Majokore v8c6

Volume 8 Chapter 6 Group Representative Match

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

During lunch break, I wolfed down my meal and headed to the guidance room with Chifumi.

We had a meeting scheduled with Utsui—a fellow Majin from our year—to discuss the Exchange Battle.

I’d booked the room and time myself.

When I opened the door, the room was empty. We were early. I took a seat and waited for our guests.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Utsui walked in with Metsugi, the Lead Majo of his group.

Utsui’s build was bigger than mine, smaller than Mitsuki’s. Heavy with fat across his belly, arms, and legs—the kind of frame that suggested high Mana reserves. A solid dungeon explorer’s physique. He gave off that Tsuyo-Osu confidence, the self-assurance of a Strong-Male who knew his place in the world. But having met Koki-san, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this guy was all gilded plating—a counterfeit pretending to be the real thing.

Metsugi, on the other hand, looked every bit the part of a trendy Majo. In this world, a chubby build was the mark of attractiveness. The two of them together gave off the vibe of a jock and a queen bee from some foreign drama. The type who’d get dethroned a few episodes in, of course.

”Kept you waiting?” Utsui asked, not bothering with pleasantries.

”Nah, you’re right on time. Have a seat.”

The two of them sat down across the table from us.

”This is our first time talking face-to-face. I’m Utsui Gen’ichirou from Group 5. Nice to meet you.”

”Tatemiya Minoru from Group 3. Likewise.”

I rose slightly from my seat and returned his handshake. Firm grip. And seriously—reaching across a table to shake hands like that? Even his gestures were straight out of a drama.

”So? This is about the Exchange Battle participation, right?” he prompted.

”Right. My group leader and yours already talked the other day. I heard you were informed of our preferences.”

 ”Yeah, I heard.”

”Then I’ll get straight to the point. Sorry, but I need you to withdraw from the Exchange Battle.”

 ”Why?”

”I heard you’re planning to nominate Kuga’s group. They’re my prey. I want you to stay out of it.”

 ”I see.”

Utsui gave me a look that said “And?” so I explained my reasoning and tried to persuade him.

”When I first enrolled, they humiliated me. This is payback. That’s not all—there was also an incident involving the Simulated Dungeon Generator about a year ago. Conveniently enough, the perpetrators are in that group. As a victim, I have every right to retaliate.”

 ”That’s pretty intense.”

”Maybe. But… I don’t need any more reasons than that. I’ve got a valid reason to fight them in the Exchange Battle. The quarrel’s already in full swing—my hand’s already raised. Don’t expect me to back down now.”

 ”A quarrel, huh… That’s weak.”

 Utsui’s words didn’t add up.

Weak? What was he talking about? As I waited for him to explain, he continued.

”Choosing your opponent for revenge. That’s pathetic. Small-time. Unmanly for a Tsuyo-Osu.”

 ”…What?”

What the hell did he just say? He was looking down on me, evaluating me from above. And he had the nerve to call me unmanly?

”Utsui, what do you mean by that?”

”Just what I said. Pathetic and pitiful, Tatemiya.”

At the direct insult, Chifumi—seated beside me—gave off a sharp, dangerous aura.

I held up a hand to stop Chifumi, then turned back to Utsui.

”I don’t know what criteria you’re using to judge ‘pathetic’ or ‘pitiful.’ But isn’t it pathetic that a guy who couldn’t even hold onto the opponent he negotiated for is now stubbornly eyeing someone else’s prey?”

At my provocative words, Metsugi’s demeanor shifted, her calm composure cracking. I’m not the one who started being rude, you know.

”A strong male doesn’t need a reason to claim many females.”

”Wait, are you seriously calling yourself strong?”

 ”Obviously.”

God, the way this guy talked got on my nerves.

”Whether you’re strong or weak doesn’t matter right now. Don’t change the subject. Going after multiple girls and poaching someone else’s target are two different things. I couldn’t care less if you chase after unattached girls—do whatever you want. But crossing that line? That’s against the rules. And you know what? As a Majin, saving face is a natural obligation. Get it? There’s no logic behind what you’re saying.”

