Volume 5 Chapter 10 Day Two: Snow Mountain Leisure

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

First morning in the 5th District. I enjoyed a bath early.

Last night, Manaka had asked me to “guide” two new members who joined her group. I had performed a Second-Push on one of them, Sanuki Megumi.

”Break-Lock” was approved by Manaka. To be honest, I planned to destroy the lock at first. But because of personal feelings, I did the Second-Push through “Break-Seal”1 instead of a full “Break-Lock.”

”Tatemiya-kun, is there anywhere that itches?” Megumi asked, her voice soft.

 ”I am fine,” I replied.

As you can tell, Megumi was in the bath with me. Right now, she was washing my back.

Megumi had fainted during the Second-Push last night. She woke up around the time I finished a fight with Chifumi.

After that, when Megumi tried to go to the bath, I told her to just sleep in the bed. Chifumi respected what I wanted — she said it was only for the first day — and went back to her own room.

So Megumi and I fell asleep naked in the futon, and woke up to bathe together this morning. The rule about not seeing her bare face had been lifted after last night.

Since waking, Megumi had treated me completely differently than before. Blushing bright red and acting shy, she had been devotedly serving me.

But she still called me “Tatemiya-kun” formally. I told her “Minoru” was fine, but she refused, saying that in her position she could not do that.

As a member of the Manaka group, showing signs of flirting with a Tsuyo-Osu from another group would look bad. She was the type who separated feelings from actions clearly.

After washing, we soaked in the tub side by side in comfortable silence.

”Um… Tatemiya-kun,” Megumi said, her voice shaking slightly.

 ”Hm?”

 ”I was… Break-Locked, right?”

”Do not worry. I performed the Second-Push properly and attached my own key, so it is not wide open. As proof — who is the man Megumi likes most right now? Answer honestly.”

”…! …Tatemiya-kun… is…♡” she whispered, her face burning.

”See? You cannot lie to my questions.”

 ”…Geez!” she pouted.

I could not help grinning at her pout.

 ”Laughing… that’s mean!” she said.

 ”Sorry, sorry,” I apologized.

After we both laughed, I pulled her closer and brought our faces together.

”Seriously, I think I will question you with Manaka today or tomorrow.”

”Yes. I will prove our innocence there,” she said, her eyes steady.

Her words were full of resolve. Since we were at it, I asked something I had been curious about.

 ”Do you hate me, Megumi?”

”Honestly, half a year ago, I did. I wondered why you did not choose me. But now it is different — I am a sorcerer too. Once I calmed down, I understood the situation and the choices you made back then.”

Her eyes were completely serious. This answer was no lie.

”But… I will never forgive whoever shamed us.”

 ”I will help with that.”

”Thank you… very much,” she said with a graceful nod.

”…Should we get out soon? Everyone will wake up.”

 ”Yes,” she agreed.

We left the bath and returned to our own rooms.

Before I could catch my breath, I heard Megumi heading toward the living room. She was probably making breakfast as the lowest-ranking member.

I lay back down on the bed.

*Thump, thump.* The sound of knocking on the door woke me up.

”Minoru, are you up? I am coming in!” Risa called from outside.

Risa’s voice — she was back? I looked at the clock by my pillow. Ten minutes before the meeting.

 ”Crap!”

”Morning, Minoru — wait, what is with that look! You are not ready at all!” she said, throwing open the door.

”I overslept! Give me a second, I will be ready right away.”

 ”Everyone is waiting. Hurry up.”

Risa left with an annoyed face. This is bad.

I changed clothes and shoved the necessary things into my pockets, managing to leave the room just in time for the meeting.

 ”Ah, you are here.”

 ”Good morning, Minoru-sama,” Yurina said.

 ”Morning, Risa, Yurina.”

”Big sister is waiting. Let us go,” Risa said.

I greeted the two waiting in front of the room, apologized, and went into the living room.

