Volume 4 Chapter 73 Overdose
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Marie was completely sloshed. She was mumbling something like, “Nico, let’s get it on~,” without even realizing who she was actually talking to, pressing herself against me.
Probably an overdose of the mana-boosting decoctions.
I had no choice but to drain her mana to knock her out and lay her down on the sofa. But when she’d lunged at me earlier, her blouse had come undone just enough to reveal that soft, pale skin. Those pregnancy-swollen b**bs of hers, the cleavage… and if I looked just a little closer, the tips were almost visible.
Well, it’s not like we’re strangers—Marie and I have that kind of relationship. Even if she’s unconscious, it’s fine, right? So I gently slipped her underwear aside.
There was her areola, a bit darker than I expected. I hesitated for a moment… and then, pop—her dark n**ple sprung free.
It’s okay if I give it a little pinch, right?
”Mmh~”
It was already firm. Just the lightest touch, and even though she was out cold, a sound escaped her lips. That was fun, so I started working on the other side—when—
Knock knock.
Someone was at the professor’s office door.
Oh. Oh crap. I got carried away.
Crap. Professor Marie’s b**bs are—both of them are just out there!
I scrambled to pull her blouse closed.
”Professor, may I come in?”
I’d covered the b**bs, but I hadn’t had time to do up the buttons—it looked totally unnatural. Panicking, I rushed toward the door and absolutely blasted my shin against the corner of the table.
The doorknob turned.
I can’t let anyone in here right now. Hopping on one leg, I made a desperate dash for the door.
”I’m swamped right now—come back later—”
Marie’s voice boomed from behind me, practically a roar.
From the other side of the door, a woman’s voice: “Oh, my apologies.”
Wait.
I definitely knocked her out just a second ago.
No way—she woke up just from me pinching her n**ple?
No, no, no. That’s not a thing.
I turned around. Marie had propped herself up, b**bs fully out, and was glaring daggers at me.
”And just how do you plan on takin’ responsibility for this, then?” she demanded, her voice sharp with that familiar rustic edge.
Huh?
Responsibility? For pinching her n**ple?
”Marie, you’re pregnant, and I might have an STD.”
I thought I was making a perfectly reasonable point.
Marie stood up, grabbed the open front of her blouse with both hands, and yanked it apart with a flourish—buttons went flying everywhere.
”Now then. Hurry it up.”
Wait, hold on. “Now then. Hurry it up”—is that an order? A demand? While I was still reeling, she shrugged the blouse—buttons half gone—off her shoulders along with her underwear.
”Lock that door, why don’tcha.”
Her tone dropped low. Definitely an order.
”Uh, yeah. Right.”
Marie knows what’s going on. She’s not drunk anymore.
I don’t sense that person who knocked still out there, but what if they’re waiting? If they hear the lock click, that’s suspicious.
I turned the lever under the doorknob, slowly, carefully, without making a sound. If I hadn’t been concentrating, I wouldn’t have noticed the final click of the lock engaging. At least, I think so.
Probably fine.
I turned back around—and Marie was standing there, completely naked.
Uh. Okay.
She walked toward me.
”You heard what Darina said earlier, didn’t you?” she said, her voice softer now.
I’ve got syphilis, so we can’t do anything. That’s what I wanted to say, but the words wouldn’t come.
I grabbed her arms as she tried to throw them around me.
”I love Larry. I really do. But you…” she whispered, her voice cracking.
Wait, what?
Just from that skin contact, I could tell—Marie’s consciousness was flooded with sadness.
While I was still bewildered, she shook off my grip on her arms and clung to me.
”You always leave me behind,” she said, her voice raw and desperate.
She wasn’t yelling anymore. Just a quiet, tearful plea.
You fled from Barsheni Village in the snow. You vanished during the duel trial. Next thing I knew, you’d dragged me to the Academy. You disappeared during the Fifty-Third Defense Battle. When you went missing, you just showed up at the house at dawn, and then didn’t come back for almost two years. And then this time, you were gone for six months. And when you finally come back, you don’t even show your face—you go straight to Karl’s place, and you come back with some weird disease.
”You never, ever think about how I feel,” she sobbed.
With that cry, Marie’s voice broke entirely. She sank to the floor, still clinging to me. Dragged down with her, I sat on the floor too.
I couldn’t say a word. I just held her.
It’s autumn here. Still, being naked is a problem. I took off my jacket and draped it over her.
”Larry’s little weenie—” Marie suddenly cooed, her tone shifting completely.
Suddenly Marie’s consciousness clouded over again, and she blurted out something lewd—then grabbed me through my pants.
A moment ago she was crying her eyes out, and now she’s all smiles, leaning in for a kiss.
This is…
She must be drunk again from the overdose.
”Professor Marie, is everything alright?” came a voice from the other side of the door.
That crying earlier. It leaked through.
And Marie, right now, was working on the drawstring of my pants, slipping her hand in.
”Professor, please answer me,” the voice urged.
Bang bang bang—someone pounding on the door.
What do I do? And I’ve been on a dry spell this whole time—if she grips me and starts working—
”The key to this door—” I heard someone say from outside.
