Volume 4 Chapter 22 Mannequin

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Weeks passed after the festival. School, training, and preparations blurred into one relentless rhythm. Before I knew it, the leaves had fallen and the air had turned cold.

It was the latter half of November.

Before the final exam period began, our group reached the 20th Floor.

The 20th Floor, the final level of the Shallow Area, has a structure unlike everything we’d seen up to the 19th, likely because it is a dedicated boss room. Once we left the starting “Back alley,” we were met with an arcade path wider than any corridor before it, leading forward without a single branching road.

Along the way, a mandatory fight happens—once with a roaming-type Aberration, and once with a stationary-type in the plaza. After winning these battles and pushing further, we arrived at the deepest part of the “Commercial District.”

From the 16th Floor onward, new Aberrations were added to both roaming and stationary types. The Sewer Crocodile and the Stubborn Store Owner. Both appear alone, but their stats are levels above the other weak Aberrations. While they are strong alone, the fight starts with a 6-on-1 numbers advantage, so any group that can reach the 15th floor can handle them calmly without risk of losing.

On the 20th Floor, these new Aberrations always appear, and for the first time, they work together with other Aberrations to attack us. Having strong single enemies mixed into a multi-target fight is quite troublesome. One moment of carelessness and you will find yourself making a deadly mistake.

If you do not buff the boss, these two encounters are basically the final battles of the “Commercial District.” Beating them forces the sorcerers to burn a fair amount of Mana and stamina.

After finishing the battles, we arrived at a huge shop.

Decades ago, it must have sold the latest fashions. The outside was soaked in a retro look, bringing up that kind of image. Before breaking in, we stopped to double-check everyone’s gear and make sure we all understood the boss-fighting plan.

After a short talk, Yurina, our vanguard, pushed open the huge doors and we stepped into a space so vast you could believe it if someone called it a gym.

The ceiling was as high as a gym, too. The area was way bigger than any plaza we had seen so far. Empty iron pipe racks were lined up along all four walls. In a normal clothing store, these racks would be packed with clothes, but right now, not a single piece of clothing hung on them.

Up to this point, everything matched the official data and Koki-san’s intel.

In the center sat a single Torso.

Normally, that Torso would just start moving on its own. It is a pathetic “boss” that can only ram into you at the speed of a dodgeball—barely worthy of being called the opening act for this floor.

But the boss we were about to fight was a different breed.

Information from Komoda-kun, the presence sensed by Hinoki, and the intel gained from the four previous Unique Variants. We had made countermeasures based on the signs suggested by all that. Now, we were going to put those measures into action with everything we had.

The battle trigger is for all group members to step into the area around the Torso.

I confirmed everyone was in position, then stepped in last.

The Torso, which had been under the gaze of everyone, began to rattle.

As it lifted and floated from its pedestal, the four metal fragments I carried flew from my palm toward the Torso.

Each fragment stuck to where limbs should be, growing in size in the blink of an eye.

The Torso gained its limbs, became a headless mannequin, and stood firmly upright on the floor.

Hands and feet made of a strange, shiny metal-like material. The torso looked the same as the original, so I guessed it was Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Well, since it is an Aberration, I cannot judge its toughness just by looks, but it is unlikely to have strange properties. It would be worth trying fire-based sorcery.

Alright, start the battle… or so I thought, but the mannequin’s movements were off.

 Its limb movements were jerky.

 Is that…?

It was not the movement of a badly built robot like a Wood Golem, nor was it too human-like, as with an Anatomical Model. If I had to compare it to anything, it was like someone who had been in bed for years, just starting to move their body during rehab.

’Aye, that Aberration looks like it still can’t move its limbs well, mate. If you’re gonna hit it, now’s the time,’ Hinoki said.

If what Hinoki told me was true, I had no reason to hold back. In fact, it was the perfect chance.

 ”Engage!” I shouted.

Following my order, the two Vanguards attacked.

The mannequin caught the sword and Kanabo (a heavy club) coming from the left and right with one arm each.

A dull thud echoed. Defensive Sorcery appeared where they made contact. Through the effects of its left leg and left arm, a stronger Defensive sorcery had been set up.

The first strikes from Yurina and Mitsuki were their strongest normal attacks. The fact that it blocked them meant the Vanguards’ normal attacks could not get through the mannequin’s Defensive sorcery. The challenge had just gotten bigger. I raised my threat level for it.

Mitsuki, having had his attack blocked, pulled back, and Yurina stepped forward.