”Good morning. Sorry I am late,” I said.

Anri-san had already started giving instructions. Through the window, I saw Yuu and the others trying to board the bus parked in front of the cottage. Chifumi, Manaka, and Mitsuki, who had stayed behind, all looked at me.

”Mornin’~ we were just about to leave you behind~” Chifumi said.

”Minoru, good morning. I am glad you made it,” Manaka added softly.

”Is being late punishable by a fine?” Mitsuki asked, her eyes lighting up.

Mitsuki began chanting “Money, money.” She was in a good mood from the start of the morning. Given today’s schedule, it was better to keep her happy. I decided to tease her as usual.

”It is within one minute. I am innocent during the grace period. That is common sense.”

”I have never heard of such common sense. Late is late,” Mitsuki said.

”It is a rule for the group that I made. You are my Majo. Follow the rules. Checkmate.”

”That logic might work if it were just us, but Manaka-chan is here this time~ So Manaka-chan decides Minoru’s punishment~” Chifumi said with a grin.

 ”Guh…”

Chifumi had beaten me with clear logic. I was speechless. I checked Manaka’s expression. She did not seem angry, but…

”It looks like you worked hard until late last night. I asked you to ‘guide’ them, so that’s partly my fault. Let’s let it go this time,” Manaka said.

”If Manaka says so, I won’t complain,” Mitsuki shrugged.

”That’s good, isn’t it~? You should be grateful to your kind childhood friend~” Chifumi teased.

”A leader from another group is more understanding than my own Majo,” I muttered, half-joking.

Chifumi and Mitsuki ignored my sarcasm. Any further arguing would be pointless. I headed to the entrance with the three of them.

”Come to think of it, where are Risa-chan and Yurina-chan~?” Chifumi said.

 ”Hm… they were here a minute ago…”

I thought they weren’t in the hallway or living room, then the two came from the kitchen.

”We put drinks in the thermos. Hot tea and coffee. Want some later?” Risa said.

”I also brought rice balls for Minoru-sama,” Yurina said.

 ”Good work,” I replied.

Everyone besides me had eaten a light breakfast. Was it extra? Had they been saving it for me? I praised the two for packing the rice balls in an easy-to-carry format, then went outside.

I greeted Anri-san and boarded the microbus. A hotel employee was driving, and we trusted the transfer to the ski resort to the experienced shuttle bus driver.

There were also girls I did not recognize — Anri-san’s group members, who would help guide us today. Much appreciated. I did introductions and greetings on the bus.

Biting into the rice balls Yurina had given me and sipping hot tea, we headed to the ski resort.

Even before the lifts started moving, the slopes were already crowded. Anri-san had obtained the lift tickets in advance, so we skipped the long line and headed to the gear rental counter.

”Look at that. Super cute~☆” one of the girls exclaimed.

”I like the one next to it,” another said.

Yui and the others were renting gear in flashy colors. The resort clearly had a broad enough selection to suit their particular tastes. As long as the colors were bright and easy to spot, that was fine.

At the slopes, we joined Anri-san’s group, who had finished their preparations a step ahead. They would teach us in small groups, so we split up and began training.

Risa, Yurina, and I were in the class led by Anri-san. Risa had experience and could ski reasonably well, so the two of them ended up teaching me — a complete beginner — along with Yurina.

As I was slowly making my way down a gentle slope with Risa guiding my hand, I noticed a burly engineer talking with Anri-san. They spoke for a while with serious expressions before the engineer bowed slightly in our direction and walked away.

When Anri-san came over, Risa asked right away.

 ”What? Work?”

 ”Something like that,” Anri-san said.

”That person is a sorcerer, right?” Risa said.

”Yes. Ogura-san. He works at the hotel.”

 ”Hmm…”

Risa watched the engineer’s retreating back with a cold look. She probably saw him as a bad man who was unkind to her sister. Anri-san noticed Risa’s reaction, gave a wry smile, and explained.

