Volume 4 Chapter 1 Contacts
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I suddenly came to New York, and since I wasn’t dressed for winter, it was super cold.
Every year, I start wearing a coat around the end of December, but I left my coat at my cheap apartment and didn’t bring it to Risa-san’s place.
I thought I could just grab it during winter break, but that turned out to be a bad idea. The only warm stuff I had on me was a scarf and a thin gray cardigan I was wearing under my uniform.
As we drove through Manhattan, Risa-san noticed how much more decorated it was for Christmas than Japan. While looking out the taxi window, she suddenly asked, “Shuu, what do you want for a Christmas present?” After feeling the freezing temperatures outside the airport, I knew I couldn’t get her a good present, so I just said, “A warm coat.”
”Are you cold?”
”…Yeah, I’m cold. My body feels chilly.”
I tried to act like I wasn’t cold, but it was impossible. When Risa-san started to take off her coat, I told her to stop. I thought it wouldn’t be good for her to get cold since she’s pregnant.
Even though I don’t know much about women’s health, I understood that much. Instead, I held Risa-san’s hand.
Risa-san took care of all the hotel check-in stuff. We were staying at this hotel in Manhattan tonight to prepare for her interview tomorrow.
We planned to stay in the hotel for the rest of the week, and then next week, a friend of hers who knows the director of her old workplace would help her look for a house.
Once we got to our hotel room, I drank some hot coffee. Just half a day ago, I was in Japan getting ready for school, and now I was in a hotel in New York.
The view of Manhattan from the window stretched far, and of course, there were no buildings that looked like they belonged in Japan.
I started to feel a bit more calm and wondered if I was dreaming while lying in bed.
”I should contact people too.”
”Yeah, I emailed my guardians and my part-time job. Now I just need to reach out to school.”
At my part-time job, I thanked them for everything, told them I had to quit because I was suddenly going to America, apologized for that, and said I would visit when I got back to Japan.
I hadn’t really contacted my guardians much before living with Risa-san, but I told them, “My girlfriend is pregnant with my child, and we plan to get married soon,” and “I’ll be living with her in America for a few years while she becomes a specialist.”
I haven’t heard back from either of them yet.
I only have the phone number for school. I guess I’ll have to call them tonight. I doubt my homeroom teacher would believe I’m in America right now.
Even if they did believe me, I can imagine them asking a ton of questions about how this all happened. That sounds annoying and depressing. I kind of want to just ignore it and not contact anyone.
Knowing my homeroom teacher, I have a feeling they might call my smartphone.
