Volume 7 Chapter 8 The Lost Magic And The Relic Of The Demon Lord
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The next day, I was buried in preparations for the defense of the Capital City. Meanwhile, news of the Black Dragon army’s defeat poured in, along with reports that Nokin, a general under Gertroud, had defected to the Demon God Emperor’s nation and occupied the large eastern city of Vildestia.
The court nobles were in an uproar. However, Shifa remained unfazed by these reports, dispatching messengers to Fabulanova, Rashid, and Nokin, urging them to join the fight against Gertroud once again.
Meanwhile, a messenger from Nokin arrived at my mother-in-law’s place in the South District.
He sought to establish a non-aggression pact that would respect our territories and requested Elkisa’s approval for Nokin’s appointment as the leader of the Garuda Clan.
My mother-in-law, concerned about the lack of defensive forces, asked for permission to form an alliance with Nokin on the condition that we would advance to conquer the nearby regions of the Demon God Emperor’s territory.
I immediately granted my approval.
Unlike Gertroud, Nokin seemed to be a man who could hold a conversation.
He publicly declared his intent to restore order to the ravaged eastern region plagued by bandits and the armies of the Demon God Emperor.
Curious, I had Nikka investigate further, and while Nokin was undoubtedly a formidable warrior, it turned out that his favorite concubine, a clever woman named Alonsa, was also significantly influential.
It seemed that Nokin’s ability to inflict damage on the Black Dragon army was largely thanks to her cunning.
I thought to myself that if he could stir up Gertroud’s supply lines in the east, I wouldn’t mind him becoming the master of that region.
The alliance talks progressed smoothly, and Nokin’s forces took control of the territories near the South District, leading to the alliance taking effect.
This was thought to return Garuda’s holy land to Elkisa’s hometown, but her domain was utterly destroyed, and most of her clan was executed by Gertroud.
Upon hearing this, Elkisa only acknowledged Nokin’s great chief and officially designated Garuda’s holy land as the temple I was constructing in Westferm.
Nokin seemed content with the great chief’s approval, easily consenting to the holy land matter, and it appeared that a small temple would be built in Fenrir’s domain as the old holy land.
With the peace treaty signed with the Eastern territories, my father-in-law, now the supreme commander, led the entire South District army to our aid and began organizing the defense forces.
As the General Commander of the South District forces, I was entrusted with 8 thousand soldiers.
Sitting as the General Commander, I placed Kondrad as the supreme commander, letting Akebus, Fristoph, Ane, and Charlotte command the troops, and Garvey led a separate detachment of 2 thousand.
I had also mobilized members from the ‘Crimson Bride,’ ‘Black Bullet,’ ‘Black Wing,’ and ‘Red Valkyrie’ to serve as my direct troops under my command.
Now, I was preparing to leave the detached palace, which had been our base.
”Sir Kent, Rosella-Rosana Siblings found something that looks like a room while moving the workshop.”
Annabella reported to me in my room that they had discovered a hidden room in the detached palace.
Rosella-Rosana Siblings had proposed to move this facility to the Capital City when we left the palace, and she had been working on relocating the smelting furnace and the quenching furnace.
”A hidden room? What kind of room?”
”Lady Miriallia and Lady Lina are verifying it now, but it seems to be a treasure vault.”
”A Demon Lord’s treasure vault, huh… His Majesty Shifa did grant permission to use anything from the detached palace, but…”
”Even so, I think we should at least confirm what’s in there. Otherwise, it could cause trouble later.
With your permission, I’d like to conduct a search and create an inventory.”
Annabella advised that we should make an inventory of the treasure vault to avoid any trouble later on.
Certainly, I have permission to use the items from the detached palace, but the Demon Lord’s treasures are another matter…
”Anyway, let’s report to His Majesty first.”
”Understood. I’ll send an urgent messenger to obtain permission.”
Annabella dashes out of the room, and I decide to head to the site as well.
* * *
The treasure vault is located behind the smelting furnace, with its entrance cleverly hidden within the workshop’s walls.
It was such a well-disguised entrance that I doubt we would have found it without moving the furnace.
”Hey, Lina. Is this really the treasure vault?”
