Volume 4 Chapter 69 Dregs
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
There are two major ports in the Royal Capital.
One is near the western entertainment district—this one mainly handles industrial goods like lumber, coal, and iron products. The other is near Ariane’s shop, and it mainly handles foodstuffs.
Since medicine is considered a foodstuff, that’s why my sister’s shop is there. The ship Nico’s old man and I rode in on was also a medicine transport—it docked at this very port.
It was dusk. Fresh fish and vegetables were being unloaded, so the area around the port was teeming with brokers and regular customers hunting for ingredients for tonight’s dinner. With that kind of chaos, the pre-port inspection was quick and simple at best. The official just called out to the boat captain. Thanks to that, even me—an illegal immigrant—got into the Royal Capital without any trouble.
”Next stop is the Paper Guild,” the old man said.
According to him, it was on the main street in front of the Joint Government Building—close enough to walk during the daytime. But there were too many people. Carrying a backpack frame was fine, but I also had a dangerously unwieldy spear, so it took more than twice as long.
I’d assumed the Paper Guild would be some minor organization, but the building we arrived at was four stories tall—comparable to the Pharmacist Guild, actually bigger. The products displayed on the first floor weren’t just parchment and ordinary paper. They carried magic ink, pens, rulers, compasses for drafting blueprints… if anything, it was more of a stationery wholesaler.
When the old man entered the shop, people flocked to him.
”Take this one to the reception room and have him wait,” he said, pointing at me, addressing the most important-looking person among those who’d gathered. “I’ll be bringing the official from the Kingdom Office. It might be late, so leave a few staff members behind.”
He was already ordering someone else to prepare a carriage.
”Is the old man a big shot here or something?”
When I asked Mr. Lubellman quietly, he said Vogt had been guildmaster for decades and was still a board member.
”That most important-looking person? He was the longtime assistant to the big husband of this guild.”
To have served as that short-tempered, muscle-headed old man’s assistant for so long—with his habit of whipping out his sword at any provocation… what kind of incredible person do you have to be? When I looked over, the man was looking back at me with a slightly troubled expression.
”Larry, we’ve got time—wanna hit up a used clothing store nearby?” Mr. Lubellman whispered to me.
Right. I’d been sleeping rough for a week. I had goblin blood on me. And even aside from that, my threadbare shepherd’s clothes were filthy and my body odor was sour.
”Hey, Mr. Lubellman—your clothes are spotless,” I noticed.
He said that when they stayed in the Riverside District—where the pleasure houses are—they’d washed and dried everything overnight, and he’d even gotten cleaned up at the bathhouse with all kinds of… special treatment.
Meanwhile, I’d nearly been killed by Emma, and after that I’d spent the night alone in a cargo hold piled high with fumigation bags. Life really wasn’t fair.
Still, he was right—I wasn’t in any shape to meet people. I followed Mr. Lubellman to the used clothing store. But maybe because I looked so grimy, the shop owner wouldn’t let me try anything on. Thanks to that, when I got back and put them on, they were hilariously small. I looked pathetic—in a completely different way from the shepherd’s clothes.
I washed myself with water from the guild’s horse trough.
I was worse off than a slave at this point.
By the time I got back to the guild, the sun had set and it was dark outside. They must’ve been doing well—every single lamp was luminous magic-iron. Under that bright light, I was served dinner: a bread roll with pickled herring—a rarity around here—and a stew of onions and big chunks of bacon.
After the meal came coffee.
I’d drunk plenty of it during the voyage, so it was nothing special to me—but Mr. Lubellman’s jaw practically hit the floor.
”This guild must be raking it in,” he muttered.
An hour after finishing our coffee, the old man still hadn’t returned. Most of the guild staff had gone home, leaving only the guildmaster, his assistant, and one maid.
”Why d’you say that?” the guildmaster asked.
I told him—because there were barely any people here, yet they had the luminous magic-iron lamps blazing bright.
”Ah, that’s ’cause these days, even non-mages can charge amber with mana. Brought the price of charging way down. Used to be we’d switch to poor man’s lamps after hours,” he said with a chuckle.
