Volume 13 Chapter 425 Shirogane Aqua, To the Stars…

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

High school summer vacation had only just begun when we moved to Tanegashima for the shuttle launch.

 July 1st, clear skies…

Only eight hours remained until the rocket would leave the earth behind.

We spent the little time we had left with our families.

 ”Aqua-chan…”

I pulled my sobbing mother into a firm embrace.

”It is okay, Mom. I am just going to space for a little while. I will be back before you know it.”

(In my previous life, I never had a family. Until I reincarnated into this world, I lived without ever knowing what a mother was.

It might sound strange, but seeing her cry for my sake makes me feel inexplicably happy. Ah, I see. So this is what they call a mother’s love.)

 ”Come here, Lapis, Lazuli.”

 ””Onii-sama!””

I held them both gently, reminding them to make sure they finished their summer homework.

By the way, I had already finished mine. After all, I wanted to do nothing but play the moment I set foot back on Earth!

”Shitori-onee-chan, I am counting on you to look after A-san.”

”Yeah, I know. Leave it to me.”

I hugged Shitori-onee-chan as she trembled, trying to act strong despite the tears she was holding back.

With Kohina-senpai and I away from Beryl, the only one I could trust with A-san was Shitori-onee-chan, who had been there since the start.

”Mommy Mikuni… please look after Mom. Look after everyone.”

”Leave it to me, Aqua-kun. Just make sure you come back in one piece!”

Mommy Mikuni offered a firm fist-bump-a silent oath-as she comforted my mother.

She was the only one I could trust with the Shirogane household.

 ”Yui… I am going now.”

 ”Aa-sama, please be careful.”

I held Yui as tightly as I could.

(I have already granted Yui the legal rights to my reproductive cells¹ if anything should happen to me.

A man never knows when his time is up. Because I died so suddenly in my previous life, I wanted to be prepared. If I am gone, I can no longer help them with anything.)

Yui looked like she was about to break, but she nodded and accepted the weight of it.

”Ayana, I heard about the mission from Subaru-chan.”

It had started as an April Fool’s project-a one-time unit featuring the aces of every major girl group.

At Subaru-chan’s suggestion, it had evolved into a global movement, bringing together idols from every nation to sing for the world.

There was only one person capable of leading that project in an idol superpower like Japan, and that was Ayana.

”Aqua… leave things on the ground to us. We might not know how much we can do, but we are going to cheer everyone up just as much as you are!”

Ayana was as cool as ever. To me, she was a lover, a friend, and a rival who transcended gender.

”Ayana… let’s keep competing for the rest of our lives.”

”That is exactly what I want, Aqua. So you better come back.”

We shared a hug, a mutual prayer for each other’s success.

”Kotono… while I am gone, I am trusting you with the Shirogane Kingdom, Beryl, and Kotoha.”

”Yes, Aqua-san. Please leave it to me.”

I held Kotono gently. I wanted to hug Kotoha too, but the quarantine rules limited the room to ten people to prevent infection.

I’d heard they had a long discussion about who would be the ones to see me off.

Clad in my full pressure suit, I slowly pulled away from Kotono, who was also wearing protective gear.

 ”Aqua…”

I turned at the sound of Kanon’s voice.

”Kanon… thank you. For marrying me.”

I reached out for her as she looked ready to burst into tears.

”You idiot, Aqua… don’t say that now.”

”I am sorry. But I think you should say these things while you still can. Listen to me. Because of you, I became a father. I was happy to have married you.”

Kanon buried her face against my chest.

It was agonizing. The helmet and gloves were in the way; I couldn’t even wipe the tears from her eyes with my own fingers.

”That is why… I want to be with you more. I promise, Kanon. Wait for me. I am coming home to you. Because you are my home.”

 ”Aqua…”

We looked at each other and slowly pressed our helmets together.

(We cannot kiss, but surely this reaches her heart.)

I looked toward Emily, who was watching from nearby.

 ”Emily, take care of Kanon.”

