Volume 6 Chapter 4 Third Semester Dungeon Training
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Today is the first day of dungeon training for the third semester.
We had regular classes in the morning, ate lunch, then left. The Sword‑Hammer Cave we will explore is ten train stops away. From the station we take a bus into the mountains.
”Alright, we’re heading out.”
”Yeah. Good luck.”
”You too.”
Ryota says goodbye to friends in class and leaves the high school.
First, we walk to the station.
”I can’t believe we were just here last semester…”
Risa looks angry. She has a reason.
To reach the station we walk through the shopping street, which has a commercial district. Seeing it now shows how comfortable we were last semester.
”We’ll be there in about an hour if we catch our transfers. Let’s hurry.”
”Got it.”
We split Risa’s luggage among us.
The heaviest item is Mitsuki’s Hama Kongou. Next is Risa’s large magic pistol, then Yurina’s sword, then Chifumi’s staff. Risa carries many magic pistols, from assault rifles to rocket launchers, shotguns, sniper rifles, and handguns. She picks three each time and rotates them. They take a lot of space.
There is a rule: once you use public transport from the school to a dungeon, you can use private transport on later trips. If we ride train and bus now, we can use a car later.
Many groups go to the dungeon. It would be nicer if the school gave rides, but they never do. They are inflexible.
The annoying part: getting new gear resets the rule. Getting a new weapon forces another public‑transport trip. It’s unfair.
Changing gear options does not reset the rule. For example, modifying a grenade on a magic pistol or changing uniform patches does not count. Swapping an Assault rifle ARX for ARMX does reset.
Risa uses many guns, so she must make at least one trip carrying all her gear.
”Whoever made this rule is a nightmare.”
”No doubt!”
”Next time we will definitely take a car!!”
”Yeah, yeah. Let’s do that!!!”
Inamori‑san agrees with Risa. Risa grumbles while carrying the firearms.
Inamori‑san is in the Shoji group.
Inamori‑san also uses a magic pistol.
She has twice as much luggage as Risa. You can see how hard that is.
”You want some help?”
”No, I can’t have another group help us. The thought is enough. Thanks.”
I politely decline Komoda’s offer. He walks toward the same destination.
Three groups go to Sword‑Hammer Cave: my group, Komoda’s, and Shoji’s.
Being with these two groups feels risky.
When we reach the station we go to the office before passing through the ticket gates.
We must file a permit to carry hazardous weapons on public transport.
”Okay, we’ll get the paperwork done.”
”We’re off.”
Chifumi and Risa go into the office.
The rest wait with the luggage left outside.
Students must follow many rules to bring blades and guns on trains and buses. Safety measures are strict. People stare at our big bags but do not think we are dangerous; they are just curious. This is normal for this season.
Trust between sorcerer high‑school students and the public built this system over many years.
”Hmm? Isn’t that Kibe?”
A trio approaches Yurina, who is standing idle while bags pile up at the office. They wear plain‑folk high‑school uniforms. One of them is an old childhood friend.
”Oh. Shibuya, huh.”
”Long time no see.”
”Yeah… long time, right? Nice to see you again this year.”
”Same here. Good to see you.”
Yurina talks to her friend naturally.
It is a weekday afternoon. They should be in class, so we wonder why they are here. Yurina seems to think the same.
”What’s up? Why are you at the station now?”
”Just shopping. Skipping self‑study to get club stuff.”
”The club…”
”I joined the theater club in high school.”
”I see. That’s Maruyama’s influence, right?”
”Something like that. Are you heading to the dungeon?”
”Yeah.”
The childhood friend sees our big bags and guesses what’s happening. Yurina clearly carries a sword case.
One of the two guys looks suspicious.
He suddenly reaches for the bags next to Yurina.
”So this is a sorcerer’s weapon? May I touch it?”
Before his hand reaches the magic pistol case, Yurina slaps it away with a sharp sound.
”Don’t!”
”Ow!”
The slap sounded loud but was not forceful.
The guy widens his eyes and shouts.
”What the hell, lady!? You just smacked me!”
”Don’t touch our gear without asking.”
”Hitting me because I reached out a little is too much!”
”You tried to touch it without permission.”
