Volume 5 Chapter 18 Day Three: The One Waiting in the Sealed Dungeon

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Our frantic pursuit of Anri-san and the werewolf brought us right back to where we had all started: the hotel.

An ominous premonition crept over me—a suffocating feeling that we were all being danced like puppets on someone else’s strings.

 ”Kuga-san, where is my sister?”

”She headed to the basement to double-check the sealed dungeon.”

 ”Got it. Thanks!”

Risa bolted forward, but I caught her by the shoulder, cutting off her momentum.

 ”Wait.”

 ”What?”

”If we go, we all go together.”

 ”…Understood.”

I turned back to verify the status of Shoji-kun and the others.

His entire group was fully assembled. The woman who had snapped out of her trance had joined them, and they were currently locked in a hushed strategy meeting.

Having apparently reached a consensus, they approached us, and we immediately pooled our information.

Reviewing what we knew so far, it was painfully clear we were completely on the defensive. A thick, unsettling tension hung over every single one of us.

If Anri-san were truly in her right mind, there was no way she would have come back spinning lies about us splitting up the work. It was only natural to assume that, just like the werewolf, she was being manipulated by someone else.

”By the way, where is Risa’s mother?”

”I believe she’s over in the administration office.”

When Manaka answered my question, Okuda-san—the woman who had come to her senses—wore a deeply uncomfortable, guilty expression. Judging by her reaction, this wasn’t the kind of relationship where she could just smooth things over by pleading, “Our group was manipulated along with our leader, the Majin, so please forgive us.”

Well, we could sort out that mess later. Right now, our priority was tracking down Anri-san.

Risa had a word with the hotel staff, and we finally made our way down toward the sealed dungeon.

The moment we stepped onto the third basement floor, Shoji-kun tensed up.

”I catch Ogura-san’s scent. And… Naruse Anri-san’s scent is here too.”

”Can you tell if she’s lucid or not?”

”The distinct scent signature is incredibly strong. She’s almost certainly being controlled.”

An attack could come from anywhere at any second. With Shoji-kun taking the lead, we advanced cautiously down the corridor.

Partway through, we found the massive iron security door tightly shut.

”There’s no doubt they went through here. Is there any way we can force it open?”

Shoji-kun looked toward us, clearly hoping we had a solution, but realistically speaking, it was a tall order.

”For now, let’s just assess the situation…”

The management office was completely deserted, but the door to the caretaker’s room had been left unlocked.

The main security computer was still up and running.

 ”I’ll take a look.”

Sawa stepped up, her fingers clacking rhythmically across the keyboard. In a matter of seconds, the security lock was bypassed.

 ”What did you do?”

”I just typed in the password.”

”No, I got that part. How did you actually know what the password was?”

 ”It’s written right there.”

Stuck to the edge of the monitor was a tiny sticky note scribbled with a meaningless string of characters. There was even an access card left sitting right beside it. Talk about rendering security utterly pointless. We truly had their abysmal digital literacy to thank for this breakthrough.

I let Sawa keep working to check the logs and system uptime.

”The door was opened once about ten minutes ago. Her older sister must have done it. I’m opening it up now, so Minoru, you guys go on ahead. I’m going to dig a little deeper into this PC.”

Leaving Manaka and a few others behind for the moment, the rest of us—comprising myself and Shoji-kun’s group—pressed forward.

We moved through a winding cavern, descending a flight of stone steps until the dungeon entrance finally opened up before us. The cave was filled with blind spots and heavy shadows, making it an absolute textbook location for an ambush, yet there was no sign of the people who had preceded us. Which meant…

 ”They’re already inside the dungeon.”

”Without a doubt. More than ten people were gathered in this room until just moments ago.”

Shoji-kun chimed in, validating my quiet murmur.

Now we were in a tight spot.

This particular instance was a static, open-field type dungeon.

The moment you passed through the rippling barrier wall, everyone would materialize in the exact same location, and the area surrounding the spawn point was completely exposed.

If the parties who entered ahead of us were waiting with hostile intent, we would walk straight into a concentrated firing squad the second we crossed over.

The real dilemma was deciding who would pull the chestnuts out of the fire and take that initial risk.

As everyone silently exchanged glances, a single volunteer stepped forward.

It was Okuda-san. She was the lone woman from the manager’s group who had successfully broken free from the mind control.

”I’ll go in first and establish a beachhead. Out of everyone here, I’m the most familiar with my group’s offensive capabilities and the specific traits of Anri-san’s party. If it’s just a matter of buying time for everyone to enter safely—just playing defense—I can manage somehow. Kaoru-kun, will you let me handle this?”

 ”Understood. Please be careful.”

A firm look of mutual understanding passed between the two.

