Volume 8 Chapter 1 High School ②nd Year

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

It was a peaceful spring day.

I’d advanced to my second year of high school.

But the changes weren’t just a new classroom. The class roster had changed a lot too. The reason? Course tracking—we were being split between humanities and science.

Unlike first year, when all the members of each group had been in the same class, our second-year classes would divide based on academic track. Of course, if a whole group happened to lean one way, they’d stick together—but groups like that were surprisingly rare.

As for my group? Science track had me, Mitsuki, and Asari. Humanities had Chifumi, Risa, and Yurina. A clean split right down the middle. We’d had quite the fuss over this decision at the end of last year.

For the record, Ryota also chose science, so we were in the same class. We were killing time as usual before the opening ceremony.

 And then…

”Hey, looks like we’re with Tatemiya and Okuma again this year. Nice to see you,” Komoda said.

 ”Komoda, same here,” I replied.

 ”Yo~” Shoji added.

”Shoji, good to see you too,” I said.

 ”Likewise.”

Yep. Komoda and Shoji had ended up in the same class as well. Or rather, they’d been placed here.

At this point, it was hard not to suspect the school had deliberately created a “problem child” class and dumped all the troublemakers into it. If the teachers actually considered me a problem student despite my perfectly upright behavior, I’d be seriously offended.

”Everyone, it’s time for the opening ceremony. Please assemble in the auditorium.”

The door slid open, and in walked our second-year homeroom teacher—Tarumii Chihiro-sensei.

She was younger than Tamai-sensei, our homeroom teacher from first year, and had a more serious manner. She’d been Komoda’s teacher last year. And naturally, in this world, she was a good-looking woman with a fantastic figure.

On the way to the auditorium, we ran into Chifumi’s group.

Apparently, Tamai-sensei would be continuing as their homeroom teacher.

After the usual long principal’s speech, we returned to our classroom for the standard rundown of the year ahead.

Our second year featured two major events.

The school trip, and the Exchange Battle.1

The school trip would happen in the fall, right before the school festival. We had free rein in choosing the destination. It was supposed to be the most enjoyable event of the year.

As for the other event—the Exchange Battle.

That wasn’t something every second-year would participate in. It was an event that only concerned certain groups. Even just signing up came with a lot of strict conditions, but it looked like we’d be joining. The teachers would provide more details later to those interested.

Finally, the first-semester dungeon evaluation results were given to the group leaders. Actual classes would start tomorrow. Today was a half-day.2

After exchanging goodbyes with my classmates, I grabbed Mitsuki and Asari from the classroom and headed to the shoe lockers, where we met up with Chifumi’s group. Chifumi, Risa, and Yurina were waiting for us in a tight cluster. As we approached, Chifumi spoke up, her voice carrying a hint of nostalgia.

”There sure are a lot of new students~” she said.

”Yeah, we were like that last year. Man, feels like ages ago…” I replied.

My remark earned me a jab from Mitsuki, leaning in with that “bad friend” energy.

”Minoru, you sound like an old man,” Mitsuki said.

”Huh? I’m still a fresh, vibrant sixteen!” I shot back.

”The fact that you said ‘fresh and vibrant’ is exactly why you lose,” she retorted.

”Then what am I supposed to say?!” I demanded.

”Just don’t use unnecessary words,” she said.

”I’m trying to emphasize!” I insisted.

”Do you need to emphasize?” she countered.

This guy. Never lets you have the last word.3 I bickered with Mitsuki all the way out of the school grounds.

The scene was classic for this time of year—groups of first-year boys (some with colored ribbons, some “Strong-Male” types) heading home separately from the White Ribbon girls. I mentally cheered them on: Survive, little ones. Survive.4

Before parting ways, we stopped by a café on the shopping street.

”Now that Momono-neesan’s gone, we have to use this place instead,” Risa argued.

Her logic: since there were no more excuses, we should patronize it ourselves.

The café was quiet, without the noisy buzz of a family restaurant. They didn’t seem to mind if you sat with a single coffee for hours, so it looked like this place would be easy on our wallets too.5 None of our members were the noisy type, so I doubted we’d be a nuisance even in this peaceful café.

We claimed a table in the back and ordered drinks, then immediately got down to business: setting our strategy for the first semester of second year.

 First, general impressions.

”I ended up in a different class from Minoru~” Chifumi said.

”First time we’ve been separated since elementary school, huh,” I noted.

 ”Right~?” Yurina added.

Chifumi wasn’t there. She’d been with me in the same classroom ever since elementary school. I have to admit, I felt a little unsettled today.

