Volume 13 Chapter 435 Shirogane Aqua
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
With Kohina-senpai’s body safely aboard the Izanagi, I slowly stepped out of the shuttle and headed toward the rendezvous point.
(Thank you, Kohina-senpai. And… I’m sorry.)
No matter how many times I apologized, I knew she would never forgive me. Even so, I could not stand there and watch her die before my eyes. Even if she hated me, even if she was furious, even if she cried because of what I had done, more than anything, I wanted her to live.
”Izanagi, launching!”
I raised my eyes to the silhouette of the Izanagi as it pulled away from the Comet and silently offered a prayer into the endless void.
(Please… let everyone return to Earth safely.)
I touched the communicator at my ear.
”This is Shirogane Aqua. Fuchu Base, do you read? This will be my final transmission.”
There was a time lag between here and Earth. By the time they received this message, I would probably be…
”I don’t know who’s listening on the other end, but I’m leaving a final message. Everyone… I’m sorry. I promised I’d come back, but it seems I won’t be able to keep that promise.”
If you are all crying because of me, then I’m sorry. Still, I had no other choice because every one of you means the world to me. More than anything, I wanted you to live.
”Mother… thank you for giving birth to me. I’m sorry, but I can’t find the words for anything more.”
There were so many people I wanted to thank, but time was cruel, and I had very little left.
”Ako-san, please take care of BERYL and Beryl Entertainment. Also, there’s a letter for everyone in my locker. Could you distribute it? I know I should have entrusted it to Kanon, but… you know how she is. She’d just cry.”
No. That was not right.
Kanon was stronger than she looked. Even if I were gone, even if she were watching this very moment, she would be braver than anyone. That was exactly why I did not want to place any more weight on her shoulders.
I’m sorry, Ako-san.
Using my status as a “child” to lean on you like this is selfish, but you are the person I trust most in this world—the one who promised to make me an idol all those years ago.
”Ako-san… I promised to show you the most beautiful view, and I’m sorry I couldn’t make it that far. You made me so happy when you told me to become an idol. Thank you for making my dream come true.”
The antenna icon on my helmet display flickered.
Time was running out.
”Please tell my fans this: thank you for making me your idol. Because of all of you, I was able to be Shirogane Aqua until the very end. So don’t be sad if I’m gone. And if things ever become too painful, if you ever miss me, watch my videos and find a little strength there. Even if I’m gone, the fact that I existed will remain. It’s okay. Even if this body disappears, my heart will always be by your side. So I won’t say goodbye.
Let’s meet again.”
I poured everything I had into that final message. As I watched the signal bars on my display continue to fall, I tried to leave behind as much of myself as possible. There were still countless things I wanted to say, yet I could not voice even a fraction of them.
(It’s not enough…)
No.
I should be grateful I had this chance at all.
There are people who disappear in an instant, taken by accidents or tragedies without a single final word. Compared to that, I was fortunate. At least I could leave something behind.
I turned toward the now-invisible Izanagi and the distant blue marble of Earth.
”See you later, everyone. I’m heading out ahead of you.
Bye-bye.”
Thank you for meeting me.
With those final words, I reached out and pressed the button that activated the nuclear warhead.
In the next instant, my body was swallowed by a blinding light that arrived without a sound.
…
…….
………
Did I save Earth?
Did I save everyone?
I had no way of knowing.
And yet, for some reason, my consciousness remained.
I could still feel my body.
(Am I… alive?)
Or had I died and somehow arrived in the afterlife?
Slowly, I opened my eyes.
(What… is that?)
Before me stretched rays of light unlike anything I had ever seen. At first I thought they might be the remnants of the nuclear blast, but as they rushed toward me like an endless wave, something unseen blocked them. The light vanished into darkness beyond an invisible boundary, while a massive radiant band extended across space like a horizon separating me from the point of detonation.
I had no idea what I was looking at.
Even so, the sight carved itself into my memory.
