”She says it’s a toll. Money.”
The amount, in our currency, was ten kin of gold—or two hundred and fifty Schweilitz gold coins.
Unfortunately, the Izumo didn’t have that kind of cash on hand.
The balance I saw in Gida Department Head’s ledgers was around a hundred and twenty coins. Since we’d been away from the ship for a while, and she’d apparently spent some on living expenses and leisure, I figured we were under a hundred by now.
That money was supposed to be our travel fund for buying water and food. Gida was going to be stingy about handing it over, for sure.
The women from the Seeder Fleet went for about fifty to a hundred thousand Yen per person in Schweilitz’s market. That meant, at most, one gold coin each. Even if we sold all of them at that price, we’d barely get a hundred coins or so.
We still couldn’t afford the toll.
Thinking about it, buying Kenze for eleven hundred thousand Yen (a hundred and ten gold coins) was a real bargain. But even if someone offered me ten times that now, I wouldn’t give her up.
”Mr. Rocani, could you lend us some money?”
I asked the elderly Amazoness sitting next to me, who was acting as an interpreter.
She was an elder of the Land of the Fire Ring, the nation of the Androgynos Group.
Couldn’t you pull some strings?
”Did I not tell you? The Land of the Fire Ring has no money because of the Syphilis calamity. If we had any, we’d have paid the transport fees for our maidservants in advance.”

The Regent and Mr. Rocani went back and forth for a while.
Probably, in the tropical nation of the Dragon God, the concept of being snowed in was hard to grasp. They might not have even seen snow before.
”Could we pay later?”
When I asked, I was told the upfront payment was a show of good faith to judge our creditworthiness.
In other words, anyone who couldn’t pay ten kin wasn’t trustworthy.
Well, ten kin of gold was about twenty-five million Yen at Schweilitz’s exchange rate.
If we returned to the Royal Capital, that was an amount I, personally, could easily pay.
No choice. I told Fredys Squad Leader to go get Gida Department Head.
”What is it? If it’s about money, we don’t have any.”
She said that right off the bat, without changing her expression.
This was exactly why I hadn’t wanted to bring her along in the first place. But desperate times call for desperate measures.1
”How much did we get for the women from the Seeder Fleet?”
I asked, but she didn’t answer.
I explained that we needed the money to pass through the Nicaragua Canal.
Then—
”Gida Department Head, would you rather go through another storm like the Roaring Forties?”
When I threatened her just a little, she made a face, but finally admitted we had four kin of gold in our own currency.
Pretty much what I’d expected.
”And how much cash do you have on hand?”
”Eighty Schweilitz gold coins. That’s for buying water and food on the way back, you know.”
Yeah, I figured you’d say that.
”You have more hidden away, don’t you?”
”I do not.”
She said that and turned away, but there was no way this miser didn’t have a secret stash.
”There are the Mamekin, right? The ones you used to pay the port fees at Hodayn Port.”
Back then, they couldn’t use Schweilitz gold coins, so they paid with those fava-bean-sized nuggets of gold.
If I remember right, one Mamekin was worth three Turku gold coins.
”Yeah, yeah. There are forty-five Mamekin left.”
You don’t have to sound so resentful; it’s not even your money.
Since converting the exchange rate was a hassle, let’s say the value is the same as in Turku: that’s a hundred and thirty-five gold coins.
Add the earnings from the slave sales, and we get two hundred and thirty-five gold coins.
With just fifteen more, we might be able to manage with the cash on hand.
”Leakle, how much are we supposed to be paid for transporting Ring Five this time?”
Mr. Rocani’s eyes went wide as she stared at me.
”Five kin for fifteen crates.”
”Then could you let us take three kin from that payment?”
I could hear the Androgynos Group member next to me grinding her teeth, but we were about to travel halfway around the planet. I wanted to keep as much cash on hand as possible.
”I’m not asking for it for free, you know. Once Schweilitz pays us, I’ll pay you back for sure. Call it an interest-free, pay-when-you-can loan.”
It was essentially the same thing Mr. Rocani had said, so I wasn’t trying to provoke her.
”Wait just a moment. Is it truly acceptable to do such a thing? You’ll make it impossible to summon the widow whose soul was flung into another world!”
Elder Rocani was holding Henrietta-san’s summoning hostage with that statement.
That pissed me off.
”Oh, so you use us for all you’re worth, but you can’t pay us because you have no money. Yet when I ask for a loan from someone who does have money, that’s also no good. And now you’re resorting to threats? If you want a war, I’m ready.”
I stood up as I said it, and Fredys Squad Leader followed suit.
The Land of the Fire Ring of the Androgynos Group had fragile infrastructure.
If I and a few of the Torpedo Department snuck into the capital and blew up the Hub Tower with dynamite, the country’s functionality would come to a halt.
”If you do that, the ‘Dragon God’s Country’—the main Amazoness homeland—bound by ancient covenant, won’t stay silent.”
I didn’t want to make enemies of the Amazoness, but if it came to it, so be it.
If I ran from here to the Izumo, guarding Gida Department Head with Fredys Squad Leader, and then used a suicide drone to destroy the Transfer Gate, the Amazoness wouldn’t dare send their ships into the sea where the Whale Eater lurks.
”Lord Larry, stop the theatrics.”
Huh? And who are you?
There had been two attendants standing behind the Regent. One of them said that to me in Schweilitz’s language.
At that, the stern-looking Regent immediately stood up from her chair and knelt before the attendant.
Could it be that the Queen had been hiding, watching me?
Until now, I hadn’t noticed because she’d been keeping her eyes downcast, but the gaze now fixed on me was a stunning heterochromia of yellow and blue.
Was she a Vampire Luminous?
No, she had no fangs, nor was she a person of translucent white skin. She was a tanned yellow-skinned woman, like a softball club senpai.
”Theatrics, you say?”
Rocani said it with a look of relief on her face.
That’s not what happened.
”Rocani, Elder of the Land of the Fire Ring. Have you not been discourteous to Lord Larry?”
No doubt about it—that was the distinctive speech of this country’s Queen.
”No, it’s just that due to the Syphilis calamity, the Land of the Fire Ring is impoverished and can’t pay—but wait, who are you to—”

