Ugno shakes his head in response to my question.
”I must refuse. The failure is plain to see.”

”But there’s a chance Nokin could become a second Gertroud in the east.”
Clayd voices his concern.
”We can’t dismiss that possibility, but the Nokin I met at the conference isn’t an unpredictable presence like Gertroud. If gaining the east satisfies them, they shouldn’t meddle with us. After all, they recognize our leadership at the palace.”
”Hmph, seems like you know how to judge people.”
”Rather, it might be the woman beside him who’s the real mastermind. Nokin is just a strong warrior.”

Clayd looks disappointed.

Thus, our army moved past Nokin’s forces and continued north. When we were just a day’s march away from the fortress, a Dragonian officer sent to scout returned, his expression drastically changed, as he burst into the command tent.
The report he brought was unimaginable.
”Lady Fabulanova! The northern fortress appears to have fallen! Lord Gwain is leading his personal guard in retreat towards True Demon Dukedom! According to deserters, nearly 40 thousand troops trapped inside the fortress have been annihilated. Moreover, using their remains, Gertroud’s army has swelled to nearly 70 thousand with Living Dead! And they’re marching towards us!”
”What?! Seventy thousand?! You’re telling me they turned almost all of Lord Gwain’s troops into Living Dead…?”
That incompetent Gwain… He ran away just because the reinforcements were late… But he’s finished now. He’s lost the trust of Your Majesty and the military, and he won’t be able to recover.
”Almost all of them are Living Dead, huh… Fabulanova, you don’t have to hold back, go all out! They’re already dead, anyway.”
Clayd asked with a savage grin.
”Very well. As a farewell to the nameless Warriors who fell, erase them completely, leaving nothing behind.”
”Sister! Our air squadron is ready! The enemy should be exhausted from taking the fortress. Requesting permission for a First Strike!”
Ugno also got fired up after hearing the report.
The moment he heard the number, he instructed the Dragonia officers to transform into their dragon forms.
As expected, he’s quick to make decisions in battle.
”Permission granted. Take Clayd and burn the Gertroud forces coming this way! The only way to deal with a disease is to burn it away.”
”Understood! Clayd, you ready to go?”

After getting my permission, the two of them hurried off.

I also left the command tent to prepare for battle.

Several days after arriving in the Capital City, the detached palace was ready, and we began our activities as a garrison.
Though, Fabulanova had already taken care of most of the Ghost Clan, so there wasn’t much to do.
”So boring… Oh! I know! Let’s go sightseeing in the lower town!”
”Huh! Wait! Kent, wait! It’s dangerous if you just go wandering around!”
”Aww, but it’s boring… We finally came to a place called the Capital City, I want to do some sightseeing.”
Milly looked panicked at my sudden suggestion.
Unlike the South District, she was worried about the lack of guards protecting me here.
Even though they’re quiet now, there are still many Gwain-supporting nobles here, as well as nobles who joined Fabulanova’s faction, making this a dangerous area.
I understood her concerns, but I wasn’t as alarmed as Milly.
After all, the leaders of both factions were currently away.
And I couldn’t imagine anyone on either side making a move without their approval.
”Sightseeing, huh… Kent… seriously…”
Milly was just about to launch into one of her mother-inherited lectures when Feria, Ines, Est, Seema, Reina, and Miriel suddenly crowded in and pushed her right out of my line of sight.
”Mr. Kent! I know a great place! Come on, let’s go! There’s a fantastic restaurant with delicious wine!”
Est, who’s from Capital City, grabbed my hand.
Wine… I’m not a big fan, but… if it’s Capital City, there might be some good liquor there that I’d like…

”If I cover that amount with military expenses, I won’t be able to buy a single one from tomorrow.”
I tried to pass off the bill for the Scarlet Equipment made by Golerg as a military expense, but Reina rejected it, and I ended up paying for it out of my own pocket, which was just recently.
True, 50 large gold coins is a lot… but it was good Equipment, and the Orga folks were happy too…
”Anyway, Mr. Golerg’s Equipment is top-notch, no doubt about that, but the price isn’t reasonable. So, it would be much cheaper to hire our own blacksmith to make the Equipment. As the military’s procurement officer, I want good Equipment at a low cost.”
”So, is there someone in this Capital City you’re bringing in? But Aida is already here, right?”
”Ms. Aida is a Gunslinger, not a blacksmith. We need someone who can make regular Equipment!”
Reina’s argument made me feel a bit out of my league.
”Ah, I see. Let’s meet them… If they’re skilled, I’ll hire them as the military’s exclusive blacksmith and jeweler.”

With that, Reina grabbed my hand from Est, who was frozen in place.
