Chapter 193 Nana’s Interview

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”I knew it! You should have told me sooner,” Nana exclaimed, her eyes wide with realization.

”I thought it was the same name when I saw the job listing,” Haruto said, rubbing the back of his neck, “but I wasn’t sure until we actually spoke face to face…”

Back in elementary school, Haruto had once been stopped on the way home by three girls from his class. Among them was Akamoto Nana, who confessed to liking him. Since she was moving to Hokkaido after graduation, she asked Haruto if he would go out with her until then.

They dated for about six months. One day, when they tried to take their relationship to the next level, something unexpected happened. Haruto’s body wasn’t quite compatible with Nana’s—it made it impossible for them to go through with it. In the end, Haruto couldn’t be Nana’s first.

Even after Nana moved away, the two kept exchanging letters until around the time they graduated middle school. But then, without warning, the letters stopped. Haruto, unsure what had happened, eventually stopped writing too.

”You don’t have to use such formal language,” Haruto said with a small smile.

”N-no, this is still an interview,” Nana replied, her posture stiffening slightly.

”If it’s Nana-chan, I’d hire you even without an interview,” Haruto said teasingly.

His hiring standards weren’t based on skill or experience. His only requirement was simple—cute or beautiful receptionists.

”I’m happy to hear that,” Nana said, smiling nervously, “but I want you to decide after properly listening to me!”

”…I see. Understood,” Haruto nodded. “Then, let’s begin the interview.”

 ”Yes! Thank you very much!”

”First,” Haruto asked, his expression turning more serious, “can I ask how much mobility you have in your body?”

”Yes,” Nana said clearly. “I cannot move my lower body at all.”

”By ‘not at all,’ do you mean you’re completely paralyzed from the waist down?”

 ”Yes, that’s right.”

”…So that would mean around the T10 vertebrae? Since it’s thoracic?”

”Eh!? You know about that?” she blinked in surprise. “Yes, it’s T11.”

The human body is supported by the spine, which is composed of vertebrae. Running through the center of these vertebrae is the spinal cord, the pathway that controls movement and sensation. From neck to tailbone, the vertebrae are divided into four parts: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral.

The “T” Haruto mentioned refers to the thoracic region, and the number indicates the specific vertebra. In Nana’s case, the eleventh.

Injuries in the T9 to T11 region affect leg movement and reduce sensation below the navel. The higher the injury, the more severe the impact. Damage in the cervical vertebrae can even lead to loss of independent breathing.

”I manage a massage parlor now,” Haruto explained calmly, “but I also hold a medical license.”

”What!? You’re a doctor, Haruto-kun!?” Nana blurted out, completely forgetting her polite tone.

”Yes. So I understand the basics.”

”S-so… that includes things like excretion too…?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

”Of course. Have you already made any arrangements?”

”Y-yes! I always make sure to go at night…”

Nana’s injury at T11 meant she had no sensation below her navel. That included the urge to urinate or defecate. Without preventive care, accidents were unavoidable.

 ”B-but… there’s still a chance something might happen…”

”That’s nothing to worry about,” Haruto said gently.

If she let that fear control her, she’d never feel confident enough to go outside. Haruto hoped she could feel safe working with him.

 ”Are you using a catheter?”

”Yes. I’m currently considering using an indwelling catheter. But if it’s a concern, I can switch to a DIB cap.”

An indwelling catheter is a soft tube inserted through the urethra into the bladder to continuously drain urine. It requires a bag or container to collect the liquid. Though slightly more visible, it’s easier on the body.

The DIB cap works like a lid on the catheter, requiring regular visits to the toilet. It helps conceal the equipment, but can stress the bladder if not used with care.

When Nana said “if it’s a concern,” she meant that the urine collection bag might be seen by customers. She was willing to switch to the DIB cap for appearance’s sake.

”It’s best not to try everything perfectly from the beginning,” Haruto said with a calm voice. “I think starting with the method that’s easiest on your body is wise. If that doesn’t work, we can look into other options.”

 ”Thank you very much…”

”The receptionist job isn’t very demanding. As long as you can move your upper body, I don’t think there will be any issues.”

”I will give it everything I have,” Nana said, bowing her head slightly. “I may cause some trouble… but if you’re willing to hire me, I would be truly grateful.”

”We would be more than happy to have you,” Haruto replied sincerely.

With that, Nana’s interview came to an end. Her older sister, who had quietly observed the entire time, let out a small breath of relief. As if waiting for the right moment, she finally spoke to Haruto.

”Um… would it be possible for you to take a look at Nana’s legs?”
