”Major Thomas Gotti. I believe you were a general in your own right here, were you not? Forgive me for interrupting your leisure, but I require an audience.”
Major Georg of the Royal Army General Staff’s Intelligence Bureau spoke with cold precision, his voice flat enough to make the request sound like an order.
”You’re late,” Thomas replied, leaning back in his chair. “Why didn’t you arrive when I placed the order through the Yoghess House Steward?”
He was talking about the request we had made some time ago through the commercial guild for farming equipment, potatoes, and the Type 98 Golems I had commissioned.
”You heard about us from Lieutenant Colonel Onhart, didn’t you?” Thomas said, fixing the two officers with a hard stare. “And surely you had some idea what was going on. You knew the Haritz remnants and the Universal Church’s monastic order1 were working together to tear this region apart.”
The monastic order in question was the Prooton Order. Georg and his men looked as though they had just bitten into something rotten.
”Well?” Thomas pressed. “What are the instructions from Headquarters?”
”Nothing yet. We have not been able to submit our report.”
The Bureau already knew about the border violation that brought the Knights through eastern Polotsk into Sami territory. They knew about the heavy cavalry unit that abducted Iri and Thiele in Yoghess before being wiped out at Cresar. They also suspected Haritz involvement after Type 20 Golems appeared in combat, although they claimed the final ship to Schweilitz had departed before winter arrived.
I had expected excuses and evasions, so their honesty caught me off guard.
”By the time we suppressed Cain,” I said, “the Haritz faction had already staged a coup and murdered the Lord along with his family.”
”And the Haritz remnants?”
”Before the latest battle, I had every one of them executed except Marc von Harritz.”
I explained that pro-Haritz supporters had already appeared among Cain’s leadership, so I could not risk anyone stabbing us in the back. Even Thomas seemed surprised hearing the full story.
”In that case,” Georg said, “turn Marc von Harritz over to us. Once the shipping lanes reopen, we will transport him back to the homeland.”
Neither Thomas nor I objected. Leaving Marc in Cain would only invite trouble.
”All right then,” Thomas said, relaxing slightly. “Let’s pick up where Lieutenant Colonel Onhart left off.”
Thomas recounted the events, and I filled in the gaps. We spoke of our accidental arrival in Yoghess, the skirmish that followed, the capture of the Type 20 Golems, and the discovery that Haritz supporters were spreading their influence throughout Cain. We covered the training of Yoghess’s men, the assault on Cain, the clash with the heavy cavalry at Cresar, and the rescue carried out by the town guards. We continued through the Prooton Order’s declaration of war, the request for aid from the Valfin tribe and the Sami, the Order’s advance into Mustopae, and finally the campaign that ended with me crushing the Prooton forces in Sami territory while Thomas secured Trabius.
Just as we finished, a sleepy voice drifted from the bed.
”I’m gonna check if she’s awake yet.”
The girl’s tone was innocent enough that it briefly cut through the tension in the room.
I approached the bed and informed the others of what I was doing. The captive girl was beginning to regain consciousness, so I reached out to draw out a little of her mana.
The moment I touched it, a chill ran down my spine.
This girl might have more mana than I did, and if she ever learned Simple-type Magic, she would be incredibly dangerous. The only reason she had remained tied up was because nobody had taught her how to use what she possessed. If someone like Iri had been in her place, the ropes would already have burned away and the building would likely be on fire.
”Thomas, what’s the story with this girl?”
”She’s the daughter of a priest from the Universal Church in Trabius. Why? Something wrong with her?”
He sounded completely unconcerned.
”But priests of the Universal Church aren’t supposed to marry.”
”How should I know? The guy had a wife and a mistress too.”
That explained a lot. Come to think of it, Thomas had proudly mentioned taking the priest’s mistress for himself—a woman whose figure rivaled Pia’s.
”For starters, she might have more mana than I do. If she stays near me and learns how to use it properly, we could end up dealing with something none of us can stop.”
Major Georg reacted before Thomas did.
”What do you mean by ‘something none of us can stop’?”