With that, our insertion order was locked in.

We quickly shared our final tactical data, verified our equipment, and centered our minds, bracing for the breach. Every single person present was equipped with an Escape Ball. Even if someone took a fatal blow inside the dungeon, it would only count as their first activation, ensuring their life would be absolutely safe.

 ”Let’s go!!!”

Okuda-san charged straight into the portal.

Shoji-kun’s group vanished right after her, and finally, with Asari taking point, our squad plunged into the dungeon.

The interior of the dungeon presented the exact same vista we had witnessed just a few hours prior.

A colossal torii gate loomed ahead1, with a small mountain visible in the far distance.

Contrary to our grim expectations, there was no entrance-camping ambush.

What did match our predictions, however, was the presence of the werewolf. Standing a short distance away from the entrance was a white werewolf, perfectly motionless. Surrounding it were three women. There was no mistaking them—it was the exact same pack we had clashed with back on the snowy mountain.

But Anri-san was nowhere to be seen.

”Look over there. There are silhouettes near the top of the mountain.”

Following the direction Mitsuki was pointing, I spotted tiny human figures. The color of their outfits matched Anri-san’s perfectly. There were five similar shadows surrounding her. They had to be the members of her group. Were they all being manipulated as a collective unit?

The moment we took a step forward, the white werewolf reacted. It bared its razor-sharp fangs, snarling at us in a clear display of intimidation.

”Leave this place to us and press onward. It’s time for round two. We’ll take care of these guys.”

Having transformed into silver werewolves, Shoji-kun and his pack stepped up to the front line.

 ”We’re counting on you.”

’Oh no… he’s hot…’—I realized firsthand that that’s the kind of joke you can’t actually crack when real, life-threatening trouble is staring you dead in the face. The atmosphere was simply too heavy.

Leaving the two confronting factions behind, we sprinted past them, desperately pursuing Anri-san. The white werewolf made absolutely no move to chase us down. While part of the reason was undoubtedly because it was keeping a wary eye on Shoji-kun’s pack, that didn’t seem to be the whole story. Obstructing our pursuit wasn’t their primary objective.

The theory that their original goal was to divide our forces—and that we had walked right into their trap—loomed larger and larger in my mind. If there was a specific reason we were being targeted like this…

’Aye, it might be me, y’know.’

A telepathic self-report came from Hinoki.

It was entirely possible that someone who had acquired a mere fragment of power was now orchestrating this entire scheme to lay their hands on Hinoki, the true prime body.

Had someone found out that I had successfully subdued Hinoki?

But we had come too far to even consider turning back. Keeping our guards raised to the absolute maximum, we pushed deeper into the terrain.

Without encountering a single Aberration along the way, we navigated through the marshlands and dense trees, finally catching up to Anri-san at the summit of the snow-covered hill. To be more precise, Anri-san had been actively waiting for our arrival.

Her party consisted of six women in total.

I had heard that Anri-san attended a private high school, so it wasn’t particularly strange for her to have a party comprised entirely of Strong-Females (Shoji’s group members)2.

Five of them were facing our direction. Their expressions were unnaturally, eerily blank.

Even as we closed the distance between us, they showed zero reaction.

The lone figure with her back turned to us was Anri-san.

 ”Sister!”

”My, how terribly swift your arrival.”

In response to Risa’s desperate cry, Anri-san spoke as she slowly turned around.

”To think you would return in such short order. You are far more capable than I had anticipated, Risa. Or perhaps… someone among your companions possesses an exceptional talent for Mana detection? Whoever might it be? Pray tell, for I am most eager to know.”

 ”…Who the hell are you?”

”My, answering a question with another question? How utterly… commonplace. If your soul becomes as hideous as your physical appearance, you shall be completely ruined, you know? And to think you carry the Yukizuki bloodline as well. As your elder sister, it breaks my heart.”

”You’re not my sister! Who are you?! Answer me!!”

Anri-san let out a soft, mocking giggle, while Risa boiled over with pure rage, her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Risa looked ready to launch an attack at any single second.

”What a helpless child… it truly makes me question whether you actually possess even half of the Yukizuki blood.”

”Don’t you dare mess with me!”

”Listen to me until I am finished. Right now, Risa, I am not the “Naruse Anri” you think you know. I am the rightful guardian of this domain, of this alternate world—I am “Yukizuki Anri”.”

The conversation was veering into completely bizarre territory.

Hearing Anri-san spout lines that sounded like a textbook case of Chuunibyou triggered a massive, jarring sense of dissonance inside me.

”What do you even mean by that?! I don’t understand! Explain it in a way that actually makes sense!”

Risa demanded fiercely, piling on the questions.