Not that I’d ever say that out loud—especially not where Chifumi could hear it. I’d rather my mouth split open.6

”Don’t go cheating on us, you hear?” Risa said.

 ”Minoru-sama…” Yurina added mournfully.

Risa and Yurina were looking at me with sad eyes.

Unlike Chifumi, who’d chosen humanities for positive reasons, these two had gone that route because the science subjects were just too much. A purely negative reason.

Well, that was their choice—they’d better make it work. I knew they weren’t totally uninterested in humanities subjects. And Risa, seriously, cheating was out of the question.

”Don’t worry, we’ve got Minoru’s back. Leave it to us,” Mitsuki said.

”We’ll meet for lunch in the cafeteria, and dungeon training’s still a group activity, so it’s basically the same as before,” Asari added.

Mitsuki and Asari had both chosen science, same as me. Naturally, we were in the same class.

Mitsuki had a surprisingly artisan-like streak when it came to the Onigahara workshop. Asari… well, I think she could’ve gone either way but ended up choosing science to balance the numbers.

 As a group, splitting 3-3 wasn’t a bad outcome.

We were bound to make new friends in our new classes. Komoda and Shoji? Those were exceptions. The more connections we had outside the group, the better.

”Seriously, couldn’t they have kept the classes together and just separated us for specialized subjects? Like, common classes together, track-specific stuff separate?” I asked.

”I heard it used to be that way. But with more students heading to higher education, they switched to this for efficiency’s sake,” Chifumi replied.

Probably meant it was easier for both students and teachers if everyone in a class was at a similar academic level? What do I know.

”We’ll have separate classrooms for regular subjects, but everything else is group-based—just like last year~. Even the school trip is by group~,” Chifumi said.

”The school trip’s not until second semester, though,” I pointed out.

 ”It’s still a ways off~,” she replied.

Mitsuki cut into my and Chifumi’s conversation.

”Hey, hey. The Exchange Battle is what matters NOW. School trip’s later, but if we don’t handle the Exchange Battle paperwork early, we’ll miss the deadline. You’re doing it, right, Minoru?” Mitsuki demanded.

 ”Ah… well… how should I put it…” I hedged.

”What? You’re NOT doing it?!” she exclaimed.

I could feel Mitsuki heating up.

I glanced sideways at Chifumi. Unlike Mitsuki, she didn’t wear her emotions on her sleeve. Still, I knew she strongly hoped I’d participate.

 The Exchange Battle.

A year-long competition against groups from outside the school.

It was a system designed to promote mutual improvement between National High School groups and Private High School groups through long-term competition. That was the official line, anyway.

To be blunt: it was a way for National High School groups to acquire a second group—a “subset.” A legal means for Majin with the power and the ambition to get their hands on additional Strong-Females beyond the first six.

For Private High School groups, it was a popular event for building connections with the Majin at National High Schools—which also meant the barrier to entry was high.

For the record, Mitsuki’s older brother, Koki-san, had competed throughout the past year and successfully obtained a subset.

In the 13th District, there was one Sorcerer High School each for the National and Private tracks.

Meaning, if I participated in the Exchange Battle, our opponents would be a group from Shisei High School.

I think you can see where this is going.

If I joined, there was a good chance we’d be up against Manaka’s group. …Honestly, I should probably hear the full story from those witches who clearly have their own agendas before making a decision.7

”This isn’t the place to discuss the Exchange Battle,” I said.

 ”This place?” Mitsuki asked.

”Ah, no, I’m not dissing the café. I mean it’s not something to talk about openly in public,” I explained.

”Okay, fine, as long as that’s what you meant,” she replied.

I’d meant it seriously, but apparently my phrasing hadn’t been great.

The Master’s always saying to avoid phrasing that could be misinterpreted. Yeah, fair point.

”Alright, new topic then. The next practical dungeon,” I said.

”Minoru-sama, we heard the head teacher would inform the leaders,” Yurina said.

”Can you fill us in~?” Chifumi asked.

The three in the other class hadn’t been told which dungeon was on deck, so I passed along the info.

 ”It’s Kinpira Palace—Outside Gate.8

 ”Ah, I see…” Chifumi murmured.

 ”Here it comes…” Mitsuki said.

Chifumi and Mitsuki seemed to catch on. Risa and Yurina just said, “Huh.”

”It’s a D-rank dungeon modeled after the shrine we visited for New Year’s. Semi-static, open-field type,” I explained.