”Yeah. The Demon Lord who built this detached palace 5 generations ago was a big fan of the first Demon Lord, Orphée Bleu. He was famous for his collection of magic composition formulas and Demon Lord relics. But after his death, the collection went missing. Maybe he hid it here?”
”Are there only important items? There aren’t any traps, right?”
Milly and Beatrice carefully check for traps.
While they do, the messenger who went to the palace returns with Shifa’s reply.
The reply stated that any items found in the detached palace could be given to Kent as an advance reward for this defense battle.
”What did His Majesty say?”
Lina asks me as I read the reply.
”We’re allowed to take anything that can boost our combat strength. Anything else should be returned to His Majesty. Annabella, start preparing the inventory.”
”It’s already done.”
Annabella had already prepared the paper and pen.
”As expected. Milly, can we enter the treasure vault?”
It seemed Milly had managed to disarm the trap, and she held her hands up, forming a large circle.
”Alright, let’s explore the treasury. Aside from me, we have Aurelia, Lina, Milly, and Beatrice, all of whom have Identification abilities.”
”Understood.”
”Got it.”
I decided to lead the 4 of them into the treasury, now that the trap had been disarmed.
* * *
When I opened the door to the treasury, there were shelves filled with scrolls covered in magic inscriptions, and equipment said to be relics of the Demon Lord displayed prominently.
”It’s dusty in here.”
Dust had piled up inside the treasury, and a unique scent of parchment and paper filled the air.
”It looks like about 80 percent is made up of magic inscriptions, while the relics of the Demon Lord make up the other 20 percent.”
Milly was assessing the total amount of treasure while observing her surroundings.
”Can Bea go back? It’s so dusty, my nose is itching.”
Beatrice walked in front, sneezing softly as she checked for any more traps.
”The magic inscriptions on these shelves are things that can be sold at the Guild. They may be expensive, but they’re not impossible to obtain.”
Lina had already started identifying the scrolls stacked on the shelves.
”Oh! Isn’t that the hilt of a mana sword used by the first His Majesty the Demon Lord? This sword generates its blade through magical power, and its sharpness changes based on the wielder’s magic strength, enhancing the power of their spells. The original has vanished, but I’ve heard that only one of the 3 existing replicas has been confirmed… this might be that replica…”
Aurelia tenderly cradled the sword hilt that lay at the back of the treasury.
”Wow, what a treasure. Want to give it a try?”
Aurelia waved her hands, declining the offer.
”N-No! Using it would drain an enormous amount of magic at once, and someone with magic power like mine would run out instantly and dry up!”
”Whoa! Is it that intense on magic consumption?”
”Yes. According to the literature, only the second Demon Lord Bendavar and Ms. Lina’s ancestor, Lady Arsella, have been able to wield it.”
The Mana Sword was a weapon that chose its user.
I possessed the power of Divine Magic, holding a title from the gods, but I wasn’t confident I could handle the weapon before me.
”Is it really that strong?”
”Yes, the blade extends as long as the magical power lasts, and it’s said to slice through armor made of the hardest demonium steel in the world.”
So, in exchange for consuming vast amounts of magical power, I could gain the strongest offensive capability.
It seemed like a weapon Orphée Bleu would favor.
”For now, let’s add it to the inventory. Is there anything else?”
As Lina rummaged through the shelves, she picked up a scroll and began to tremble violently.
”T-This is… the Divine Magic written by Demon Lord Orphée Bleu… right? This script is definitely Orphée Bleu’s handwriting. Divine Thunderbolt… I’ve never heard of such magic… no, it’s Divine Magic.”
I hadn’t expected to find a scroll of Divine Magic.
Divine Magic consumed an enormous amount of magical power, being a technique from the Celestial Kingdom before Orphée Bleu downgraded it to regular magic, but it held incredible power.
I was the only person who could use Divine Magic on the Magic Continent, having acquired the Creation of the Universe.
”Divine Magic, huh… Can I take it? It seems like I’m the only one who can use it anyway, and I want to get stronger for the battle against Gertroud.”
”You… are you really planning to become a god? A scroll of Divine Magic is an incredibly rare artifact!”
