Volume 3 Chapter 35 Son
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
As I changed into my formal wear and headed for the Viscount’s Palace, old memories began to surface.
The idea had been with me ever since my days haunting the Arsenal Bureau. Back then, I had wondered whether an otherwise useless permanent magic magnet could be used to spin an alternator—a mana generator—and produce magical current. My first plan had been simple: use a waterwheel to generate alternating mana-electricity, then convert it into direct current with a rectifier circuit made from processed amber, functioning as mana diodes.1 If mana could be stored in amber, then much of the work normally done by mages could be bypassed entirely.
The next leap came much later while I was waiting for a military tribunal after being accused of overstepping my authority during the Western Defense Campaign. Sitting alone with nothing but time to kill, I began wondering whether a steam engine could replace the waterwheel.
From there, the ideas only grew.
A mana-electricity alternator driven by a steam turbine, paired with a Cockcroft-Walton circuit capable of converting the generated current into high-voltage DC. I had already built a version of that circuit when creating the well-pumping system. From there, I had gone on to sketch designs for an iron ship powered through the Mana-ion craft phenomenon.
I had been bored, so I filled page after page with ideas.
Writing helped me focus. It chased away the loneliness, and before long I found myself becoming obsessed with turning every passing thought into a blueprint.
And now someone had taken those sketches and made them real.
Who?
Who had found my ideas and pushed them this far?
The thought hurried my steps as I crossed the Viscount’s Palace. The carriage should be arriving at the covered rotunda at any moment.
Unfortunately, my formal wear seemed determined to slow me down. The outfit felt like ceremonial riding gear—stiff, restrictive, and impossible to run in. Between the tall boots and the rigid collar pressing against my neck, it felt less like clothing and more like a device designed to force proper posture. Even in a hurry, I could not break into a run. I had to keep my back straight and move with measured steps.
Since word had arrived that the Fourth Sage would be attending from Schweilitz, there was little doubt that the smirking middle-aged man would be riding in the lead carriage. Lieutenant Colonel Helbert from the Intelligence Bureau was probably with him as well.
If Golems were riding in the cargo carriage behind them, then Louise—or perhaps the pink-clad Second Lieutenant Veronia—might be coming too. If the only familiar faces waiting for me were the Fourth Sage and Helbert, I might actually throw up. If Louise was here, however, that would be a genuine relief.
Lost in thought, I crossed the palace halls and reached the atrium before the entrance. The outer doors already stood open, while Thomas and the town guards waited in formation on either side.
I descended the stairs and headed toward them.
”This way, Your Grace,” the butler said with a bow.
He positioned me directly at the entrance. The man had once served as a butler in the Principality of Polotsk before being sent to Cain as a tutor to oversee preparations for the independence ceremony.
A jet-black carriage rolled to a stop before us.
The female soldier seated beside the coachman jumped down first and opened the door. A new-model coilgun hung from her shoulder, while cartridge belts crossed her chest. The insignia on her shoulders marked her as a second lieutenant.
Lieutenant Colonel Helbert stepped out and offered a crisp salute.
”Reporting as ordered, Your Grace.”
The Fourth Sage followed immediately afterward, waving cheerfully.
”Hi there! It’s been far too long, hasn’t it?”
Just as I expected.
The sight of that middle-aged man alone was enough to make my stomach churn.
Then another figure emerged from the carriage.
Major Sonya.
The moment I saw her, something tightened in my chest, and Katri immediately reached over with a handkerchief.
”Your Grace,” she whispered.
Sonya met my gaze and smiled like a predator spotting prey.
”Looks like we found him,” she said. “Feels like we’re about to cause some trouble today, yeah?”
Behind her, Second Lieutenant Veronia stepped out, dressed in pink as always, and the carriage door swung shut.
If Veronia was here, then the cargo carriage behind them almost certainly contained Golems.
”Well, well. To think His Majesty the Grand Duke would personally come out to greet us,” the Fourth Sage said with a grin. “We’re truly honored.”
”Not at all. You’ve traveled a long way. You must be exhausted.”
Please feel free to sleep until the ceremony is over.
Before I could dwell on that thought, the next carriage arrived. The same second lieutenant opened the door.
Pfft—!
A fine spray of saliva escaped my mouth.
Stepping out of the carriage was my sister-in-law, Teressa, carrying a small child in her arms.
”You’re disgusting,” Sonya said, wiping her sleeve across her face. “I can’t believe I have to deal with this.”
”Why…?”
The word barely left my lips.
”Why, indeed?” Teressa replied. “Surely we should not have this conversation standing in the doorway. Could you provide us with a room, darling, or are you too busy?”
The Fourth Sage was saying something about arranging a meeting, but I barely heard him.
Behind Teressa came Kenze the Amazon, followed by Master Sergei from the old village and a hooded man I did not recognize.
Then Teressa looked at me.
Our eyes met.