”What you’re spouting is the logic of the weak. I don’t need it. Strong sorcerers are superior. The strong sorcerer’s will takes priority. That’s my logic.”

What was wrong with this guy? He wasn’t listening at all.

Was he seriously that brainwashed by strength-worshipping ideology? This guy was dangerous.

”Dragging out these negotiations is a waste of time. The strong claim everything. That works, doesn’t it?”

 ”No, it doesn’t.”

Utsui ignored my words and stood up. Grinning, he circled around the table and suddenly thrust his fist toward my face.

 ”What’re you playing at?”

The left jab he’d thrown with zero wind-up stopped just a few centimeters from my face.

 ”Hoh.”

”Hoh” my ass. Don’t give me that “Just testing you” vibe. If I hadn’t been on my best behavior, you’d be dead right now.

Chifumi kicked her chair back and stood up sharply. In response, Metsugi rose as well, the air turning explosive.

 ”Stop.”

 ”Minoru!” Chifumi protested.

 ”I said stop.”

 ”…Yes.”

I remained seated, signaling Chifumi to calm down. I stood up from my chair and faced Utsui eye-to-eye. He held my gaze without flinching, so I made a counterproposal.

”If you want to settle this with strength, fine. How about a quick one-on-one between you and me?”

”Let’s not do that. Better to settle it with group members fighting.”

 ”Running away?”

”You’ve got pride too, don’t you?”

His reply didn’t quite answer the question. Was this his way of showing off how relaxed he was because he thought he’d win? What a piece of work. Still—the fact that he had enough calm to avoid the worst possible response to my provocation told me something.

”I’m fine with leader vs. leader. If you want a member vs. member match, that’s fine too. Our side’s Chifumi here. Yours is Metsugi, right?”

”Hold up. Let’s use this to decide.”

I followed Utsui’s gaze to see Metsugi pulling a die from her pocket. Talk about prepared.

”We’ll match group-internal rankings. Same rank fights same rank. We’ll decide the rank with this.”

”Huh… If it lands on 6, that means us?”

”Then it counts as 1. Let’s go.”

Utsui took the die from Metsugi and rolled it. It came up 3.

 ”Third-rank vs. third-rank, then.”

 ”Looks like it.”

Before my sentence even finished, Metsugi reached for the die. But Chifumi was faster, snatching it away.

 ”Ah—!” Metsugi gasped.

Metsugi flinched, but I took the die from Chifumi’s hand and checked it. I rolled it. It came up 3. I picked it up and rolled again. Still 3.

”Make your cheating less obvious next time. I’ll let it slide this time out of respect for the sheer effort you put into it.”

 ”What are you talking about?”

Ignoring Utsui’s feigned ignorance, I picked up the die from the table, crushed it in my hand, and tossed the pieces into the trash bin.

”The match is today after school, third slot. Wait for us at the Guidance facility. Let’s go, Chifumi.”

 ”Yesss~” Chifumi chirped.

I led Chifumi out of the guidance room, leaving Utsui and his group behind. Utsui said nothing more.

Once we were out of the guidance room, I took Chifumi back to our classroom and broke the news to Mitsuki and the others: negotiations had fallen through.

”So that’s how it went. Risa, I’m counting on you.”

”Got it. I don’t mind fighting, but… is it really okay that it ended up being third-rank vs. third-rank?” Risa asked.

”The situation just unfolded that way.”

”Wouldn’t it have been better to invalidate the match when you called out the cheating and strong-arm them into letting Chifumi fight?” Mitsuki suggested.

”I thought about that too. But honestly, my blood was up, so I chose to crush their scheme altogether instead. Don’t worry—with Risa as she is now, there’s no way she’ll lose.”

It wasn’t hard to guess why Utsui had specifically orchestrated a third-rank vs. third-rank match.

Their group’s third-rank was a Three-Limit Majo. By contrast, our side had Risa—Double Breakthrough and from a non-sorcerer bloodline. Looking at the catalog stats available in advance, anyone would bet on their victory.

