Volume 13 Chapter 454 Shirogane Aqua, Great Hospital Escape

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

A week had passed since Kohina-senpai became extremely overprotective. I was steadily working through my rehab regimen.

”You can do it! Keep going!”

 ”Go! Go!”

Why were there so many spectators for just a rehab session? I felt a little embarrassed by the overenthusiastic support from everyone.

”Alright, kouhai! Fighting spirit! Summon your fighting spirit!!”

Tenga-senpai, headband on, was waving a BERYL flag like a maniac. The flag had messages from fans—get-well wishes and encouragement to cheer me on during rehab.

 ”Alright!”

I refocused and tackled the rehab routine. All so I could stand on stage with everyone again.

 ”Huff… puff…”

I’d definitely lost a lot of muscle compared to my prime. I’d been to space, and I’d been bedridden for a while—so it made sense. Time to rebuild from scratch.

As I caught my breath after finishing the routine, Kanon, who’d been doing her own rehab next to me, came over.

”Here, Aqua. Water,” she said, offering her bottle.

 ”Thanks, Kanon.”

I took the water she’d been drinking and gulped it down.

Then Kanon seemed to realize something, and her cheeks went pink.

 ”Wait… indirect kiss…”

Her eyes grew bright as she touched her lips.

Seeing that, I choked on the water I was drinking.

 ”Cough—hack—”

”Aqua! Are you okay!?” she cried out, rushing toward me.

 I signaled I was fine.

Damn, my fractured ribs still hurt. Stupid meteor! How dare you break my ribs! There’s no way a normal human could do that—it must’ve been a fragment from that explosion.

The nurses watching us started whispering to each other.

”Yo… did you see that?” one of them muttered.

 ”Yeah…”

”Can you believe it? She’s had his kid and she still blushes over an indirect kiss.”

”As expected of the First Wife. Her maiden level is on a whole different tier from us mob girls who immediately get all flustered.”

”Ugh! You low-class girls have no class!”

Phew. The pain in my chest finally subsided. I dried off with a towel and headed for the men’s shower room.

For the past week, Kohina-senpai had been glued to my side—overprotective to the max. But even she couldn’t follow me into the men’s shower.

I took a moment to relax by myself, then changed back into my hospital gown and stepped out. Kohina-senpai was waiting outside. She reached out her hand.

”Here. I’ll wash these with mine,” she said casually.

…Wash? The woman who broke her brand-new washing machine by using too much detergent?

Maybe this world really wasn’t the one I knew…

”Ah… thank you,” I said, handing her the bag with my sweaty clothes and underwear.

”Alright. You head back to your room and behave. Don’t do anything stupid and hurt yourself, got it?” she warned, pointing a finger at me.

”I know, I know,” I replied, waving her off.

I parted ways with Kohina-senpai as she headed toward the waiting room, and I started walking back to my hospital room.

Halfway there, I remembered something and stopped.

Ah… come to think of it, hadn’t Manager Matsumoto said she was hospitalized in the same building? I should go visit her.

I turned on my heel and headed for Manager Matsumoto’s room.

”Oh, this is the place,” I said to myself.

I knocked on the door. If he was asleep, I’d come back later.

 ”Come in,” came the reply.

 Ah, that’s Manager Matsumoto’s voice.

 I opened the door slowly.

 ”Excuse me.”

”Oh, Aqua-kun! Ow, ow, ow!” Manager Matsumoto exclaimed, trying to sit up and wincing in pain.

Manager Matsumoto, hospitalized with multiple fractures, tried to sit up. I hurried to her side.

”Don’t push yourself, Manager Matsumoto,” I said, placing a hand on her shoulder.

”Sorry, Aqua-kun…! My chronic fracture condition…!” she groaned, clutching her side.

Manager Matsumoto. A fracture is not a chronic condition. Regular people don’t break bones that often unless they’re athletes.

I gently helped her lie back down on the bed.

”Ugh, ugh… To think at my age, I’d be treated so gently by a young man…! Aqua-kun, I have no regrets left in this world. If I die, tell Director Hongou I said thank you,” she said dramatically, clutching her chest.

”Manager Matsumoto. Don’t worry—at your age, people don’t typically die from fractures. You’ll be fine,” I assured her, trying not to laugh.

Manager Matsumoto was always such a character.

I placed the souvenirs I’d bought at the hospital convenience store on the table.

”I saw they re-released the Beryl Man Choco Driver collab—the one you like—so I picked some up,” I said, sliding the pack toward her.