”Don’t play games with me!”
I see him getting angry and trying to grab Yurina. I step between them before it escalates.
”Cut it out.”
I grab the man’s wrist and stop him.
”Let go!”
”Oh… whoops.”
”Whoa!”
He asks me to let go, so I release him in a way that makes him lose balance. He stumbles away.
”If you try to touch that girl, you have to deal with me.”
I apply a little pressure. He is a plain‑folk with no mana, but he understands I am serious.
”…I was just curious. Don’t get so worked up. And you shouldn’t carry important stuff carelessly.”
”I’m not worked up. I’m protecting you. If a plain‑folk tries to touch the gear, the anti‑theft magic could cause serious injury. It can cause erectile dysfunction at your age.”
”Wha… Tch!”
He clicks his tongue and walks away.
”H‑hey! Sorry, Kibe, I’m leaving.”
”Yeah.”
The childhood friend says goodbye to Yurina and chases the other guy. I call out to follow.
”If he ends up with erectile dysfunction, tell him to see a sorcery doctor.”
”Got it. Thanks for the advice. …Well then, Kibe, see you around.”
”Yeah.”
The friend waves goodbye to Yurina and me, then leaves the station building.
”Minoru‑sama, I’m sorry.”
”What for? It was good medicine for that cocky guy, wasn’t it?”
I pat her head.
”Nya…”
Yurina makes a cat sound, meaning she made a mistake and apologizes.
”You did well stopping him. Thank you.”
”My body moved on its own. I wasn’t worried about the anti‑theft system breaking. It was just a reflex. I didn’t want him touching my things… I’m sorry.”
”It’s fine. If you hadn’t spoken up, I wouldn’t have known. Don’t worry.”
Risa comes out of the office and backs me up.
”That’s right. He was wrong to touch my gear. Yurina, you did nothing wrong.”
”Risa…”
”More importantly, you talked to Shibuya like a normal person. That was the right way to handle it.”
”Hmm… yeah… you’re right.”
Yurina looks bright.
”There was a time you said you’d never contact Shibuya again. You said it showed your resolve to join the group. Remember?”
”Is that so?”
I try to confirm Yurina’s true intent.
”I am one of Minoru‑sama’s Strong‑Females (Shoji’s group). I thought I shouldn’t do anything that other males might misunderstand.”
”I appreciate that, but you don’t need to avoid him more than necessary.”
”Is… that so?”
She answers as if she already predicted me.
I’m sure Risa told her the same thing before.
”She even stopped visiting her family’s dojo because she thought it was bad to run into him.”
”I was guilt‑tripped by Minoru’s younger sisters. I thought about how stubborn I was. Now I’m back at the dojo.”
Yurina explains why Risa warned her. Her story seems reliable.
”You don’t need to be so careful. Even if we talk, we are still Minoru’s Strong‑Females. Our hearts can’t waver. If the other side has hidden motives, we can use that to our advantage.”
”After hearing that, I changed my thinking. He seems careful too. He only comes to the dojo after checking I’m not there. I talked with him after a long time, but felt nothing. I tried not to give him the wrong idea.”
”Minoru, you aren’t getting worked up over that exchange, right?”
I answer.
”If it’s just friendship, I have no reason to forbid it.”
”See?”
”However!”
I make my point clear.
”Keep proper boundaries. Nothing untoward should happen.”
”Got it.”
”Understood.”
If they hope for a one‑in‑a‑million chance, it will end badly. I cannot allow them to act and cause us trouble. In my position, I would have to eliminate them. I want them to keep a safe distance.
In that sense, Ryota has been trained well.
The earlier guy seems to have found new happiness. His attitude suggests low chance of future trouble.
”All set with the paperwork~. Let’s head to the station~.”
Chifumi calls out as she comes out. We all grab our luggage and go to the station.
At the nearest station we take a bus to the dungeon. The same paperwork is needed to board the bus. The bus company office is in a corner of the station building.
We arrive at a management office beside a small dam in the mountains. The building serves both as dam management and dungeon management.
We split into groups for dungeon entry. More than an hour has passed since we left school.
The Dungeon Manager gives a brief explanation. It is a semi‑Static dungeon, Labyrinth type, Rank D. We already knew this.