With a grinding, awkward movement, the mannequin swiped at Yurina. A wall of crystal caught its fist.

It made a cracking sound, but the wall held. Yurina then triggered her Inherent Sorcery.

 ”!! “

The sword, wrapped in Severing Sorcery, cut through the mannequin’s Defensive sorcery.

The blade made direct contact with the left arm, leaving a cut. No blood flowed. The mannequin made a gesture as if it was worried about its cut arm.

At this timing, the mannequin stopped.

Yurina pulled back, and Risa raised her magic pistol.

The grenade unit was attached to her usual assault rifle. A heat round was fired from it, hitting the mannequin dead-on the moment it started to move again. The mannequin was wrapped in flames for an instant, but the fire was quickly spread out.

The heat from the heat round does not vanish in a short time. It is safe to guess it was weakened by the mannequin.

’So far, so good, yeah,’ Hinoki added.

Just as Hinoki said, I had imagined it would play out exactly like this.

The information from Komoda-kun was vital in helping me figure out the strength of the mannequin’s Defensive sorcery.

Komoda-kun had originally planned to fight a Torso with only a left arm added, but he ended up fighting a Torso with yet another part made stronger. His reason was that he heard our group was planning to fight a multi-part strengthened Torso, and he wanted to challenge himself too.

The truth of it, I do not know. Maybe it was the rival spirit of not wanting to lose to me. Or, since I might have felt bad if the boss he called a “trash mob” beat me, he could have been trying to help by getting me the info ahead of time. Either way, the information he brought was huge.

The parts he added were the left arm and right leg. He fought a Torso that used stronger Defensive sorcery.

By hitting the Torso again and again, which protected itself with crazy hard Defensive sorcery—long enough to make one lose their mind—his group beat the boss. During that clear, he noticed one fact.

The mannequin was likely targeting me.

If everyone stays at a distance, it uses movement sorcery to fly right in front of me in an instant. But as long as even one person is attacking it up close, it will not use that movement sorcery.

Yurina and Mitsuki took turns pressing the attack.

Naturally, the mannequin fought back. It was Asari and Chifumi’s job to guard.

Asari was mainly in charge of blocking the right arm’s strikes, while Chifumi handled the sorcery attacks.

There was no info on what kind of sorcery attacks the mannequin would use.

I based my idea on the location of the boss fight. If it were an electronics store, maybe, but a clothing store made fire/heat sorcery seem unlikely. Impact sorcery felt hard to imagine, too. By process of elimination, I settled on water/ice—or, assuming the shop still had power, lightning.

What the mannequin let out from both arms, though, was different from my first guesses: spears of fire and earth. Chifumi’s water and ice blocked them. Well, not everything goes exactly to plan. The elements were manageable, so it was not a problem.

We wore down the mannequin with heat rounds and the two Vanguards’ attacks.

The mannequin’s movements slowly became smoother.

The unnatural, jerky motions from earlier were gone. It was a smooth movement, like fighting someone who had no head.

The times it dodged or blocked our attacks increased. We were right to rush it.

This is where it gets real.

The mannequin, like the Unique Variants before it, repeated a “stop-and-go” pattern. I would use this timing.

During my first fight with a Unique Variant, I struggled, but eventually realized that my attacks would not work on a still Aberration, and that they would only hit when it was moving. Because I understood how to deal with it, I never bothered to figure out why it kept stopping and starting, or the logic behind it. I won without needing the answer.

At our planning meeting before the boss fight, Yurina had whispered that very question, and it was Komoda-kun who had solved it.

Komoda-kun, having fought the super hard Torso for a long time, had found the rule of its stops and starts.

 It was “blinking.”

It seems Komoda-kun also felt that uncomfortable feeling of being constantly watched by the boss. While fighting that long battle, he happened to get some dust in his eye and blinked a few times. The boss’s movements during those blinks were clearly strange. “Could it be!?” he thought, tested it, and found he was right.

Every time the group leader blinks, the boss’s “move/stop” state flips.

’Aye, even considerin’ the Binding Vow of “I will never move,” that hardness was properly abnormal, mate. It added another Binding Vow, “The enemy chooses the timing,” and by attachin’ two ridiculous conditions, it reached true invincibility,’ Komoda-kun had explained.

Once the trick is revealed, the fear is cut in half.

 The goal is in sight.

When the mannequin tries to attack, I blink to stop it. I release the stop just before Risa’s heat round hits. I line up my blinking with everyone’s attack timing to wear down the mannequin’s health.