”Non-mages can?”
”Bet you wouldn’t know, coming from the sticks, but there’s a machine now—waterwheel-powered—that generates mana and charges amber.”
So the alternator had finally made it into civilian use.
”Bet the price of amber shot up, then?”
”Nah, artificial amber’s been developed. Prices dropped.”
The guildmaster—a genuinely refined old man—took down an amber from the lamp on the wall to show me. It was medium-sized, unusually pale, with a small fragment of scrap amber embedded in it.
”The pale part’s pine resin. Runny when it’s harvested, but you stick a piece of amber in, channel mana into it, and it solidifies into a big, proper amber for mana storage. Durability ain’t as good as the real thing, but they say you can replace the resin and reuse it.”
I tried channeling my own mana into it through the scrap amber’s navel. A white line spread into the resin. When I brought it to my nose, it had a faint, refreshing pine scent.
”That’s incredible,” I said. “People must be thrilled. Cheap luminous magic-iron light for everyone.”
”Well, magic-iron lamps themselves are still expensive since there’s no substitute, but for handling ’em… yeah. That said, the folks who made their living charging mana, and mages who did it for pocket money, got angry. Burned down a few charging stations.”
I hadn’t thought about that when I was locked up drafting blueprints—people losing their jobs to this new technology.
”What happened to them?”
”Rioting in the capital. Normally, that’d mean execution, but considering the circumstances, most were sold into slavery. A lot of the mages were women—sent to the pleasure quarters. I hear it’s improved the quality of the courtesans. If you’re interested, go have a look.”
Yeah, no. I wouldn’t be able to get it up from guilt alone—and that’s assuming the girls even have clean bills of health. If I went to a brothel in this body, I’d probably be responsible for a pandemic.
”So Type-1 Simple Magic users are completely out of work, then?”
”Hearing you ask that—you’re no country shepherd boy. You a mage, or something related?”
Busted.
”Yeah, something like that,” I said vaguely.
”If you’re Level 1, join the military. Army and navy are both recruiting mages big-time. Good pay, and since most mages are women, a young man like you’d have a field day. Heck yeah.”
This guildmaster, despite his refined appearance, was quite the lecher. Working under that old man for so long must have warped his tastes. Poor guy.
”I’ll think about it,” I said, then asked about the old man. “Speaking of the military—I heard Vogt’s old man attended a military academy once. Was he a soldier?”
The guildmaster shook his head. Helmut—the old man’s name—had dropped out when his father died, helped his older brother take over the family business, and then lost that brother too. While helping his brother, he’d followed his father’s dying wish and developed farms that supplied parchment. Now the Vogt shop controlled a fifth of the Kingdom of Schweilitz’s parchment production and had strong ties with the Kingdom Office.
”What an accomplished man,” I said, joking.
”You’d think so, wouldn’t you? But he’s short-tempered and impulsive on the surface—when actually, he thinks things through carefully. Always has.”
The guildmaster’s reply made me struggle to hold back a laugh.
He also told me how the guild had pushed for ordinary paper made from plant fibers, and how the brown paper of old had been refined to a white almost as good as fine parchment. I privately suspected some technical know-how from the Androgynos Group was behind it.
While we were talking, several carriages pulled up outside the guild. People entered the building, and the guildmaster told me to stand.
First came the old man. Then, of all people, His Majesty’s uncle—Duke Gerhard—along with a butler-looking man.
”Long time no see, young’un,” the Duke said, taking the seat of honor that the guildmaster offered.
Next came the Fourth Sage and Professor Karl, both smiling. Karl’s smile was welcome—but the Fourth Sage’s was the kind that made you worry what he was plotting.
Then came Helbert’s middle-aged son—Robert Major, from military intelligence, same as his father. And then, of all people, Major Sonya.
For the Duke’s protection, I assumed? With him here, there were probably soldiers stationed outside, too.
The reception room, spacious as it was, filled up quickly. The Duke took the seat of honor. The Fourth Sage and Professor Karl sat on either side of the table, along with Robert Major and Sonya Major. The old man, the guildmaster, and the rest remained standing. For some reason, Robert ordered me to have my chair removed and kneel on the floor opposite the Duke’s table.
