I’m, Kentaro Horikawa.
I’m 35 and a single former company employee.
Why “former,” you ask? Well, I got swallowed up by the rough waves of society, and the ship that was my company sank, making me lose my status as a “company employee.” So now, I’m just sitting around with way too much free time.
The world keeps pressuring me with “Get a job!” but since I have the house my late parents left me and some savings I earned from working, I decided to take a grown-up vacation.
But, since I usually keep my social interactions to a minimum, I don’t have any friends to hang out with, let alone a girlfriend.
So, I figured I’d kill some time by playing an online game for the first time in a while, browsing through some sites.
I mean, since I’m just gonna be playing solo anyway, it’s better to go for a dead game, right?
I used to play online games occasionally when I was a company employee, but my basic play style was free-to-play solo.
I was okay with just having a bit of fun.
It’s not like I had low social skills or anything, but I just always ended up playing alone.
While I was thinking about that and searching through sites, I stumbled upon one called ‘Hunter Life.’ It’s a site for an online game that’s impressively dead.
The posts on the community board stopped 2 years ago, and it seems like the development hit a wall since it never made it to official service and is stuck in open beta with no updates.
According to the official site, the game seems to mix elements from the hugely popular handheld game “Monster H*nter” with magic and skills, adding in some “Gal Game” elements from “Love Plus.” Even more surprising, it has an 18+ rating…
and reading the description, it turns out you can even get a little frisky in the game.
Seriously, what kind of game lets you do that online? Oh, but I think there might have been something like that back in the day…
I definitely wasn’t drawn in just because it had that feature, but my interest was piqued, so I jumped into the game without thoroughly reading the manual.
I quickly installed the game on my PC and launched the client, which brought me to the character creation screen.
The CG graphics of the characters were incredibly detailed, and I was worried if my PC could handle it, but so far it seems to be running smoothly.
I started the character creation process, beginning with choosing a race.
There were several options: True Demon, Black Dragon, Asura, Garuda, Rakshasa, Dream Demon (Succubus/Incubus), Ghost, and Majin.
Each race had its own unique traits described in a pop-up, but since this was just a test character, I went with the average-ability Majin.
Next was the appearance settings, which were already set by default and couldn’t be changed.
The character’s face looked a bit like mine, but I didn’t mind and quickly confirmed it.
For the name, I went with “Kento,” a simple katakana version of my own name, since this was just a test character.
I set the age to 15. No particular reason, but at 15, I can get away with some chuunibyou-like behavior, right?
Finally, it was time to choose the initial skills.
It seemed like I had to spin a slot and press a button to decide.
There were various skills, including combat skills like swordsmanship and gunplay, and crafting skills like weapon manufacturing and negotiation.
I could choose 4 initial skills, so I just clicked randomly, figuring I’d create a more serious character once I got a feel for the game.
The 4 skills I ended up with were “Handsome Guy,” “Protective Instinct,” “Woman Killer,” and “Sexual Prowess.” Handsome Guy and Protective Instinct made sense, but the last 2, Woman Killer and Sexual Prowess, seemed like they were pushing me towards a harem or gigolo playstyle.
I felt there was some ulterior motive behind these skills, but I gave in to the temptation and clicked the confirmation button.

I created this character, but honestly, it looks like a joke character.
A solo play without combat or crafting skills might be considered a challenge run.
With these thoughts in mind, I finished setting up my character and clicked the [Confirm] button, only to be greeted by a warning on the screen.
[Are you sure you want to start the game with this character? YES/NO]
Of course, I hit YES! Bring on the challenges! Hell yeah!.
[Are you absolutely sure? YES/NO]
YES! YES! YES! Let’s get this started! Whoa, hold on, I’m getting ahead of myself here.
[Then, we will summon you to the otherworld Grimoire]
Huh? Summon? Isn’t that just logging in? As the monitor started glowing, I blacked out.