”Aqua-sama, leave it to me. But you have to come back, okay? When this is over, we are all going to Ramen Takeko. My treat! I’ll buy everyone the cheapest plain ramen on the menu!”

I laughed. Usually, isn’t it the most expensive one?

Emily was truly one of a kind. I hugged her as well and left Kanon in her care.

She was the only person I would trust with Kanon. After all, they were so close it made me jealous.

”Oh, and Aqua-sama, look at this.”

Emily held up a tablet, showing Ai’s face as she applied her makeup.

I waved at her, even though she hadn’t noticed me yet. When she finally looked up, she froze.

’Eh? Ah, could it be that this is already broadcasting!? Emily-chan, you have to tell me these things sooner!!’

’Hakuryuu-sensei, are we connected? Yahoo! Aqua-kun! Everyone, come look!’

 ’Kokona-san, please wait for me!’

 ’Wait up, Kokona-chan!’

Following Hakuryuu-sensei, the faces of Kokona, Lisa, and Uruha appeared on the screen.

Emily had used the tablet so I could say goodbye to the girls who couldn’t come in person.

I spoke with Victoria-sama, the maids, Sugita-sensei, and my classmates.

Finally, a staff member entered the room.

 ”Shirogane Aqua-san, it is time.”

So the time had finally come. Fun moments really do end in an instant.

I handed the tablet back to Emily.

”Aqua-sama. Kaede-senpai is waiting outside. She said that even though she is usually ‘like that,’ she wanted to focus on her job today.”

”Haha, that is so like Kaede.”

That was why I fell in love with her. She took as much pride in her work as I did.

I wondered if she remembered her own words-that “Japan has Shirogane Aqua.”

I would live up to those words. As the idol, Shirogane Aqua.

”Thank you, everyone. I am just going for a little trip.”

I smiled, and they did their best to smile back.

 ””””””””””Safe travels!””””””””””

I left the room for decontamination. Suit off. More decontamination. Blood tests and final medical checks.

I had a quick breakfast and a briefing before trying to nap.

I couldn’t sleep, so I spent the time looking at photos of my children on my tablet.

Four hours until Japan’s first manned rocket launch.

One last decontamination. One last check from the doctor.

We gathered for the final meeting and moved to the dressing room.

”I never thought I would be wearing this for a real mission.”

I stared at the² Heaven’s Sword helmet in my locker.

³ Masked Driver, Heaven’s Sword.

The breakout hit for Beryl. The work that made me, Shintaro, Toa, and Tenga-senpai who we are today.

”Kenzaki… I swear on my life, I’ll be you until the day I die. So, lend your strength to me—no, to all of us. To protect this Earth that brought you into being, let’s fight together. My hero… our hero.”

I stripped down to my underwear and pulled on the compression suit.

At first, it hung loose and baggy, but as I turned the dial, the air hissed out. The fibers tightened, vacuum-sealing the material until it adhered perfectly to my skin.

I backed into the waiting reinforced plating; the armor plates snapped into place, magnetically locking onto the suit’s surface.

I checked my reflection in the mirror, grabbed my helmet from the locker, and swung the door shut.

”Feels a little nostalgic, doesn’t it?”

”Yeah. It feels like only yesterday we were wearing these for the cameras.”

”Right? Takes me back to the set.”

”Hmph! Which means, for us, this is just another day at the office!”

We looked at each other and shared a laugh.

Then, the heavy hitters arrived: Kohina-senpai in her Bicorn Beetle Power Suit, Prime Minister Habu, and Morikawa Momiji-san.

Looks like their side was locked and loaded too.

The technicians from the Space Development Agency began our final systems check.

Two hours and thirty minutes until the Big Takeoff.

The monitors in front of us flickered, revealing the face of Aqua’s professional associate back at Mission Control.

”Everyone… I won’t be tactless enough to ask if you’re sure about this. It’s always been this way, hasn’t it? If you say you’re going to do something, our job is just to make it happen and back you up. So, this time, go out there and do whatever the hell you want! To me, you’ll always be the ultimate idols! Good luck!!”

We sent back smiles and a chorus of “Good luck” to her.