”Your Grace?” the Fourth Sage prompted.
Ignoring him, I stepped forward.
Lieutenant Colonel Helbert and Major Sonya exchanged a glance before quietly moving aside.
”Is that child… Reinhardt?”
Teressa’s smile softened.
”Reinhardt, say hello to Papa.”

She lowered the child to the ground.
With an uncertain wobble, he toddled toward me, wrapped both hands around my leg, and looked up with a brilliant smile.
”Pa-pa!”
My breath caught.
As I bent down to lift him, a sharp smack suddenly echoed through the atrium.
”Stop!” Thomas barked, throwing himself in front of the guards.
At the same time, Kenze shifted into a fighting stance.
”You’d best back off if you know what’s good for you.”
Master Sergei only chuckled.
”Back in my day, folks handled reunions a whole lot better than this. Then again, everybody here seems young enough to start a fight over anything.”
My chest felt ready to burst.
Without thinking, I stepped forward and embraced Teressa.
”Shall I summon Duke Igor of Yoghes, Minister Yani, and Minister Kirsi to the round-table room on the second floor?” the butler asked.
”Do that.”
My voice sounded strangely heavy.
When I reached toward Reinhardt again, however, the child pulled away.
”Oh dear,” Sonya said. “Looks like Papa’s been rejected. Hard to blame him. Leaving your child behind so you could enjoy your playboy lifestyle and all.”
”Fwahhh!”
Reinhardt laughed and reached toward her.
”He takes after his father,” Helbert observed. “No sense when it comes to women.”
”Quite true,” the Fourth Sage agreed.
”Honestly, nobody knows how to treat old ladies these days,” one of the older women grumbled.
”That’s the truth,” another added. “Thought the voyage was over, then they stuffed us into another carriage. Would it kill them to let us lie down first?”
”Indeed. What do they take us for?”
”Major, did you bring the old bags with you?”
”Yeah. They’re maintenance crew for the Type 98s. We were short on manpower and couldn’t spare regular soldiers.”
After that, accommodations were arranged for Teressa, Reinhardt, and Kenze so they could rest.
The rest of us headed for the round-table room.
”His Majesty the King of Schweilitz has decided to donate two of our latest Type 98 Golems free of charge, along with four maintenance packs for each unit,” Lieutenant Colonel Helbert announced.
Thomas failed to hide his delight.
”We have also brought personnel capable of supervising maintenance.”
”Furthermore,” Helbert continued, “Count Sabaski has devoted himself to agriculture and played a key role in the reforms that transformed our nation’s food production. We now export wheat and other crops and have effectively eliminated famine.”
At that, the two ministers immediately began whispering among themselves, wondering whether this man was the famous Fourth Sage.
* * *
”When I return home, I intend to have my student Sergei travel throughout the Grand Principality and share his expertise to help advance your agricultural development.”
The intent behind the offer was obvious. By sending Sergei, the Fourth Sage would gain both an escort and a chance to assess the strength of my country firsthand. At the same time, Sergei was a master in his own right and likely knew more about crops and cultivation than anyone in the room. When I glanced toward General Thomas, who was leading our agricultural reforms, he gave me a small nod.
”General Thomas is currently overseeing our agricultural reforms,” I replied. “I would be grateful for any advice you can provide.”
With that, I signaled my approval.
”Furthermore, I wish to apologize on behalf of His Majesty the King for our previous rudeness in mistaking Thiele-sama, the granddaughter of the Lord of Yoghes, for the Grand Duchess,” the Fourth Sage said, lowering his head slightly. “In addition, there are those who wish to welcome Thiele-sama as Queen of the Kingdom of Larland, whose royal line appears to have been broken. We humbly request your presence in the Royal Capital for a formal discussion.”
That was not entirely surprising. Thiele’s mother had been the eighth queen of the last King of Larland. Although the Empire of Rus had rejected the male line, a female branch of the royal family had survived here on the frontier.
If Larland was ever to be united again, it needed a symbol people could rally behind, and Thiele was the most suitable candidate. Whether that figurehead was a man or a woman mattered little, but the customs of the western nations dictated that a person married into another family could not ascend the throne.
That was why I had returned the gift2 His Majesty had sent through Robert, Helbert’s son. I wanted the world to understand that Thiele was not yet my wife, and it seemed that message had been received loud and clear.
The proposal reminded me of the former Larland town guard who had become a bandit. During his trial by combat, he had accepted his sentence with such dignity that he placed his own head on the block without even asking for a blindfold. His Majesty had been impressed enough to offer him a position instead. If Larland could produce men like that, then surely there were others who would rise up if given a banner to follow.
If Schweilitz supported them and unification succeeded, then Thiele and His Majesty could be married. Better yet, Thiele could use Mana. If the two of them produced an heir, the new kingdom’s future would be secure.
From a diplomatic standpoint, the Empire of Rus had already declared that Larland would be ceded to Schweilitz. There was little room for objection.
