Volume 14 Chapter 51 Defeat
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Facing the monstrous creatures with their overwhelming power, we were steadily losing our physical strength and magic. Our ability to fight as a cohesive unit was fading. As if mocking us, the creatures rapidly healed their wounds, returning to their previous state with no signs of damage.
”Kent… if this keeps up, we’re going to lose… It’s frustrating, but we can’t win.”
Even Milly, usually unyielding, showed signs of fatigue, her face marked with injuries. The others were in a similar state, exhausted and wounded, beginning to feel the weight of defeat.
”Don’t give up! There’s got to be a way to take these things down!”
”But their attacks aren’t working, and they heal instantly. How can we win against that?”
Milly, a seasoned Monster Hunter, was uncharacteristically voicing her doubts. Even she, who always faced strength head-on, seemed unable to maintain her will to fight. I desperately searched for a breakthrough, observing the creatures closely.
These beings possess overwhelming combat ability and recovery, making them nearly perfect monsters. Do they even have weaknesses? I’ve confirmed they can withstand even divine magic and recover as if nothing happened. How can we defeat such opponents?
While I probed for weaknesses, the creatures, having finished healing, began attacking our group.
”Damn it, they’ve already recovered.”
One creature attacked Annabella as she tried to heal her wounds with a potion. The bottle fell, shattering and spreading its liquid across the floor. Annabella managed to block the creature’s claws with her shield, repelling the attack. At that moment, the creature’s body—boasting overwhelming combat power—began to change. For some reason, it started trembling, and black smoke leaked from various parts of its body.
”What’s going on? Annabella, did you do something?”
”No, I just defended against the attack normally.”
Annabella, equally confused, shook her head. The creature, now acting strangely, froze as if paralyzed. The suddenness left everyone suspicious and bewildered.
”Kent! Look at its feet!”
Lina suddenly urged me to look at the creature’s feet.
”Why?”
”Just do it! Isn’t that why it can’t move?”
When I looked, I saw a puddle of liquid from Annabella’s shattered potion beneath the creature’s feet.
No way! Are these things weak to healing? We’ve got nothing to lose—it’s worth a try!
I pulled a remaining potion from my pouch and threw it at the immobilized creature. The liquid splashed onto its body, sizzling as it melted its bright scales. As expected, these creatures take damage from healing items.
”Healing potions work! They take damage from them! Splash two-handed potions on them before they heal!”
”R-Really? I’ve never heard of creatures like this.”
Milly, surprised to hear healing potions dealt damage, realized they were our only option.
Immediately, the group threw their potions at the immobilized creature. Coated in the liquid, it released more black smoke and trembled violently. Sensing its ally’s danger, another creature charged toward us to block further attacks.
”Everyone, sorry. Just hold it off a little longer. I’ll test if Healing Magic works!”
”Got it! Ines, we’ll stop that one!”
”Ah! Yes.”
Feria and Ines stood before the charging creature, weapons in hand, intertwining their axes to block its rush. The creature struggled wildly but was firmly restrained. With its movements halted, I approached, activated Healing Magic, and touched its body. The green light caused it to screech, emitting black smoke like the potion’s liquid.
”It’s working! It’s working!”
”Mr. Kent, this one’s rampaging—it might break free soon!”
Feria warned she couldn’t hold it much longer. I poured all my remaining magic into Advanced-level Healing Magic, striking the creature.
The healing accumulated as damage, causing the creature to writhe and thrash. Attempting to escape the pain, it spread its wings and attacked me. Flamil, Carlamia, Lina, and others erected a barrier to protect me.
”Woooooooh!!”
I converted all my remaining magic into Healing Magic, pouring it into the creature. Lana, Talia, Aurelia, and Milly, who had subdued another creature, touched it and used their last bits of magic to inflict damage with Healing Magic.
The creature, vomiting thick black smoke and writhing, gradually developed cracks across its body. Its once-hard scales turned to sand and crumbled. Its wings lost strength and scattered on the floor. Eventually, the two struggling creatures shuddered violently, emitted a dazzling light, and disintegrated into pieces.
”Did we do it…?”
”Looks like we did…”
The light faded, leaving only the creatures’ sandy remains on the floor. We had won, but our items, strength, and magic were exhausted, leaving us barely able to stand.