(Thank you. For always putting up with our whims. Just wait—when we get back, we’re going to do something even more legendary.)

 ”Alright, everyone. Are you ready?”

We nodded to Instructor Takane Aki de de de de Space Experience X, who had been our shadow through every grueling hour of training.

”Then it’s time to move to the Big Takeoff. You’ve all worked so hard. Please… come back safe!!”

(The feeling is mutual. Thank you.)

We expressed our gratitude as the Self-Defense Force guards slowly hauled open the massive hangar doors.

The staff of the Agency and the employees from SEX Co. broke into thunderous applause, seeing us off with a standing ovation.

”Ah, the doors are opening!” Kaede said.

A red carpet stretched out before us, as grand as any world-class award ceremony.

Flanking the path to the rocket were rows of SDF officers in full dress uniform and members of the National Diet.

”Attention! To the brave souls heading into the Great Beyond—Salute!”

Prime Minister Habu stopped at the head of the line, returning the salute with perfect form.

Through the massive outdoor speakers, a recording of the Prime Minister’s speech from a week ago began to echo across the grounds.

”I speak to you today not as the Prime Minister of this nation, but as a fellow human being.”

We lined up abreast, stopping before the wall of press cameras.

Prime Minister Habu had joked that this photo would be on every front page tomorrow—and in every history textbook a century from now.

”Humanity… no, we as a species have made countless Great mistakes.”

My eyes met Kaede’s in the crowd.

(Oh, crap! I promised to look serious for the ‘historical record,’ but as the shutters clicked in unison, I couldn’t help it—I flashed her a wink. Man, I’m dead. My wink is going to be in the history books. Maybe I can ask for a retake when we get home.)

”But we have the power to learn from those mistakes. We have the power to grow!”

I spotted Agewa-san among the politicians and gave a small smile.

Prime Minister Habu had bypassed his own party to name Agewa, the leader of the opposition, as his proxy.

It was a gesture for the country: This was no time for petty squabbles.

”And that growth is exactly what is being threatened right now!!”

Further back, I saw the crowd of civilians—randomly selected citizens who had won the right to witness the launch.

”Mom! Look! It’s Kenzaki! Kenzaki is right there!!”

The girl’s innocent shout made us all beam.

To help her flustered mother, I gave the kid a giant thumbs-up.

”That’s right! I’m heading into space with my friends for a bit, so I’m counting on you to look after your mom for me!!”

 ”Okay! I promise!”

That seemed to break the ice. The suffocating tension evaporated, and smiles finally returned to everyone’s Nano faces.

”If this is a trial from the heavens, then we must overcome it together!!”

As we reached the shuttle’s base, I saw them—Kanon and the others, the idols we hadn’t seen yet, and everyone’s families.

(Sorry, guys. Sorry for making you worry.)

 We waved to them.

(We’re coming back. We’re definitely coming back.)

No one said it, but in that moment, our hearts were perfectly synchronized.

 ”So, please—lend them your strength!”

Kanoa, Anon, Akino, Kotoha, Satsuki, Tsukasa…

(God, I’m sorry. You’re right there and I can’t even hold you.)

I reached out my hand toward the children’s outstretched fingers.

(I’m going now. To protect the future you’re going to live in.)

”Now, let us fight! Let us seize our tomorrow!!”

At the launch pad, we turned one last time to wave.

The roar of the cheers and the clapping was deafening.

We saluted the flag and stepped onto the elevator.

 ”This way, please!!”

At the summit, technicians guided us into Japan’s first manned rocket: the Izanagi.

We took our seats, and the crew began strapping us in with heavy-duty harnesses.

Even I started to feel the nerves creeping in.

 One last systems check.

Ten minutes until the Space Mission begins.

Prime Minister Habu reached out and toggled the activation switch for the onboard AI, 3510.

 ”AI-3510: Online.”

It was the same startup sequence I’d seen a thousand times while filming Formula.

 It felt strangely comforting.

”Initiating self-destruct sequence. Ten, nine, eight, seven…”

”Whoa, whoa! Wait! The countdown is way too fast!!” Habu shouted.