”You would not be able to take her alive. If she lost control, she could turn this entire town into a sea of fire.”
”Then does that mean Associate Professor Larry could do the same thing?”
It seemed like an obvious question.
”If I stopped caring about the consequences, yes. More importantly, when I glanced into her consciousness, I found a mess of emotions. She’s furious about her father’s death, and she’s obsessed with Thomas because he’s the one who killed him.”
”Obsessed with Thomas?”
”Apparently he matches every preference she has. At the same time, she resented her father for keeping both a wife and a mistress despite being a priest. The language barrier prevented me from digging any deeper.”
”I see.”
For some reason, Georg, his subordinates, and Captain Niakis all answered at the same time.
”Just so we’re clear,” I said, “I’m not taking responsibility for her.”
I established that boundary immediately. It was not that I could not deal with her. I simply did not want another problem attached to my name.
”But is it really safe to leave her with Major Thomas?”
”You’re not married, are you, Thomas?”
The giant man suddenly found the floor fascinating.
”The Universal Church only recognizes one spouse, but… so what? She’s young, isn’t she?”
”I’m a man who appreciates a substantial chest—”
”Save it. You want to settle down and farm here, right? A younger partner has more energy. If she’s a mage, she can manage pregnancy or contraception herself, and she can light a fire whenever she needs one.”
As I laid out the practical advantages, Georg looked increasingly doubtful.
”So what do the two of you intend to do now?”
There it was.
The hardest question of all.
”If I’m allowed,” Thomas said, “I’d like to retire from the Royal Army and spend the rest of my days farming and teaching agriculture.”
The answer was exactly what I expected, yet Georg’s expression did not soften.
”I suspect the homeland is in complete turmoil after the operation led by Onhart. There will be little room to approve such a request.”
His words brought an old memory rushing back.
Onhart’s group had returned with the Empress of Rus as a hostage, and the Emperor’s condition for her return was the transfer of Larland.
At first glance, Larland sounded like a prize. The territory was roughly the size of Schweilitz and possessed rich farmland. The reality, however, was far less attractive. The previous Emperor of Rus had seized it after wiping out the Larland royal family, but he never managed to govern it properly. Years of neglect had left the region fractured between competing warlords, one of whom was the Prooton Order.
The Kingdom would gain little from such a gift. Even so, abandoning newly acquired territory to chaos would be politically impossible. His Majesty had repeatedly declared that the rule of law formed the foundation of government, and a kingdom that accepted territory could not simply ignore anarchy within its borders.
Something would have to be done.
The problem was that we were already dealing with Kiridal. The ceasefire on the Western Front had expired, and the Empire itself was reeling from Boltechino’s invasion. It would not surprise me if they were trying to dump the Larland problem onto Schweilitz.
Perhaps it was speculation, but I was certain Georg had reached the same conclusion. That was why he dismissed Thomas’s dream so quickly.
”And you, Larry?”
Now it was my turn.
”I have a house and farmland in Strock Village, three wives, and a one-year-old son I’ve never met. I also own a home in the Royal Capital, although after being gone this long I would not be surprised if the Magic Academy dismissed me. Honestly, I’d like to go back to the village and spend my days farming.”
”You have caused enough change in this region to earn the title of the Fee Duke. Do you really think anyone will allow that?”
Excuse me?
I had spent most of my time preventing the Haritz remnants from taking power.
”Once the shipping lanes reopen, I will report directly to the General Staff and await orders,” Georg said. “Until then, do not do anything rash.”
”Rash?”
”Like declaring a principality.”
Thomas and I exchanged a look.
”That’s impossible,” Thomas said. “Even if I don’t declare one, the people around me probably will.”
”He’s right,” I added. “The people here already act as though I’m engaged to the granddaughter of the Lord of Yoghess and the youngest daughter of the former Lord of Cain, and nobody even bothered informing me. Once the border with Rus is finalized, they’ll create a principality whether I want one or not.”
”Then find a way to delay it.”
”And if we fail?”
