Chapter 197 The Method Haruto Thinks Of

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Okay then, Mom. For this, please answer ‘no’ to all my questions, alright?” Haruto said, leaning forward with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

”Yes, I understand,” his mother replied with a calm nod.

 ”—Are you male?”

 ”No.”

 ”—Are you female?”

 ”No.”

 ”—Was breakfast steak?”

 ”No.”

 ”—Did you have sex yesterday?”

 ”No.”

”—Did you, uh… do anything by yourself yesterday?”

 ”…No.”

”—Do you want to have sex?”

”…H-Hey, Haru-kun! What kind of question is that!?”

”Haha, sorry, sorry,” Haruto said, raising both hands in apology. “It’s just a little test.”

The experiment Haruto had in mind was simple: he wanted to see if he could detect lies.

There’s a theory that lying triggers certain signals in the brain—tiny changes in neural activity that result from emotions like guilt or excitement. If these reactions were somehow connected to his ability, maybe he could sense the difference between truth and lies.

”What made you suddenly want to figure out if someone’s lying?” his mom asked, narrowing her eyes slightly.

”I was thinking about that ability I mentioned yesterday. If I could tell who really wants to have treatment, it’d be a huge help.”

”Can you give me an example?”

”Like… maybe asking someone with a small physical condition something personal. To see if they’re hiding anything.”

 ”Is that really your reason?”

 ”Y-Yeah, of course it is!”

Haruto’s mom gave him a look that said she wasn’t convinced, but didn’t press further.

Honestly, Haruto’s lie-detecting skill seemed far less reliable than Harue’s intuition. Still, if he could use it to sense even a trace of dishonesty—especially in tricky situations—it might help avoid unnecessary problems.

Even if it just helped a little with knowing when something was okay to try… that would be useful.

Though he kept that part to himself.

In the end, the experiment didn’t go well.

Haruto realized that it wasn’t the act of lying that caused the reaction—it was the emotion behind it. Whether it was anxiety or excitement, the brain secreted different substances depending on how the person felt about lying.

For example, if someone felt guilty or anxious about lying, their brain might release cortisol, a stress hormone. But if they felt excited—like lying would bring them something good—they might get a hit of dopamine instead.

This wasn’t something you could fully grasp just by studying medicine. It dipped straight into psychology.

”Well, even if that’s true,” his mom said, crossing her arms, “I think you should stop trying to read people’s lies.”

 ”Huh? Why?”

”Imagine if I could lie without you noticing,” she said gently. “How would you feel?”

 ”Eh… I-I guess I wouldn’t like it.”

”Exactly. And if people think you’re always trying to see through them, they might start avoiding you.”

Just because you could detect lies didn’t mean you should. Some lies were told out of kindness, after all.

”I don’t like that idea either,” Haruto said with a small sigh. “Maybe I should stop trying to see through lies and find another way.”

”You’re still thinking about something, aren’t you?”

 ”Well… yeah.”

What Haruto had in mind now was something else—risk distribution.

Take someone like Yuna, for example. Medically, she was considered cured. But if she still felt pain or discomfort, and something like massage or pressure therapy helped relieve it… that wouldn’t be strange at all.

This time, Yuna’s case became widely known only because she was famous, and it had turned into an incident.

But if someone claimed that cancer had shrunk or been cured through massage, people would obviously doubt it.

That’s why Haruto thought: where’s a place where even that kind of miracle might be accepted?

 The answer… was the hospital.

”Ah, so you’re planning to involve Yui-san and the others,” his mother said, catching on immediately.

”That’s right, Mom!” Haruto said with a bright grin.

With a hospital right next door, they could simply say the treatment happened there. Even if another hospital had refused the patient, if they recovered here, it would only raise the reputation of the doctors involved.

Of course, a hospital wasn’t a place where anything could go—there were interns, visitors, and inspections. But if they talked things through with Yui and the others, it might just work out.

If the hospital staff were allies, it would be totally different from doing secret treatments like they did at the university hospital.

And in two more years, Akane would finish her specialist training. Miyoshi Clinic, which currently only had internal medicine and pediatrics, would open a gynecology department once she returned.

(If we gain more recognition before then… the new department might get lots of patients. And then maybe—)

Maybe… more women would come around who wouldn’t mind doing something a little naughty.

No matter what, Haruto’s desire to experience that kind of thing wasn’t going away anytime soon.
