Volume 13 Chapter 359 Chihiro Claire, Buried Treasure Expedition Series
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
On the morning of New Year’s Eve, the piercing chime of my alarm clock reverberated throughout the room.
”Mmm… is it morning already…?”
I sat up in bed, hauling my upper body upright while adjusting a camisole strap that had slithered down my shoulder. A-choo! Ugh… don’t tell me I’ve caught a cold? No matter how much I adore dressing light, keeping the room this warm while sleeping is probably something I should reconsider. I might have placed a bit too much faith in the heating. After donning a fluffy, oversized cardigan, I stepped out and retrieved the Seibaku Newspaper¹ from the delivery bag hanging near the door.
The rooms within the Shirogane Kingdom² function exactly like a high-end hotel; come morning, the maids automatically tuck the newspaper into the entrance pocket. Returning to the sanctuary of my room, I unfurled the paper and scanned the New Year’s Eve television listings.

I folded the newspaper I had been reading in stunned silence.
”Every single one is Aqua-sama!”

Some saint once remarked: if you cannot hope to defeat Aqua-sama’s programs in the ratings, you might as well fill every competing channel with Aqua-sama too. To think the day would actually come when that becomes a reality…
”I mean, which one am I even supposed to watch?!”
I immediately pulled up the Bulletin Board. Those who had seen today’s listings were in a state of absolute chaos.

It’s over…
I looked away from a familiar name I happened to spot. In that brief moment, I thought I saw someone named ‘Shumi the Maiden’ suggesting that one should simply buy seven televisions, but surely that was just my imagination. Hmm… looking at the trends, it seems a majority of people are planning to watch Heaven’s Sword. I think I’ll start with ‘Berry-Berry’ at 6:00 PM and then let the flow take me where it will. I’m recording Heaven’s Sword anyway, so I can just watch it later, and there are always catch-up streams and rebroadcasts, desuno.
”Even so, this ‘Berry-Berry’ project must be the mysterious scroll Emily-san was talking about the other day. I just hope it doesn’t turn into something bizarre…”
* * *
A few hours later, I tuned the television to the correct channel, my heart fluttering with a sense of trepidation. The recording settings were confirmed, and my stash of drinks and snacks was perfectly positioned. As the clock on the screen hit 6:00 PM, an ominous caption appeared.
[New Project! The Tenga Akira Expedition Series!!]
With the narration provided by Tanaka-san—a voice synonymous with special effects dramas—the atmosphere was thick with tension. Now that I think about it, the listings did mention Tenga-senpai was the lead this time. While an Aqua-sama lead makes me nervous, a Tenga-senpai lead might actually be safe, desuwa.
[First and Final Episode Special!!]
Wait? The premiere is also the finale…? As a sudden pang of anxiety hit me, my stomach gave an uncomfortable squeeze.
[Treasure of the Century: In Pursuit of the Tokumoto Buried Treasure!!]
The screen transitioned to a dimly lit room where the host, Ishizaka-san, emerged from a spiral staircase dressed in a sharp suit.
”It has been a long time, everyone. I am your host—and Chairman of the All-Japan Plastic Model Industry Association—Ishizaka Hiroe. Now then, I wonder how many of you recall the legend of the Tokumoto Buried Treasure?” Ishizaka asked.
At that point, archival footage of previous Tokumoto Buried Treasure broadcasts flickered across the screen. This was a legacy spanning decades, starting long before I was even born; I doubt even the host expected this content to be resurrected now. Once the retrospective concluded, the camera cut to Itoi Shigeyo-san, who stood poised at the edge of a windswept cliff.
”After decades of silence, we received word that a scroll depicting the treasure’s burial site had finally been discovered,” Itoi announced.
The scene shifted to a spotlight illuminating a scroll resting atop a crimson cloth. Director Hongo must be in top form today; the flair for dramatic over-production is palpable.
[Greatest Discovery of the Century! Decode the Scroll Unearthed from the Ninja Village!!]