That voice. I’d heard it somewhere before.
If the lock gets picked, and they see me embracing a naked Marie—while her hand is inside my pants—
I try to pull her hand away. But she just keeps saying no, won’t listen.
Guess I have no choice but to knock her out again.
Click.
The sound of the lock disengaging. The door swung open—and the first person to step through was—
Assistant Professor Eida. Former assistant professor, I guess.
The moment she saw me, her voice shot up.
”Associate Professor Larry. I thought you were just incompetent at work—but no. You’re no different from Professor Pauman,” she snapped.
Talk about getting roasted.
Her husband is a finance bureaucrat. He’d been dispatched to help with the reconstruction of the Kingdom of Larland, and she’d quit the Academy to follow him.
Behind her, a whole crowd—students and research students from this classroom—poured in. They gave me looks like I was something filthy they’d scraped off their shoe, then they took the unconscious, naked Marie from me, wrapped her in a robe, and sheltered her.
”It’s okay now. Thank you kindly,” Marie said, her voice steady again.
She was already conscious again. I’d drained her mana thoroughly a moment ago.
After that, she didn’t relapse into intoxication at all.
Thanks to that, I got painted as some kind of monster. The students and research students kept their distance. Former Assistant Professor Eida lectured me endlessly. And then Karl showed up too. And the whole time—while I was going through this absolute misery in the Academy courtyard—the three observers from Louise’s faction watched the entire thing, thoroughly horrified.
”If those kids decide not to join my classroom, it’s your fault,” Karl declared flatly.
Why is this my fault? The one who put me through all this misery is Marie, right there!
Nobody wanted to hear it. Winter being cold, summer being hot—somehow, that was all my fault too.
Once Marie calmed down, Darina eventually took her home. Karl went back to the lab with them. But former Assistant Professor Eida wouldn’t let me go.
I got an earful about how I was no different from Professor Pauman—seeing women only as sexual outlets. But then the scolding shifted.
She started going on and on about how hard things had been after the Fifty-Third Defense Line.
Oh yeah? Well I was dealing with “Death Penalty” this and “Death Penalty” that!
”The real nightmare started when those ‘Seven Blueprints of the Prison’ arrived. Rosa, Tura, Katarina—they were all completely obsessed. They helped out with the classroom chores—only Professor Marie helped, you know?” Eida ranted.
Ah. Yeah, that tracks. Those three are free spirits—I don’t think they’d lend a hand to Assistant Professor Eida.
”Katarina—she might be a year older than me, but I outrank her! I’m the head of the classroom, but she won’t even give lectures! I asked her to manage the attendance ledger and she just gave me some vague ‘I don’t get it’ nonsense. She’s the oldest one in the classroom! Who does she think she is? On top of that, she got her design paper peer-reviewed, and then she just casually turned down a Meinshatt Magic School assistant professorship. ‘I’ll be an assistant professor here at the Academy instead,’ she says. What is that supposed to mean? And then, to top it all off, she says she’s going to Kuré to get married!” Eida ranted, her voice climbing with each grievance.
She must’ve been holding that in for a long time.
Yeah. That’s Katarina for you.
”But really—there’s no way that perverted woman could have a normal marriage anyway. I raised a toast when I heard she’d gotten divorced. Then, with nowhere to go, she got on some warship and sailed off somewhere. I pity whoever her superior officer is. That self-centered, uncooperative idiot whose only skill is piloting fixed-wing drones—he’s probably having a rough time,” she added with bitter satisfaction.
Yes. I’m that poor superior officer.
Though honestly, former Assistant Professor Eida might be just as twisted as Katarina. I don’t remember her being this bad before.
The Academy labs don’t have set closing hours. Sometimes they don’t close at all.
I send the students home, of course, but research students and above will sometimes stay overnight. I’d been rooming in the small neighboring lab with Pamela and Kenze, after all.
So I’d expected former Assistant Professor Eida’s lecture to drag on late into the night.
What saved me was that, well after dark, her husband got worried and came to pick her up.
He was better-looking than I expected—maybe too good for her.
”You’re Associate Professor Larry, I presume? I’ve heard a great deal about you,” he said warmly.
I figured it’d be something like “he’s useless at work” or “he botched an affair and ran out naked”—but then—
”About the Battle of Mustopae, and the defense of Trabius—Major Thomas told me all about it. I was working with him for a while in the Royal Capital of Larland on military reorganization. He’s formerly of the Royal Army, you know,” he said with a huge smile.
Wow. Never expected to hear that story here.
”So, Thomas—what’s he up to now?” I asked.
”After the reorganization was done, he returned to the Grand Principality,” he replied.
Ah. So he went back to that northern country.
Thinking about it—we’ve all started walking separate paths now. Kind of lonely.
”Speaking of which—I heard your child is due soon. Has your wife come back home yet?” he inquired.
Maria.
I told him she had her reasons and was still serving on a ship—though I think she’s at full term by now.
Not that I feel great about it. I mean, she initiated things, but I still slept with her.
”By the way, Assistant Professor Eida—former assistant professor, I should say—has something been going on? She seemed… different. Harsher than before,” I asked quietly, so she wouldn’t overhear.