”Both of you are still serving suspended death sentences.”
That unpleasant reminder hit home immediately.
Because of the emergency collapse of the Western Front ceasefire and the invasion carried out by Charle’s mercenary force, Geklan, I had been charged with acting beyond my authority. Thomas, meanwhile, had received a death sentence from a military tribunal after falling for an enemy feigned retreat.
”But the kidnapping mission succeeded, didn’t it?” Thomas protested, though even he sounded uncertain.
”I understand Lieutenant Colonel Helbert specifically ordered you not to kidnap the Emperor under any circumstances,” Georg replied. “So why did you abduct both the Emperor and the Empress? And why did the negotiation result in the transfer of Larland? Do you understand the position you’re in?”
Even as he spoke, Georg looked genuinely bewildered.
”Good grief.”
The words slipped out before I could stop them, and I pressed a hand to my forehead.
”I understand. We’ll resist as much as possible. How long do we need to hold them off?”
”The shipping lanes will not reopen until April. From here, it takes roughly ten days by ship to reach Holstein and another week by express horse to reach the Royal Capital. To be safe, assume twenty days one way and forty days round trip. If the matter requires debate—or if the King is away dealing with Kiridal—you should expect a delay of up to two months. Mid-May at the earliest. Early June at the latest.”
”We’ll stall as long as we can,” I said. “But there won’t be any more delays after that, right?”
I had waited, hoped, and endured long enough. If things dragged on and we ended up declaring a principality anyway, I really did not want to be executed over it.
After all, I had already warned them.
If they were late, that would be their problem.
Once the two Intelligence Bureau officers finally left, only Thomas, the girl, and I remained in the room.
“`text
”Where are you staying tonight?” I asked.
”I’m afraid I haven’t quite decided yet,” Thomas replied.
”What about the one with the big… you know?” I said, gesturing vaguely.
”That’s the occupied city of Trabius. I can’t exactly haul two women around on horseback. Bringing the girl back was difficult enough.”
So he had rushed all the way here with her for my sake. That was either incredibly thoughtful or deeply suspicious.
”In that case, I’ll be taking my leave.”
”Where to? You’re welcome to stay here.”
Yeah, right. Spending the night with Thomas was not exactly on my list of priorities.
”You’ve got the wrong idea. I’m not into virgins. Besides, you’ve got that sofa. I can sleep on a rug if I have to.”
The truth was that I had somewhere else in mind. It had been a week, I had drawn the lucky straw, and there were far more appealing ways to spend the evening.
”Actually, there’s somewhere I’d like to stop by first. You focus on your guest.”
”Now, hold on—”
Before he could finish, I slipped past him and opened the door.
”Oh, and lock the latch. It’d be pretty embarrassing if somebody walked in on you.”
Ignoring whatever protest followed, I closed the door and headed downstairs.
Halfway down, I crossed paths with the maid who had guided Georg and the others upstairs. She looked as though she wanted to say something, but after a brief hesitation she merely bowed and hurried away.
At the bottom of the stairs, an older woman approached with another maid in tow.
”Lord Fee? Where are you headed?”
”Just to see a friend. I gave my room to General Thomas, so I was looking for somewhere else to stay.”
”Is that so? Then please use a room on the second floor. The view is not quite as good, but the layout is identical.”
Her polished courtesy reminded me of the servants in old aristocratic stories.
”I’d feel bad imposing. This place can’t be cheap.”
”Not at all, sir. Prince Igor2 has reserved the establishment for the evening. If you were to leave, we would be the ones facing difficulties.”
That made refusing much harder.
”By the way,” I said, lowering my voice slightly, “is it possible to call a girl to the room?”
The woman smiled knowingly.
”Ah, of course. Please give me a moment.”
”Certainly.”
My answer came out a little faster than intended.
A high-class inn might well provide high-class service. The possibility alone was enough to brighten my mood.
The second floor proved identical to the third, just as she had promised.
”Please wait here for a moment.”
I assured her I would.