A glance at the Bulletin Board revealed a flurry of skeptical tsukkomi: “What the hell is a Ninja Village! Ninjas don’t exist!! It’s already reeking of a scam!!” While it’s true that some things are better left unknown, the reality is that ninjas do, in fact, exist in this modern age. Actually, there’s even one real ninja within our own religious order… A sharp, stinging pain shot through my stomach.
”And so, we began the monumental task of decoding this ancient scroll,” the narrator intoned.
Another eerie caption flashed onto the screen.
[The Ancient Document Decoding Team!!]
The members were introduced in succession: Kanon-san, Kaede-san, Kotono-san, and finally Emily-san. While some users on the Bulletin Board lamented, “If only it were Hagetoru instead of Emily-sama,” the reality is that Emily-san is none other than Onan*i Hagetoru… Honestly, isn’t that a far more profound ‘mystery of the century’ than the treasure? A pulsing ache throbbed in my gut.
”Shall we try unfurling it for now?” Kanon asked her colleagues.
”Yes, let’s do that,” the others replied.
With Kanon-san leading the effort, the four of them spread the scroll wide.
[Herein lies the record of the location where the treasure of the century is hidden]
Oh! It doesn’t explicitly name the Tokumoto Buried Treasure, but it clearly mentions hidden treasure. The calligraphy is exquisite, and the parchment has that distinct, aged hue of a bygone era; perhaps I can actually let myself hope for something this time. Kanon-san continued to unroll the document.
”What… is this?” Kanon asked, sounding puzzled.
”I suspect this section is intended to be a map or some form of topographical representation,” Emily observed.
The first thing to catch their eyes was a portion depicting terrain that certainly resembled a map. This was followed by a series of cryptic shapes and patterns, concluding with a block of text written in such a flowery style it was nearly impossible to read.
”It seems this is the end of the document,” Kanon noted.
At that moment, Emily-san clapped her hands together. Instantly, my stomach reacted with a sharp pinch.
”Perhaps the initial terrain is a map indicating the treasure’s location, the subsequent drawings are the ciphers required to find it, and the text at the end serves as a hint or some related key?” Emily proposed.
”That’s it! Emily, you’re a genius!!” the others exclaimed in unison.
It certainly seemed plausible once she laid it out like that.
”Even so, we can’t possibly identify this location based on the terrain alone,” Emily muttered.
”True. It doesn’t even specify the prefecture, let alone the city or village…” Kanon agreed.
”Hmm, and I still don’t quite understand what the drawings are supposed to represent,” Emily added quietly.
”Which means the text at the end is the ultimate key. But if even I can’t read it, then surely no one can, right?” Emily asked.
Everyone present nodded in somber agreement. Ah, that’s right. I nearly forgot Emily-san is from the illustrious Yukishiro family. As a direct descendant of one of the Six Houses⁵, she ought to possess the specialized knowledge to decipher ancient scripts or the secret codes used by the elite families. However, if Emily-san found it incomprehensible, then it was likely unsolvable for anyone in that room.
”Well then, I’ll just have to consult those who might be more knowledgeable than I am!” Emily declared.
* * *
The scene cut to a grand table where Kukuri-sama, Kuga Rihito-san, Amakusa Shikimi-san, President Fuji Ranko, and Kokucho Agewa-san were seated. Since Fuji Shion-san was absent, her younger sister President Fuji Ranko was attending in her stead; this was quite literally a modern-day Summit of the Six Houses. Furthermore, Tokumoto Kaori-san—the direct descendant of the Tokumoto bloodline—was also present! The narration and captions immediately leaned into a parody of the Taiga Dramas usually broadcast on the National Broadcaster.
[The Great Six Houses Summit: Featuring the Direct Descendant of the Tokumoto Clan!!]
The Bulletin Board was absolutely lit up, likely riding the hype of the recent Taiga Drama. Conversely, my stomach began to ache at Mach speed. I knew all too well that these incredibly busy, powerful people were only gathered here because of that scroll Akimaru had dug up from somewhere. Ugh! If only I had been able to talk Emily-san out of this back then!!