”Ah…” he said, making a wry face.
”Did she cause you any trouble?” he asked.
Uh… yeah. A little. I said she’d been lecturing longer than usual.
”I apologize. It came out that I’d gotten involved with the maids while she was away,” he admitted with visible discomfort.
Wait—so today’s lecture was just splash damage from a marital dispute?
Originally, she was supposed to go with him when he went to Larland. But her work at the Academy wasn’t wrapped up, and the cleanup took time. In the meantime, he apparently got busy with the maids. Even after Eida arrived in Larland, the relationship with the maids continued, and she ended up walking in on them in the act—a complete disaster. Since then, they haven’t been able to repair things.
Seeing Professor Pauman and me, you’d think she’d realize it’s just that kind of thing and forgive him already.
Oh!
I suddenly realized my moral standards had quietly shifted to match this world’s.
When I think about it like that… Marie really puts up with a lot and does everything for me—both at work and in life.
Once I’m officially back for good, I should treat her right.
* * *
Early the next morning, we departed from the Academy before His Majesty the King set out on his condolence visit to the Celt Kingdom.
Even though it was early, Marie showed up with our daughter, Anjelica, and Manuela and her kid.
Pia and Katri’s daughters were still too newborn to bring, so I got wooden plaques with their names on them.
Pia Schubitz’s daughter, Heida.
Katri Orbó’s daughter, Marsha.
”Anjelica’s way more sociable than you, Marie, huh,” I said, cradling her.
In my arms, Anjelica—who barely even knows her father—was giggling and squealing with delight.
”None of your business, that is,” Marie shot back, but her voice had a playful edge.
She shot back with her usual bite, but when I kissed her on the cheek, she looked almost pleased. I kissed the gloomy-faced Manuela too, but she didn’t react—just blank as ever. Her son Volker had the same black hair as his mother. He couldn’t have been more than six months old, but his tiny toy-like fingers wrapped around mine.
”Ready yet?” Karl’s merciless voice urged us on.
”Marie—go easy on those decoctions, alright?” I said.
I figured I’d at least warn her. She said she knew.
”Take care of things while I’m gone,” I said, climbing into the carriage.
And Marie flipped me off. Middle finger.
The universal sign, apparently.
Well, her eyes were smiling—so that was her way of joking.
The send-off wasn’t just my family. Darina and others were there, and I even saw the Academy President for the first time in a while, along with some other professors.
That said, since His Majesty was departing the same day, there weren’t many people from the Kingdom Office to see us off.
We left the Academy and headed to the former headquarters of the 101st Golems Battalion, Thomasen across the Danube River. From there, we took a small boat loaded with two outboard motors to Besanburg, the territorial capital of Viscount Bizan.
In Besanburg, we picked up Vogt the old bastard and his clerk Mr. Lubellman. I received the customary three slaps from Nico—right on cue—then we entered the Inn River and stayed overnight at a military resort.
From there we took a new carriage and reached Seiren in two days, where we timed our wait for the Transfer Gate to open. Then we headed to the dwarf couple’s place.
The next morning, we entered the old mine shaft and waited in front of the gate. The framed plane rippled, and out came Elder Rocani-san.
”I never expected you to come so soon!” he exclaimed, genuinely moved.
We parted ways with the old bastard and the dwarf couple there, then sent everyone—looking thoroughly uncomfortable—through the Transfer Gate. We emerged on the first floor of Hub Tower.
”It’s freezing. Didn’t someone say to bring summer clothes?” a research student complained to Karl, her tone familiar.
That way of talking… was she his mistress?
”Hey, I heard it was way south—” Karl started.
Karl. When you cross the equator, the seasons reverse, you know.
Plus we’re at high altitude. Of course it’s cold.
Anyway.
I had successfully brought the Kingdom of Schweilitz’s Medical Magic Relief Corps to the capital of the Androgynos Group.

• Eida – A 28-year-old former Magic Academy Assistant Professor from Ulm Village with short dark brown hair. A mother of two now living in Larland with her husband, she maintains a sharp, lecturing manner and a tough-love approach. • Pauman – An arrogant, deceased Academy professor and former Magic Tool Lab head killed in the Haritz Rebellion. Often the target of Eida’s frustrations, she is known for being after Larry and refusing orders unless they involve a rescue.
• Rosa – A genius dwarf-human hybrid engineer and former student of Larry, this Naval Academy professor designed the Izumo and fought in the Fifty-Third Defense Battle. • Tura – An emotional Elf Mage over 20 with a child’s appearance, this Military Academy professor from a Kure mining family is obsessed with the Seven Blueprints of the Prison. Petite and telepathic, this scholarly mentor to the protagonist and Earnest acts as an affectionate, no-nonsense romantic partner to Larry. Whether offering unsentimental strategic assessments or assisting with rituals, she pairs old-fashioned warmth with a confident, authoritative presence.
• Kenze – Kenze is a muscular, brown-skinned Amazoness and former Takshurgan operative turned research student. A dragon-tattooed guardian and crew member, she rooms with Larry, whom she would prioritize over any mission.
