Volume 13 Chapter 23 Dust Wolf

*Kent’s Perspective
We’ve been signaling for rescue for about 30 minutes now, but no team has shown up. Huddled in our makeshift trench, we’ve been fending off waves of dust wolves with gunfire and magic.
”Lina, blast the ones sneaking around to the right with your magic! Annabella and Ines, reload your weapons!”
”Mr. Kent! A pack is closing in from the Left Hand side too──oh no, they’re starting to chew through the dirt wall! Can I use Divine Magic?”
I sent Feria and Ines’s contract dragons, Ludge and Flandre, back to base with the emergency alert as soon as we sent up the rescue signal.
We could have ridden them out of here, but leaving the dust wolves to multiply would be a disaster. So, we chose to thin their numbers as much as possible right here.
We were spotted by the dust wolf horde and quickly used magic to erect a dirt wall, creating an impromptu trench to defend against the hundreds of attacking beasts.
”Are you crazy? If you use Divine Magic in this cramped space, we’ll all end up with magic element intoxication in one shot! Just hold on, Black Bullet should be here to hunt them down soon!”
I instruct Feria to hold back on the Divine Magic and pull the trigger of my Explode Gunlance after finishing the reload.
Fwoooosh, bababababam, babam, bababam!
The muzzle flash lights up the dim trench.
Night was beginning to fall, and the surrounding area was being enveloped by darkness.
”Kent! I’m almost out of mana too… These dust wolves seem to have an abnormal resistance to magic… Even beginner-level spells won’t leave a scratch…”
Lina’s face was pale as she told me about the monster, her magic completely drained.
She had already unleashed a ton of magic, and even the Magic Stones she’d brought as backup were almost depleted, but the Dust Wolves barely thinned in number.
”Sir Kent… my magic is exhausted as well. I can’t spare any more for Lady Lina.”
Talia had been supplying Lina with her remaining magic, but now she too was drained, her face just as pale.
”Kent, I’ll act as a decoy. You need to fall back for now──it’s impossible to hold out any longer here.”
Milly volunteered to be the decoy next, but some of the Dust Wolves had already reached the walls, gnawing through in an attempt to get inside.
The sound of their gnawing echoed through the torchlit chamber.
”That’s a death wish for Milly. Those things are more trouble than a Beast Monster, right? Magic resistance, agility, physical strength, and organized group tactics──each one of those abilities outclasses normal monsters. They may only have teeth for attacks, but with those numbers, Milly won’t stand a chance.”
I fired at the Dust Wolf in front of me, but it kept coming, unfazed by the bullets.
It took dozens of shots before the Dust Wolf finally stopped moving.
This is bad… if we don’t push back, we might get overrun…
The sound of the Dust Wolves gnawing at the walls fueled my anxiety.
”Lord Kent! More Dust Wolves are closing in. We still can’t sense any allies!!”
From the direction Aurelia indicated, a new batch of Dust Wolves burst forth, charging straight for the torchlit chamber.
I quickly aimed and pulled the trigger.
Fwoooosh, bababababam, babam, bababam!
The bullet belt zipped up with momentum, bullets flying one after another, concentrating fire on the approaching Dust Wolves, turning them into mincemeat before they could get close.
”Sir Kent… this is our last clip of bullets… we don’t have any more ammunition.”
Before we holed up in the tower, I dumped all the clips I had in the inventory onto the floor, but it turns out the clip we just used was the very last one, Annabella reported.
”There’s no such thing as ‘all is lost’! If the reinforcements aren’t coming, then we make our own escape route!!”
Everyone’s faces went stiff at my words.
No time to explain──I immediately started preparing our escape.
I activated Creation of the Universe and began carving out an underground space.
Once it was big enough, I urged everyone to head down.
”Come on, move it! Hurry up!”
”Sir Kent! Amazing! As expected of my master. I thought you were conserving magic, but to have already planned an escape route… incredible! Kent is a genius!”
Milly pressed her boobs against me, joyfully hugging me tight.
The pressure on my face from her boobs felt nice, so I just let myself be held, enjoying the moment.
Meanwhile, everyone else finished moving to the lower room.
Once Milly and I descended last, I used Creation of the Universe to seal the surface above us.
This should buy us some time and give us a chance to escape.
”This should give us enough time to get away, right?”
But then it hit me──I’d forgotten something crucial.
”S-Sir Kent… I hate to say this, but… if we seal the gap above us, we won’t be able to breathe…”
””””Ah!?””””
Annabella’s words made everyone’s gaze swing to me all at once.
Damn it!
I was so focused on escaping, I forgot about the air!
This is bad, really bad!
We’re gonna suffocate if we don’t do something!
”Mr. Kent! It feels like the air is getting thin…”
”D-Don’t worry, I’ll dig an air hole right away! We’ll be okay! Just don’t panic, or we’ll waste more oxygen!”
”You’re the one who’s panicking the most, Mr. Kent! Get a grip!”
After Lina sent me flying with a kick, I dug deep into the ground with the *Creation of the Universe*, trying to secure a pocket of air.
I pierced the earth with Divine Magic, creating an air vent.
The hole finally broke through to the surface, letting in a rush of fresh air.
”Phew, I can breathe now… This’ll do.”
However, opening that air vent had allowed our scent to waft up.
The Dust Wolf sensed the opening and started to dig around the area.
”Oh no! Sir Kent! If we don’t do something, it’s gonna get in! Wait──it’s already here!!”
The Dust Wolf slipped through the air vent, lunging at the nearby Ines.
”What?! No way!! I can’t use my long weapon, so leave this to me!”
I quickly drew my dagger and lunged at the Dust Wolf’s throat as it charged.
The tough fur nearly dulled the blade, but I managed to pierce through, killing the beast before it could bite Ines.
”Kent, I’m in! Here, we can take it one-on-one, so it should be fine. Can you dig another air vent for me?”
Milly pulled out her dagger and urged me to create another escape route.
One-on-one, this Dust Wolf isn’t too tough. If it’s Milly, she should manage.
”Got it. I’ll open another one. Aurelia, Annabella, support me and Milly. Everyone else, guard Talia and Lina!”
As I opened a new air vent for Milly, the Dust Wolf quickly caught on and dove right in.
”Lady Miriallia! It’s here!!”
From the hole I made for Milly, the Dust Wolf erupted, drooling as it charged.
Just as Milly drew her dagger, the creature’s head and body were severed, rolling onto the ground.
”One on its own isn’t much. It’s just a slightly tough and fast wolf.”
”Sir Kent!! Don’t let your guard down!”
Lost in Milly’s divine skills, I barely noticed Annabella telling me the Dust Wolf was coming next.
”Yo!”
Regaining my focus, I drew my dagger──and with a swift move, I unsheathed my sword, ready for Dual Wielding.
The Dust Wolf charging in locked eyes with mine, snarling like it meant business.
I parried its claws with the dagger, then drove my sword into its underbelly──thin fur or not, it was a quick death.
”Next one’s coming!!”
No time to breathe; the next Dust Wolf leaps straight at me.
I toss my dagger into its mouth, pinning it at the entrance, then grab the Dragunov from my inventory──still loaded──and fire a round right into its skull.
The beast’s head explodes, limbs twitching as they hit the ground in a bloody, jerky mess.
”For a Kent, you’re pretty damn cool… maybe you really can do this.”