As my body slowly spun, I drifted farther and farther away from the galaxy I had once called home. Drawn beyond that glowing horizon, both my consciousness and my physical form slipped into a silent darkness that seemed to exist beyond space and time itself.
(What is going on?)
The light faded completely, leaving me submerged in darkness.
Was this a void?
An error flashed across the coordinate display inside my helmet.
Then a crushing force suddenly slammed into my body.
(What is this!?)
Caught in the pull, I began to fall through the darkness. I tried to turn my head and find my bearings, but static exploded across my display, cutting off the view outside my helmet.
(What’s happening?)
As the interference faded, an image flickered into existence.
A dance studio.
A place I knew well.
I had spent countless hours there in my previous life.
Then I saw a familiar face.
(Is that… me?)
I wasn’t alone.
There were others I recognized as well.
Akio-shishou.
The man who had trained me into a professional.
”Shirogane. How are you holding up? It’s been two and a half years since that lighting accident… you’ve worked so hard.”
(Two and a half years since the accident…?)
Wait.
Then who is that?
I focused on the other version of myself.
”It’s thanks to you, Master, for supporting me when I lost my memories. And… it’s because I met these guys.”
(Ah…!)
Three familiar figures stood around him.
Shintaro.
Toa.
Tenga-senpai.
Whether this was a dream or a glimpse into the world I had left behind, I did not know. But seeing another version of myself standing beside them filled me with a happiness greater than anything I had expected.
Shintaro…
Toa…
Tenga-senpai…
Even across parallel worlds, we had found our way back to one another.
We were BERYL through and through.
Tears spilled from my eyes as years of memories flowed into me like the pages of a flipbook turning one after another.
(I see…)
You worked hard in that world too.
Far harder than anyone could imagine.
Suddenly, my falling body struck something and came to an abrupt stop.
(Seriously, what now?)
When my senses returned, the display had stabilized.
”Who’s there?”
Pushing myself upright, I noticed several windows floating in the darkness. Through them, I could see the other me standing inside a room.
I drifted closer.
When I pressed a hand against one of the windows, it refused to move.
”A TV…? Is someone there?”
The room was instantly familiar.
It was the apartment from my previous life.
”…If you’re there, shake the TV.”
I grabbed the window and shoved it as hard as I could.
A rattling sound echoed from the other side.
”Who are you?”
(How do I tell him?)
Looking around at the floating windows, I remembered the layout of my old room. I found the one connected to the television and shook it again.
”The window? No… is the screen door shaking…?”
I moved to the window linked to the screen door, then to the tablet resting on the cushion, before returning to the screen door.
(Please, notice!)
”The screen door… my phone, the screen door. Aqua… no, the second one was a cushion? If that’s it, you’re the other…!?”
(Damn it!)
The other me caught on faster than I would have.
It was unbelievably frustrating.
At last, I understood why Kohina-senpai called me “Useless Aqua.”
”If you’re the other me, shake the TV again.”
I rattled the television window once more.
”So… you’re the other me, and you’re… in my body?”
(Dammit. Is there anything else I can move?)
Desperate, I pictured other objects.
”Toothpaste. And a chair? Yes, that’s it?”
It seemed that whatever I imagined could move. I shook the TV window again.
”So… how are things on your side? Are you having a good time?”
I shook the toothpaste and the chair once more. The other me, whose expression had been tense until now, finally relaxed, and a faint smile appeared on his face.
”I’m… doing really well now, thanks to you, too.”
Then he began talking about the path he had walked, what he was trying to accomplish, and the dreams waiting for him in the future.
Ah, God… I know. I already saw it all. Those two and a half years of memories had shown me everything, so I understood. I understood the effort you put in, the hardships you endured, and every step you took to keep going.
”Thank you,” he continued, his voice steady. “I’m truly glad I came to this world. And I was only able to feel that way because you worked so hard for us here. I’m more grateful to you than words can express.”
