Volume 5 Chapter 3 Simulated Combat
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I had come to the grassy plains outside Estfort with the members of Crimson Bride for my afternoon Combat Training with Mr. Clayd, which had become a daily routine.
”Hey! Don’t just laze around! You won’t survive with half-hearted abilities!”
Multiple Fire Arrows floated above Clayd’s raised hand.
It looked like there were about a hundred of them.
All of them had been activated solely to target me.
It’s just a mock battle, right…? Clayd said he wouldn’t kill me…
A wave of anxiety washed over me, wondering if I could block them all given their sheer number.
Even if he said the power was suppressed, the opponent was the kingdom’s top Magician, and I had already experienced the agony of being hit multiple times.
”Wait…”
Ignoring my words, Clayd swung his hand down.
The hundred Fire Arrows, activated by multiple magics, roared and charged at me all at once.
With this many, he definitely intends to kill me… He plans to brush it off as an accident during training…
Not wanting to die, I decided to cast the Stealth Magic I had recently learned.
”Gathered magic element! Become a mirror and reveal my reflection! ‘Phantom!’”
A second version of me, made from magic element, burst forth from my body.
About 20 Fire Arrows latched onto the Phantom created from my magic and chased after it.
The clone, taking on 20 Fire Arrows, turned into black mist and vanished.
Twenty, huh… I thought it would draw away about half… As expected of Clayd…
Although I was somewhat disappointed by the Phantom’s effectiveness, there was no time to dwell on it with 80 arrows still approaching.
My next move was a new magic I had recently learned.
”Gathered magic element! Become the arrows of interception and protect me! ‘Interceptor Arrow!’”
The moment I activated it, a blue bar indicating the remaining magical power began to decrease with a grinding sound.
This magic is a Beginner-level Support Magic, but it fires an energy bolt to intercept magic that is directed (locked) towards oneself.
The massive reduction in magical power was due to activating the maximum limit of 30 intercepting bolts all at once.
The activated energy bolt flew towards the Fire Arrow.
The intercepting energy bolt sensed the locked magical power and began to eliminate the Fire Arrows one after another.
I’ve taken down half of them… but my magical power has dropped to about 30 percent… and the distance is closing in…
Without time to think of a way to intercept the remaining 50, the Fire Arrows were closing in.
I unleashed an Ice Shot forward without chanting.
The Ice Shot scatters ice particles at close range; it’s originally a self-defense magic for when enemies close in, but this time I aimed for the attribute cancellation effect against the Fire Arrows.
The Fire Arrow that touched the released ice particles disintegrated due to the attribute effect, scattering into mist.
The Fire Arrows launched by Clayd were eliminated one after another: 40, 30, 20.
I can do this!
Only ten managed to slip through the intercept.
I’ll block the rest with a magical barrier!
The Fire Arrows that slipped through the intercept dove towards me, who was locked on.
To minimize magical power consumption, I expanded the magical barrier to the size of a large shield and activated it with both hands.
Then, I braced myself to catch the incoming Fire Arrow.
Puff, puff, puff.
Crack.
Seven left!
The incoming Fire Arrow was blocked by the magical barrier and disintegrated without dealing any damage.
This impact caused a crack to form in the right side of the barrier.
Then, the remaining Fire Arrows flew in towards the right side with concentrated force.
Puff, puff, puff.
Crack, crack.
Four left!
Please hold on!
There’s no time to reactivate the barrier right now.
I can only hold on with the cracked barrier.
The remaining 4 are diving in.
Puff, puff, puff.
Crack!
It broke!
It didn’t hold, huh.
Damn it, just one more.
The final Fire Arrow suddenly changed its angle and aimed for my face.
Even though its power is suppressed, if it hits my face, I could die.
I desperately covered my face with the remaining left barrier.
Please make it in time!
Puff.
The last Fire Arrow, aiming for my face, dissipated against the left barrier.
Good!
I blocked it!
Now it’s my turn!
”You’re late! Are you sleeping?”
I felt warmth in my abdomen as I heard Clayd’s voice near my ear.
When I turned my gaze, there was a glowing white sphere floating there.
I knew what that sphere was.
”Energy Bomb!!”
The sphere flickered and then exploded.
Moreover, insidiously, it was set to concentrate all the explosion’s energy on my abdomen.
”Ughhh!!”
It seems the power is suppressed enough not to kill me, but a sour liquid is rising from my injured abdomen.
He definitely want to kill me…
”Kent, you really have no combat sense! Blocking a hundred Fire Arrows was impressive, but that choice was the worst. Instead of intercepting a hundred Fire Arrows, if you had distracted my consciousness, I wouldn’t have been able to maintain the guidance and control!”
”Cough… cough… distract your consciousness… Ah, I see.”
”Even if you were going to intercept, you did it half-heartedly. You weren’t even checking where I was, were you?”
”Y-Yeah, that’s true. I thought I blocked it, and then I heard Mr. Clayd’s voice…”
”And before you knew it, there was a bomb in your abdomen, right?”
”Yeah, that’s right.”
Clayd looked at my response with an exasperated expression.
”With that kind of passivity, no matter how strong you are, you won’t win. Kent, you lack assertiveness. I don’t sense any will to cut off the source of the attack. In other words, you’re a coward. For example, like this!”
Clayd carelessly launched a Fire Arrow towards Annabella, who was watching the mock battle nearby.
”Wha-what are you doing!”
I could only watch as the guided Fire Arrow headed toward Annabella.
Annabella’s face was frozen in surprise at the sudden magic aimed at her, but she crouched down to protect her large, swollen belly.
Damn it, what is he thinking!
