”It must have blended into the darkness it created, probably somewhere near Kent.”
Hearing Milly’s warning, I felt a foul breath behind me.
I hurriedly turned around and raised my shield.
Slash!
My raised shield was scratched by claws.
The body of the Shade Dog that had melted into the darkness was so indistinct that I couldn’t even see its outline, no matter how hard I strained my eyes.
”Sir Kent! Are you okay? Kyaaaaaah!”
Bang!
It seems Annabella, trapped in the fog with me, was attacked.
”Annabella! Are you alright? Where are you?”
”Sir Kent… I’m fine. It’s just a scratch…”
Following her voice, I walked in that direction until I eventually bumped into something.
It was Annabella’s body.
”Eek! Sir Kent?”
”Ah, it’s me.”
As soon as I joined up with Annabella, I felt a rush of wind in front of me.
Crash!
The claws of the shade dog slashed down, crumpling Golerg’s armor.
If it had been just regular leather armor, it would have been torn to shreds.
Cold sweat from fear and panic streamed down my face.
”Kent! I’m going to shoot a flash to cancel out the fog, so close your eyes!”
Milly spoke to me from outside the fog.
I heard Milly’s words and immediately closed my eyes.
”Gather the magic elements! Become light and shine! Flash”
A strong light struck my tightly closed eyelids.
When I opened my eyes, the thick darkness surrounding me cleared away, and the Shade Dog appeared.
Glancing at the armor that had been attacked, I saw deep claw marks on the right shoulder guard and chest area, revealing the armor underneath.
I felt its strength once again.
”You exhale another breath!? Bea won’t let you do it a second time!”
Beatrice slips under the feet of the Shade Dog, who is about to spit out the black mist again, and stabs its mouth with her spear, sewing it shut.
Nice, Beatrice.
Grrrrrr!!
The Shade Dog rampages around, dripping mist that it couldn’t spit out because it had been sewn shut from the corners of its mouth.
”Ahhh!”
Beatrice, who had let go of her spear, was thrown my way.
Thud!
I caught Beatrice, and the Shade Dog rushed towards me with its sunken eyes at a terrifying speed.
”You can’t get close to Sir Kent!”
Annabella, surrounded by a pale light, activated the [Immovable Stance] skill and stood in front of me.
Boom!
”Ugh! Aaaah!”
The Shade Dog’s charge crushed and damaged Annabella’s large shield.
Annabella somehow managed to withstand the charge, but was pinned down by the Shade Dog’s strength.
Thinking it was dangerous, I immediately activated the Flash Thrust skill and aimed the fast spear at the Shade Dog’s face.
The Shade Dog, which had been aiming for Annabella’s neck, caught my spear that was thrust at its face from the side.
”No way! Seriously?!”
The Shade Dog easily caught and blocked my high-speed thrust.
Spitting out the tip it had caught, the Shade Dog changed its target to me and leaped.
I couldn’t withstand its charge and was knocked to the ground.
”Ugh, get away from me!”
I desperately kicked with my legs, but the Shade Dog opened its mouth with a face devoid of pain, trying to tear into my throat.
”Noooooo! Kent!!! Run awayyy!”
Milly was crying and telling me to run away.
Sorry Milly, I thought I was too powerful… I’d be better off if you could at least let the other members escape.
At that moment, an arrow pierced the sunken eye of the Shade Dog, which was about to bite off my throat.
”Sir Kent! Run now-nya”
The Shade Dog, hit by Manon’s arrow, went crazy with pain and began to rampage without any reason.
Somehow, I crawled out and saw Milly emitting a visible dark light… no, a light like a fighting spirit.
As soon as Milly moved, her body blurred and I had to do my best to follow the afterimage.
CRACK!
Milly rushed in at high speed and struck the Shade Dog’s left front leg with the handle of her dagger, making a dull sound as its leg bent in a direction that was biologically impossible.
The Shade Dog, with its prideful front leg broken, managed to stand on 3 legs, but this time Milly came up behind it and shattered its right hind leg.
Crack!
Still, Milly didn’t stop breaking the Shade Dog’s legs.
Snap!
Smash!
I felt a chill of fear at how swiftly she broke all 4 of its legs.
This was because, when I caught a glimpse of Milly’s face moving at that furious speed, she wore a half-smile.
”Milly! I think that’s enough… with its legs crushed, it won’t be able to chase us.
Ignoring my words, Milly continued to chop off the legs of the immobile, crumpled Shade Dog one by one.
With each leg that was cut off, the Shade Dog let out a chilling, soul-piercing scream.
Grrruuu… whimper…
Everyone watched the scene with pale faces.
After finishing off all of its legs, Milly simply sliced through the neck of the mortally wounded Shade Dog as if it were just a garnish.
With that, Milly collapsed to the ground as if she had exhausted all her strength.
I hurried over and scooped Milly up in my arms.
”K-Kent… you’re safe… what happened to the Shade Dog?”
”That’s because Milly got rid of it. Don’t you remember?”
”Me? I don’t remember anything… I just don’t remember anything after I saw Kent get killed by the Shade Dog right in front of me…”
Was Milly unconscious when she was performing that horrific task with a smile on her face?
Is she pretending to have no memory so that I won’t hate her?
I was shown a glimpse of Milly’s strength as an S-Class Hunter.
”My lord! Are you safe? This is Lady Mirialia. Are you injured?”
Akebus saw Milly collapse and was being held by me, and asked me in concern.
”Village head Akebus, it’s okay. I just used a little too much magic, so I should recover after resting for a while.”
”I see, that’s good to hear.”
Akebus felt relieved to hear that Milly and the rest of us only had minor injuries.
”So, it seems the Black Dogs ran away. How many did we take down?”
”I can say at least 50.”
After the leader Shade Dogs were brutally killed by Milly, the Black Dogs, having lost their leader, curled up their tails and fled back to the forest area from where they came.
Therefore, Akebus was taking down as many of the fleeing Black Dogs as he could.
Scattered along the way to the forest were the corpses of the mountain dogs that had become the Black Dogs.
”We won!”
”Kent… we did it!”
”We have won.”
Nearby, Godard’s men were raising victory cheers.
The other members, besides Milly, were joining in the victory cheers as well.
Godard’s men only had a few sustaining minor injuries, and they were already being healed by Talia’s Healing Magic.
Although we won, it was ultimately thanks to Milly’s efforts that we managed to achieve it.
The battle against the Shade Dogs delivered a shocking blow to my ego, which was inflated after leveling up my jobs and skills a bit.
I feel like if I don’t get more jobs and skills, I’ll be killed and eaten alive someday.
As I was looking at the destroyed armor, my hands were covered in sweat even though it wasn’t hot.
”I need to get stronger…”
I muttered to myself as I watched everyone shout in victory.