After the dozen-something-th direct hit from a heat round, the mannequin’s stance fell apart.

Its left leg gave out, and it dropped to one knee.

 Did we get it!?

’Not yet, mate! It’s just startin’!’ Hinoki warned.

The mannequin’s form began to change.

The metal melted, turning the mannequin into a single, large sphere. From there, limbs grew out.

 ”A face…” Chifumi whispered.

Unlike the previous mannequin, this one had a head in addition to its four limbs.

The face was a blank, featureless slate, yet it had faint dips and bumps where eyes and a nose would be.

The air in the room changed, and countless clothes appeared on the hangers along the walls.

The mannequin spread its arms wide, and the naked mannequin was suddenly dressed.

’Looks like it’s gone berserk, mate,’ Hinoki noted.

In the next instant, a jolt shook my skull.

I dived sideways on instinct, and almost at the same time, the mannequin swung its hand down like a blade into the spot where I had been standing.

I blinked again and again. …It would not stop.

No matter how many times it happened. The mannequin showed no sign of stopping its movements.

”There’s no stoppin’ this guy now! From here on out, it’s a full-on fight!” Mitsuki shouted, her voice sharp and urgent.

It was a six-on-one battle, with each member doing their jobs as Vanguard, Mid-guard, and Rearguard.

As the leader, I judged this to be the moment to use our trump card.

 ”Everyone, I’m countin’ on y’all!” I commanded.

While watchin’ the mannequin trade blows with Mitsuki, whose whole body was wrapped in black, I activated my Inherent Sorcery.

 Tatemiya—Netherworld Gallery.

The range was the whole store. Honestly, it was huge. Even considerin’ I had been savin’ Mana, with my current reserves, I could only keep it up for about three minutes.

”That’s plenty!” Hinoki chirped, their tone full of excited energy.

The mannequin, hatin’ the close-range fight on the ground where it had to face two Vanguards at once, launched itself into the air. Apparently, it could fly. Hinoki, havin’ come out of the ceiling right into the mannequin’s blind spot, latched onto it. Now bigger than a giant crocodile, Hinoki clamped its jaws around the mannequin, usin’ all its weight and the force of the fall to slam it into the floor.

Hinoki’s attack snapped the mannequin’s neck, makin’ its clothes vanish. Also, the mannequin began to melt, just like plastic tossed into a fire.

After gettin’ out of Hinoki’s jaws in liquid form, it took on a human shape again at a distance. It was wearin’ a different outfit than before. At the same time, all the clothes vanished from one of the hanger racks lined up against the wall.

With a low, buzzin’ drone, a light was shot onto the chest of the revived mannequin.

It was the magic pistol held by Risa. A heat-ray gun borrowed from Inatomi-san. It was not a Magic Bullet, but a custom-made gun that could fire a steady laser-like beam of destructive light for several seconds. It was a spare weapon we brought along to make sure we could deal damage even if our stop-and-go timin’ was a bit off.

The Mana use per shot was high, but the power was guaranteed. A weapon swap for a short decisive battle. The laser burned away the clothes on its chest, and the mannequin protected itself with both hands. The laser was deflected by Defensive sorcery.

This was also within our plans. Choosin’ to guard instead of dodge was its downfall. While it was distracted by the heat ray, Yurina came down from behind the mannequin, swingin’ her blade with full-power Severing Sorcery.

The blade went in at the mannequin’s right shoulder, passed through the heart area, and came out from the left side. A clean diagonal slash landed, cuttin’ the body—and the clothes with it—in two. The upper body hit the floor with a thud, melted into a sphere, and joined with the lower body, which had also turned into a sphere. It then made distance again and took a human form wearin’ new clothes.

Clothes vanished from another hanger rack.

”Every time we do a fatal hit, it just changes clothes and comes back~. That leaves two racks left. Which means~” Chifumi mused, her voice light and analytical.

”That means we just have to beat the crap out of it three more times!” Mitsuki added with a grin.

The mannequin barely dodged Chifumi’s torrent, Mitsuki’s swingin’ Kanabo, and Hinoki’s charge, hittin’ Hinoki with a flame-wrapped fist.

 ”Guh!” Hinoki gasped.

Hinoki rippled its bellows-like body to spread out the impact, hittin’ back with its jaws. When the mannequin dodged the counter and gained distance, Yurina slashed at it. A lump of Mana with a shiny metal look appeared to protect the mannequin, blockin’ the Severing Sorcery.

