Chapter 30 The Villainess

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”It hurts— It hurts—”

I was supposed to return to the academy today, yet I writhed in pain on my bed. Haruka’s magic eye burned, and I felt a pain as if my eye sockets were melting. The extreme stress and rejection caused my hair to fall out, and my body, adapted through the (Evolution) blessing, grew beast-like fur.

My hair was no longer human; its texture resembled a wolf’s. To adapt to Haruka’s magic eye, my body was gradually transforming from human to demon, a process that caused me immense pain. The fear of my body being rebuilt, cell by cell, left me restless.

I want to be free. This is too hard. I hate this. I’m sorry.

‘Hmph!’

I was so close to going mad, but I was jolted back to my senses.

 ”…:

 ”Hey, look at that…”

”Seriously? She fought a Rank One Calamity?”

”What if she brought back some weird disease?”

”She smells a bit like miasma.”

 ”Huh? What’s with her hair?”

”See? I told you she caught something weird.”

‘Nnnwww Homo-chan is still a virgin, so she has no sickness desuwa wwwww’

I was the center of attention the moment I returned to the academy. The incident involving a Rank One Calamity infiltrating the academy city was already the talk of the town, and it seemed they knew I was involved. My return to school with white hair only confirmed the rumors and drew even more attention. I was already somewhat infamous as a student with excellent grades but poor conduct. Many recognized me, and my changed appearance—white hair, altered irises, and a sickly look from stress, lack of sleep, and loss of appetite—only added to the shock. It seemed more rumors would fuel my already bad reputation.

 ”Move aside!”

‘Ah, that voice… (fear)’

As I dragged my heavy feet toward my classroom, a loud voice echoed through the hallway. In this academy, where most students are nobles’ children, arrogance based on social standing is common. I needed to leave before getting involved, especially since I was already drawing unwanted attention.

‘Listen, Reina. Don’t panic, don’t make a scene. Leave this place without drawing attention.’

 ”…”

It seems I’ve encountered someone I really shouldn’t have… a so-called ‘main character,’ perhaps? I don’t want to get caught up in any strange events or have myself or anyone else suffer any more misfortune. I have no desire to get involved.

”You are Reina Alcott~desuwa, aren’t you?”

‘Nnnwwwwww’

The owner of the voice stood directly in front of me, pushing people aside. Her flamboyant golden hair was styled in large rolls, and her modified uniform screamed for attention. The surrounding students’ reactions confirmed she was a high-ranking noble. Getting involved with her would only bring trouble.

‘This is Heidemarie, the villainess.’

”I am Heidemarie, the next head of the Edelgart Duke house~desuwa.”

‘She’s a martial arts type who challenges you to a duel whether you raise or lower her favor. Hot-blooded and troublesome, she’s best avoided. If you see her, run.’

Following the voice’s advice, I tried to slip past Heidemarie and leave.

 The atmosphere instantly changed.

‘Ignoring someone who speaks to you, like Reina just did, is a terrible move. It’s practically the same as picking a fight.’

It seems I failed. This tactic usually works, but not this time. Why didn’t the voice warn me earlier? What’s the point?

”…You have quite the nerve, don’t you.”

What should I do? No, I should run. Since I failed, I just need to disappear, as the voice advised—

‘Why? Because she’s the villainess.’

Before I could process the voice’s words, my hair was grabbed from behind, and my head was slammed against the wall.

”Do you know who you are ignoring?”

 ”Ugh, ah…”

She pulled my hair and pressed a fan against my exposed throat.

”You, a mere commoner, are getting far too bold~desuwa.”

‘What a waste of time.’

”Since we’re at it, I’ll teach you some manners.”

My head was repeatedly slammed against the wall, and I was struck with the metal fan. I wanted to fight back or run, but my body wouldn’t move.

‘There’s no helping it. Wait until she’s satisfied or someone intervenes.’

Even the voice, which hated wasting time, offered no escape from Heidemarie’s rampage.

‘One of Heidemarie’s blessings is “Bow, Common Folk.” It paralyzes anyone weaker than her, or anyone whose total stats don’t reach seventy percent of Heidemarie’s.’

That’s why no one is helping, just watching from afar… Or maybe they dislike me. I am rather unpleasant, after all.

‘Heidemarie’s level is seventy, with specs fitting a villainess. A pathetic creature like you, with a level cap of thirty-seven, stands no chance.’

I couldn’t open my eyes, but I heard snickers and jeers. They must be enjoying seeing the arrogant, unlikeable me getting beaten up. I wish this would end soon…

 ”You’re surprisingly sturdy, aren’t you~desuwa?”

Heidemarie sounded puzzled as she lifted my limp body by my hair.

 ”—Hey.”

Immediately after, a familiar voice reached my ears.

 ”—You, what are you doing?”

I slightly opened my swollen eyes.

‘The mediation event has started. Waiting for her to get bored naturally would’ve been better for the speedrun (vomits).’

Standing there was Cliff, his face unlike anything I’d seen before.
