Volume 2 Chapter 41 Magician And Healer
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The day after returning from the expedition was designated as a rest day, so I decided to let everyone take a break.
During breakfast, Milly distributed the rewards from the expedition, which came to about 6 to 12 silver coins per person.
The difference in the rewards was due to the number of times each person participated in the subjugation.
Lana, who didn’t participate even once, received the minimum amount of 6 silver coins, while those who participated in all received 12 silver coins.
Of course, I participated in all the subjugations, so I received 12 silver coins.
In total, I earned 12 silver coins, which is about 120,000.
”Kent, don’t waste too much. Also, just so everyone knows, we’ve decided to focus on hunting monsters around the southern part of Abyss Vena starting tomorrow.”
”Hunting nearby, huh? Got it!”
Feria replied cheerfully.
The other members also seemed to agree with Milly’s plan.

After breakfast, I caught Lina as she was about to return to her room.
I had been afraid of being told I had no talent, but I finally felt ready to take the magic aptitude test that Lina had recommended multiple times.
Having acquired a new job during the expedition, I could definitely feel my abilities improving, which made me eager to acquire more jobs.
I need to become stronger.
If I had been stronger back then, Feria wouldn’t have gotten hurt (being attacked by the boar).
So, I decided to acquire any job that had potential; even small things can add up.
”Lina… I think I want to take the magic aptitude test. If I have the aptitude for magic, I can acquire the Magician job, right?”
”K-Kent. What’s wrong! Do you have a fever? You want to take that magic aptitude test that you were so vague about!”
Lina placed her hand on my forehead.
I don’t know why, but she seems really surprised.
Was I looking that reluctant…?
”So, if I have the aptitude in the exam, I can acquire the Magician job, right?”
Since Lina didn’t answer, I asked the same question again.
”Y-yes. In the magic aptitude test, you’ll be shown the magic composition for torch, and if you can read it and activate the magic, you’ll officially join the ranks of Magicians. For those without aptitude, the magic composition is just a bunch of unreadable characters.”
It seems that if you can read the magic composition in the aptitude test, you can acquire the Magician job.
”Is the magic aptitude test being held today?”
”Yes, you can apply at the Magician Guild reception, and they will conduct it at any time. Are you taking it today?”
”Yeah, I’m going to go take it right now.”
”Wait, I’ll go with you, so please wait until I’m ready. You can’t go ahead without me!”
I watched as Lina hurriedly ran toward her room.
As I was seeing Lina off, I felt someone pull my arm from behind.
When I turned around, it was Lana standing there.
”Mr. Kent, you were just talking about the magic aptitude test with Lina, right?”
”Yeah, I was. I think I’m going to try taking it today.”
”If you have the aptitude for magic, why not try the Healer certification test as well?”
”What kind of test is that?”
”It’s similar to the magic aptitude test. If you can read the magic composition for First Aid, which is the basis of Healing Magic, and activate the magic, you can acquire the Healer job. It’s unreadable for those without aptitude in Healing Magic.”
I thought that all magic was of the same type and that if I had aptitude in the magic aptitude test, I could use all types of magic, but it seems that’s not the case.
At least, it has become clear that Healing Magic requires a different type of aptitude.
”By the way, do Barrier Magic, Support Magic, Body Enhancement Magic, and Stealth Magic require different aptitudes?”
”Hmm, Lina knows more about that, but I think the only ones that require a different type of aptitude are Mental Magic, Healing Magic, and Barrier Magic. I believe other magic can be handled with the Magician aptitude.”
So, if I have the aptitudes for both Magician and Healer, I should be able to acquire almost all types of magic.
I understood that only Mental Magic requires an independent type of aptitude.
Speaking of which, Milly has acquired Mental Magic, so I might ask her about it.
”Lana, thank you. Is the Healer certification exam held at the healing center?”
”Yes, if I go with you, we can do it right away. Believe it or not, I’m quite important at the healing center.”
Lana looked at my face with sparkling eyes.
”Then, I’ll come with you and if I have the aptitude for magic, we’ll head straight to the healing center.”
”Yes! I’ll join you. Please wait a moment while I change. I don’t want to be left behind!”
”Ah, yes, yes. I understand.”
Lana ran towards her room just like Lina did.
I wonder if they weren’t told not to run in the hallway because it could be dangerous if they fell.
While waiting for Lina and Lana, I decided to visit Milly.
Milly, who was in the reception room, looked somewhat tired.
Perhaps the stress from the expedition until yesterday had caught up with her.
”What’s wrong, Kent? What are your plans for today? You shouldn’t disturb Ms. Annabella or the other girls too much. I can keep you company anytime.”
Milly smiled brightly, trying to hide her tired expression.
”Oh, no. I’m planning to go to the Magician Guild now and take the magic aptitude test.”
”What! You finally decided to take it? Why is Kent, who always looked so reluctant, suddenly going for it?”
