Volume 8 Chapter 8 Interlude: South District Marriage Tale
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
As the General’s hand came swooping down, the women, brimming with fighting spirit, charged en masse towards the men they had their eyes on.
Their expressions were so terrifying that even the Living Dead would run away barefoot.
”Your Excellency Garvey! The enemy is swarming in! What should we do! Give us instructions! Instructions!”
Dumbstruck by the sight of the women, my subordinates turned to me for orders.
”Hey! Are you still my men! Each of you should be able to handle ten of them! If you see a colleague surrounded by women, the one with fewer should support them! Remember, this is a battle we cannot afford to lose!”
”Ohhh!”
Following my instructions, my men formed ranks to face the charging women.
But their formation was easily shattered.
”Ahh! It’s Vesley! Ahh! Stop! Don’t pull me in! Your Excellency Garvey! Ahh! Help me, Your Excellency! Aaahhhh!”
One by one, as each of my men was swallowed by the crowd of women, the ranks we had formed began to vanish.
Soon, all that could be heard were the faint groans emanating from the group of women.
Minutes later, the formation my men had created was gone without a trace, and all that remained were glimpses of my subordinates flitting about within the mass of women.
What a destructive force… To easily crush the men who had crossed death’s door in the Capital City… The women of the South District cannot be underestimated…
I was terrified of the matchmaking power of the South District women.
After a while, the General, who had finished greeting his neighbors, came over.
”Well done… With that kind of push, I’d say most of the participants today will be married within days. My mother-in-law told me there were about 3 thousand hopefuls who wanted to join. I might have to ask you to organize a second event, or there might be a riot.”
”…Phew, even though I’ve been in the South District for over a year now… I never imagined the push would be this strong. Margrid was always a modest character, too.”
”Oh, speaking of Marguerite, I heard she’s pregnant. Congratulations! Looks like you’re joining the ranks of fatherhood now.”
”Word travels fast… I suppose it’s because the clinic belongs to Lady Lana. It’s only natural that the General hears about it eventually.”
My wife, Marguerite, was indeed expecting.
I had sensed something was off with her recently, so when I took her to the clinic, it was confirmed that she was 3 months along.
”By the way, Marguerite had a little request for me.”
”Huh? My wife asked the General for a favor?”
The General was grinning as he looked at me.
I had learned through our time together that when he wore that smile, it usually meant he was hatching some kind of scheme.
As he waved his hand, ten women circled around me.
”You see, Marguerite is feeling quite burdened with her pregnancy and is in need of some nighttime company. She asked me to help her choose a suitable concubine. These girls here are the top ten applicants I’ve selected, so you can pick any number of them. Garvey is also looking forward to seeing how you handle things.”
With that, the General left me surrounded by the women.
”Wait, General! Hold on! I only want Marguerite…”
In that split second, a wave of intimidation pierced through my body.
”Oh? Just Lady Marguerite, you say? Does that mean we’re all unwanted here?”
One of the women shot me a sharp glare.
She was a petite woman, likely in her twenties, clearly from the Majin Clan.
”No, it’s not that… Unfortunately, unlike the General, I can’t allow myself to have relationships with multiple women…”
”No worries! I’m more than capable of getting along with Lady Marguerite. I’d be honored to treat her as your primary wife, and as long as I can assist her in the military or on the battlefield, I’d be perfectly satisfied.”
Pushing aside the other 9, the Majin Clan woman stepped forward, and suddenly I recognized her.
As I stared at her face intently, I began to recall exactly who she was.
”Ahhh! Mira Elanbit! Is that really you? I almost didn’t recognize you with all that makeup and that beautiful dress!”
A small-framed woman from the Majin Clan stood before me, the only officer at Felward Fortress when I had to retreat there after losing my squad to the Beast Monsters.
She had transferred command to me, allowing me to take shelter in the fortress.
The transfer had been necessary because she was gravely injured and unable to lead, but by the time an envoy from the General arrived, she had already returned to Abyss Vena.
”So you finally remembered, General Garvey. You wouldn’t say you forgot that promise we made back then, would you?”
I desperately tried to recall the words from that time in my mind.
They were meant to give Mira, who was on the verge of breaking down from her injuries, a glimmer of hope to keep on living.
I had encouraged her with the words, “Once I return from Felward, I’ll definitely make you my wife.” Remembering that now made the blood drain from my face.
I had completely forgotten until just now.
The other 9 members who had been watching me quickly faded into the background, avoiding any involvement.
”Wait! I haven’t forgotten! I remember it well! It was… let’s drink together once I’m back from Felward, right? Yes, that’s it. I’m sure that’s how it went.”
Whoosh!
A blade of wind whipped past my face.
”That’s a slightly different takeaway from what I heard. Surely it must be due to your memory being hazy. I thought you said I should become your wife, but I suppose that’s just a difference in perspective?”
A menacing aura was rising from behind Mira, swirling ominously.
”Wait! We can talk this out! I have Marguerite now… I’m sorry, but with you…”
Whoosh!
”That’s why I’m saying I would be perfectly fine being a concubine! The Elanbit family was slaughtered by Gertroud. I’m the only one left, recovering from my injuries! If I could just have Garvey’s lineage to revive our house, that would be enough!”
Mira confessed that she had lost her family in the bloody New Year’s festival instigated by Gertroud.
Like Marguerite, she was willing to offer her body to me for the revival of her dwindling family name.
”What the hell! Do you think I’m just some breeding stallion?!”
”That’s right! Strong and smart men are a rarity in the South District, so we can’t let Lady Marguerite hog them all to herself. I’m already in direct negotiations with Lord Margrave.”
Mira was dropping bombshells left and right.
She said she’d already met with Marguerite and was in direct talks.
”Wha──Are you kidding me? What are you doing?”
”Lady Marguerite laughed and welcomed me as an ally. I’ve formed an alliance with her for the sake of reviving my house.”
I was already surrounded, with no way out.
If my wife, Marguerite, was giving her approval, then I had no say in the matter.
”Margrave is giving her okay, huh?”
Mira nodded with a gulp.
”Aaahhh! Can’t be helped! You’re in this too, you know! I never dreamed I’d marry off 2 noble daughters! For now, you’re my adjutant and bodyguard. Since you brought it up, I’m counting on you to handle things if I’m called to battle.”
”Yes, I understand. I will give it my all, sir.”
And so, I welcomed my second bride-to-be, another hope for the revival of my house.
Meanwhile, my subordinates, after being ravaged by these carnivorous women, came back to the barracks in tatters.
But every single one of them who attended this party ended up engaged within 3 days.
Seeing their peers’ success, the other subordinates gained confidence, and at the second event, 3 hundred men, and at the third, 5 hundred men, were ensnared by the hands of South District women.
As a result, the bachelor rate of the South District Margrave’s domain began to decline.
Mila Elanbit, 25, was a noblewoman from the Elranbit family in the South District.
Raised as a lady, she longed to become a military officer—and she did, earning a post at Felward Fort. Skilled in combat, she gained the trust of her soldiers.
But disaster struck.
A horde of Beast Monsters attacked Felward Fort. Mila fought bravely but suffered grave injuries.
With the officer missing, Garvey—who had fled into the fortress—was appointed as the Elite-level commander.
While recovering in Abyss Vena, tragedy hit again. Gertroud murdered her entire family, leaving her completely alone.
Through a cruel twist of fate, she ended up as Garvey’s concubine.