Some people would call it simple expansionism, but a stable nation was far preferable to endless feuds, murders, and raids. If I were being selfish, I might even wish they would absorb the Proton Order while they were at it.
Should everything proceed according to plan, the Saihites Sea would eventually be surrounded by nations friendly to Schweilitz. Free trade across the region would bring even greater prosperity.
I had thought this through carefully. Even if they acknowledged my Grand Principality, gifted us Golems, and taught us advanced agriculture, I still stood to gain more than anyone else.
”Is the Lord of Yoghes aware of this?” asked the Minister of Finance, the former fishery magnate.
The Lord of Yoghes kept his eyes lowered and said nothing. Judging from that reaction, Schweilitz had already informed him. If Helbert was involved, there was no chance he had neglected the groundwork.
Duke Igor sat beside him in the same silence. It seemed that only the two Cains—and perhaps Thomas—had been left out of the discussion.
”In that case, the Grand Duke’s wives will be Ellie-sama of the former Polotsk Principality and Sanna-sama, the youngest daughter of the late Lord Cain. Are you satisfied with that arrangement?”
Originally, the three great powers of this region—Cain, Yoghes, and Polotsk—had planned to offer me brides in order to unite the country.
Even if I did not take a bride from Yoghes, I would still need to treat them fairly. Otherwise, the nation would never remain stable. Besides, once Thiele became Queen of Larland, the Lord of Yoghes would become kin to a reigning monarch. His standing would surpass that of my own in-laws, so nobody would dare treat him lightly.
”That concludes the public matter,” Helbert said. The easygoing smile he usually wore had vanished, replaced by a sharp look that immediately put me on guard. “From here on, may we ask that everyone else leave the room, Your Highness?”
A bad feeling settled in my stomach.
Still, refusing was not really an option. I ordered my butler to clear the chamber. The maids serving as interpreters and the town guards acting as escorts filed out, and once the door closed behind them, silence settled over the room.
”Now then,” Helbert said in a polished voice, “let us discuss the real matter.”
”We ask that you retire from the position of Grand Duke next January and transfer the title to Reinhardt-sama.”
For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misheard him.
”…What?”
”It means that after the independence ceremony the day after tomorrow, Larry-kun will be accompanying us back to Schweilitz,” Helbert said with a faint smile.
”Heh? Larry-kun? Accompanying you?” I stared at him. “I am a Grand Duke, for heaven’s sake!”
The two ministers shifted uneasily in their seats, while Thomas looked just as bewildered as I felt.
”You promised that you would travel to the New Continent someday, remember?” the Fourth Sage said with theatrical encouragement.
”No, no, no. I finally found a peaceful place to live. Why would I leave now and head for the New Continent?”
”Max, remove your hood,” Helbert ordered.
The hooded man beside him obeyed.
The room erupted in surprise.
”You look remarkably similar. Is he a relative of the Grand Duke?” one of the councilors asked.
”His name is Max Thalbach,” Helbert explained. “He is your cousin, Larry-kun.”
”And for a time, he will serve as your body double.”
According to Helbert, the reason was simple.
Someone was trying to kill me.
The person behind it all was none other than the Pope of the Universal Church.
”They have branded you a devil’s advocate, my boy,” Helbert said calmly. “The Pope himself has issued the order for your death. Quite the troublesome situation.”
”A bishop of the Proton Order will attend the ceremony the day after tomorrow,” he continued. “We intend to capture him there. Since Major Sonya is present, we can have her uncover the truth and determine exactly what they are planning.”
”In the meantime, perhaps you should take some time to think seriously about your future.”
”Hold on. Something about this is not adding up,” I said. “A moment ago, you told me to hand the title over to my son in January.”
”Well, Max-kun cannot play your double forever, can he?” Helbert replied smoothly. “If you announce that you are stepping down after a month because you wish to travel in search of women, nobody will question it.”
”I see,” the Minister of Finance muttered.
I pointed at him immediately.
”You! Former fishery magnate! What do you mean, ‘I see’? What kind of world has a Grand Duke abandoning his country to go searching for women?”
”Are you really this determined to send me to the New Continent?”
”No,” Helbert said without hesitation. “This is entirely for your own safety.”
I narrowed my eyes.
”Are the believers of the Universal Church truly after my life?”
”Without question,” Sergei answered.
His voice was quiet, but it carried enough weight to silence the room.
The Old Masters had personally witnessed followers of the Universal Church gathering information about me throughout South Bohemia Province and the Danube River basin. They had also heard reports from a traveling merchant that the Pope himself was directing an assassination plot.
I wanted to dismiss the whole thing as another one of Helbert’s schemes, but Sergei’s words left me with no room to argue. When the Old Master confirmed it, the threat became impossible to ignore.
Damn it.
Since when had I become important enough for a Pope to want me dead?