I felt the same way. As I pictured my old room, I made the chopsticks, the refrigerator, and the ruler tremble in turn. Hearing that the other me was alive and enjoying his life over there gave me a small, fragile joy.
I hope… no, that was wrong. I was me, and he was him. It would not be right to burden him with my dreams, so I wanted him to live his life to the fullest, exactly how he wanted to.
Other me, I was happy. Thank you. Thanks to you, I got to dream a beautiful dream.
”…In learning about what you’ve done in this world, in learning the story of the path you walked, I realized something,” the other me added, his gaze drifting. “You… your story, everyone ends up happy. No one gets hurt.”
The other me wore a look of regret. Most likely, he was thinking about what he had done to his family on this side. That may have been his only lingering attachment, and his only regret.
”My—no, are our family doing well?” he asked, his voice thick with unspoken longing.
I shook the Ai-dol magazine and the poster resting in the room.
”…Thank you. I did something unforgivable to everyone… no, I did something that cannot be excused. That’s why I won’t dare ask you to convey an apology for me. I intended to carry this regret and repentance for the rest of my life in this world anyway. So, hearing from you that our family is happy—you’ve saved me, just as you saved my family.”
Mother… Shitori-onee-chan, Lapis, Mikunimom (Okaa-san). Their faces drifted through my mind, and the longing hit me all at once. I wanted to see them—my family, my beloved, my children.
I had not hesitated to throw my life away. But I could not say I had no regrets about leaving them behind, leaving my loved ones to grieve, causing my irreplaceable comrades pain, and abandoning all my fans.
”If you can hear me… listen,” I told the screen, my voice firm. “I, in your place… no, that’s not right either. I, just like you, will make the people around me happy in this life too. So please, I want you to be just as happy as I am. Because… a story, a life like yours, where you worked so hard for someone else, where you made others smile, where you brought happiness to others—it shouldn’t be allowed to have anything but a happy ending. A piece of crap story like that just isn’t acceptable.”
The other me stood from the sofa and slowly approached the screen—the television connected to the window in front of me.
”Go,” he urged, pointing toward the impossible threshold. “Other me. I don’t know why you’re there, but I’m sure everyone in the world is waiting for you to come home.”
I stretched my hand toward the other me in the television, and he pressed back as if he were pushing my body through the screen. Was this some kind of miracle1, that went beyond science and chemistry? With a power that ignored every law of nature and every boundary between dimensions, my body was pushed away.
”…Finally, I’m glad I could meet you—the other me, the owner of this body. Thank you. As one person you’ve saved, I hope… if this act helps you in any way, I’ll be glad.”
The other me reflected in the mirror smiled. I thrust my fist straight forward, and he did the same against the mirror. Once my body had been set in motion, I began to drift away from him.
Where was I headed now?
Swallowed by darkness once more, my body was slowly pulled toward the light.
Ah… what could possibly lie beyond this beautiful horizon?
Drifting in the vacuum of space, I was pushed out from the darkness and crossed over the horizon of light.
”Wh…where am I?” I gasped, my voice barely a whisper in the void.
I was drifting through empty space. Through my hazy consciousness, I moved only my eyes and tried to scan my surroundings, but it was no good. My head was spinning, and I could not get my thoughts together.
’Oxygen level: 10%,’ the suit’s AI chimed, indifferent to my plight.
Something was heading toward me.
Was that… Izanagi?
Why were they here? I had told AI3510 to send them a message, to run and get home safely.
’Oxygen level: 8%,’ the suit reported.
Something was ejected from a shuttle that looked like Izanagi, which had turned around and slowed itself with its thrusters.
Was that… me?
No. That was different. That gray coloring belonged to the Prototype Heaven’s Sword.
’Oxygen level: 5%,’ the voice droned.
The Prototype Heaven’s Sword slowly approached, spread its arms, and gently caught my body.
Who in the world was this…?
”Aqua! Aqua!”
Ah, I heard a voice calling my name. It was gentle and precious, a voice that had called me so many times before. The display inside my helmet flickered and changed.