I complied reluctantly. And then the Fourth Sage spoke.
”To get straight to the point—the King Celt has passed away.”
If the King Celt was dead, did that make Tina the Queen of Celt Kingdom? I remembered hearing that the princess with the first claim to the throne had renounced it. That meant Tina—allegedly my fiancée—held the second claim.
”And so His Majesty the King will depart the day after tomorrow to attend the funeral. The palace is in a frenzy right now.”
Of course. Otherwise, a duke wouldn’t be visiting a specific guild.
”I’ve heard the gist from former Guildmaster Helmut Vogt, but first—is there anything you’d like to say?”
I pulled out the letter from the Androgynos Group’s elder and the bag of seeds—peppers and such. The Duke’s butler-like man delivered them to the dignitaries. The Duke broke the wax seal without hesitation, scanned the letter quickly, while the Fourth Sage examined the seeds beside him.
”Same as I heard from Helmut. Rejoice—His Majesty has authorized a medical relief team, led by Professor Karl.”
Having Karl with us was a great relief.
If Duke’s words could be trusted–and permission had already been granted–it looked like I might be able to head back soon.
”By the way, Larry, there’s something I’d like to ask.”
Just when I’d let my guard down, Fourth Sage began speaking with a grave expression.
”Last week, a group claiming to be emissaries from Queen Kakuka of the Nyunpai Kingdom requested an audience with His Majesty.”
Huh. That Queen moves faster than I expected.
”They came offering to exchange Princess Nikaure Saba, currently in our custody, for the former Captain of the Izumo, Birger Dons, and the former Chief Engineer, Camillo Erskin.”
Former Captain? Former Chief Engineer?
That “former” part bothers me.
”Which brings me to my question: who is currently the Captain of the Izumo? And I’d also like to know what became of the Rosa assassination.”
Crap. Crap. Crap.
I’d forgotten something really important.
The moment that thought crossed my mind, Major Sonya grabbed me by the neck.
’My dear Larryyyyy~ No lying now.’
So that’s why Major was here–for an interrogation.
’That’s right, I was summoned via Magical Interrogation. I’m supposed to be guarding His Majesty on the trip to the Celt Kingdom, you know? Do you understand? I’m incredibly busy. This is such a nuisance.’
Y-yes, I suppose so.
”Oh my my~ So you didn’t kill Rosa.”
Major suddenly switched from telepathy to speaking aloud. Duke’s expression hardened.
”Heeey~ So Larry sold the Captain and Chief Engineer to the Amazoness.”
”No, no, no–I just told the Queen that if she wanted to prioritize the exchange for Nikaure, the Captain and Chief Engineer would be better than me!”
Nobody believed me. It was the truth. Well, about fifty percent of it, anyway.
”So with the Captain gone, that makes Larry the acting Captain.”
Even Karl had stopped giving me that friendly look.
”I see, I see. You didn’t want to kill Rosa because she was your student. You were only ordered to confirm the body, so you figured you might get off lightly if you didn’t actually kill her. How naive.”
Figures. I’d suspected as much.
”Hmm~ So there are no monsters on the Southern Continent. Then Rosa wouldn’t have been able to show off her skills anyway. But that’s not really the point, is it?”
This was shaping up to be the worst possible outcome. Without Sonya here, I might’ve had the option to run–but with her grip on my neck, and her overwhelming mana advantage, there was nothing I could do.
”Hmm~ So you still don’t know if he has an STD yet?”
Ah, I’m done for.
I looked up–and Fourth Sage was the only one laughing.
”Truly, you never bore me.”
Why, thank you.
”Under Military Law, Larry has committed two violations. First: failing to carry out Rosa’s assassination. You’ll say you were only ordered to confirm the body, but as acting Captain, the order transferred to you. That Rosa was your student, and that the Southern Continent had no monsters–neither of those are valid excuses.”
Yeah, I was vaguely aware of that.