The Regent roared at Rocani for using familiar language.
”I am Kai Zuno Miyako, the Hundred and First Queen of the Dragon God Country!”

Next to her, Mahaka was so shocked she couldn’t even bow, still sitting there with her mouth hanging open.
”Elder Rocani, you’re fortunate that Lord Larry didn’t truly lose his temper.”
The Queen said that, but I had been genuinely pissed off, you know.
”Let me be clear: If you treat those who have helped you with contempt, no matter how ancient the covenant, we will not aid you. You cannot have forgotten the events of eighty years ago.”
Eighty years ago—that would be during the last Syphilis calamity.
I don’t know what happened, but next to me, Rocani’s face had gone beet red.
”Lord Larry, your wife’s summoning is scheduled for tomorrow, I hear?”
”That’s what I’ve been told.”
Though I’d only just heard that myself; originally, it was supposed to be today.
”Elder Rocani, if that summoning were to fail, I will not forgive you. Do you understand?”
”Summoning is a gamble—it doesn’t always succeed—”
But she was cut off mid-sentence by the Queen’s “Do you understand?” and fell silent.
”Indeed. Regent Kanve. You shall depart at once with Elder Rocani to the Land of the Fire Ring and confer with the other elders regarding this matter.”
The Queen gave the Regent the order first in the Schweilitz language, then again in what was probably the local tongue.
The Regent, so commanded, rose from her kneeling position, gave a bow, and strode over to Rocani on long legs, grabbing her by the arm.
”Yes, Elder Rocani. You will hand over all profits from Ring Five and the maidservants to Lord Larry, and you will eventually be repaid.”
Rocani looked like she wanted to say something, but the arm trapped by the militant Regent’s grip seemed to hurt quite a bit. She was dragged off, Donadona-style, without being able to say a word.
”Oh my, Lord Larry. Is something displeasing you?”
Had the Queen read my expression? Her heterochromatic eyes were fixed on me as she asked.
”No, I managed to borrow the money, and Mr. Rocani’s situation seems to have been resolved. I have no complaints.”
But I hesitated for a moment about whether I should say something.
”What is it? Speak your mind.”
”The theatrics weren’t theatrics. I really was about to start a war.”
I was referring to what the Queen said when she revealed herself: “Lord Larry, stop the theatrics.”
”Ah, that. Forgive me. If Elder Rocani had taken the bait from your provocation, you would have been serious about crushing the Land of the Fire Ring. That would have been a problem for my country.”
So by calling it “theatrics,” she had prevented Rocani from taking the bait?

The Queen said this, then introduced the male bride who had been standing behind the Regent with her, playing the role of attendant.

”Hmm? I heard that Lord Larry was reincarnated from a country in another world called Japan.”
”That’s correct.”
I felt like I could guess where this was going.
”Then do you not know the meaning of the phrase, ‘The moon is beautiful, isn’t it’? It means ‘I love you,’ you know.”
”I know that. But that’s normally a guy’s line.”
The Queen looked genuinely puzzled when she heard that.
