Volume 4 Chapter 12 Departure
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The evening before we left, a small farewell party was held on the front deck of the Izumo. There were fifty crew members in total. Normally it might have been a big ceremony, but they probably had reasons for keeping it quiet.
Everyone on board had to wear a uniform. Officers, non-commissioned officers, and regular soldiers—everyone except the captain—wore a white sailor suit with a loose top and dark blue trousers. The only differences were the rank marks on the shoulder straps and the patterns on the collars and hats that showed job and rank.
To my surprise, Pamela the slave wore a corporal’s uniform with a red “Rhein” pattern on her collar and hat, meaning she was in the medical unit. She had become a “Medical Mage” without a license—and a corporal at that. Was this really going to be okay?
”It’ll work out somehow, won’t it?” Pamela said lightly.
The Fourth Sage said it with a cool face. Was that really okay?
Surprisingly, Pamela had been given a bankbook from the Kingdom of Schweilitz, listing her as “Medical Mage Pamela Fee” of the Fee Grand Principality. They were certainly using my old country whenever it was convenient.
The bankbook also worked as an ID, and it already had travel money for the voyage. Her monthly pay from the state would be put into that account from now on.
”You poor thing, when you don’t have the money for a haircut, I’ll lend you some at the ‘Toichi’ rate,”1 she said, tapping my head with the bankbook. Pat, pat.
This head of mine had just had its first real haircut in this world. Since Yutia shaved it for me in the village over two years ago, I had kept it long, tied back in a ponytail that reached below my shoulder blades. But since we were going on a voyage, I had spent my last bit of money to have it shaved completely bald.
”It’s not that I’m poor; I just don’t have the bankbook on hand. Once I get it…”
I tried to make excuses, but Pamela and Kenze found my bald head endlessly funny. After messing with it for a while, it ended with the pat-pat of the bankbook again.
By the way, the haircut cost what was left after I paid back eight of the ten gold coins I had borrowed from AlanDean. After that, I only had three silver coins and a few small silver and copper coins left.
”You should get a haircut once a month, ahahaha!” Pamela laughed.
At that, she tapped my head with the bankbook again.
When I asked about Pamela’s change in status, I had begged the Fourth Sage to do the same for Kenze, but I was told that since she was a former criminal and not a mage, it was impossible.
Even at the farewell party, my shaved head got attention, and I ended up being laughed at without even trying.
”Chief, if you haven’t finished your ‘Rite of Passage’ yet, I can introduce you to a good shop,” a deck crewman teased me. Apparently, I looked really young.
In particular, Sergeant Hebel Hagen (from the Larland Independence War), who had never seen me with short hair, was rolling on the ground laughing. By the way, she was someone who had gotten pregnant by me while I was sedated, but she had lost the baby.
For me, this was the second time after Louise. Even in my past life in Japan, five percent of pregnancies ended that way. In a world like this, with bad food and poor hygiene, I guess I had to accept it as something that happens.
Just as I was seriously thinking about that…
”Hee-hee, you’re funny! My stomach hurts from laughing. I really do want your kid, though.”
After laughing endlessly at my head, that flashy lady said that casually while wiping away tears. No thanks.
This mission, on which the fate of the nation rested—His Majesty couldn’t come, but the Admiral of the Navy, Marquis Sabaski, was there.
I had seen him from a distance before, but this was my first time up close. He wasn’t as tall as I had imagined, and his face looked quite young.
When he stood on the slightly raised front of the ship, with music from a band of only drums and woodwinds, a high-pitched cheer went up. He seemed very popular among the women.
The front deck of a three-masted warship only fifty meters long wasn’t very big. With over a dozen guests, fifty crew members, and soldiers serving food, there was no way everyone could stand there. Many of the deck crew climbed the rope ladders on the front mast, and female mages stood on the open bridge. The place was lit by bright Luminous Magic Iron (a magic metal that glows), making it feel like a lively festival.
I was curious what the man known as the “trusted blade of His Majesty the King,” Marquis Sabaski, would say.
When he stood at the highest point, the music stopped. As soon as the Marquis’s gentle face tightened and he gave a salute that made everyone stare, the noise disappeared instantly.
”I am Admiral Marquis Wilhelm von Sabaski.”
His low voice echoed.
He then gave a passionate speech about how controlling the sea in the Inland Sea (Mediterranean) would weaken and destroy the Empire of Charle—the agents of the Pope of the Universal Church, who do evil in the name of religion—and our country’s enemy. When the soldiers were fired up, he announced that the Kiridal royal family had surrendered and that Kiridal was now our territory, which brought roars of cheers and applause.
”Glory to the Kingdom of Schweilitz and our allies!”
As he shouted, the excitement in the place reached its peak.