”For now, if I memorize it, I can leave behind the structure of the spell. I just need to write down the incantation when I activate it, right?”
”That’s true, but… this is the original work of Demon Lord Orphée Bleu! Kent’s messy handwriting won’t do!”
Lina won’t let go of the Divine Magic scroll.
Knowing there was no other choice, I signaled Milly to hold Lina in a tight embrace.
”Ah! Dear Big Sister Milly! No! Don’t! It’s a precious document! Kent’s messy handwriting won’t do!”
”Just give up… this is a necessary sacrifice to win.”
With Lina held tightly, I snatched the Divine Magic scroll from her hands.
Then, I opened the scroll.
A tingling sensation raced through my body as the characters inside the scroll swayed gently.
”…gathered… magic element. Become the divine lightning of the gods… and destroy everything…’Divine Thunderbolt!’”
As I chanted, the Divine Magic activated, and an icon for Divine Thunderbolt appeared alongside the icons from the Creation of the Universe.
Choosing it added a round target site.
I figured this range marked the effectiveness of the Divine Magic.
As I increased my mana consumption, the area expanded.
It seems like it won’t work unless I’m in an open space…
I wanted to test out my newly acquired Divine Magic, but for now, I decided to continue exploring the treasure vault.
”Ah, ah, ahhhh! The original scroll by Demon Lord Orphée Bleu!”
Lina cradled the now-blank scroll, crying her heart out.
Feeling a bit sorry for her, I wrote the incantation for Divine Thunderbolt on the blank scroll in my own handwriting.
”Here, cheer up with this.”
”Noooo! This is no good! Besides, it lacks mana, so it means nothing!”
Come to think of it, they had said that creating incantations required extensive preparation and a lot of mana… Simply writing it down wouldn’t make it a scroll after all…
Watching Lina in her frenzy, I felt pity for her and proposed I could cover for it during my night duties.
”Lina. I’m really sorry. I’ll make it up to you tonight, so please forgive me.”
Lina froze at my words.
”You’re right. Replacing the original work of Demon Lord Orphée Bleu won’t be cheap.”
Lina’s eyes, bloodshot, slowly turned toward me, making a GRR-GRR sound.
”Alright, I’ll keep you company until you’re satisfied.”
”Ugh, but only this time, okay?!”
Lina succumbed to the temptation of pleasure.
We continued our exploration of the treasure vault, discovering numerous magic inscriptions and newly discovered ones, which were thought to be lost magic.
We also found equipment with magic enchantments and armor, which were successively added to the inventory.
However, we didn’t include the scroll of Divine Magic in the inventory.
After identifying the treasures, we began selecting items that we could use.
I had already obtained Divine Thunderbolt, a Divine Magic, and I thought I didn’t need anything else, but Aurelia insisted that I should borrow a mana sword for a Defense Tool.
So I decided to use the mana sword, even though it was a valuable replica.
In addition, Lina obtained Magma Control, a fire-attribute Advanced-level Attack Magic, which was certified by the Guild as lost magic due to the lack of successors.
Carly obtained Wind Chain, a wind-attribute Advanced-level magic, and Mega Quake, an earth-attribute Advanced-level magic, which were also certified as lost magic.
These 3 magics had no current users and were not in stock at the Guild, so if Lina and Carly could rewrite the magic inscriptions, it would be a fortune.
Finally, Lana, who had rushed over from the healing branch, obtained Mana Heal, an Advanced-level Healing Magic, which had also lost its successors, through Healing Magic.
The other equipment wasn’t very strong, and even if there was something, it was specialized for the Demon Lord, so I decided to pass on it.
”I guess this is about all I can take. For now, let’s give it a test shot… It’d be a problem if it doesn’t work when we really need it.”
”That’s true. We need to check how much power it has.”
”My lord, is it alright if I go all out? With advanced-level magic, the amount of magic element released will be quite significant…”
”It’s wartime, so it can’t be helped. But let’s try to do it in a place without any houses. Annabella, I’m sorry, but can I leave the cleanup to you?”
”Understood. I will send it to His Majesty Shifa.”
