Volume 2 Chapter 17 Approaching Ominous Shadows

October is almost over, and soon the streets decorated with Jack-o’-lanterns will disappear. The temperature is dropping, and it’s getting cold. Even though I’m looking for a job, I haven’t quit my part-time job yet.
Risa-san is still busy, and if I completely quit my part-time job, I would have too much free time. The upcoming cold season can make people feel down, which is a dangerous mental state. I really dislike this season.
”It’s especially cold today, and since it’s before payday, there aren’t many customers.”
”It’s just for a few days. Once it gets closer to Christmas, it will get busy again.”
”Ah, that’s right.”
There are no customers in the store. I was talking to the owner, who was polishing glasses and thinking about the Christmas menu.
(Huh…?)
A familiar woman is waving at me from the street facing the store’s terrace area.
(Is that the woman Risa-san hired as a housekeeper…?)
I haven’t even mentioned my part-time job to Risa-san. Yet, that woman is right in front of the store.
Even if it’s just a coincidence, a hidden place like this usually has many people passing by. This is creepy! Is she coming into the store?
”Oh, she’s cute. Shuu, do you know her?”
While I was frozen in place, the owner smiled and waved back.
”…I know her, but you should probably stay away.”
”What? Are you interested in her? She is definitely beautiful.”
The woman is still on the terrace, smiling and looking at us. She isn’t leaving anytime soon. Even though it’s just a part-time job, I’m in customer service. Plus, I’m working right now. I gave a polite smile, the kind I’ve practiced over 3 years.
”That’s not it. I have a girlfriend.”
Finally, the woman leaves. But the goosebumps on my skin don’t go away.
”Oh, really!? When did that happen?”
”Since around summer. But more importantly, that woman is really dangerous. If you get involved with her without being fully prepared, your life will get messed up. It might be fine when things are going well, but breaking up isn’t easy. You have to be ready to fight until one of you collapses…”
”Ah, so she’s the type of person they call ‘mentally unstable (menhera).’ Shuu, you know a lot about this.”
”I used to be close to someone like that.”
I nod at the owner’s words. Saying “used to be” is a lie. It’s normal to know a lot about someone like me. It’s like I’m introducing myself.
(But──what is up with that woman?)
If she’s the same type of person, she should know that invading my territory like this is the worst. It’s frustrating to have someone who cares about me taken away.
I’m being eaten away by the anxiety that I might be pushed out of the comfortable place I’ve finally found. It’s incredibly unpleasant.