His speech was so smooth and clear that I couldn’t help but wonder if Hitler or Napoleon were like this; his ideas spread through the soldiers. But about the Amazoness, he only said they were pawns of the Empire of Charle and had kidnapped the genius Rosa. It seemed strange to me that he didn’t mention that kidnapping Rosa was the Amazoness’s own choice, or the fight between the Amazoness and the Empire of Charle. I took this to mean that for him, the speech was about boosting morale, so he left out complicated details and just made the enemy and the ally clear.
The front deck was packed, but there were small standing tables for the important guests and the ship’s top officers. From there, the President of the Naval Academy took over from the Marquis and went to the front to lead the toast.
Once the toast was over and the banquet started, soldiers began running around with alcohol and food.
Having finished his work, the Marquis took a silver wine glass that was ready for him and started talking with other guests and the Captain.
”I don’t like it,” Camillo Erskine remarked.
Camillo Erskine, the tall Elf Mage and Chief of the Engineering Department standing next to me, said it to himself while looking at the Marquis. It wasn’t something to worry about, but wondering why a Marquis who was so popular would act this way, I drank my silver wine glass dry while keeping my eyes on his face.
”Why is he bringing an army bodyguard?”
Even during the speech, the two military officers who were always in the Marquis’s shadow had the Army’s horseshoe emblem on their shoulder straps instead of the Navy’s stars.
”Well, isn’t it because he’s spent his whole life fighting on land?” I said to the Elf Mage after finishing my wine.
In fact, during the war with Kiridal, when the Marquess of Haritz rebelled and His Majesty, who had been leading the campaign, returned to the country, Marquis Sabaski had held the front lines. It is said that among the many generals, he was the only famous commander who could firmly hold that line. I think Marquis Sabaski deserves the most credit for taking Kiridal.
”This is the Navy. And the Marquis is the head of the Navy. I’m just saying there should have been enough soldiers to serve as his guard.”
Well, I don’t think having that kind of territorial thinking is necessarily bad, but I felt a Department Chief should have a bit more depth. I had a question for the Elf Mage, so I asked.
”Chief Camillo, may I ask you one thing?”
”What is it, shorty?” Camillo scoffed.
”Why are you the Chief of the Engineering Department?”
It was just a guess, but I had the impression from my past life that Elf Mages lived in trees, were good with bows and arrows, or told fortunes, and many of them—like Granny Ferris or the weird Chulpan—worked in Medical Magic. I thought Engineering would be more of a Dwarf’s job. Well, I kept that to myself and just asked.
”Hmph, if it’s the Engineering Department, I can just stay cooped up in the engine room. That fits me.”
No, no, you have to check the steam pressure, watch the coal stock and freshwater use, maintain the turbines, oil the bearings, and clean the chimneys. You can’t just sit still.
”Those things are for the underlings to do.”
Something is wrong with this guy. He’s a shut-in with nothing but pride.
Come to think of it, I didn’t know many male Elf Mages; this was the first time I had talked to one, and all the Elf Mages I had met so far, except for my student Tura, had terrible personalities. Sonya, Chulpan, and so on. I felt a little sorry for his two subordinates—my students, Janet and Claudia—who seemed to have lost the “boss” lottery.
From then on, I decided to call Chief Camillo the “shut-in Elf Mage” in my head.
The food was sparse, and I was getting nicely drunk on wine. The Marquis came over to us with his two bodyguards.
”Master Camillo, my apologies for the late greeting. Have you been well?” the Marquis asked respectfully.
Master Camillo? To think the Marquis would be this humble. Then, he greeted me right after.
”Are you Second Lieutenant Larry Fee Getys?”
He used my full name.
”Nice to meet you, Marquis Sabaski.”
”Second Lieutenant Larry, please call me Admiral here.”
He seemed like a person of high character. But…
”Vil, why do you have Army officers as bodyguards?” Camillo barked.
The shut-in Elf Mage called the Admiral by a nickname.
”This is the Navy. We are about to leave. If you, an Admiral, have Army officers as bodyguards, people might think you don’t trust your Navy comrades. Such small things affect morale and can even decide a battle.”
”Ha, my sincere apologies.”
To my shock, the Marquis bowed his head. Then the two men behind him quickly took off their Army caps and jackets.
While I was staring, stunned, one of the Army officers told me that this shut-in Elf Mage was an Honorary Professor at the Military Academy and had been the teacher of the First Sage. The First Sage was the person (Reincarnated Person) who had gotten rid of mercenaries and founded the Royal Army over a hundred years ago. Elf Mages live a long time. I guess that sort of thing happens.
Did that mean his reason for becoming the Engineering Department Chief was a lie?
”Your countrymen, Michel and the Bours family, were also his students. You should ask them when you return to the village. Besides, Ferris…”
”Vil, don’t say unnecessary things,” Camillo snapped.
The Marquis, whose name was cut off, shrugged and chuckled like a naughty child who had just been scolded.