I laughed as I watched the others scramble in a panic.

(Yeah. This is the stuff. This takes me back.)

”That was, of course, a joke. AI-3510 ‘The END’ current humor setting: 75%. Would you like to adjust? Range available: 75% to 100%.”

”What?! Seventy-five is the minimum?! Why did you even build that in… ugh, just leave it as is,” Habu replied.

The AI did its job; the tension in the cabin snapped.

Humor really is the ultimate survival tool.

But while the rest of us relaxed, Prime Minister Habu remained dead serious.

 (Prime Minister…? You okay?)

”Everyone… this is a bit late to say, but… if we crash, I’m sorry.”

”Prime Minister?!” we shouted in unison.

We looked at each other and just lost it.

(Seriously?! You’re saying that NOW? Ten minutes before launch with that stone-cold face?!)

Even the AI sounded a bit stunned.

”Don’t worry. We are here to ensure that does not happen. Final check: GO or NO-GO.”

The voice from Mission Control crackled over the comms.

 ”Propulsion Systems?”

 ”GO!”

 ”Retro-thrusters?”

 ”GO!”

 ”Flight Control?”

 ”GO!”

The flight controller ran through the sequence with surgical precision.

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and snapped my helmet into place.

 The others followed suit.

 Hiss-!

The sound of the pressure seal locking the helmet to the neck ring echoed in my ears.

As I powered up the HUD, my vision cleared, and the final countdown flickered into life.

”Countdown initiated. Sixty seconds to launch.”

 My fists clenched instinctively.

I glanced at Kohina-senpai next to me.

 She was looking right back.

Behind the tinted visors, we couldn’t see each other’s faces, but I didn’t need to.

(I can hear her voice in my head as clear as day: “Let’s do this!”)

 ”Thirty seconds.”

 I faced forward again.

There was no turning back now.

My mind was already past the atmosphere, focused entirely on what came next.

”Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five…”

A high-pitched whine rose from the engines.

The sound climbed higher and higher, and the Izanagi began to shudder beneath us.

The vibration became a violent roar.

(You’ve got to be kidding—we haven’t even moved yet and it’s this intense?!)

 ”Booster ignition!”

Gravity slammed into us like a physical wall, trying to pin us to the earth.

But the Izanagi—a masterpiece of human ingenuity—defied the very logic of the planet and tore itself away from the ground.

”Izanagi, we have liftoff. Congratulations, heroes. Godspeed. Good luck!”

We were still in the atmosphere, but the rocket was screaming toward the black, fighting gravity with everything it had.

 The G-force was punishing.

(If I hadn’t spent those weeks in the centrifuge, I would have blacked out in seconds.)

 ”Jettisoning boosters.”

The stage that had carried us this far fell away, tumbling back toward the world below.

 (Thanks for the lift.)

I stared straight ahead through the violent shaking.

(Go! Just a little further! Take us to the stars!!)

Then, after one final, massive jolt, the world went silent. The weight of the Earth vanished.

”Atmospheric exit confirmed. Retracting front window shutters.”

I looked out the glass. Pure, endless black.

My body felt light, as if I were about to drift away.

(We actually made it. We’re in space.)

”Retracting overhead shutters. Crew, look up.”

At the AI’s command, we all tilted our heads toward the ceiling viewports.

 ”Earth…”

I don’t know who said it. Maybe we all did.

We were paralyzed by the sheer beauty of it.

I’d seen the photos a million times, but they were lies compared to this.

The world we live on… it’s so breathtakingly beautiful.

I swallowed hard, moved by the sight, and looked back at the team.

”Toa, Shintaro, Tenga-senpai… we’re here. This is it. Our stage!”

They nodded, their eyes bright with resolve.

(Thank you, guys. For following me all the way out here.)

I turned back to the front, my heart pounding with a new fire.

Time for the first-ever concert in the void of space.