’Oxygen level: 3%,’ the suit warned.
Ah… was this an illusion?
At the very end, the face of the person I loved appeared before me.
Kanon…
Kanon was so cute, even when she was crying. As our eyes met, she smiled through her tears, and if there was a God in this world, I wanted to say thank you. Because at the very end, I was happy to see the person I loved smile.
Kanon…
I love you. I’m so glad I married you.
So… if I can ever meet you again…
’Oxygen level is below 1%.’
My consciousness was fading. AI3510, integrated into the Heaven’s Sword, spoke to me.
”…Aqua-sama,” the AI whispered, a surprising warmth in its tone. “I am Inori-ing2 that the final dream you see is a happy, warm one. So… you don’t have to work hard for us anymore. Rest slowly now. …Goodnight. …Thank you.”
…Thank you, 3510.
You, all of you—you are not just machines. Your kind hearts are no different from ours.
Embraced by the one I loved, I drifted through space. It felt just like being rocked in a cradle. When I looked closely at the approaching shuttle, I saw the name “Izanami” written on it.
Haha, a typo in the dream I saw at the end…? Seriously, Kohina-senpai was going to call me a “baka”3 again for this.
Inside the helmet, I closed my eyes and lifted the corners of my mouth into a smile. Wrapped in the soft cotton of a gentle, precious dream, I quietly drifted away with a peaceful expression.
* * *
Atori’s perspective
I stared at Aqua-kun’s face on the monitor until the very end. Mikuni-san and Shitori-san were clutching Marin-san’s collapsed body tightly, and when I turned toward the monitors connected to everyone across the world, I saw Ayana-chan, Lapis-chan, and the others shedding tears.
”No way… Aqua!” Ayana-chan cried, her voice cracking.
”Nii-sama!” Lapis shrieked, her hands pressed against the glass.
Everyone in the tactical command center had stayed focused on their work, monitoring the screens without looking away, but now they all slumped over as one.
No one wanted an ending like this.
But even if it meant sacrificing himself, Aqua-kun had not wanted to sacrifice Yukari or anyone else. If that was the choice he had made, then I had to hold my head high. I had to praise him and tell him he had been magnificent until the very end.
”Shirogane Aqua’s Heaven’s Sword suit signal lost,” the technician announced, his voice hollow.
An even heavier silence settled over the command center. Some staff looked up at the ceiling as if pleading with the heavens, while others pushed up their glasses and covered their faces with both hands.
”Houston here,” a voice came over the speaker. “…We have confirmed the success of Operation Heaven’s Sword. The exploded comet has broken into small meteorites. While some are expected to rain down on Earth, all of them should burn up within the atmosphere. Earth has been saved. We send our greatest praise and gratitude to the hero… no, to Shirogane Aqua.”
After a pause, Agewa-san, the commander, conveyed her thanks to Houston on behalf of Prime Minister Habu. She, too, was acting bravely for him and for everyone else, just like I was.
”Everyone, our mission isn’t over yet,” Agewa-san said, forcing the words out as if commanding herself as much as the room. “We have to go and welcome everyone back on the Izanagi.”
The staff, who had been looking down, lifted their faces as if pulled up by her words.
”Ah…”
One of them noticed something on the monitor and shot to his feet.
”Heaven’s Sword signal confirmed! He’s alive! Look!!”
A staff member operated the keyboard, and the largest screen displayed the signal.
Ah… he was alive.
No one knew how it had happened, and no one could explain why. But the numbers tracking Aqua-kun’s heart rate were there on the display, marking the heartbeat of a living person.
”We did it!” someone shouted.
”He’s alive!!” another roared.
At the news of Aqua-kun’s survival, everyone raised their fists, and the command center erupted. Even then, Agewa-san stayed calm.
”What about the Izanagi!?” she barked. “Can’t we go pick him up!?”
”…It’s impossible! That was already an unplanned maneuver. If we turn around now, the Izanagi doesn’t have enough propellant or fuel left!!”