”Ferris? Did he mean Granny Ferris?” I asked. But the conversation didn’t go any further.
The Marquis also told me that this shut-in Elf Mage’s favorite theory was that the outcome of a battle is decided by how well you prepare.
”Consider the battle lost by the time you see the enemy soldiers,” the Marquis said, repeating his favorite saying.
I didn’t want to think it was possible, but was he trying to decide the fate of a naval battle through the engine room?
Surely, that was impossible.
”Admiral, may I ask you something?”
As the talk about the shut-in Elf Mage quieted down, an officer who had taken off his jacket spoke up.
”Is this boy really that Larry von Fee-dono?” the officer asked.
”Aye, without a doubt,” the Marquis replied. “I was there to see his duel trial against the grandson of Haritz. The fight with Sonya was quite a sight.”
They were bringing up old stories.
To think even the Marquis knew my name. I must have been a famous figure. And yet, the way the country treated me wasn’t exactly great.
But the Army officer didn’t seem to understand that.
”Um, Larry-dono… no, Lieutenant Larry, may I ask you one thing?” the officer asked.
The Army officer asking the question wore the shoulder boards of a Captain. He was higher rank than me, yet he was using polite language.
”What is it?” I replied.
”Is it true that at your age, you’ve already fathered children in the double digits?” the Captain asked.
Eh? He’s asking that? With honorifics?
Wait a minute.
There’s Reinhardt (Sister-in-law Teressa), Angelica (Marie), Griselda (Nico), and Peter (Louise)—that’s four.
Ah, and five if you count the child of Manuela, whose name I still don’t know.
And since Ellie should have been born by now, that makes six.
Even if you count the possibly born children of Pia and Katri, that’s eight.
Where in the world did a rumor about double digits come from?
”Don’t ask such rude questions,” another Army officer said, scolding the one who had asked about the number.
Thank goodness, someone understands.
”Um, what I’d like to know is, is it true you got Lieutenant Louise of the former 101st Golems Battalion and Isabella, the former leader of the ‘Weasels of Bohemia’ mercenary group, pregnant?” the first officer pressed.
Haaaah.
If they were with Marquis Sabaski, they must have met those two during the battle at Kiridal. They were asking this with that in mind? What rude guys.
”That’s something I’d like to know as well,” the Marquis added. “I heard Louise gave birth, but did you do it with Isabella too?”
You’re playing along too much, Marquis.
”Ho, so this shrimp was quite the player, was he?” the Elf Mage remarked.
You’re noisy, you shut-in Elf Mage.
And so, the night grew deeper.
* * *
The next morning, after leaving Kenze with the Fourth Sage, I boarded the Izumo.
By the time the crew’s roll call was finished, smoke and steam were rising from the funnels.
The navigation bridge crew moved to the bridge, the deck crew climbed the masts, and, except for some of the engineering staff, they lined up on the side facing the pier.
Since I was in charge of the torpedo division, I stood at the bow.
As the band began to play a light tune, the people seeing us off gathered on the pier.
Among them were parents who looked like families.
In that crowd, I could see Louise, who hadn’t been able to come the night before because the new school term at the youth academy had started.
Marquis Sabaski was there, bringing along two Army officers dressed in enlisted sailors’ uniforms.
I also saw Tura, whom I couldn’t meet because she was too busy, along with other former students.
And in the closest spot, right at the edge of the water, Kenze came running up.
The band’s music stopped.
Pwooooo.
A slightly strange whistle sounded, and the crew, the people seeing us off, the old and the young—everyone I could see saluted.
Except for Kenze, who kept calling out my name and Larry’s.
That voice reminded me of her shouting on the other side of the collapsed bridge in the snow in Rus.
This voyage… it’s full of firsts, and I don’t know when I’ll be back, but I will return, and next time, I’ll come to get you at the Old Master’s village.
The band began to play a heavy, monotonous departure song.
As the hull quietly started to move, Katrina and two others launched the fixed-wing drone for watching.
The three machines formed a line, slowly rising and circling above the ship.
Kenze, who had been walking alongside the ship, stopped at the end of the pier, still calling out “Larry.”
Maybe seeing that, the children—who seemed to be among the crew—started running the same way, shouting “Papa” or “Mama.”
Still, the ship moved on.
Before long, the people on the pier began to look small.
Only Louise, who was slightly taller than those around her, was easy to pick out.
By the time the voices of the children and Kenze could no longer be heard, the Izumo began to turn to the right.
Pwooooo.
Once again, that somewhat weak whistle sounded.
”As you were!” I commanded.
As I gave the order to stop the salute, the fixed-wing drone returned as well.
”Steady as she goes! Fore-mast and main-mast, unfurl the sails!”
The order from the bridge was passed down like a game of telephone, and before long, the new ship Izumo slowly picked up speed, heading toward the exit of the bay.