The lump of Mana pushed back Yurina’s sword, but just as it was about to blow her away, Asari’s Defensive sorcery activated. The crystal wall blocked the Mana lump, makin’ a scratchin’, scrapin’ sound.

From behind the mannequin, Mitsuki’s Kanabo swing came again. This time, Risa fired a Magic Bullet with her usual Rifle in the direction the mannequin would likely dodge. The mannequin chose to avoid the Kanabo strike only to take the Magic Bullet, hittin’ it square on. I blew the mannequin, its stance now broken, away with a shockwave.

”Two more times.” I said calmly.

 ”Let’s do it~!” Chifumi cheered.

The crushed, scattered fragments turned into countless tiny spheres. Gathered in mid-air, the spheres grew back into a mannequin wearin’ new clothes.

Although its face was blank, you could read feelings of irritation and impatience on it.

Seein’ that bein’ surrounded on the ground was a problem, the mannequin stayed in the air. A whirlwind of flames, sand, and lightning burst around it. That heat—it was a boosted area-of-effect sorcery.

It was usin’ three elements—fire, earth, and lightning—at the same time? How were we supposed to guard against that…

”Chifumi, block the fire. Asari, block the sand.” I commanded.

 ”Understood.” Chifumi replied.

 ”Yes!” Asari added.

A crystal wall rose up to cover everyone. A few seconds later, the three-element destructive energy raged through the store like a tornado.

Chifumi’s ice blocked the flames, which held the heat of a high-temperature incinerator, and Asari’s Crystal Wall fended off the sand’s wearing away. As for the lightning, I handled it with my Aberration.

Comin’ out halfway from the shadows was the catfish Aberration, Kaname. This was an Aberration linked to the ancient earth. It canceled out lightning strikes, no matter how strong. For the Aberrations I had, which came from water life, lightning sorcery was a natural enemy. Kaname, though, was the enemy of those enemies. All the lightning was pulled into Kaname, which had used its Ability as a lightning rod.

The fire vanished. As the mannequin in the air started gettin’ its next sorcery attack ready, multiple water spheres appeared around it, joined by pillars of water. The mannequin was trapped in a water prison. A capture sorcery by Chifumi.

The mannequin tried to escape right away, but its actions were slowed by Magic Bullets flyin’ through the gaps. Even then, as it tried to slip through a gap in the water prison, it slammed into a crystal wall that had appeared there. The next moment, the water prison filled up and slowly began to freeze.

 ”!! “

 ”Yo! Ho! Hah!” Yurina yelled.

Yurina, usin’ Hinoki as a step to jump into the air, sliced off the mannequin’s left arm.

Meanwhile, crystal pillars appeared one after another at Mitsuki’s feet, and she ran through the air usin’ the crystals as platforms. She reached the floatin’ ice and smashed the frozen mannequin—along with the block of ice—with her Kanabo, before landin’.

The mannequin grew back from the fragments scattered on the ground. It stood still on the ground.

There were no clothes left on the surroundin’ hanger racks. I had a feeling that beatin’ the mannequin in this state would mean real victory.

”What is it…?” Hinoki asked, their voice tinged with confusion.

 Was somethin’ botherin’ them?

”It says it wants a one-on-one with you, big brother.” Hinoki translated.

”Who… well, that much is obvious, right? It’s that mannequin.” I said.

”Yeah… I don’t really have any duty to grant its wish, though.” Hinoki noted.

As Hinoki said, there was no need to take up such an offer.

Because I was keepin’ up my Inherent Sorcery, my Mana was about to run out. It would be easiest and most sure to just gang up on it. But…

 ”Fine.” I agreed.

 ”Big brother!?” Hinoki exclaimed.

”However, if I win, you’ll become my servant. Tell it that.” I instructed.

 ”………It says okay.” Hinoki relayed.

 ”Good.” I said.

There was no special meanin’ in acceptin’ the challenge. I had a thought that if I could subdue that Aberration, it would become a fightin’ force. But at the core, it was just my gut feelin’—my impression—that I should go head-to-head with it. That was all.

I told Chifumi and the others not to interfere and moved near the mannequin.

One step outside of sword-strikin’ distance.

When I took my stance, the mannequin took the same one. Our line of sight was the same. In terms of build, it was almost the same as me.

 ”!!!!!”

 ”……!”

We lunged at the same time.

Like a mirror image, fist clashed with fist.

I did not use the power of the Aberrations. I fought only with my own strengthenin’ sorcery and physical combat skills. A zero-distance brawl with the mannequin.