Too bad for them. Those catalog stats were from over two months ago. And on top of that, her actual combat capabilities hadn’t been updated since enrollment. Risa had grown tremendously over the past year, and now she even had Asunaro as a trump card tucked away inside her. Even if she wasn’t in peak condition, I couldn’t picture her losing if Asunaro took control of her body.

Utsui probably thought Risa gave him the best odds—but in reality, the winning move for them would’ve been to pick Yurina or Asari. A classic case of the schemer drowning in his own schemes.1

’Risa, Prince Charming—should I step in?’ Asunaro’s voice echoed in my mind.

”Thanks. If things get truly dangerous, I’ll rely on you. But honestly—considering the matchup—I think Risa can win on her own.”

”Really? Their Majo’s a martial type too, right? You sure?” Mitsuki pressed.

”Yeah, I have good reason. It works in our favor if they underestimate Risa. Showdown’s after school. Chifumi, brief Risa on the opponent and help her strategize.”

 ”Got it~” Chifumi nodded.

’Risa, do your best.’ Asunaro’s encouragement whispered through.

While Chifumi and the others mapped out their strategy, I handled some other arrangements.

Specifically, I spread word to the other groups in our class that we’d be fighting Utsui’s group. Letting Ryota, Komoda, and Shoji know about the situation would probably suffice.

 Afternoon classes ended. After school.

I led everyone to the Guidance facility.

At this time of year, the facility was in full operation—first-year Tsuyo-Osu training their Initial Strong-Females. The slot we’d booked was the third one after school. We used the wait time to work on our battle plan.

Risa—now in her dungeon-exploration uniform—was equipped with a standard loadout.

That meant an AR-type in her hands, an SR-type slung across her back, and an SG-type mounted on her thigh. Her accessory was Majo’s Tears.

Utsui’s group was already waiting in front of the Guidance facility.

They had one girl in exploration uniform as well, carrying a bow and quiver. Their group’s third-ranked Majo. Hagimori, I think her name was.

She had sharp, upturned eyes that gave off an aggressive vibe like Risa. But her build was typical sorcerer stock—not my type—and Risa beat her in the face department. That was already two wins in our favor. It was a landslide in combat power.

”You’re all here. Then let’s go.” Tarumii-sensei announced.

 The supervising teachers were two.

Tarumii-sensei, and Utsui’s homeroom teacher. The second slot’s match had ended early, with the room already cleared. They’d been waiting for us to enter.

”Sorry to keep you waiting, sensei.”

 ”You’re late.” Tarumii-sensei chided.

”Utsui—I’m talking to the teacher. Don’t interrupt.”

A glare from the other side’s members followed.

I ignored her and entered the facility.

By the wall, I patted Risa’s shoulder—psyching her up.

 ”Risa, go kick their ass.”

”Got it! Leave it to me!”

Risa moved to the center of the facility while we headed to the second-floor observation seats.

The opponent was getting some kind of pep talk from Utsui’s group. Probably something like, “Just do what you always do and you’ll win.”

Utsui and his crew took position on the second floor, directly across from us.

Risa and her opponent received the rules briefing from the teacher, exchanged bows, and moved to their starting positions. Both specialized in long-range combat—they were starting from nearly twenty meters apart.

After the teacher withdrew, an announcement came over the speakers.

”We’re ready to begin the match between Naruse-san and Hagimori-san. Surrender or exceeding the damage limit will end the match immediately. If the witnesses determine that continuing is dangerous, or if the match exceeds the time limit, we will declare a winner based on our judgment.”

Seeing the two facing each other nod, the start was called.

 ”Then… begin!”

 Risa moved first.

She raised her AR and fired a volley.

Hagimori, meanwhile, raised her bow in front of her body, maintaining her starting posture without making any attempt to dodge. The Magic Bullet that should have hit her changed course unnaturally just before reaching her, passing by her side.

”A defense against ranged attacks—a magical artifact’s effect, I take it.”