”He is a good person. He manages the dungeon now and will be my boss when I get a job. Very thoughtful and helpful.”

 ”Oh~”

”He is also a master at picking wild plants. Many of the wild plants used in the hotel’s cooking are collected by Ogura-san.”

 ”Hmm… is that so…”

Risa’s expression softened slightly. I had been following the engineer with my eyes, but there was a group talking to him. Wait — that was…

”Is that not Shoji-kun’s group?” I whispered.

”Eh? No way? …Really. What a huge coincidence!” Risa said.

Shoji-kun, who had exchanged a few words, looked at me, Risa, and Yurina, who were staring at them, with a confused face. Then, a few seconds later, he recognized us and his face filled with surprise.

Shoji-kun left the engineer and came over as if sliding on the snow. As expected of someone raised in the 5th District, his movement on snow is way ahead of ours.

”We meet again. This is too perfect to be a coincidence,” Shoji-kun said.

”I am surprised too. To think we would meet in a place like this…”

”This place is a good distance from town for a day trip, and the snow quality is excellent. That is why it is so crowded. Are the other members here too?”

”Yes. The whole group is here. The other members are around that way.”

I pointed where Mitsuki and Asari were being taught to ski. Shoji-kun seemed to notice too.

”Leisure with the whole group. Just like us.”

 ”Shoji-kun, why are you here?”

”A distant relative works at this resort. I come here often.”

”I see… by any chance, the person you were talking to earlier?”

 ”Yes.”

Shoji-kun’s group members were waiting behind him. I shouldn’t take too much of their time.

I cut the conversation short, agreed that we would both be here until evening, and parted ways.

 Watching Shoji-kun leave, I thought.

That middle-aged man was Shoji-kun’s distant relative, now serving as the dungeon manager. According to what Risa had told me yesterday, the sorcerer who managed the dungeon came from Risa’s mother’s birth family, the Naruse line.

Did that mean Risa and Shoji-kun were distantly related?

”I have never heard of it… but that would be the case, wouldn’t it,” Risa said.

Fate worked in strange ways. When things reached this point, I could not help but feel that his transfer to District 13 High School must have meant something. Could some power related to the Naruse family estate have been at work? No — judging from Risa’s mother’s demeanor, she did not seem to know anything. Perhaps I was overthinking it.

While Risa and I talked, Yurina kept training under Anri-san’s guidance, improving steadily. As a leader, I could not afford to be outdone.

By morning, she had tried the beginner course enough times to descend slowly without assistance.

At lunch, we all went to the canteen for curry.2 Everyone said they were getting the hang of skiing. The Vanguard group, especially, was picking it up fast.

In the afternoon, the members split into small groups based on their skill level and preferences, and decided to enjoy the mountain as they pleased.

Now then, what should I do?

The first place I went was where Risa and Yurina were. Risa, who could already ski reasonably well, and Yurina, who had caught on during the morning training, were about to leave with Anri-san for the intermediate course.

”Minoru, are you coming with us?”

”I am still fine on the beginner course.”

”Ehh? That is such a waste.”

”There are multiple beginner courses. I am going to try skiing in different places.”

It was a surprisingly large ski resort. Even after taking the lifts higher up, there were other beginner courses. Anri-san agreed with my decision.

”Being careful is fine. There is no need to push yourself.”

”I will go once I am more confident in my skiing. Risa, check the course conditions. Think of it as a preview of an easy intermediate course.”

 ”Got it,” Risa said.

Risa was about to wave and line up for the lift, but she stopped and came back to me.

”Yesterday, you did something pretty interesting. You will tell me all about it later.”

I noticed Yurina, who had turned back behind Risa, bow her head slightly. It seemed Risa had found out. While I was struggling to find an answer, Risa blew me a kiss.

 ”Then, see you later~♡”

”Minoru-sama, we will be going,” Yurina said.

