Volume 1 Chapter 38 The Marriage Situation Of The Grimoire
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Wait! Lina is actually from a pretty good family!
I was surprised to hear about the Dorman family’s background from Annabella.
I wondered if it was really necessary to bring Lana in, even if it meant going against the magic Guild, but it felt wrong to leave her alone since she is a Carrier.
So, what should I do?
”How about hiring her as a dedicated Healer? Mr. Kent has the rare [red] trait, and I think she would be a valuable asset to the magic Guild. Plus, once we hire her, she’s ours.”
Feria suggested making Lana my personal doctor.
”A dedicated Healer, huh… Now that you mention it, Kent does have the [red] trait. Both my dad and mom have the rare [red] trait, and they would definitely want to connect with Kent, who is engaged to Blackdagger family’s Elder Sister Milly, even if it means offering both daughters as concubines.”
It seems like Lina is considering persuading her parents to offer Lana and herself as my concubines.
I can’t shake the feeling that this is getting out of hand.
”Lina, it doesn’t have to be concubines… but isn’t Lana afraid of men?”
”You idiot! If you hire the daughter of the Dorman family as a personal doctor and then end up getting all hot and bothered, what do you think will happen?”
”What will happen?”
”The next day, you’ll definitely be found dead under mysterious circumstances.”
…Seriously? Is that going to be a curse or some instant death magic or something?
I’m already in a situation with Lina, but if her parents find out, I might end up as a cold corpse the next day.
Feeling anxious, I cautiously asked Lina.
”Lina, I’ve already been with you… is that really a big problem?”
”W-Wait! It’s okay because I’m doing this for atonement! Since I hurt Kent, who is a noble candidate, Papa and Mama can’t complain. But my sister is different; she’s the hope of the Dorman family, unlike me. If I get involved halfway, I don’t think my parents will stay quiet.”
Lina seems to be saying that since her parents have higher expectations for her sister Lana, they would be more accepting if she has a certain status as a concubine rather than hiring her as a personal doctor.
But, even though I’m technically Milly’s owner (master), I’m still just a jobless Majin guy.
Is there really any benefit in marrying their daughter to someone like me?
”But, Lina. I’m just a Majin guy. Is there any benefit in marrying your sister to someone like that?”
I throw my sudden doubts at Lina.
”If it were just a noble, I don’t think they’d even consider it, but the fact that you have [red] is the biggest advantage. If either I or my sister have a child with Kent, there’s a chance we could have a [red] child. The reality is that there are hardly any descendants of [red] people, so maybe the breeding ability is low.”
Oh, a child for me… I had been careless about it, but if we’re doing what we’re doing, it could happen.
I’m shocked at my thoughtless actions now.
”Does card color get inherited? My parents were black, but… I’m blue.”
Annabella questions Lina’s statement.
”In Annabella’s case, it might be a case of skipping a generation. There’s also the possibility of skipping a generation. It’s possible that someone within three degrees of kin might have had [blue]. Statistically speaking, the chances of inheriting a color are as follows:
- There’s over a 50% chance of inheriting a color from one of the parents.
- The chances drop to about 40% when inheriting from grandparents or siblings.
- The likelihood of having a color none of the three degrees of kin have is less than 10%.
So, if I were to have a child with Kent, the odds of the child being [red] or [blue] are over 50%.”
”If we can have a rare [red] child, then for Ms. Lina’s parents, it would be a huge success, right? They might even agree to send your sister as a concubine to increase the chances.”
Annabella is nodding in agreement as she listens to Lina’s story.
”Wait, am I being treated like a stud horse? Well, putting my treatment aside, are there really parents who would marry off their daughter just to have her bear children? Is that the norm in Grimoire?”
I voiced my doubts.
”Is it really common here (Grimoire) for parents to offer their daughters just for the sake of card color?”
”Hey, it’s not just ‘for the sake of it!’ What do you mean by that! I told you before, card color indicates potential ability. If a [purple] is born, the whole clan would be overjoyed and raise it with great care. They would invest all their wealth into it. The reason is that if that [purple] grows up and takes an important position, the clan will be secure. So, a [red] that surpasses [purple] is like a national treasure.”
”A national treasure… isn’t that a bit much?”
I started to feel like I was being treated like some rare creature.
”You might not know this because you’re a Lost One, but in this world (Grimoire), there are clear distinctions based on card color. Even if you’re Noble or Royal, if your card color is [black], you’re looked down upon. It’s common for marriages to be decided based on card color. Being [red] means you’re in high demand!”
”Oh, speaking of which, when I got married, my husband’s parents really asked if I would marry their son. Since he was [green], my parents would have strongly opposed it if they were alive.”
Annabella added her own marriage experience to Lina’s story.
Putting it all together, it seems that as a [red] holder, I am treated like a natural monument protected at the national level, so Lina’s parents would definitely want to send Lana as a concubine.
”So, should I go greet Lina’s parents and say I want to welcome both of you as concubines?”
”That’s true, but since you still haven’t taken the Blackdagger name, I think our parents will say to let us stay at Elder Sister Milly’s house as apprentices. And then, if Kent marries Elder Sister Milly, I think we’ll go through the process of taking her as a concubine.”
Lina is predicting her parents’ intentions.
”If Lina’s parents are okay with that, don’t we need to make arrangements with the clinic and the magic Guild? Both Lina and Lana are working, right?”
”I can continue my research at this house, and if Big Sister Lana is sent to the clinic as the dedicated doctor for [Red], there won’t be any problems.”
It seems that both the clinic and the magic Guild would be happy to connect with me through the two of them.
The issue of welcoming Lana into the house seems mostly settled.
”So, Sir Kent. Are you going to welcome Lana?”
Annabella presses for a decision.
”Ah, yeah… I will welcome her. I need to go greet Lina and Lana parents tomorrow. I want Milly and Lina to come with me, is that okay?”
”Uh, yeah, that’s fine, Kent.”
”Make sure to greet them properly! My parents can be pretty strict!”
Milly’s face still looks gloomy, but Lina seems determined to persuade or talk her parents into it.
”Then Feria and I will go greet the magic Guild and the clinic.”
”Ah, I’m sorry, but I’ll leave that to you.”
I asked Annabella and Feria to handle the arrangements with the magic Guild and the clinic.
Ah, it feels like this has become a big deal.
But since it’s a seed I’ve sown, there’s no helping it.
And so, I decided to welcome Lana as a working member of the household.