”After acquiring a few jobs during the expedition, I started to feel stronger, so I thought I might as well take any job I have a chance of acquiring. First, I wanted to check if I have the aptitude for Magician.”
Milly, who heard my story, was holding a handkerchief to her eyes.
It seems she is crying.
Why?
Why are you crying, Ms. Milly?
”Ugh, Kent… I never thought you would say something so admirable…”
”No, during this expedition, I realized that as the vice leader of the Hunting Group, I need to become stronger. If I don’t, the people I care about will get hurt.”
”It’s okay, Kent. That’s our mission. To protect your life with our own. It’s the iron rule of the Crimson Bride.”
Still, I chose the path to strengthen myself so that such things wouldn’t happen.
”I appreciate the dedication of you and the others, but if you all were to die, I would be left with wounds too deep to recover from. So, I decided to spare no effort in becoming a man who can protect you.”
I wanted to be someone who could protect the people in my hands.
For now, that includes the members of the Crimson Bride and the Red Valkyrie.
Even at this point, the number of people I have to protect is already overwhelming, but I believe that if I become stronger, my ability to protect them will grow as well.
”Kent… as expected of my master. I will help you train with my life on the line.”
Since the conversation had veered off in an unexpected direction, I decided to ask about the qualifications needed to use Mental Magic, which was my original goal.
”Milly, changing the subject, what qualifications do you need to acquire Mental Magic? Lana said she didn’t really understand, so I came to ask you since you have it.”
Milly answered my question with a serious expression.
”Unfortunately, Kent, you can’t acquire it. Mental Magic requires a special qualification, or rather…”
Milly was being vague with her words.
”Huh? Is it absolutely impossible?”
”Yes, Mental Magic is a magic exclusive to Dream Demons, and those who are not Dream Demons have no qualifications at all. So, you can’t acquire it, Kent.”
Wow, I learned that there are race-specific magics as well.
What should I do if it’s said to be race-specific?
I can’t become a Dream Demon at this point.
”I see, so it was race-specific magic. Well, there’s nothing that can be done then.”
*Clatter!*
When it was revealed that I couldn’t acquire Mental Magic, the door to the reception room opened, and Lina and Lana burst in.
”Kent! Why is my sister here too? You said you would go with me!”
Lina, wearing a black dress, looked at me, panting.
*Glaring*
Yikes, that’s scary.
It’s even scarier since she’s not wearing the magic absorption pendant right now.
”Lina! Don’t glare! Mr. Kent is scared. I’m accompanying Mr. Kent to take the Healer certification exam if he has the potential for Magician.”
Lana was wearing a white dress.
”That’s right. I’m just accompanying Lana. If I don’t have the potential, I’ll just come back. I won’t make any detours; I’ll go straight back to my room and hide.”
”Kent… your statements are too negative. You just said you want to get stronger. If it’s you, I’m sure you have potential.”
Milly was encouraging me after my negative remarks.
”If Milly says so, then I must have potential. Alright, Lina, Lana, let’s get going.”
”Kent, eek, what are you doing?”
”Mr. Kent, ah! You can’t grab there!”
I picked up Lina and Lana under my arms and headed out of the mansion towards the Magician Guild.
* * *
Upon arriving at the church-like building of the Magician Guild and applying for the magic aptitude test at the reception, the two daughters of the Dorman family, who were my companions, prompted their father, Cefiro, to come out and greet us.
We were led to the reception room of the Magician Guild and sat down on the sofa.
”Well, Lord Kent. Have you finally come to terms with taking the magic aptitude test… haha.”
Cefiro squinted his eyes even more and laughed.
At this point, it’s hard to tell if it’s his eyes or just part of his wrinkles.
”Since Lina and Lana have been pleading with me every night to take the magic aptitude test, I’ve finally come to pay my dues.”
”Wha──? We don’t say that every day! Kent, don’t tell papa weird things!”
”Oh, but he has. I told Mr. Kent that he has talent for magic, and it’s a waste not to use it.”
Cefiro seems pleased as he looks at his 2 daughters.
”It seems both of you are being well taken care of by Lord Kent. Perhaps next year we might see the face of a grandchild.”
”That’s right. Both of them are quite greedy, so I think we can let Mr. Cefiro hold his first grandchild next year.”
”That would be delightful, Mr. Kent. Lina, Lana, continue to serve Lord Kent diligently.”
Both of them nodded vigorously at Cefiro’s words.
”By the way, where will the magic aptitude test be held?”
”We will conduct it here. Normally, it would be held in a classroom, but since Lord Kent is my son-in-law, you get special treatment.”
Cefiro took out a rolled-up piece of paper from his pocket and placed it on the desk in front of me.
The rolled paper placed before me is probably the paper with the magic composition written on it.
”I feel a bit nervous.”
”Please try to relax. I believe you’ve heard from Lina that if you read the characters written on that paper aloud and activate the magic, you will pass the test and acquire the Magician job.”
”Yes, I understand.”
”Now, please unfold that rolled-up paper.”