Risa caught up with Anri-san while taking Yurina, and they lined up for the lift to the intermediate course.

 Now, what was next?

 ”Minoru~”

 ”Hm? What is it, Chifumi?”

”We are going to the intermediate course too~”

Manaka, Mitsuki, Asari, and the group’s dungeon training instructors from Anri-san’s group.

 ”Are you going together?”

”No, after a bit more training.”

”You are careful~ Where did the usual go-with-the-flow Minoru go~?”

”That is a mean way to put it. I am the careful type. Or rather, are Anri-san and the others not going together since they went first?”

”At first, we are going to a different course from Anri-san and the others~”

 ”Why?”

”There is a slightly distant course where you can see a great view, apparently. It seems Risa-chan and the others decided they did not need to go that far~.”

A place with a great view. When I heard that, I also started to feel like going. But I could go with Risa and the others later.

 ”Well then, we are off!”

 ”Yeah!”

I returned Mitsuki’s salute and watched them leave.

Now then, the remaining members were over there.

Near the management building, I spotted the flashily dressed group in a space where people played in the snow. They were gathered on the sidelines where children made snowmen and families had snowball fights. Under Sawa’s instruction, Yui and the five others were gathering snow into one place.

 ”What are you doing?”

 ”We are making a kamakura.”3

At Sawa’s answer, I almost nodded — then caught myself. No, that was not right. Taking up space would be a problem.

”That is why I chose a spot on the edge where nobody goes. We will not cause trouble.”

”That is not the problem, but…”

”Then what is the problem? Look, that parent and child are making one too.”

In the direction Sawa pointed, a parent and child were attempting to build a kamakura.

”It is a size problem. That child is clearly pre-school age. It is a small kamakura that only children can enter, right? The full-size one you are trying to make would be in the way. No.”

”Understood. Then we will make a small one.”

Sawa told Yui and the others to stop gathering snow.

At the current stage, a snow pile about 50 centimeters tall and 2 meters square. When Sawa made a small hole in the edge, she stuck a palm-sized tree branch into it.

When Sawa put Mana into it, the tree branch started to rustle and grow fast. It widened the hole to push snow from inside, and in no time, a kamakura big enough for one person to barely fit was finished.

 ”You…”

”Fufun. How is it? My skill is pretty good, right?”

”Ah. It is magnificent,” I conceded.

The Inherent sorcery passed down in Sawa’s family, the Nieda house, was a sorcery to control plants. Using a tree branch picked up from nearby to construct a kamakura was a rather clever application. The interior was firmly covered with branches and leaves, with thick leaves spread across the floor.

”But at this size, only one person can enter, right?”

”No problem. It is fine as long as there is space for me to enter.”

Sawa crawled into the snow hole on all fours. She fit, though there was almost no extra space.

”I will wait here leisurely for everyone to come back. Yui, Yuu, Megumi, and Miku — thank you all.”

”Hey, is that fair to everyone?”

Even though they had helped, they could not even enter. Was that not a waste of their efforts?

”It is fine. We made it for Sawa in the first place.”

 ”We want to ski more~☆”

The workers themselves did not seem to complain. I felt they were being put to good use by the dungeon data authors, but if the group was running smoothly, that was fine. I joined them and made one small snowman each, about the size of a hand, placing them on top of the kamakura.

I left Sawa, who had started playing a mobile game inside her personal kamakura, and returned to the beginner course with Yui and the four others. On the way, Yui spoke to me.

 ”Hey, Minoru.”

 ”What is it?”

 ”How was Megumi?”

 ”Are you asking that now?”

”I am asking because it is now.”

With Yui’s face still forward, only her eyes flicked back for a moment. Yuu, Megumi, and Kaharu-san were following a short distance behind. Good timing for secrets. I continued in a low voice.

”Well, for me, it was a meal served without downsides. I enjoyed it. I properly achieved 2-totsu.”4

 ”Minoru, were you okay?”