 My breathin’ slowly became rough.

While I needed oxygen, my opponent was an Aberration. Of course, our stamina was different. But, I realized the reason why this Aberration wanted a one-on-one.

Concentratin’, I barely dodged a straight punch from the mannequin’s combo, and in return, I hit its tanden (the point just below the navel) with a right spear-hand thrust.

As I had felt, I grabbed the strange object located there and pulled it out.

In my right hand was a blue stone.

There was no doubt about it; it was a fragment of Hinoki’s power.

 ”Big brother!?” Hinoki cried out.

”Was this what you wanted me to take?” I asked.

The presence I felt from the mannequin was different from before.

The faceless mannequin, which had stopped movin’ with a gapin’ hole in its stomach, seemed to nod.

Right after, with a clatter, the mannequin fell apart into fine pieces and scattered across the floor.

 ”Is it over…?” Chifumi asked.

I nodded to Chifumi as she came closer, tellin’ her that I had won and had successfully exorcised the mannequin.

”W-wait, Minoru, look there!” Risa pointed.

Where Risa was pointin’, the fragments of the mannequin were rattlin’ and movin’, and a small doll crawled out from under them. It was a simple doll, about 20 centimeters tall, the kind used for settin’ up drawin’ poses.

It walked across the fragments and came to a stop in front of me.

”……Lookin’ forward to workin’ with you from here on out.” the doll said.

”Likewise, I’m countin’ on you.” I replied.

I pinched the hand it offered with my fingertips.

The doll vanished into my shadow.

”Does that mean you were able to subdue that mannequin?” Chifumi asked.

”Yeah. Somehow, I managed it.” I confirmed.

That was when I ran out of Mana.

My Inherent Sorcery was released, and the strength left my knees.

”Hey~ hang in there~~!” Chifumi and Mitsuki worried.

I collapsed, held up by Chifumi and Mitsuki. Even if I refilled my Mana right away usin’ the Majo’s Tears held by Risa, the feelin’ of not wantin’ to move could not be wiped away so fast. With the feelin’ of Chifumi’s thigh against the back of my head, it took some time before I finally got the energy to stand up.

I stood up and looked around; by beatin’ the mannequin, the store’s back exit had appeared. When we stepped out through the door, we were already on the 21st Floor. Beyond the back alley, I could see the arcade shoppin’ street as the sun set. Whereas up to the 20th Floor it was daytime, from here on it was evenin’ and beyond.

The 21st Floor and below of the dungeon’s shallow “Commercial District” led to the middle-layer “Entertainment Street,” and deeper down, to the deep-layer “Dark Street.”

The 40th Floor held the boss of the “Entertainment Street.”

It was a dungeon we could not clear with our current strength. Quietly, we escaped from the “Commercial District.”

 Summary:

The group initiates a high-stakes boss battle against a Unique Variant Mannequin in the Commercial District. By exploiting the mechanics of the “blinking” trigger discovered by Komoda, they systematically whittle down the boss’s defensive capabilities. The battle takes a dangerous turn as the boss undergoes a transformation, growing a face and donning clothing, signaling a “runaway” state.

Minoru and his team engage a persistent mannequin enemy in a multi-stage dungeon battle, ultimately defeating it through tactical coordination and a final one-on-one duel. After extracting a fragment of Hinoki’s power, Minoru subdues the mannequin, which transforms into a small doll and joins his shadow. The team then exits the Commercial District, noting the transition to the deeper, more dangerous levels of the dungeon.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The 20th floor is the final layer of the Shallow Area, which accounts for its unique structural design.

 - The boss’s “stop-and-go” movement is directly tied to the leader’s blink frequency, a detail uncovered by Komoda-kun.

 - The mannequin’s “invincibility” is powered by two overlapping Binding Vows.

 - The boss fight takes place in a large, gym-like clothing store where the racks were initially empty.

 - The mannequin regenerates every time its clothes vanish, indicating the clothes are tied to its core life-force/form.

 - Minoru’s Inherent sorcery, “Tatemiya – Netherworld Gallery,” is powerful but has a strict three-minute limit based on his current Mana.

 - Kaname, the catfish Aberration, serves as a specific counter-tactic to lightning sorcery, despite the team’s general weakness to it.

 - The 21st floor marks a environmental shift in the dungeon from “daytime” to “evening,” signaling a transition between layers.

 - The defeated mannequin doll joining Minoru’s shadow suggests it has become a new, controllable asset for the party.