”Beryl Man Choco” was a popular children’s snack sold by Saint Sweets. Not that I was one to talk—I’d been buying them myself, mixing in with the kids at the candy aisle to collect the shiny stickers.

”Oh! Thanks, Aqua-kun! Let’s open them together and compare stickers. I’ve been craving something sweet!” she said, her eyes lighting up.

I tore open the Beryl Man Choco and handed one to Manager Matsumoto. She pulled out the sticker inside and her face lit up with surprise.

”Oh! A Heaven’s Sword sparkler!” she exclaimed.

”WHOOOOAAAAAA!” I shouted, practically leaping out of my chair.

Manager Matsumoto showed me the sticker. And it was the rarest one—the casual snack pose of Heaven’s Sword.

Crap. I might’ve just used up a lifetime’s worth of luck.

”Congratulations, Manager Matsumoto!” I said, beaming.

”Thanks, Aqua-kun! Come on, open yours!” she urged, practically bouncing in her bed.

I took a breath before opening the Beryl Man Choco. The luck was definitely flowing to me. This might be it!

”Please! Give me the Lewd Saint sticker—the version where her clothes are torn!” I prayed to the snack gods.

I pulled out the sticker from the bag and nearly passed out.

 ”Eh… the director’s extra appearance…”

Which episode was that again? There’s a scene where the director appears as an extra because they were short on staff. I never imagined they’d make a sticker out of such a rare scene. That’s Saint Sweets for you—their choices are too niche. Maybe one person would get excited about this sticker, but most kids would just look confused and ask, “Who’s that lady…?”

”Manager Matsumoto. Please take it. It’s not sparkly, but…” I offered, holding it out.

”Thanks, Aqua-kun. But this is probably a secret rare. I didn’t see any info about it online…” she said, examining it closely.

So this is a secret rare…

Come to think of it, I’d read online that there were two secret rares. I glanced over at Manager Matsumoto.

No way… the other one’s Manager Matsumoto herself? Nah, that’s too ridiculous. Right?

”So then… I should get going soon. Ow, ow, ow!” Manager Matsumoto said, trying to sit up again.

”Manager Matsumoto!? Where are you trying to go!?” I exclaimed, pushing her back down.

”Aqua-kun. Actually… today’s ‘It’s Okay to Laugh’—I’m the guest,” she said, her voice turning serious.

”What!? How did that happen!?” I asked, genuinely shocked.

I got the full story. Apparently, Manager Matsumoto had been scheduled to appear, but the day after the Meteorite impact, the broadcast was canceled. Then special programming took over, and the studio building needed repairs. The show’s restart kept getting delayed.

”Never expected to end up like this in the meantime. Ow, ow!” she said, wincing again.

”Don’t try to stand up, Manager Matsumoto!” I warned.

Manager Matsumoto grabbed my hand, her grip surprisingly firm.

”Aqua-kun… the kids are waiting for me. They’re excited to see me. I can’t let them down—I have to get to the studio!” she declared, gritting her teeth and trying to stand.

Watching her, I felt a warm feeling in my chest.

”With your body, there’s no way you can make it to the studio,” I said gently.

 ”But Aqua-kun, I…!” she protested.

I shook my head and glanced at the nearby wheelchair.

”Don’t worry, Manager Matsumoto. I’ll take you to the studio. I’ll get you to ‘It’s Okay to Laugh,’” I said firmly.

”Aqua-kun…! Damn it! I’m sorry! If only I hadn’t been so reckless and aggravated my chronic fracture condition!” she said, her voice cracking with emotion.

 …Don’t worry about it!

I forgot I had fractured ribs and slapped my chest—then doubled over in agony.

 ”A-Aqua-kun!?” Manager Matsumoto cried out.

”S-Sorry. I’m fine,” I wheezed, clutching my chest.

Damn that meteor! Crushing my ribs like this!

I grabbed my walking aid and managed to stand.

”Aqua-kun… I’m asking you again—can you do this?” Manager Matsumoto asked, her eyes meeting mine.

”Leave it to me, Manager Matsumoto!” I said, offering my fist.

 We bumped fists.

Alright, if that’s the plan, we’ve gotta move fast… With the broadcast time in mind, there wasn’t a second to waste. I managed to get Manager Matsumoto into the wheelchair.

 ”Alright, let’s move!” I said.

 ”Yes!” Manager Matsumoto replied.