”No one stabbed me, and my body was fine.”

”Then it is fine. I am relieved.”

With that, Yui left me and joined Yuu and the others, lining up for the lift. Megumi made eye contact with me, turned red, and Yuu teased her — making things a little awkward.

After skiing several runs, Risa and the others returned. When I asked Anri-san about the place with the great view, she offered to guide us, so we decided to go with everyone, including Yui and the others.

We changed lifts three times and arrived at a high point. The area around us was open, with several signboards set up near a small mountain hut.

There was no sign of Chifumi and the others, but many ski guests milled about. It seemed to be a photo spot — numerous people held cameras.

”This is the highest point. What you can see over there is the town, and you can also see the airport.”

Anri-san pointed to where a group of buildings could be seen.

”Looking at it like this, the 13th District is vast, isn’t it…”

The 13th District was not a land where you could see the horizon. An endlessly spreading earth stretched before us, and I felt the enormity of its scale.

 '(silence)’

Hinoki was saying they wanted to go outside. I overlapped my hands to make a shadow and secretly took out Hinoki. Procedures were often required to bring a spirit into a leisure facility. I did not know the rules here and would be troubled if it became a problem, so I covered Hinoki with my Mana to prevent the surrounding sorcerers from noticing.

Hinoki moved from my hand, crept inside my clothes from the neck, and peeked out, gazing in the same direction I was looking. The dry sensation was a little ticklish.

 ”What is wrong?”

 ’What is… a strange feeling.’

 ”A strange feeling?”

 ’……’

Hinoki stayed silent. Were they sensing something? Yui and the others were making noise in front of the signboard. There was still time. About a minute passed before Hinoki broke the silence.

’I feel the sign of my power.’

”Here? This is quite far from the 13th District.”

’I have no memory of a place like this… but it is a nostalgic feeling.’

 Hinoki turned toward the town.

 ”Is the fragment over there?”

 ’I do not know… just…’

 ”Just?”

’I think the fragment of power was originally on this mountain.’

 ”Here?”

’Yes. I feel the sign of power from this mountain. I thought it was my imagination yesterday, but now I am certain.’

 ”……”

The fragment of Hinoki’s power — something that could not be found even with the Tatemiya family’s connections and the Head house members’ influence — was here.

 —

 Summary:

Minoru enjoys a morning bath with Megumi, strengthening their new, intimate bond. Later, the group heads to a ski resort for a day of training and leisure. Unexpectedly, they run into Shoji-kun, leading Minoru to speculate on deep, mysterious connections between the characters’ backgrounds.

The group enjoys a variety of winter activities at the ski resort, with the protagonist carefully observing his companions’ progress. After a series of casual interactions and snow-play, they ascend to the highest point of the mountain for a scenic view. The moment is marked by a profound discovery when the protagonist’s manifestation detects a fragment of their power hidden on the mountain, creating a shift from leisure to an urgent, unresolved mystery.

 —

 Trivia:

The distinction between Break-Lock and Break-Seal serves as a primary marker of Minoru’s personal agency in power dynamics.

Megumi’s continued use of honorifics despite the physical intimacy underscores the rigid social hierarchy of the Manaka group.

The engineer Ogura is explicitly identified as the dungeon manager and a future superior for Anri, hinting at the professional interconnectedness of sorcerers.

Shoji-kun’s mobility on the snow is a direct indicator of his superior upbringing compared to the protagonist’s party.

The Nieda family possesses an Inherent sorcery specialized in plant manipulation, which Sawa uses creatively to build shelters.

The 13th District is described as a land lacking a visible horizon, emphasizing the scale of the world compared to the ski resort area.

Hinoki’s ability to sense fragments of power provides a direct link to the protagonist’s ongoing investigation into supernatural remnants.

Minoru and Megumi have a pre-existing intimate relationship that Yui is aware of and occasionally interrogates.
