*Kent’s perspective
After finishing the recon of the ‘Abyss Gate’ to another world, I returned to Felward Fortress and immediately gathered the military brass, my mother-in-law, and the leaders of the various Monster Hunter groups for a strategy meeting on dealing with ‘another world monsters.’
”Today, I called you all here to discuss what we should do about the ‘Abyss Gate’ that’s spewing out ‘another world monsters.’ Let’s share our ideas freely.”
As I scanned the faces gathered in the hall, I saw all sorts of schemes swirling. Some were grinning at the thought of making a fortune off the abundant ‘another world monsters,’ while others were worried about an increase in Beast Monsters.
Lina stepped up onto a platform set in the middle of the room where everyone was gathered.
”First, let me share what I know about the ‘another world monsters’ with everyone.”
The noisy hall gradually fell silent.
Lina’s assistants, Feria and Ines, placed the remains of an ‘another world monster’ and parts of the production facility from the gate where everyone could see.
The remains of the ‘another world monster’ were medium-sized like a silverfish, similar to the Silver Mantis I first encountered in this world.
Another part was a large, silver arm that seemed to have grown out of the ground where the ‘another world monster’ was assembled.
”Okay, so first off──Silver Mantis. Once Valentina and I started breaking it down, we found something wild. Those ‘another world monsters’? We thought they were alive, but nope──turns out, they’re machines. Deep inside their bodies, there’s some kinda control chip. Most of the time, it melts in their body fluids when the monster dies, but this time, we caught one alive and drained it real slow. We dug around, and bam──we found the chip. Then we stuck it in a meat puppet, just to see. Surprise of the century: it turned out to be a guy from the ancient Fairy civilization. Seriously, this is a huge academic discovery.”
Lina wanted a living ‘another world monster’ for recon, so she went and caught this Silver Mantis.
After that, we pulled an all-nighter analyzing it all the way up to today, for this meeting.
”…So, wait. ‘Another world monsters’ are actually machines, and ancient people too──nya?”
Manon, still looking confused with a giant question mark over her head, turned to ask Lina.
Even looking around the hall, you could see more than half the people had the same question mark face.
”…That’s right. According to what we got out of him, the ancient people ditched their bodies so they could fight some unknown enemy. They put copies of themselves in those chips──stuck them in what we call meat puppets, and kept on fighting. Looks like they lost anyway… And after that, these ‘another world monsters’ were born. People didn’t know it, but the thing that wiped out that civilization? That’s what made these monsters.”
Lina tapped a knuckle against the busted-up Silver Mantis.
”Huh… So even the meat puppets were machines under the skin. Gotta say, they really did the job, though…”
All the women in the hall turned and stared right at me (my word), hard.
That look was way too much, so I quick glanced off in a totally different direction.
Nope, not doing this.
…But I always thought only female-type meat puppets showed up… Did they end up sending in the women to fight too, once things got really bad…?
I couldn’t stop thinking about that pink-haired meat doll stashed away in my inventory.
”Ugh! Forget that idiot Kent for a second and let’s get back on track. So, about the ‘another world monster’──it’s basically a bio-machine, got it? Our new recon found out that the crack in space and time from the another world gate──Abyss Gate, whatever──has gotten bigger. Turns out, all the new buildings over there were built just to make these ‘another world monsters.’ The main bodies might be made inside the Abyss Gate itself, but the monsters keep flooding out, getting put together, so their numbers are exploding. We managed to blow up their factory this time, but on yesterday’s recon, we saw they already started fixing it, and security around the place got a whole lot tougher.”
”I, Ludmilla, went and checked on that herself, you know.”