Once alone, I threw myself onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling. The last time I had spent time with a working girl had been back at Wolf’s place, and even then things had not progressed very far. As I let old memories drift through my head, a faint noise carried down from the floor above.
No way.
After everything he’d said, had Thomas really moved that quickly?
I shook my head and laughed to myself. That was his problem, not mine.
Time passed more slowly than I would have liked. I poured myself a glass of red wine, wandered around the room, opened the shutters to look outside, and checked the hallway more than once. By the time I finished a second glass, there was finally a knock at the door.
At last.
I opened it immediately.
A young woman stood outside wearing a sheer one-piece dress. Her makeup was subtle, and at first glance she looked almost too natural to be a professional. Her skin was smooth, and her appearance carried a quiet elegance that caught me off guard.

”Uh, you’re the one?”
”Yes. I’ve come to attend to you this evening. Please take care of me.”
Her voice was soft but practiced.
”Come in. It’s cold out there.”
She stepped inside, and I shut the door behind her.
A faint scent of soap drifted from her hair.
”Did you already bathe?”
”Yes. I wanted to make sure I didn’t cause any discomfort.”
”I appreciate the effort.”
That level of preparation was impressive.
As we spoke, I found myself reassessing my first impression. She had looked inexperienced at a glance, yet there was a calm confidence in the way she carried herself.
”You look like a beginner, but you’re surprisingly composed.”
”Thank you,” she replied with a small smile. “It’s thanks to the Manual of Boudoir Arts.”
”The Manual of Boudoir Arts?”
”Yes. It’s a technical book about relations between men and women.”
So something like that actually existed.
The answer amused me enough that I laughed. As we continued talking, I noticed that the dress she wore was split down the back and held together by three ribbons. The design immediately reminded me of the outfit Katri had worn in the bath, although this version was made from much finer silk.
I hugged her from the front, reached around to her back, and untied them one by one. Once finished, I pinched the silk hanging off her shoulders and peeled it away. Her breasts were still developing. Even though the room was warm from the heater, she had goosebumps.
I let the cloth fall to the floor and slid my palms from her shoulders, slowly gliding them over her skin. I cupped her tiny breasts, still firm—she couldn’t have had many customers. Thinking about how she was probably just trying to act grown-up, mentioning that manual, made this young prostitute seem all the more precious.
When I pinched her already-hard n**ples, she shivered and looked up at me shyly. I couldn’t help but kiss her. Good, my scent was gone. I stuck out my tongue, and she accepted it, immediately reaching back. I slid my left hand from her waist to her hips, and my right hand slid from her waist toward her crotch. She was wetter than a working girl should be. It occurred to me that she’d had almost no experience at all.
I moved my fingers back to her clitoris and pressed; a small sigh escaped her. Perhaps in retaliation, she reached for my crotch and nibbled on my earlobe. No, that’s my weak spot. When my movements became a bit clumsy, she pinched my n**ples. Even men are sensitive there—I was impressed a beginner knew that. Was it the manual?
I couldn’t hold back anymore; I pushed her down and mounted her. Now, it was my turn. I took her n**ples into my mouth, rolling them with my tongue, and explored every inch of her body with my free hand—her ears, nape, neck, collarbone, shoulders, armpits, back, the hollows between her ribs, her waist, her hips, her legs, and the insides of her thighs.
Then, I hoisted her thighs onto my shoulders, spread her legs, and buried my face in her. I slid my tongue over the salty, wet mucosa, and puckered my lips to suckle. Her reaction was top-tier.
I’m going to do it now.
I slid my index finger to the base of her slit and pushed. Wait. It was like Kenze’s. What was going on?
”Hey,” I asked, my voice a bit dopey. “By any chance… is this your first time?”
There was a pause before she answered, “Yes.”
I’d never heard of a virgin prostitute. But it felt strange to ask why. Maybe this was just the service level of a high-class hotel? The atmosphere had soured a bit, but when I tickled her clitoris with the rough tip of my tongue, she let out a cute sound.
Well, whatever. I’ll take it.