I looked around the hallway. Good—no one’s here. I crept forward slowly, pushing the wheelchair. At the intersection, I spotted Kohina-senpai’s back.

”Aqua~? Where are you~?” her voice echoed down the hall.

Manager Matsumoto and I exchanged a silent look.

Phew. That was close. If the super-overprotective Kohina-senpai caught us, she’d definitely stop us.

”This hallway is dangerous…” I muttered.

”Yeah, let’s take a different route,” Manager Matsumoto agreed.

I turned to go back the way we came—and immediately bounced off someone’s chest.

”Oh, Aqua-kun. Are you okay?” a familiar voice asked.

 ”Ah… Inko-san… I mean, Sumire-san,” I said, recognizing the figure before me.

I pressed a finger to my lips, signaling her to be quiet. After confirming Kohina-senpai hadn’t noticed us, I explained the situation to Sumire-san with Manager Matsumoto.

”If that’s the case, leave it to me! I’ve dodged wild Kohina Yukari thousands of times. As an otome game pro, this is easy!” she declared confidently.

”Whoa~” Manager Matsumoto and I breathed in unison.

 What a reliable ally.

I handed Manager Matsumoto’s wheelchair to Sumire-san and grabbed my walking aid.

Then, with Sumire leading the way, we walked toward the hospital exit where the taxi stand was.

”You two, stop right there. I sense something.”

Following Sumire’s words, I stopped moving.

 ”It’s—it’s coming!”

 What on earth is coming?!

I peeked around the corner and looked at the place Sumire was watching carefully.

”Oh no, oh no! I was spacing out and ended up being late for rehab!”

Kaede, wearing her hospital clothes, was running as fast as she could while pulling her walker behind her.

Um, Kaede… do you really need that walker? I mean, if you can run like that, you should be able to leave the hospital by now… I thought about it for a moment, but then I stopped.

I realized it was a waste of time to think about it.

Just as I was about to leave, Sumire-san stopped me with her hand.

”Not yet! In an otome game, this is where the two-stage trap comes in.”

Just as she said, Kohina-senpai—who was by herself—came out a little later.

 W-wow… What a perfect prediction.

That’s Sumire-san for you. She’s not just a pro at otome games for nothing!!

”Both of you, now. Let’s go!”

Following Sumire-san’s words, I started moving again.

After that, I saw Kaede going back to get something she left behind, and then trying to go back to the rehab area. I ran into Kaede rushing because she was on the wrong floor, and I almost ran into Kohina-senpai more than ten times.

Ah… that otome game really was made to feel so real.

Only now do I realize just how talented the people who made that game were.

”Phew. Now that we’ve made it this far, all that’s left is to get out! When everyone in the lobby is looking the other way, we’ll dash right through on my signal!!”

Manager Matsumoto and I both nodded silently at Sumire’s words.

 ”Now!”

I walked out into the lobby at the same time as Sumire, who was pushing the wheelchair with Manager Matsumoto in it.

Just 400 meters to go… 300, 200—the finish line was right in front of us!

Just a moment of not paying attention. That could be bad.

Someone noticed the wheelchair Sumire was pushing.

”Oh, Manager Matsumoto! What are you doing?! You’re a critically ill patient, aren’t you?!”

Oh, yeah… Come to think of it, if it’s not allowed, it’s not allowed—even in a wheelchair.

The head nurse, who’s always so kind to me, came running over with a look like a demon on her face.

I guess that’s it, then. Just as I was about to give up, Sumire and Manager Matsumoto—who was in a wheelchair—stepped between me and the head nurse.

”Aqua-kun! Go to the ‘It’s Okay to Laugh’ studio in my place! All of Dai’s close friends who are looking forward to seeing me will be happy if Aqua-kun comes instead!!”

”Manager Matsumoto…. Ugh! Fine. In that case!”

I held the walking aid in my hand tightly and turned away from Manager Matsumoto and Sumire.

”Aqua-kun. Leave this to us! Go on!”

 ”Thank you, Sumire!”

Without looking back, I walked out of the hospital and got into a taxi that was waiting nearby.

I absolutely won’t let the two of them have died in vain!!

The taxi driver looked surprised when he saw my face in the mirror.

 ”Aqua-sama?!?”

”I’m sorry. Please take me to the studio in Shinjuku! Will you be able to get me there by a little past noon?!?”

Seeing the serious look on my face, the taxi driver’s face looked determined.

”Leave it to me! I’ve been preparing for just such a situation all along.”

Huh? What on earth did he prepare?

