet, we’ll lose our chance to escape. The planned carriage and the extra soldiers aren’t coming. How do you explain this situation?”
The former Principal sounded frantic.
”Hey, over there.”
Normally, this would be the time for a meal. Next to a cart with a tablecloth—brought for the exchange—was another cart with a basket, filled messily with tablecloths waiting to be taken to the laundry. Half of that cart was a blind spot from their perspective. From that gap, we might be able to observe them from even closer.
”Well?”
”There’s a woman who looks like the commander—no, two, one of them is young. Plus one military officer. Two wearing chainmail. Six regular soldiers. One of them is carrying a bow and arrow. The hostages are gathered by the wall.”
This is a Magic Academy; the chainmail is likely the kind that disrupts Mana. It must be the same thing that Marque was wearing during the duel trial when he attacked Nico-san.
”What do we do?”
”We have no choice but to do it.”
”Idiot. How are we doing it?”
Yeah, yeah, you’re absolutely right.
We split up. I aimed for the position closest to the wall, and Kenze moved to target the chainmail wearers from behind. I initially suggested using a smoke screen, but she rejected it, arguing they might use the hostages as shields while they couldn’t see. Using yellow cartridges to suppress them was also shot down.
”We don’t know what kind of equipment the enemy has. We have to kill them. Use the red one.”
Even if I say I don’t want to kill, my hands are already dirty enough.
”Target the one with the bow and arrow first.”
”Understood.”
We split up. I moved to the spot closest to the wall, out of their line of sight. Kenze shifted slightly to the side, holding up her fingers.
Three.
Two.
One.
A fist.
I slowly stood up, entered their field of vision, and immediately fired the Coilgun at the man with the bow and arrow. The thick iron needle expanded like a shotgun shell, hitting the target.
As he fell forward, Kenze was already moving, hunched low, behind him.
I loaded the next cartridge. Naturally, the next targets were the former Principal issuing orders and the officer Kenze had identified.
Just as I leveled the Coilgun at them, a woman in a military uniform stepped out from next to the former Principal.
Second Lieutenant Sabrina.
I hesitated for a split second. In that time, the former Principal and the officer hid behind the soldiers.
”Damn it.”
I fired two shots as fast as I could, but only the soldiers went down. Kenze had taken out the first chainmail wearer, but she was struggling with the next one.
By the time I finished loading another round, Second Lieutenant Sabrina was charging at me.
”Why!”
I parried the tip of the rapier she thrust at me with the barrel of the Coilgun.
”I can’t go against my mother.”
She looked like she was about to cry, thrusting repeatedly. Was she under some kind of mind control?
She was from the Arsenal Bureau—people who usually have nothing to do with combat.
Still, he’s a soldier to the bone. The way he moves his blade is sharp, and I can’t afford a single lapse in concentration.
I can’t be afraid.
Can I slip inside his guard while dodging?
If I get close and fire a Mana shot, even if his bones break, he shouldn’t die.
There’s no opening.
”What are you hesitating for? Shoot.”
I hear Kenze’s voice.
She’s talking about the Coilgun. It’s loaded with the red cartridge right now.
If I fire into her chest at this point-blank range, Second Lieutenant Sabrina will die without a doubt.
But if I put distance between us, the seven-millimeter steel needles will spread out like buckshot.
The positioning has changed. If I mess this up, I could hit the hostages and kill them.
What do I do?
I kicked back hard and fired toward the ground.
Hoping for a ricochet.
The hope was rewarded.
The thick steel needles bit into her thighs and shins, and the Second Lieutenant dropped to her knees.
”Larry, look.”
While I was occupied with the Second Lieutenant, the former Principal, Annerose, had grabbed Marie by the hair and dragged her out from the group of hostages.
”Drop that prey, or I’ll skewer Marie and your children at the same time.”
While I was distracted, Second Lieutenant Sabrina pulled out the needles and began casting Heal on herself.