Risa’s quick-draw was impressive. Chifumi’s group might manage it, but normally, pulling off defensive sorcery at that moment would be unthinkable. She must have pumped mana into the artifact to activate it instantly.

 Risa wasn’t rattled.

A countermeasure of this level was easy to anticipate. Risa’s response was swift.

The pistol chattered—rat-a-tat-tat! Unlike her first shot aimed straight at Hagimori, the Magic Bullets scattered in different trajectories.

Some veered off course, some held their line—Hagimori’s defense field had been mapped. If any part of her body was exposed, Risa could target it. If not, she’d switch tactics. This time, she chose the latter: close in and attack from inside the barrier, or blast through it with overwhelming force.

Hagimori’s attack posture didn’t look ready yet. Risa chose to close the distance.

While Risa moved, Hagimori held her bow aloft, taking her time to convert mana. Sorcery activated before Risa could get close.

 ”Shield of the Raging Wave!”

Between Risa and Hagimori, several semitransparent, vertical rectangular shields appeared.

Bang. A single shot from the AR sent a Magic Bullet ricocheting off at a random angle.

”Similar to Asari-san’s crystal defense sorcery, isn’t it?”

”It does look similar. But my crystals are harder and deploy faster.”

Yurina’s observation drew a rare show of annoyance from Asari. She clearly didn’t like her technique being compared to such a plain defense. Unusual. She usually kept her calm, but it seemed even she was irritated by the opposing group’s attitude.

Rat-a-tat-tat! Consecutive shots struck the same spot, each deflected.

Even concentrated fire couldn’t break through with the AR. Risa abandoned that approach, switching to her SG while circling around the shields.

Hagimori adjusted her aim, tracking Risa’s movement. The semitransparent shields repositioned with every shift, continuing to block Risa’s advance.

Fwoosh. An arrow from the bow passed straight through the shield, aiming for Risa’s face—only to be met by a shot from the SG.

Before a second arrow could fly, Risa fired again. The close-range shot was blocked by the shield.

I could’ve sworn I heard Risa click her tongue.

She shot down the second and third arrows while trying to circle around, but the semitransparent barriers kept interposing themselves between her and Hagimori.

Risa kept firing at the shield while intercepting arrows.

Her rate of fire was double Hagimori’s. Intercept, attack; move, intercept, attack—the pattern continued. But their disadvantage remained. The shields were too strong; even multiple SG blasts couldn’t penetrate.

At close range, curving shots with the magic pistol were impossible. Ricochets were dangerous too. Deciding this exchange was pointless, Risa pulled back while batting aside the arrows.

As distance opened, the mana arrows stopped coming.

Hagimori began preparing a heavy strike, eyes fixed on Risa as she reloaded. The shape of her bow shifted, mana gathering thicker around the arrow.

An archer’s techniques fall into three patterns: rapid-fire, multi-shot, or a single devastating blow. Everything else is just variations—elemental modifiers, homing properties, and the like. And this one? Nine times out of ten, it was a charged piercing shot. They’d use their greater mana reserves to brute-force through Risa’s defenses.

This deduction had basis. Utsui was a “Duty-Bound Theorist.”

His style: boost durability first, secure safety, then crush the enemy with one overwhelming strike. A binding vow—”no tricks”—enhanced the power of his sorcery. Building an unbreachable defense and only then turning to offense—that was the Theorist’s way. And Hagimori’s fight so far matched it perfectly.

Naturally, fighting while maintaining defensive sorcery burned through mana fast. But the mana capacity difference was absolute. A majo with a large mana pool, using Theorist tactics against the underfed Double Breakthrough Strong-Females in an open Guidance facility… Hagimori’s victory looked certain.

 Normally, one would think that.

 Too bad. Risa wasn’t normal.

Risa switched to her SR and stopped moving, taking aim while beginning mana conversion.

Risa and Hagimori both finished their “charge,” sorcery triggering. Hagimori moved first.