The driver pressed a button, and I was surprised by the feeling that the car was floating.

Wait, what…? This is kind of scary….

 I looked around nervously.

Then, something that looked like a wing came out from the back.

The driver took off the steering wheel and put on one that said “MAMA.”

Um… isn’t that the kind of thing you often see at racetracks or something?

Just as I was feeling confused, I was surprised by the feeling that the car was sinking.

W-what on earth is about to happen?!

”You’ve fastened your seatbelt, right? Alright then, here we go!!”

The driver pressed her foot down on the gas pedal.

The next moment, the tires spun, and as the car took off, it turned around and changed direction.

 Aaaaaaargh!

Hey, wait!? I was pressed against the seat by the force.

This is clearly dangerous driving… What kind of taxi company is this, anyway!?

I looked behind the driver’s seat.

”Saint Taxi”? I’ll make sure to remember that name so I can complain later.

The driver kept speeding up and got onto the highway.

”Hey, driver. Please follow the traffic rules!”

”Don’t worry. I’m definitely sticking to the speed limit!!”

 Huh, I wonder if that’s true….

My older sister was driving down the highway at an unbelievable speed.

Oh, wait a minute… I just noticed—aren’t there any cars on this road?

I felt something was wrong, but I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

”Aqua-sama. We’re a little short on time, so I’m going to take a shortcut.”

 ”Huh?”

 What’s a shortcut?!

The woman pressed a button on the panel.

So what’s that button you’ve been playing with this whole time?!

I heard a “whirring” sound as something opened up from under the seat I was sitting in.

The woman held the lever that appeared behind the Mission lever.

Hey, wait. I’ve seen the exact same thing on fighter jets!!

 ”Accelerating!”

After saying that, my sister pressed the button labeled “Nitro.”

With a sound like an explosion, the car sped up suddenly, causing bad pain to my broken ribs.

 ”Owwwwwwwwwwwwww! I’m… I’m gonna die~!?”

My sister sped up the car and, using a convenient slope, made a huge jump.

 ”Ah…”

My body floated gently into the air.

The woman held something that looked like a fighter jet’s control stick, took control of the vehicle firmly, and then landed.

 ”Gwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!”

My ribs, which were about to heal together, aaaaaaaaaaaah!

This is bad. At this rate, I’ll end up with broken bones that won’t heal, just like Manager Matsumoto!!

As I moved in pain in the back seat, the female driver looked quite happy.

”We cut the trip down quite a bit. Look, we’re almost there!”

Right in front of our destination, she pressed the brakes hard, bringing the taxi to a sudden stop.

Oh, I’m done for… My ribs are completely broken…

I paid the fare on my phone and thanked the taxi driver.

”Phew… That was worse than when I crashed my Comet. I seriously thought I was gonna die…”

I gave the taxi company a 1-star rating for “safe driving” on the form sent to my phone.

I want anyone planning to use Saint Taxi in the future to be careful.

Holding my walking aid, I walked forward unsteadily and made my way toward the visitor registration desk behind the studio.

 ”Oh, Aqua-sama?!?”

A female security guard I knew looked surprised when she saw me.

”Sorry. I’m here in place of Manager Matsumoto, who’s appearing on ‘It’s Okay to Laugh.’”

I wrote my name and group on the entry/exit log, and she let me into the building.

At the same time, the show’s producer—who had heard the situation from the security guard—came out to meet me.

 ”Aqua-kun!?”

Seeing me in such a bad state, the show’s producer looked surprised.

”Phew, phew… I’m totally fine. What about the show…?”

”Oh, well, Manager Matsumoto is actually about to appear on a segment right now.”

It seemed there was no time to change clothes, put on makeup, or fix my hair.

I gathered my courage and started walking toward the studio.

”Well then, I’ll go on like this.”

”W-Wait, A-are you okay? You don’t have to push yourself!”

I smiled at the show’s producer.

”Producer. There are lots of Dai’s close friends at the studio who are looking forward to seeing Manager Matsumoto. I can’t let them down! And to carry on Manager Matsumoto’s wishes—since he couldn’t make it here—I have to appear on the show!!”

”…Aqua-kun! Fine. I’ll take full responsibility, so do whatever you want!!”

With the help of the show’s producer, I went to the studio where Morita-san was waiting.

The staff members who saw me backstage all looked surprised, but they stayed professional and didn’t say anything.

I took my place in the wings and waited for Morita-san to call me.

