Chapter 105 Understanding the Rules of This Land

The woman finished her meal and brought a drink with a sweet aroma to her lips. That had been bothering me for a while now.
”I see… I understand quite well now why you all thought of something so audacious and then actually went through with it,” Liliarette said.
While explaining the rules of this land, the woman conducted an interrogation of me. Once everything was laid bare, the details were truly appalling.
After all, I had been forced to confess that from the very beginning, I hadn’t believed a single word the Demon King¹ had said, and that we had planned to seize his entire cultivation site along with the fruit he came to sell.
”Vectra. Do you have any opinions on the matter?” Liliarette asked.
”Yes. I can only be impressed that the Overlord-sama often lets those who oppose him live,” Vectra replied.
”Oh, but isn’t that part of what makes him so wonderful? desuwa,” Liliarette added with a smile.
The tall maid’s name was apparently Vectra-san. There are many other maids here besides her… I wonder if they are all as powerful as Vectra-san is.
This is deep within the Demon Forest², so that possibility is likely high. In the first place, you wouldn’t choose a place like this as a residence unless you had the means to oppose demon monsters.
”Ah… but the mystery is finally solved,” Liliarette said.
”……?” I asked silently with my eyes.
”The Overlord-sama issued a letter of introduction, didn’t he? A letter addressed to Lord Lambdaine³, who is a council member, from me. Apparently, every single person judged it to be a fake? You suspected that everything the Overlord-sama said was a lie, didn’t you?”
”………! N-No way… y-you’re…” I stammered.
Princess Liliarette…! The one who was said to have been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer and gone missing before she could marry into the Republic…!
How could this be…! That letter of introduction—the one Aris and I immediately dismissed as a forgery—it was real…!?
If that’s the case, this is incredibly bad. That letter contained an expression of gratitude toward my grandfather and an introduction for the Overlord-sama.
It said she couldn’t stay under my grandfather’s care, but she wanted to thank him for his kindness. She was introducing someone named Shimizu and asked my grandfather to make use of him in business… in short, those were the contents.
When we saw it, we thought he was just a fledgling merchant trying to get close to my grandfather, a council member. Or perhaps someone sent by other nobles or council members.
We were wrong about everything. From the start, the Overlord-sama hadn’t told a single lie.
If we had simply accepted that letter of introduction honestly, my grandfather would have gained many weapons for his business, starting with white sugar.
This is bad. A massive failure. Not only did I interfere with my grandfather’s business, I crushed the opportunity to establish contact with Princess Liliarette and the Overlord-sama.

However, Princess Liliarette showed a gentle smile once again.
”But the Overlord-sama didn’t hand it directly to Lord Lambdaine, after all. It couldn’t be helped that there was a misunderstanding,” she said.
”Eh…”
”That letter was written in a way that Lord Lambdaine would recognize as having been written by the real me. Someone of Lord Lambdaine’s stature surely has many people trying to get close to him every day… in a way, I can understand why you were suspicious,” the Princess explained.
I felt a great sense of relief that she was empathizing with our judgment.
Thank goodness. This person understands the circumstances.
”Though, the disrespect toward the Overlord-sama is a completely separate matter, isn’t it? desuwa,” Liliarette added.
”……!”
I was wrong. Just because she showed understanding didn’t mean she was necessarily an ally.
No… this person is an ally of the Overlord-sama, and my priority level is incredibly low.
Just because I’m the granddaughter of Lord Lambdaine doesn’t mean she needs to be careful. She won’t give me special treatment. She only sees me as an ignorant woman who opposed the Overlord-sama.

”There were various opinions… but it was decided that we would determine the food you get based on the progress of your education,” she continued.
”Education…?” I asked.
”Yes. …Chocolate⁴, please,” Liliarette said.
At Princess Liliarette’s request, a maid took a small parcel from a wagon. The Princess removed a black lump from the wrapping.
”This drink I’m having is made by melting this ‘chocolate.’ I’ll give you one piece. Try eating it,” she said.
Saying so, Princess Liliarette tossed the object called chocolate toward me.
I didn’t know if I was allowed to use my hands to pick it up, so to avoid offending her, I crawled on my belly, moved only my head, and ate the chocolate.
”………!!”
What is this…!? It’s… it’s sweet…!? It’s delicious…! I’ve never tasted a sweetness like this before…!
”It’s delicious, isn’t it? It’s a favorite of mine, too. It’s a special confection that the Overlord-sama brought from another world, you know? desuwa,” the Princess said.

How many times have I been surprised today alone? I don’t understand what it means for the Overlord-sama to have brought sweets from another world.
But I won’t doubt anymore. Princess Liliarette and the others speak only the truth. I will respond with that firm belief in my heart.
This person likely won’t overlook even the slightest doubt I harbor. Having been raised as royalty, her eye for people must be certain.
”From today, I will educate you during the day. Depending on how much you deepen your understanding of the Overlord-sama… we will decide the type and amount of food given to you according to that progress,” she declared.
In other words, depending on my hard work, I could have access to decent meals…!
She had gone out of her way to let me taste a sweet like this as an example. It was likely a sign that she was prepared to provide not just meals, but these kinds of sweets as well.
”Oh, and one more thing. The Overlord-sama will come tonight,” Liliarette said.
”……!?”
”What is he coming for? To give you your punishment, of course. As the Dominator of the Demon Forest, the Overlord-sama cannot forgive those who have declared war on this land,” she explained.
I wasn’t so dense that I couldn’t perceive the meaning of him coming to give punishment specifically at night.
Since being brought here, the only male I have seen is the Overlord-sama. This place is likely his domain, and at the same time, a harem where he spends time with his wives.
”I will let your meal treatment change based on the results of the education I provide. And how sincerely you can respond to the punishment the Overlord-sama gives… your living conditions will change depending on that,” Liliarette stated.
”Living… conditions…?” I asked weakly.
”Yes. For example, a bed might be placed in this room. You might even be given clothes,” she replied.
Currently, in this narrow space with no privacy, only a toilet is provided. I don’t even have clothes to wear. Apparently, those conditions can be improved.

There was no doubt in what Princess Liliarette said. He truly has the power to make this place his residence.
Vectra-san and… likely Princess Liliarette, too. They have received favor from the Overlord-sama and acquired some kind of mysterious power.
But when faced with the Overlord-sama himself, I still didn’t think I could obey him obediently.
Right now, only Princess Liliarette is here… but if the Overlord-sama entered my field of vision, I think a strong sense of revulsion would emerge, and I have no confidence that I can face his punishment.

And so, in a situation where I absolutely could not resist, my education under Princess Liliarette began.”