”So then, can any of you decipher the writing here?” Emily asked the assembly.
Every person at the table cast their eyes upon the scroll, only to eventually shake their heads in the negative.
”This doesn’t match any cipher passed down through the Kuga family,” Rihito stated.
”It’s not of my Clan either. My apologies, Emily-chan,” Shikimi replied.
”Emily-chan, I took a photo earlier and consulted Shion, but she said it was unfamiliar to her as well,” Ranko added.
”Sorry, Emily-chan. I don’t believe I can be of any assistance either,” Agewa said.
”Emily-oneechan, I’m sorry, but I don’t recognize it either,” the youngest girl chimed in.
”Hmm, I suppose it’s a dead end even with all of us together…” Emily sighed.
If this gathering of experts was stumped, then the situation seemed hopeless. Yet, there remained one final glimmer of hope. Every gaze in the room shifted toward the last person: the direct descendant of the Tokumoto line, Tokumoto Kaori-san.
”Regrettably, I have no idea. When I was placed under the guardianship of the Kokucho family, the vast majority of my family’s records were donated to them. If Agewa-san is unfamiliar with it, I certainly wouldn’t know any better. As for the rest, they were either destroyed, donated, or lost to time,” Kaori explained calmly.
Ah, so it truly is a complete stalemate. I’m sure every viewer across the country was thinking the exact same thing.
”But wouldn’t the Mizuno family—the ones who’ve been hunting the Tokumoto treasure for generations—know something?” someone suggested.
”The Mizuno family?” Emily repeated, intrigued.
Another ominous caption appeared alongside the narration.
[Descendant of the Mizuno Lineage and Historical Scholar: Professor Mizuno Chika of Mary Women’s University!!]
The scene transitioned to Professor Mizuno, who exchanged a firm handshake with Emily-san and Tokumoto-san. I see… so a descendant of the maternal line of the first Great Shogun of the Tokumoto family is now a scholar researching that very history. Professor Mizuno was actually moved to tears by the sight of the Six Houses Summit and the mysterious scroll. W-what’s the matter with her…?
”I am practically trembling with emotion. To think that the secrets of the Edo period, which have remained shrouded in mystery until now, might finally be brought to light…” Mizuno choked out.
Come to think of it, I remember reading on the Bulletin Board during the Taiga Drama broadcast that much of this specific era remains academically obscure, with little known beyond the basic historical milestones. Professor Mizuno donned her glasses and began scrutinizing the scroll with an intensity that bordered on the divine.
”First, regarding the text at the end… I will need to take this back to the university to cross-reference it with our archives for a thorough decoding. However, I can already identify the directional chart and the map preceding it!” Mizuno announced.
Wait, for real?! The room erupted into excitement at the professor’s words.
”This directional chart indicates it was drafted using the principles of Feng Shui. As for the mountain depicted in the map… just as I suspected, this has to be Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture! If we compare this against the historical topographic records held by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, we should be able to pinpoint a location nearly identical to this!!” Mizuno explained.
In the back of my mind, Emily-san’s promise—”I’ll give you a cut of the find”—replayed like a mantra. If I actually come into a massive fortune, then for the sake of the Evil God Aqua-sama… huff, huff. Overcome with excitement, I leaned in closer to the TV screen.
”And so, we reached out to the Geospatial Information Authority and secured the historical maps!” Emily announced.
A caption at the bottom of the screen read: [Prime Minister Habu, thank you for your ‘private’ cooperation using the full authority of the state!]. I see, so that’s what the year’s final public apology is going to be about… The brutal honesty of ‘Berry-Berry’ has completely backfired here. I had been wondering why Prime Minister Habu’s press conference was scheduled right after this show, but now every mystery has been solved.
”Emily-senpai, let’s give it our all and find that treasure!” Kanon said, sounding energized.