After confirming equipment, we decide entry order by rock‑paper‑scissors. I lose.
We wait for the Komoda and Shoji groups. When only the Shoji‑kun group remains, Shoji‑kun talks to me.
”About the other day…”
”Yeah? You mean winter break?”
”That. I heard something concerning from the current dungeon manager, Ogura‑san. I wanted to share it.”
Shoji‑kun looks serious.
”The shrine ruins Ogura‑san found… someone might have destroyed them.”
”Not just aging?”
”He said the shrine collapsed over ten years ago, but he doubts it broke on its own. He thinks someone ruined it long ago.”
”…And? Who did it?”
”I didn’t hear that far. He didn’t say clearly. It’s up to you how to act on this info.”
”Got it. Thanks.”
”I’ve passed it on.”
Shoji‑kun walks away, leaving troubling information.
Ten minutes pass after the Shoji‑kun group enters. It’s our turn.
Inside the management building, past an iron door, a black wall ripples across the bedrock.
”Entry, please.”
Hearing the announcement, Yurina enters first, followed by Mitsuki and Chifumi. I enter last as the leader. I step forward; the black wall offers no resistance.
The space is a large cave entrance, about the size of a gym, surrounded by rock walls.
The entrance is blocked by the black wall, so we cannot exit the cave.
Moss grows on the rocks and glows faintly, providing enough light to explore.
”I heard it’s dark.”
”It is~. Should we light it up~?”
”No, it’s fine.”
I stop Chifumi from using sorcery to make light.
From my shadow, many Snow flies appear. They flutter and emit light above our heads.
”How’s that? Brighter now, right?”
I feel rich with a glowing Snow fly on my fingertip and boast. Mitsuki swings her kanabo lightly and answers.
”Yeah, easier now. How long does this light last?”
”It lasts while we explore. They swap out, so there should be enough light overall.”
”Heh~, that’s convenient~.”
Everyone looks up at the Snow flies shining overhead.
”We are starting exploration, but…”
There’s another thing at the start. A large cave lake covers nearly half the entrance. A single water channel connects from deep inside the cave. Spring water flows into the lake.
”We just have to go upstream along this channel, right?”
”Yes. There are branches, but the main channel goes to the next floor. If you know the trick, the route is easy to see.”
Asari, who studied this dungeon, answers firmly. She gathered enough info despite I being in a different dungeon.
”Is everyone’s gear okay?”
”Everyone has an Escape ball and a Return slip~.”
I receive the final check from Chifumi. Preparations are complete.
”Alright, let’s go.”
”Yes!”
The third‑term dungeon capture has begun.

Summary:
Ryota and his group prepare for dungeon training while navigating inconvenient travel rules and carrying heavy armaments. At the station, an encounter with Yurina’s childhood friend Shibuya leads to a tense standoff when an outsider tries to touch their gear. Ryota successfully de‑escalates the situation while enforcing boundaries, leading to a moment of reflection among his female group members.
The group proceeds through bureaucratic entry procedures at a dam‑based management office to enter the Sword‑Hammer Cave. Tensions rise as the protagonist receives alarming intel about artificially destroyed shrine ruins from a peer. Despite the mystery, the team successfully enters the dungeon and establishes light using sorcery‑bound Snow flies.
—
Trivia:
The School enforces a travel rule requiring students to use public transport at least once for any new weapon or gear before they are allowed to use private vehicles.
Yurina’s cat‑like sound is an involuntary reaction of embarrassment or reflection on her own behavior.
Ryota’s group is one of three tasked with exploring the Sword‑Hammer Cave, which is noted for potential future complications.
The anti‑theft processing on the equipment is designed to have specific physical consequences for untrained individuals who attempt to handle them.
The dungeon entry process requires a specific office check‑in at a local station building similar to train boarding protocols.
The management facility is dual‑purposed, handling both dam operations and dungeon oversight.
The group uses rock‑paper‑scissors to decide entry order, resulting in the protagonist entering last.
The dungeon’s entry is marked by a Black wall that effectively seals off the exterior once passed.
The dungeon is confirmed as a semi‑Static Labyrinth type, categorized as Rank D.