”Same rank as Sword-Hammer Cave—Surface Layer, right~? Semi-static like the previous two too. We’ve had labyrinth-type dungeons so far, so the open-field setup is a bit unexpected~,” Chifumi said.

”For me, open-field means I can’t use my inherent sorcery… but on the flip side, that’s really the only downside. Everyone else’s sorcery works fine in either open or closed spaces, right?” I asked.

 Chifumi, Mitsuki, Risa, Yurina, Asari.

All of them were unaffected by open-field conditions.

Come to think of it, we’d already had some experience fighting in open spaces.

The mountain in District 5, the Sealed Dungeon, the Insect Cage. Nothing catastrophic had happened.

”Against the anomalies in Sword-Hammer Cave, we managed just fine without my Tatemiya Sorcery. I think we can handle this,” I said.

”We’ve all gotten stronger too, so it should be okay~,” Chifumi agreed.

Chifumi and I were optimistic, but Asari and Yurina shared their concerns.

”Regular exploration and combat should be manageable. The real problem is strong enemies. If a Unique Variant appears and Minoru-san can’t go all out, that’s still a significant worry…,” Asari said.

”Minoru-sama’s combat power—especially his sorcery offense—is clearly above average,” Yurina added.

Yurina’s flash of power the other day had the potential to match my Shock magic someday, but for now it was still a work in progress. She’d been training hard since then but hadn’t been able to repeat it. Maybe there was some condition we hadn’t worked out yet.

Meanwhile, Mitsuki and Risa leaned more toward Chifumi’s take.

”Minoru’s spatial control ability is just lifting the simultaneous activation limit, right? You can still use Shrimp and Centipede normally. With those two around, most situations should be manageable,” Mitsuki said.

”And now we’ve got Asunaro too. If push comes to shove, I can step in for Asunaro and provide backup for Minoru even against tougher enemies,” Risa added.

Risa gave her own chest a light tap.

It was true—Asunaro’s presence was overwhelming. In terms of overall group strength, they were definitely stronger than in third semester.

”Maybe School wants to assess how we perform if Minoru can’t use his Inherent Sorcery. I think we can address the challenges by clearing dungeons~”

 Risa voiced her question.

”By the way, does School actually know about Minoru’s Inherent Sorcery? Like, are they assigning dungeon placements based on what sorcery each of us uses?”

”The basic info should be from the entrance paperwork. We had to submit our profile forms, right? There was a section for a brief Inherent Sorcery summary.”

”Ah—right, I remember now. I submitted mine as ‘None.’”

”We had parent-teacher conferences at the end of each term, didn’t we? Didn’t they discuss information that was okay to share, with parents present?”

”Nope, never came up. I guess you don’t get those conversations if you don’t have an Inherent Sorcery.”

Since Naruse-mama was also present at those meetings, the teachers probably avoided the topic. It couldn’t be helped.

”Combat records from the Guidance facility, plus battle data from first semester’s Simulated Dungeon. School should have been compiling individual sorcery info from all of that.”

Asari supplemented with her usual lecturing pose.

”There’s also the Tower Dungeon. Originally, it was designed to measure a sorcerer’s abilities. Every time someone enters and fights, their data gets recorded.”

 ”Hmm…”

”That’s why sorcerers who prioritize PvP combat, or those who want to keep their Inherent Sorcery hidden, tend to avoid the Tower Dungeon.”

Following Asari’s explanation, Yurina turned to me with a question.

”Is the reason we haven’t entered the Tower Dungeon to keep our information hidden?”

”That’s part of it… but the bigger reason is that it’s not a real dungeon, so you don’t get Drop items. If we’re planning to do real dungeon exploration in the future, there’s no point entering a Tower Dungeon with zero rewards.”

Once Yurina seemed satisfied, I steered the conversation back.

”The features of Kimpira Shrine… Asari, can you explain?”

”Ah, yes. A little, at least.”

Asari prefaced her explanation and began.

”The entrance is through a stone torii gate on the rear approach to the shrine. From there, you can enter the dungeon. The dungeon manager is connected to the shrine. Apparently, the dungeon has existed for several hundred years. If we consider that it appeared shortly after the shrine was built, it has quite a long history. It’s older than the Commercial District, older than Tamamo Castle, and within the 13th District, it’s one of the oldest dungeon clusters, second only to Sekisan and the Yasoya Spirit Paths.”

’It was already here back in my day~’

If even Hinoki remembered it, it had to be ancient.

”Since it’s old, does that mean the strategies are already established?”