Kanon-san, who had been so reluctant at first, was suddenly highly motivated. Right, right… ‘Shumi the Maiden’ (definitely not a geek) probably lives for this kind of thing. As the team scoured the map with meticulous care, Kaede-san suddenly gasped.
”T-this terrain is…!” Kaede exclaimed.
”Kaede-senpai, did you discover something?!” the others asked, crowding around.
”Doesn’t this… look a bit like Aqua-kun’s [BEEP] [BEEP]?” Kaede asked with a blush.
Ahhh… the girls sighed in unison.
Suddenly, everyone was leaning forward for an entirely different reason. Hey! Let me see that more clearly!! Why are you putting a mosaic over the map!! I guarantee every single person watching this is more interested in that than the treasure right now!! Kotono-san, still focused on the map, narrowed her eyes in concentration.
”Ah, wait a second. Doesn’t this area over here look exactly like the spot marked on this map?” Kotono pointed out.
THAT’S IT!! they all shouted.
Could such a convenient miracle actually happen? Then again, with that Verification Team, I suppose anything is possible… Just as everyone’s guard was down, that ominous caption returned.
[Has the Location of the Buried Treasure Finally Been Found?!]
The scene shifted to the outdoors, where a woman—Kawaguchi-san—emerged from the tall grass. Oh, so this is the person who used to lead the original treasure-hunting expedition teams.
”It has been quite a while, everyone. I had hoped to lead the expedition again this time, but as you can see, age has finally caught up with me. Therefore, I have assembled a new team to carry on my legacy!” Kawaguchi announced.
The camera cut to a group of familiar faces decked out in full expedition gear.
[The Tenga Akira Expedition Team – Captain: Tenga Akira!!]
[Power-type Member & Hot-Blooded Vice-Captain: Shirogane Aqua!!]
[The Expedition’s Resident ‘Cutie’: Nekoyama Toa!!]
[The Success of This Comedy Expedition Rests Entirely on Your Shoulders: Mayuzumi Shintaro!!]
[Special Advisor: Kohina Yukari!!]
Mayuzumi-kun, please… hang in there… I prayed toward the screen while clutching my aching stomach.
”And so, we’ve arrived at Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture!” Aqua announced.
Typical Aqua-sama. His tone is so casual. I mean, it’s late December, the absolute busiest time of the year; what are you even doing out there…?
”So, the spot on the scroll’s map is right here?” Aqua asked.
”It would appear so,” Yukari confirmed.
Aqua-sama and Kohina Yukari-san peered intently at the copied map. Meanwhile, Tenga-senpai suddenly vanished into the nearby brush. You two! The Captain couldn’t wait and just went off on his own! It’s dangerous, so please keep a proper eye on him!
”Over here, everyone! I’ve found something!!” Tenga’s voice boomed.
Everyone scrambled in response to Tenga-senpai’s call. It seemed they had already hit pay dirt.
”Tenga-senpai, what is it?” Aqua asked as he ran.
”Come on, we’re going too!” Yukari urged.
”Tenga-senpai, I’m coming!” Toa shouted.
”Tenga-senpai, please stay where you are!” Shintaro cried out.
The four of them plunged into the dense thicket after Tenga-senpai. When they finally broke through, all four of them stood there with eyes wide in shock.
”Isn’t this the very well depicted in the map?” Tenga asked.
The mysterious well has appeared!! Since it seemed the entire nation was watching the same program, the phrase [Mysterious Well] immediately began trending on social media. To ensure the safety of the Tenga Akira Expedition as they explored the ancient well, Professor Mizuno had introduced them to a company specialized in treasure hunting.
[Mochizuki Heavy Machinery Joins the Fray!!]
The company’s president made a grand entrance atop a massive crane. I see… so they’ll attach a rope to the crane and lower themselves down to explore.
”I shall lead the way!!” Tenga declared boldly.
Tenga-senpai secured the rope around his waist and was the first to descend into the depths. However, an unfortunate accident struck. As Tenga-senpai reached the bottom, he lost his footing in a patch of slick mud and tumbled. Fortunately, his helmet protected him from a head injury, but he was left grimacing in obvious agony.