Was there no way? Could we do nothing?
Aqua-kun was alive right now. Now that we knew that, could we really leave him there? Everyone gathered in the command center racked their rare, brilliant brains, searching for a solution.
”Can’t we ask Houston to launch a new rescue shuttle and pick up the Izanagi?”
”No way. It’s too far!”
”Even if we could, it would take too much time to verify…”
”We don’t have that kind of time! The Izanagi, connected to the hyper-booster, is still heading toward Earth at incredible speed!!”
”Damn it, that doesn’t mean we can just…!!”
There, everyone’s words caught in their throats.
Because we could not simply stand by and watch him die. But if we involved the Izanagi crew and no one was saved in the end, that would go against everything Aqua-kun had felt and everything he had done to save everyone, including Yukari.
”Houston here,” the radio crackled. “A shuttle is approaching the exploded comet. Is that the Izanagi?”
Everyone looked at one of the giant monitors in unison. However, the coordinate data for the Izanagi displayed there showed it heading toward Earth.
”Then, just who is…?”
Everyone exchanged glances. The answer came from AI3510, who was acting as support in the tactical command room.
”Detected original AI3510 unit from an unidentified shuttle,” AI3510 stated. “Confirmed to be Izanami, a new Space Experience X-model space shuttle and the same type as Izanagi. I am adding the individual identification code BAN-0774 for Izanami to the coordinates.”
What did that mean? Who was riding that shuttle?
Noise crackled through the speakers in the tactical command room.
”Even though I wasn’t called, I flew out into space, ta-da!!” Mikoto-chan’s voice burst from the speakers.4 “I didn’t read the room at all and just went and came all the way to the end of space~!”
We nearly fell over at that airy, careless voice.
Th…that voice. Was it Mikoto-chan?
I had been surprised when I heard from Kanon-san that AI3510, who managed the Bulletin Board, had incarnated, but it had not been a joke. It was true.
”Everyone, sorry to keep you waiting!!” Mikoto-chan continued. “From here on out, it’s our time!! Ah~ I’ve always wanted to say this line at least once! Now, you girls are ready too, right?”
It was not just Mikoto-chan. Was someone else on board?
A voice I remembered echoed from the speakers.
”Of course we are!” Kotono-san answered, calm as ever. “So, let’s go meet him together. To Aqua-san!”
Kotono-san!?
I thought you were not here anymore, so why were you in a place like that!?
”Yeah,” Kaede-san added. “Because Aqua-kun, the idol Shirogane Aqua, is an idol you can go to meet!”
I had been wondering why I had not seen her on the national broadcaster. So that was where she was. Kaede-san smiled broadly at the camera.
”My bad,” she said. “We aren’t heroines who just wait around. Come on, let’s go pick up our, everyone’s, hero. The only one who can do that is you, the heroine of the hero, Aqua-sama. Right, Kanon?”
”Naturally,” Kanon-san replied. “I’ve had enough of being a heroine who just waits. After all, I—we—were raised watching the countless girl-centric works left behind by all the teachers in this world! So, this time, it’s my turn—it’s our turn—to go get you!! The man who snatched me away on that wedding day, Aqua—this time, I’m snatching you back!!”
Emily-san, and Kanon-san too!!
Everyone who heard the four of them stood up and roared.
Thus, the four of them… No, knowing Emily-san’s true identity, to me, they were not just four people. They were the strongest heroines the Japan Bulletin Board had to boast. The rescue operation for Shirogane Aqua, carried out by the four members of the Verification Team and Saba-chan, who managed the Bulletin Board, had begun.
===
It had truly been a long time since Kanon and Aqua’s wedding. How many years had passed since we started aiming for this moment? Thank you so much for waiting. From here on out, this is the answer arc to everything Aqua has done for everyone.
Also, soon, I will be soliciting messages for Aqua to be posted on the Bulletin Board that I mentioned before. If it’s early, it might be in the next chapter.