• Kohina – Kohina, a small-statured veteran actress and senior pilot of the Kohina family, wears a Bicorn Beetle Powered Suit over a wool belly-warmer gifted by Yukari, blending her theatrical gravitas with aerospace expertise. She mentors trainees, manages filming and logistics, and fiercely protects BERYL—sharp, blunt, and cynically protective, she rivals Shirogane Aqua while respecting true talent, her award-winning craft sparking social-media controversy. Suspected by Aqua of merely passing time after idol-level training, Kohina remains a focused, encouraging presence during missions, her quiet authority rooted in decades of disciplined craft.

• Mikuni – An actor and colleague of Kohina, noted for his enthusiastic support of Aqua and a motherly, doting look when watching his performances; he appears in high‑intensity drama scenes alongside Kohina and Reira.

• Shirogane – Shirogane Aqua, aka Master Aqua/Aqu‑tan, fronts idol group BERYL. He sports a striking face, sparkling eyes and a beige suit on broadcast. Easy‑going yet cool, he recently fathered Satsuki, is married to several women including Kanon, and is dubbed a ‘libido monster’ by Yukari. His ‘descending god’ aura shapes the group’s ethics amid scandal over his many wives. The Shirogane lineage, carried by Aqua, has become globally renowned in a skewed‑gender world through his unprecedented success as a male idol.

She’s Aqua’s lover, friend and rival, and a classmate who often feels jealous and flustered by Aqua’s affection. With short hair, school uniform, and a cherished ‘Aya‑nyan’ plushie, she’s a kind junior of Yukari, hailed as “the best.”

• Kotono – A mature, trusted member of Aqua’s inner circle, she oversees the Shirogane Kingdom and Beryl in Aqua’s absence. Known for providing nightgowns to the group, she appears in a protective suit during the final meeting to guard against infection.

• Kanon – Kanon-sama is a celebrated fashion icon, Internet Master, and idol-group member who serves as the chapter narrator. Married to Aqua and now a mother, she balances a cool, occasionally jealous demeanor with a tender side, evidenced by her emotional “helmet kiss” with him in the quarantine zone. Close to Emily, she observes the turmoil between Aqua and Kukuri with a mix of admiration and exasperation.

• Emily – Emily (Yukishiro Emily), graceful heir of the Yukishiro family and “Impression King” famed for flawless Kanon impressions, is heavily pregnant, co‑hosts variety shows with her husband Shirogane Aqua, serves as Kukuri’s “oneechan,” secretly works as a Pure‑White Press reporter stalking Aqua while sharing an intimate bond with Hakuryuu‑sensei; she also mediates between Aqua and distant supporters via tablet and promises a celebratory ramen.

• Ai – A pregnant idol associate who appears via live video feed on Emily’s tablet, caught mid-makeup application, she’s Hakuryuu-sensei—a beloved teacher and partner whose massive appetite contrasts with her polished idol persona, now aiding Aqua’s mission through remote support while balancing her pregnancy and public image.

• Hakuryuu – Silver-haired mentor and veteran Warrior of Light, known as Ai-sensei or Teacher Hakuryuu, is the reclusive author of banned fictional works whose quiet, pale awe at live performances reveals her art’s transcendent reach—yet she remains disconnected from modern life, visibly baffled by CAPTCHAs. As the matriarch of the Hakuryuu lineage, she coordinates remote communications for idols bidding Aqua farewell, embodying the gentle authority of a mentor whose creations inspire devoted female fans, even as she doubts their worth.

• Toa – A male BERYL member, classmate of Aqua, with a dual “cute‑cool” aura; he often winks at the camera and speaks in soft, loving tones. Once a shut‑in, he now serves as the straight‑man to Aqua’s antics, sharing a deep bond and instinctively following his lead.

The fiancé of Akiyama Sachiko, the organizer of the party or one of the protagonist’s (Aqua’s) mother’s students (ikebana) appeared in Volume 2 Chapter 12. However, their engagement is not yet officially recognized, as the necessary documents have not been signed by all parties involved. Ken-kun behaves inappropriately during the event, attempting to flirt with Kanon and later becoming aggressive, even wielding a replica sword.