”Second: you handed your superior officer, the Captain, over to a foreign power to be detained, and in doing so, made yourself acting Captain. That is, by any measure, rebellion.”
Huh. So that’s how it is.
”Both of these military violations carry the maximum penalty–death.”
Figured as much.
”However, last time you also escaped the death penalty.”
Right–back then, I’d been sentenced to death for overstepping my authority, but in the end, it all got swept under the rug.
”His Majesty has indicated that we may do the same this time. Frankly, you were never going to kill Rosa, and once the Amazoness proposed a prisoner exchange, we’d already anticipated this.”
’Is that true?’
I asked via telepathy.
’That’s why I could read your mind so easily. Besides, His Majesty intends to have you cured even if you do have an STD, then make you Tina’s husband. So you won’t be killed.’
I wish they’d drop that part.
”As I’m sure you understand, most of your family resides in this country. The Fee Grand Principality still cannot stand without our kingdom’s aid. You’re not foolish enough to miss the implications. We’re turning a blind eye to your third death penalty offense. Be mindful of that.”
Duke delivered the final word. Translation: if family matters to you, don’t even think about defecting.
Holding my family hostage while refusing to let me resign. It felt like I was working for some black company.1
Sure, I’m a reincarnated person from another world–but in this world, I’d taken a wife, taken a lover, and fathered many children. I cared for them, in my own way. And this whole mess was of my own making. I’d considered defecting more than once, but for now, I’d put that thought aside.
I was placed in Professor Karl’s custody, and that night, I was allowed to stay in the Magic Academy’s men’s dormitory as a special exception.
We arrived at the Academy late at night, so the only one around was the stiff Dorm Head Henrietta. She took one look at me–in my tiny clothes, hauling a backpack frame piled with dirty blankets and clothes, clutching a shabby spear–and raised a fuss. Even with Professor Karl’s request, she insisted she couldn’t let someone this weird into the Academy.
After a while, she finally realized I was once an associate professor here, and grudgingly agreed to let me stay. It had been ages since I’d been in a dorm, and I was even allowed to take a bath. For the first time in a while, I slept in an actual bed.
The next morning, over breakfast with Karl, I explained why I’d sold the Captain and Chief Engineer, and confessed how I couldn’t bring myself to kill Rosa. That seemed to ease some of his distrust toward me.
Afterward, I became a spectacle in Professor Karl’s Third Laboratory.
”All right, get up there.”
Karl gestured to the delivery table. It was a slightly reclined chair with leg rests on both sides–you sit, put your feet up, and spread your legs wide. Naturally, I wasn’t wearing anything below the waist. And once my feet were on those curved rests, thanks to my complete lack of flexibility, I couldn’t get down on my own.
”Okay, we’re ready. Bring them in.”
At Karl’s signal, more than a dozen people filed in–students, researchers, assistant professors, and associate professors–all lining up in front of me in that humiliating position. Nearly all of them were women. The only men were Karl and one assistant professor.
”Today, we have a special volunteer for our lab work: Mr. Larry, who used to be an associate professor here. Let’s give him a round of applause.”
I really didn’t need the applause.
Near me were the students; behind them, the researchers; and further back, the faculty. Among the researchers, I spotted Darina–Karl’s wife and Marie’s hometown friend. Our eyes met. Mortifying.
”First, let me explain the p**is’s structure.”
Karl said this as he lifted my p**is with what looked like a pair of cooking chopsticks.
”It’s a bit covered by skin. What do we call this?”
”Phimosis.”
A student answered.
”Correct. Now, would you use tweezers to retract the foreskin?”
The female student took tweezers in both hands, pinching my foreskin with one and holding it steady with the other, and slowly retracted it.
”Professor, what’s this white stuff?”
”That’s smegma. Colloquially, it’s known as ‘d**k cheese.’”
”Is it bad for you if you eat it?”
”It’s fine if you’re in good health.”
”Oh, good. Because the other day… his got in my mouth.”
”Make sure they wash it before you do it.”
The conversation was veering into uncomfortably personal territory, but I was too embarrassed to care–I just wanted it to be over.