”Yes. It’s a three-floor dungeon: D-Class ‘Gate Exterior,’ C-Class ‘Shrine Grounds,’ and B-Class ‘Main Hall.’ The monsters, bosses, Unique Variants, dungeon mechanics, and gimmicks for each floor—almost all of it is mapped out. Compared to Sekisan and the Yasoya Spirit Paths, which are A-Rank, it’s considered a relatively safe dungeon despite its age, and many professional explorers visit it.”

 ”That’s good to know.”

”If we make an offering at the shrine, we can get dungeon intel.”

 ”Pretty clever of them…”

First, we’d gather intel on the “Gate Exterior.”

My family had plenty of information on Kimpira Shrine. I’d have Chifumi, Mitsuki, and Asari research and compile what their families had as well. For what we lacked—money would fill the gap.

By the time we’d talked through all that, it was getting late.

Today was the day everyone was heading back to their own homes.

We disbanded at the station, and Chifumi and I walked home together.

 ”Hey, Chifumi.”

 ”What~?”

”Can I ask you about the exchange match? What are you all thinking?”

 ”Figured you’d ask~…”

Chifumi had known I’d bring this up.

”I want Manaka-chan and her group there too. Wait until the weekend. Can we call everyone to the annex?”

”Everyone—as in Manaka, Sawa, Yui, and Yuu?”

”Everyone else too. Risa and the others as well.”

”Not the annex. Let’s meet at the Takino residence instead. Having Manaka’s companions pass through the Tatemiya gate right now would be… difficult for them.”

”Mm… understood. Then the Takino residence it is. We’ll talk there. All of it.”

Chifumi’s expression told me she’d made her decision.

Finally—it was time to speak openly with Manaka’s companions.

 Honestly? I was terrified.

But somewhere inside, I felt a strange peace settling in.

 Summary:

The chapter opens with Minoru starting his second year of high school, where his group splits 3-3 between science and humanities tracks, and he ends up in a class with Komoda and Shoji. During a café meeting with his group, they discuss the upcoming Exchange Battle, which would likely pit them against Manaka’s group from Shisei High School, and a new open-field dungeon that neutralizes Minoru’s spatial sorcery. The group remains divided on how concerned they should be about the dungeon, with Asari and Yurina expressing worry while Mitsuki and Risa remain confident in their current capabilities.

The group discusses their upcoming dungeon exploration at Kimpira Shrine and whether School is evaluating their performance without Minoru’s sorcery. Asari explains the dungeon’s history and structure while the protagonist coordinates information gathering from multiple families. The conversation shifts to an emotional climax as Chifumi agrees to bring everyone together at the Takino residence to speak openly about the exchange match, leaving the protagonist feeling both terrified and strangely at peace.

 Translation Notes:

1 The Japanese term “交流戦” (kouryuu-sen) literally means “exchange competition,” but in this context it’s a euphemism for a system where National High School groups can legally acquire additional female members (“subsets”) from Private High School groups. The translation capitalizes it as a proper institution.

2 The Japanese term “半ドン” (han-don) is casual slang for a half-day school schedule. The translation uses “half-day” to convey the shortened school day without over-explaining.

3 The Japanese idiom “ああ言えばこう言う” (aa ieba kou iu) means “if you say one thing, they counter with another.” The translation renders it as a natural English equivalent that captures the back-and-forth argumentative dynamic.

4 The original Japanese “生き残れ (サバイバー☆)” uses the loanword “survivor” with a star symbol, creating a humorous battle-cry tone. The translation preserves the dramatic irony and lighthearted energy.

5 The Japanese “お財布的” (o-saifu-teki) means “budget-wise” or “economically.” The translation uses “wallet-friendly” as a natural English colloquialism that preserves the casual, practical tone.

6 The Japanese idiom “口が裂けても言わない” (kuchi ga sakete mo iwanai) literally means “won’t say even if my mouth splits open.” The translation preserves the dramatic imagery while naturalizing the phrasing to English idiom patterns.

7 The Japanese “腹の中に一物ある” (hara no naka ni ichimotsu aru) literally means “having something in one’s stomach,” meaning hidden motives or schemes. The translation uses “ulterior motives” as the natural English equivalent while preserving the implication of concealed intentions.

8 The Japanese “きんぴら宮” (kinpira-guu) is a pun combining “kinpira” (a stir-fry dish, usually burdock root and carrot) with “宮” (palace/shrine, read as “guu” in this context). The translation preserves the palace/shrine aspect while the pun is lost in English—this note explains the wordplay.