The raw friction of this sisterly confrontation left the rest of us completely unable to interject.

”Can you genuinely not feel the resonance of the Yukizuki blood within you? Do you truly not comprehend what our purpose is in this land?”

 ”Sister!”

Anri-san completely brushed off Risa’s desperate inquiries, refusing to give a straight answer.

”Such a flawed, disappointing younger sister. I suppose it can’t be helped.”

With a fluid, deliberate motion, Anri-san spread her arms wide.

As if responding to her gesture, the entire mountain began to shudder. No, wait, was it something else…?

A massive, rustling roar swept through the trees. Gradually, the distinct, deafening hum of buzzing wings drew closer and closer.

 ”Minoru, this is…”

 ”Yeah. I see it.”

Tiny fluffs of down—looking exactly like floating clumps of white snow—began to manifest from every imaginable direction. They swarmed together, coalescing into a massive, cloud-like mass directly above our heads. It was an absolutely absurd, terrifying number of Aberrations.

”These children have multiplied significantly, and their strength has grown profound. Conversely, the power of the sealed entity has been chipped away, leaving it incredibly weakened. As we stand today, we finally possess the power to completely erase the sealed existence.”

”Sister? Is that what you’ve been plotting this whole time?”

”Bringing an end to the seal is the ultimate, long-cherished ambition of the Yukizuki clan. To liberate our bloodline, which has been shackled to this wretched earth by a Binding Vow for an eternity… That is the sole purpose behind my actions.”

She sounded completely intoxicated by her own grandiose words.

While she looked exactly like a textbook puppet being manipulated, it would be a massive pain if this actually turned out to be her own genuine will. Since I had only known Anri-san for the past few days, I lacked the crucial context to make a definitive judgment call. But Risa, who knew her best, was utterly convinced her sister was being controlled, so I decided to trust her instincts for the time being.

Hypothetically speaking, if this was her own free will… was it a late-onset case of Chuunibyou? Or maybe high school sophomore syndrome? Even if that were the case, the sheer drop-off from the person she was just a few hours ago was staggering. She was a completely different human being.

Actually, I had experienced a terrifyingly similar situation before—specifically, when Yui and Yuu had suddenly undergone a massive character shift.

It had taken a considerable amount of time for the two of them to fully settle into their Jirai-kei personas3. During that transitional phase, their facades would inevitably slip. Yet right now, looking at the girl standing before us, I couldn’t detect a single shred of unnaturalness in her performance.

Had she been completely hiding her true colors from me and Risa from two days ago up until this morning? Judging by Risa’s sheer shock, the Anri-san she knew had never behaviorally manifested anything remotely like this before. To begin with, her sister hadn’t exactly struck me as someone capable of such masterful deception…

Well, there was only one way to find out. I physically clapped a hand over Risa’s mouth to silence her and forcefully shoved myself into the conversation.

”Do you mind if I ask a quick question?”

 ”Whatever could it be, Tatemiya-san?”

”There’s just something I’d really love for you to clarify.”

”By all means, go right ahead.”

”Based on what you just spouted, it sounds like you’re completely dead set on erasing this seal… are you actually serious about this?”

 ”I am entirely serious.”

The casual ease vanished from Anri-san’s face. Sensing that I was treating her claims lightly, a flicker of sharp displeasure crossed her expression.

”When we spoke to your mother earlier, she seemed to possess absolutely zero detailed knowledge regarding the sacred gem or the specifics of the seal. Was all of that just a giant lie? Wow. Truly impressive. You’ve got enough talent to be a professional actress. You’re just like Risa.”

 ”…………”

”…Don’t tell me you suddenly ‘awakened to the true reality’ in just the span of the last few hours? Because if that’s the case, you are the absolute textbook definition of a prime target for a multi-level marketing scam or a shady cult. You should really take a step back and look at yourself calmly. We’ve got plenty of time.”

 ”……”

Faced with my blatant mockery, Anri-san simply offered a chilly smile in return.

”It seems my acting skills aren’t completely wasted after all, considering I managed to thoroughly deceive a foolish Tsuyo-Osu (Strong-Male)4. Naturally, I have been aware of everything from the very beginning.”

”So everything has gone precisely according to your grand design?”

 ”Yes. But of course.”

 ”Huh, is that so…”

Her response was exactly what I had anticipated. However, I had absolutely zero intention of taking her words at face value.

If her answer were actually true, she should have been able to snap back immediately after my first prompt. Yet there had been a massive, unmistakable delay before she spoke, and she hadn’t given a straight answer until I piled on the pressure. Looking at that lag, it was highly probable she couldn’t answer immediately because she was hiding some kind of underlying motive.