She can handle Complex-type magic, too?
”How filthy. Her water broke.”
Marie’s lower body was soaked, as if she’d wet herself.
The rough handling by the former Principal seemed to have ruptured the amniotic sac.
By then, the hostages had started to flee.
The two soldiers wearing the magic-nullifying Chainmail, provided by Kenze, were dead, and the other soldiers were incapacitated by my needle attack.
Only the former Principal, the male officer, and Second Lieutenant Sabrina remained.
That alone isn’t enough to hold them back with force.
”Damn you lot! I’ll hunt every one of you down later and turn you into slaves!”
She spewed abuse unbefitting a former Principal, but no one stopped.
Just then, someone lunged and clung to the hand holding the former Principal’s sword.
It was Henrietta-san.
I couldn’t worry about Second Lieutenant Sabrina anymore.
”Someone, bring as many towels from the laundry as you can! And clean water!”
It was Darina, Marie’s countrywoman, who shouted.
Henrietta-san shoved Marie away with her feet.
Darina pulled her hand, leading her away from the former Principal.
That was when I felt something hot against my back.
I turned to see Second Lieutenant Sabrina—not stabbing, but slashing my back with her rapier.
The pain from the needles must not have faded yet; if she had lunged for a thrust, it would have reached my lungs.
Looking closely, perhaps her Heal hadn’t finished completely, because her footing was unsteady.
But she raised the rapier again.
I see. Rapiers are originally double-edged swords—there’s that way of using them, too.
But this is a life-or-death struggle. I can’t afford to hold back anymore.
”You idiot!”
I screamed, and the largest Fireball I’d ever created engulfed Second Lieutenant Sabrina’s face.
Within the Fireball, the skin on her beautiful face bubbled and popped, the fat melting away to reveal the muscle beneath.
The rapier she’d raised fell from her hand, hitting the ground with a metallic clatter.
I didn’t stay to watch the end, turning instead toward the former Principal.
The man beside her had already had his heart pierced from behind by Kenze’s knife.
The next few seconds.
Whenever I think back, it always plays in slow motion.
My wife, Henrietta.
The former Principal kicked aside my clinging wife, trying to pull her sword free.
My wife couldn’t resist the force, and as she clung to it, the blade didn’t leave her body, instead tearing through the side of her neck.
The thumb of my wife’s right hand, which had been gripping the former Principal’s wrist, was sliced off by the force of the pull.
But that was just the beginning.
The sword tilted as it was being pulled out, biting into her neck, and by the time it was fully free, it had sliced open a third of her throat.
Air hissed from her lungs through the gap, and for a fleeting moment, blood sprayed from her carotid artery.
The color of life drained from her face in an instant.
Her eyes were wide open, yet her gaze saw nothing.
I reached out, but I couldn’t reach her.
Without being able to do anything, I witnessed my own wife’s life fading away.
I was brought back to reality by the sound of a baby crying.
I was sitting formally, supporting Henrietta-san’s head, holding her upper body diagonally in my arms.
There was still warmth, but what I held was a body devoid of life.
No breath, and no heartbeat.
I couldn’t connect through Mana; I couldn’t feel her Telepathy or her consciousness.
It didn’t feel like the weight of a living person.
She was dead.
I know that.
But I don’t want to let her go.
”Larry-san, it’s your little lady.”
Darina came to show me a red, fuzzy creature wrapped in a sheet.
Is this… a baby?
Mine?
An indescribable emotion welled up from the pit of my stomach, impossible to contain.
I cried.
I let out a loud, wailing cry.
Tears spilled down my cheeks, one after another.
”Hold her.”
After I’d cried until I had no voice left, I heard Darina’s voice.
Someone pulled the now-cold Henrietta-san away from me.
As I reached out, desperate to keep holding her, they placed the baby in my arms.
Warm.
I could feel her body heat through the sheet she was wrapped in.
”Pull yourself together. You’re that child’s father.”
