Chapter 143 Astonishing Fact

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Haruto, what are you going to do about university?”

Akane asked, her voice gentle but still laced with concern.

”…I plan to go back,” Haruto answered, trying to sound more confident than he felt.

After being drained by the two of them, Akane casually asked the question that had been on her mind. Haruto paused for a moment, his eyes drifting to the window.

 ”I think it’ll be fine, but I’m a little worried…”

”The on-site training is still left, right? The emergency department training?”

Akane’s voice was soft but insistent. Haruto chuckled, trying to ease their worries.

”I’m fine. I’ve known about it for a while, but I’ve just lacked the resolve…” He looked down for a second, then continued. “I’ve thought about being able to help but not being able to act… but nothing prepared me for seeing it with my own eyes.”

”Got it! If anything happens, make sure to tell me!” Akane said, her tone light but serious.

Haruto nodded. “I will. But for now, I should head home soon.”

”Eh? …Why?” Akane asked, looking confused.

”I’m taking time off from work too, and my dad’s at home alone,” he explained, feeling a little guilty for not explaining earlier.

”…Ah, I see,” Akane said quietly, understanding now.

Though Haruto felt a pang of regret at parting so soon, each person had their own life. It couldn’t be helped.

”Well then, I’ll stay here until Harue-san comes back,” Akane said, smiling slyly.

”Eh?” Haruto blinked, his mind catching up with her words.

”Because if I’m not here, you won’t be able to relax, right?” Akane winked mischievously.

Haruto flushed slightly, trying to avoid making eye contact. “…That’s… true…”

Harue grinned and leaned back. “Alright then, I’ll just take a couple more days to unwind here with you.”

Haruto sighed but smiled. He could use the break, too.

”Mom, take it a little slower, okay?”

”Hm, then I guess I’ll rest for another two days…”

Haruto just nodded, feeling a little overwhelmed but at peace. He needed a break from everything. Tomorrow, he’d get some rest, and then it was back to work.

After seeing Harue off, Haruto’s thoughts turned back to the situation at the hospital. He had already contacted the university and was planning to go back to school tomorrow. There was still the unfinished business of the on-site training, but first, he needed to apologize.

He stood before the doctors and nurses, trying to find the right words.

”I’m sorry… I’ll never make the same mistake again.”

A senior doctor raised an eyebrow.

”Did you forget the unspoken rules about family members? You know better than anyone that we don’t operate on our own, right?”

Haruto’s heart sank. He knew that, of course. But that wasn’t why he was here. He just wanted to make things right.

”Thank you for coming to apologize. Now, get ready for tomorrow. You’ve got work to do.”

”Yeah, I’ll do my best,” Haruto replied, bowing.

But as he was about to leave, the doctor called out to him.

”Oh, one more thing. Make sure you apologize to the patient. They’re still unconscious, but you did cause them some trouble.”

 ”Eh?” Haruto blinked in surprise.

”You know, even if they’re unconscious, they can hear us. You should’ve learned that in school, right?” The doctor gave him a pointed look.

Haruto nodded, though he still felt confused. It wasn’t the hearing that shocked him.

It was something else—the strange feeling he got when his mind suddenly flashed to those words.

[You cannot bring back the dead.]