I found that “sweet spot” again, and with small, rhythmic movements, I slowly pushed in. First one finger, then two. The girl looked at me with an anxious expression, but she breathed in sync with my movements. It took a while, but unlike Iri, I managed to get two fingers in to the hilt, so I decided to use the real thing.
”Are you okay?” I asked.
”I am fine,” she whispered.
We exchanged those words as I pushed all the way in. The tip hit the round, slippery cervix.
”Shall we leave it at this for tonight?”
”No, please. Please go all the way with me,” she implored.
She said it with such intensity, like she was fulfilling a mission, so I decided, Fine, I’ll take you. I started moving my hips.
”Hey, can I finish in your mouth at the end?” I asked.
”If that is what you wish,” she replied.
She really was well-trained.
”I’m actually quite curious what’s written in a guide for the bedroom arts like that.”3
Then again, this was the finest hotel in the country. Did they just keep a stock of virgins somewhere? And on top of that, the level of training they received was impeccable. If I came back here, I wondered if I could request her specifically.
Underneath me, whether it was pleasure or pain, she let out small whimpers, the wrinkles between her brows dancing to the rhythm of our movements.
Before long, I held back the rising urge, pulled away, and brought her to a sitting position. I released what I had been holding back deep inside her open mouth.
I felt a bit bad about it, but then again, she was a professional.
I wanted to talk to her a little longer. But, understandably, the exhaustion from the day finally caught up with me, and my consciousness faded.
The next morning, when that maid came to wake me, the virgin prostitute was nowhere to be found. I would have to ask the lady in charge of the establishment how to request her next time.
Incidentally, the maid spoke with a soft, practiced grace as she tended to my needs. “If you would be so kind as to allow me, sir, I shall see to the cleaning,” the maid said, finishing the task just as Katri had done. Truly, the service of a top-tier inn was beyond compare.
I had been invited to breakfast by Duke Igor (Duke Bryachislavichi), so I headed over to the estate where last night’s banquet was held.
When I reached the dining hall, the Duke’s son and his wife were already there. I was just making small talk with them about nothing in particular when Duke Igor and his wife entered, accompanied by their butler and a young woman.
That face. I recognized her immediately.
A chill ran down my spine. The Duke and his wife were smiling.
”Good morning, Lord Fee,” Duke Igor said, his tone carrying the practiced weight of a nobleman. “Allow me to introduce my youngest daughter, Ellie.”
I had been set up. She was last night’s virgin.

The scene concludes with a plan to delay the declaration of a principality until the shipping lanes reopen in mid-spring, while Larry attempts to avoid further entanglements.
Fee secures a room at a high-class inn after yielding his own to General Thomas. He arranges for a companion for the night, discovering that the young woman sent to him is surprisingly inexperienced. The two engage in an intimate encounter as Fee navigates her lack of prior experience.
Lord Fee awakens after a night spent at an elite inn, reflecting on the encounter with a woman he believes is a professional. He attends a breakfast invitation from Duke Igor, only to suffer a jolt of realization upon arrival. The woman he was with the previous night is revealed to be the Duke’s own daughter, Ellie.

Trivia:
The Prooton Order is an offshoot of the Universal Church that has been operating as a warlord faction in the lawless Larland region.
Larry’s internal evaluation of the captured girl’s mana capacity suggests she is potentially a high-level magic user who lacks formal training.
The Kingdom faces a policy contradiction: refusing Larland while being legally obligated to suppress the anarchy within the annexed territory.
The death sentences hanging over Larry and Thomas stem from unauthorized actions during the Western Front ceasefire and the failure to recognize a feigned retreat.
Prince Igor of the Bryachislavichi clan has reserved the inn for the night.
The young prostitute attributes her knowledge of sexual techniques to a manual titled the Manual of Boudoir Arts.
The girl’s dress is a silk version of the one Katri previously wore in the bath.
The protagonist is explicitly identified as Lord Fee.
The Duke’s house name is identified as Bryachislavichi.
The maid service provided an intimate cleaning ritual similar to an existing acquaintance named Katri.