The silent mana arrow, the moment it left the bow, thickened to about thirty centimeters in diameter—more a beam of light than a projectile. Blazing with heat and fire, it shot toward Risa.

 Risa stayed still, SR braced.

The muzzle tracked the center of the beam.

Just before the barrel and arrow tip met, the arrow began dissolving like smoke.

Hagimori and Utsui’s group probably couldn’t see what was happening. The arrow’s size and flame attribute were working against them. A jet of pitch-black flames from the barrel was wrapping around the mana-forged arrow, burning it away entirely.

When the arrow’s momentum faltered, Risa pulled the trigger.

The Magic Bullet from her SR sliced through the thinned arrow, pierced the shield, knocked the bow aside, and struck Hagimori’s chest guard, denting the armor.

 ”Guuh!?”

Before she could recover, the second and third shots hit.

The second struck the exact same spot as the first. The third hit her unprotected neck.

Stunned by the third blow, Hagimori stood frozen.

Given the power of the first two shots, the neck hit shouldn’t have left her standing. The damage limit must have reduced the impact.

”Hagimori-san’s damage limit has been exceeded. The match goes to Naruse-san.”

Tarumii-sensei’s announcement echoed through the facility.

Risa walked over to Hagimori, still wearing an expression of disbelief.

 She extended her hand—a handshake.

”Come on~ Let’s go join Risa.”

 ”Yeah, yeah.”

I followed the others, who had already started toward the stairs.

Down on the first floor, Risa came running up to me, smug look plastered across her face.

Her nostrils were practically flaring with pride. I patted her head, praising her efforts.

”You can praise me more, you know!”

”Sure. The rest can wait until tonight.”

Gently prying Risa off me, I approached Utsui, who was standing near Hagimori, and delivered the verdict.

 ”We won. Keep your promise.”

 ”…Yeah.”

Utsui answered curtly, then fell silent. Turning his back to me, he reached toward Hagimori’s neck—where the match-ending shot had landed—and began examining the mark.

The rest of their group glared at me like I was their sworn enemy. Among them, one girl’s expression carried guilt mixed with the hatred. She was probably the one holding the group back from going too far.

But whatever. They picked the fight. Don’t hold a grudge just ’cause you got served. My goal was achieved, and I felt vindicated. There was nothing left in the way of challenging Manaka in the Exchange Battle.

We cleaned up the Guidance facility, restoring it to its original condition.

After thanking the teachers for supervising, we waited for Risa to change, then headed home.

All of us went back to my place.

After getting home, we had our first full-group sleepover in a while.

I know it’s simple-minded of me, but Risa’s win had put me in high spirits, and I ended up going harder than usual.

Especially Risa, who’d fought so well today, and Chifumi, who’d worked hard on the negotiations—I made sure to give them a little extra affectionate attention.

 —

 Summary:

Minoru and Chifumi met with Utsui and Metsugi to negotiate Exchange Battle participation, but Utsui refused to yield and instead provoked a confrontation by insulting Minoru’s motives as unmanly. After discovering Metsugi’s loaded dice, Minoru crushed the cheating device and forced the match to proceed as a third-rank versus third-rank battle. Now Risa must face Hagimori in an after-school match that Utsui rigged to exploit perceived power gaps, unaware of Risa’s hidden ace Asunaro.

The narrator psychs up Risa before she enters the facility for a long-range battle against Hagimori, where Risa demonstrates exceptional quick-draw and tactical adaptability. Risa ultimately wins the match by revealing a hidden black-flame ability that counters Hagimori’s theorist-style defensive sorcery. With the victory secured, the narrator’s path to challenging Manaka in the Exchange Battle is now clear.

 Translation Notes:

1 Japanese proverb literally meaning “the schemer drowns in their own schemes.” Used here to describe Utsui’s miscalculation in choosing Risa as the opponent—he thought he was being clever by selecting what appeared to be the weaker fighter, but in reality his choice backfired because Risa has grown significantly stronger than her outdated stats suggest. The English rendering preserves the ironic outcome of over-strategizing.