Right behind me, Chifumi and the others suddenly began to radiate a crushing pressure born of pure Mana. It wasn’t directed at me; they were locking a clear, murderous hostility onto Anri-san. If someone openly hurled insults at me—the Majin and undisputed leader of our group—there was no way a sane person wouldn’t realize how the group’s Majo would react. I refused to believe she was so short-sighted that she couldn’t predict something that basic.

From this perspective as well, it was glaringly obvious that something hidden was lurking beneath this verbal sparring.

Had she deliberately provoked us just to incite a reaction from Chifumi and the others?

I subtly flashed a silent hand gesture behind my back, signaling my girls to cool down, while I methodically organized the pieces in my mind.

”Let’s try one more. Anri-san, what exactly is your end goal here? I don’t really see the point of going through the trouble of staging a self-kidnapping hoax just to run us ragged. If your only goal was to set up this exact scenario, you didn’t need to drag everyone up a freezing, snow-covered mountain.”

”…I believe I already told you. My goal is the release of the seal.”

 Another beat late.

”Right, which is why I’m telling you that if everything you’ve said up until now is true, you could have broken the seal whenever the hell you wanted. There was absolutely no logical reason to stir up a massive crisis right when we happened to be around. If you wanted to avoid any outside interference, you and the Dungeon Manager could have just slipped away and shattered the seal in total secrecy, couldn’t you?”

 ”……”

 Silence. She didn’t retort.

”I really want to know the exact reason you chose to execute this plan today of all days—the precise moment we arrived all the way from the 13th District. What was the point of dragging us onto this stage when we’re nothing but a massive obstacle to your plans? Why today? Why not yesterday, or the day before that?”

 ”……”

Anri-san remained utterly silent. No, that wasn’t it—she literally couldn’t answer.

Channeling my inner master detective, I decided to shove the only two logical deductions derived from the facts straight into her face.

”There are only two possible patterns that explain this scenario. First: breaking the seal isn’t something that can be done easily. For example, the release requires highly specific conditions, or perhaps a unique trigger item. The only reason that would necessitate dragging us into the mix… is if the process requires Risa’s direct cooperation. To use a classic, cliché trope, maybe it requires the life of someone carrying the Yukizuki bloodline. That would perfectly align with why you were so aggressively pressuring Risa to visit District 5 in the first place. …If you really were a willing conspirator from day one, I have to say, I’m deeply disappointed.”

 ”……”

Granted, the missing puzzle piece might actually be Hinoki resting inside my own body, but I kept that detail entirely to myself.

Frankly, because the second scenario was looking like the real jackpot.

”The alternative pattern is that you are completely under someone else’s control. The mastermind who was pulling the strings on that werewolf is currently pulling yours. This whole ‘acting of your own free will’ routine is a complete and butter lie. Some kind of unexpected crisis cropped up on their end, forcing them to pull the trigger today, at this exact timing. Our involvement was nothing more than a fluke. …Personally, I’d heavily prefer this outcome. It’d feel a little awkward having to thoroughly beat down Risa’s older sister, so I’d much rather track down the actual caster and beat the absolute living hell out of them instead.”

Before we had even entered the dungeon, Shoji-kun had explicitly noted that Anri-san gave off the distinct scent of someone under mind control.

That was all the validation I needed to back up my second theory.

Now then, I wondered exactly where the truth was hiding.

 —

 Summary:

Bypassing the hotel’s digital lock via Sawa’s tech skills, Minoru’s alliance enters the static basement dungeon to rescue Anri-san. Inside, Shoji-kun’s werewolf squad holds off a hostile pack of white werewolves while Minoru’s primary group races to the summit of a snowy hill. Minoru confronts an unnaturally cold, aristocratic Anri-san, using calculated deduction to break down her grand design facade while an unknown mastermind’s ultimate choice hangs in the balance.

 —

 Trivia:

The hotel’s digital computer had an extremely low level of security because the raw password string was carelessly left on a physical sticky note stuck directly to the monitor framework.

Entering an open-field static instance dungeon spawns everyone at the exact same location, presenting a major risk of getting entrance-camped by an organized firing squad.

Escape Balls ensure total physiological survival during dungeon operations, meaning that even a theoretically fatal blow will simply consume the item’s first activation counter.

Anri-san claims her real lineage identity is Yukizuki Anri rather than her public name Naruse, stating that the clan’s lifetime goal is to shatter an ancient seal bound by a Binding Vow.

Minoru notices a distinct behavioral lag in Anri-san’s speech patterns during intense interrogation, indicating that she is processing hidden script constraints or operating under direct psychological manipulation.

Chifumi and the other Majo respond with an immediate burst of hostile Mana the second an outsider hurls insults at Minoru, reflecting their hardwired loyalty to their group’s Majin.