”Guh! Junior! Pull me up!!” Tenga shouted up the well.
”I’m pulling you up right now!!” Aqua yelled back.
You’d think they’d use the crane, but the ‘power-type’ Aqua-sama proceeded to haul Tenga-senpai up by the rope using nothing but his raw arm strength. Impressive as always, Aqua-sama.
”Tenga-senpai, are you alright?!” Aqua asked with concern.
”Ugh… my apologies, Junior. It seems I’ve sprained my ankle,” Tenga groaned.
Tenga-senpai was placed onto a stretcher and rushed toward a waiting ambulance. A quick look at the Bulletin Board and social media showed a deluge of comments expressing concern for Tenga-senpai’s well-being.
[Captain Tenga Akira: A Regrettable Exit Due to Injury!!]
No, no, no! We don’t need a caption like that right now!! I mean, doesn’t he have a live performance at the Song Battle tonight?! Is he going to be okay?!
”Junior… I must leave the rest in your hands! Kohina Yukari-san… please, look after the others!!” Tenga said solemnly.
”Leave everything to me! Tenga-senpai!!” Aqua promised.
”Tenga-kun, don’t worry about Aqua and the rest! You just focus on your recovery!!” Yukari added.
Aqua-sama and the others watched as the ambulance carrying Tenga-senpai drove away.
[A New Beginning! The Shirogane Aqua Expedition Team is Born!!]
I’m telling you, the narration is the least of our worries right now!! I mean, so this was the reason the show was split into two parts… Thus the Tenga Akira Expedition came to a close, and the new era of the Shirogane Aqua Expedition began.
—
Summary:
Chihiro Claire watches the New Year’s Eve TV specials, noticing Shirogane Aqua’s total dominance across all channels. A special expedition program featuring Tenga Akira and Aqua attempts to find the legendary Tokumoto Buried Treasure using a mysterious scroll. After a high-stakes meeting with the Six Houses descendants, the team locates a potential site at Mount Akagi. The expedition takes a dramatic turn when Tenga Akira is injured, leading to Aqua taking over the leadership for the second half of the special.
—
Character Insight:
This chapter highlights the massive social influence of Shirogane Aqua, whose presence is so ubiquitous that he literally fills every time slot on every channel. We also see the dynamic of the ‘Six Houses’ descendants, who, despite their prestigious backgrounds, are easily swept up in the chaos of variety television. Tenga Akira’s injury serves as a plot device to shift the narrative focus and heighten the stakes for the ‘live’ year-end events, while Chihiro Claire’s internal monologues provide a grounded, comedic perspective on the absurdity of the idol-dominated world.
—
Behind the Scene:
The ‘Tokumoto Buried Treasure’ is a parody of the real-life ‘Tokugawa Buried Treasure’ mystery that was a staple of Japanese variety TV specials for decades. The ‘People Who Absolutely Must Not Laugh’ segment is a direct reference to the famous Gaki no Tsukai New Year’s specials. The inclusion of Prime Minister Habu apologizing for using national authority for a variety show reflects the satirical take on power dynamics in this gender-reversed world.

Notes:
• Ken – Male. A rehabilitated man working in the mine. The fiancé of Akiyama Sachiko, the organizer of the party or one of the protagonist’s (Aqua’s) mother’s students (ikebana) appeared in Volume 2 Chapter 12. However, their engagement is not yet officially recognized, as the necessary documents have not been signed by all parties involved. Ken-kun behaves inappropriately during the event, attempting to flirt with Kanon and later becoming aggressive, even wielding a replica sword. His actions cause a disturbance, and he is eventually subdued and removed by the security team.
• Akimaru – Male. A ninja dog given to Kazami Rin as a birthday gift. He had brown fur and was very loyal to Rin. Their relationship was close, but he was tragically killed during Rin’s ninja training. His death deeply affected Rin.