”Um, so today’s guest is Manager Matsumoto, right? Wait a minute. Isn’t he supposed to have multiple fractures all over his body? Can he even be here?”

Loud laughter came from the audience.

That’s Morita-san for you. Come to think of it, I realize now that bringing him here in the first place was probably a bit too much.

”Uh, well… My producer has marked her name as ‘Maru,’ so it looks like she’s here. Well then, shall I bring her out? Today’s guest is Takako Matsumoto, the producer of Musk・de・Driver. Please come on in!”

I straightened my back, paused for a moment, and then walked out from the wings onto the stage.

Oh, no. I’m still holding my walker.

 ””””””””””Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!””””””””””

The audience gasped together when they saw my face.

Morita-san must have been surprised too—he froze with his mouth wide open.

”Hello, everyone. I’m Takako Matsumoto, producer of Musk・de・Driver!”

”No, no, no! If that’s the case, you should’ve tried to cover it up a little better!!”

I smiled at Morita-san’s quick reply.

I cleared my throat lightly, then straightened my posture with a serious face.

”To everyone who was looking forward to seeing Manager Matsumoto: She really tried her best to come and meet you all, but she couldn’t make it because her chronic fracture flared up again.”

Morita-san almost fell over laughing at my words.

At the same time, laughter could be heard from the audience.

”I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize on behalf of Manager Matsumoto. I’m truly sorry!”

I bowed my head with a serious face.

The audience, watching this, responded with warm clapping.

”Um, so, here’s the thing. I’m here as a stand-in for Producer Matsumoto—I’m Shirogane Aqua from BERYL, who played Kenzaki Souji in the previous title, *Heaven’s Sword*.”

When I did the *Okaitsu* pose, the audience erupted in cheers.

 ”Owwwwwwwwww!”

Having put too much pressure on my broken ribs, I bent over and made a face in pain.

 ”Aqua-kun. Are you really okay?”

”I’m fine. It’s just that I have a chronic rib fracture.”

My words drew laughter from the audience.

”I guess this is also the fault of the meteorite that shattered my ribs.”

 ”Oh, yeah.”

Huh? Everyone suddenly put on serious faces and acted like they didn’t know what was going on.

 Hey, everyone, what’s going on?

The audience, who had been laughing hard just a moment ago, all looked down at once, their shoulders shaking.

Morita-san watched this and kept smiling.

”Aqua-kun. Why don’t you sit down for now? It’s making me nervous seeing you standing there.”

 ”Okay. Thank you.”

With Morita-san’s help, I walked down the stairs from the stage and sat down in the guest section.

It got a little strange toward the end, but the opening was a success.

I gave it my all—for Manager Matsumoto, and to make Dai’s friends, who had been looking forward to seeing him, happy.

 Summary:

Aqua recovers in the hospital while fans cheer his rehab exercises, leading to an embarrassing indirect kiss moment with his first wife Kanon. After escaping Kohina-senpai’s overprotective watch, he visits Manager Matsumoto in his hospital room, where they bond over collectible snack stickers and Aqua pulls a bizarre director cameo card instead of the fanservice one he wanted. Manager Matsumoto reveals he’s scheduled to appear on a variety show and insists on going despite his injuries, so Aqua vows to help him escape—only to nearly get caught by Kohina-senpai before Sumire appears to assist them.

 —

 Trivia:

The chapter title is “Shirogane Aqua’s Great Hospital Escape,” indicating Aqua’s involvement in helping Manager Matsumoto escape the hospital.

The Meteorite impact is a major plot event that injured both Aqua and Manager Matsumoto and disrupted the variety show’s broadcast schedule.

Kohina-senpai broke her new washing machine by using too much detergent, establishing her as comically incompetent with household tasks despite being overprotective.

Saint Sweets is a parody of real-world confectionery companies, and their collectible sticker promotions mirror real Japanese snack culture.

The “Director’s extra appearance” sticker is a meta joke about the director of the series appearing as an unremarkable background character in the in-universe show.

Aqua nearly calls Sumire by the wrong name, “Inko-san,” suggesting either a nickname or a previous misidentification.

The “First Wife” title establishes Kanon’s rank within Aqua’s harem and her elevated status compared to “mob girls.”

There are two secret rare stickers in the Beryl Man Choco collection; Aqua suspects the other might feature Manager Matsumoto himself.

Sumire is established as an experienced “otome game pro” who has dodged Kohina-senpai thousands of times, framing their escape attempt as a video game challenge.
