Chapter 102 The Ant King
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
When Sayumi Mineyama reunited with Yukina Yuki and the others, she was shocked to hear about Iwaya’s death. She couldn’t fully process the sudden loss.
At the same time, Yukina and the group learned about Takuma Sada’s passing. However, his body had already been covered by a tent by Mineyama, who had quietly arranged a respectful funeral.
Yukina and the others chose not to look at his cold, lifeless face. The circumstances around his death made it easier to avoid.
(We need to find Mizutani and Sakagami fast… We need to get out of this tunnel…)
As Mineyama thought this, she saw a shadow coming from the direction Yukina and the others had come from. Squinting, she recognized Mizutani and Sakagami approaching.
”Are you two okay?!” Mineyama asked, rushing toward them. But the two were angry as they spoke.
”It was horrible… Damn it!” Mizutani growled.
”That bastard Sanai… I’ll kill him!” Sakagami added, full of rage.
Hearing Sanai’s name, who was supposed to be dead, stunned the group. They stopped, trying to make sense of what they had just heard.
”Huh? What? …Sanai? Are you talking about that loner Sanai?” someone mumbled.
”Why would you be talking about someone who’s dead?”
”Are you two okay? We’ve been stuck in this dark place for so long… Did you lose your minds?” another voice asked.
But Mizutani and Sakagami kept going, their voices getting louder with frustration.
”Shut up!” Mizutani snapped. “We saw him! Sanai is alive!”
”Yeah! That bastard attacked us!” Sakagami shouted.
The others stood still, confused. “Wait, are you saying Sanai came back as a ghost?” someone asked, their voice trembling.
”No,” Mizutani replied. “We were just caught off guard!”
Sakagami jumped in, his voice heated. “Exactly! Don’t think we’re weak! If we hadn’t been surprised, Sanai wouldn’t have stood a chance!”
”Hold on! Listen to yourselves!” Mineyama interrupted. “Sanai is alive? What do you mean?”
Before anyone could respond, the ground beneath them shook violently, like an earthquake. The whole group felt it, and panic spread.
The girls screamed, some huddling together, others trying to hide from the fear. The boys focused more on staying steady, looking around for answers.
”What’s happening?” one boy yelled. “What do we do now?”
Everyone struggled to stay calm when a loud cracking sound came from the far end of the cavern. The wall, far but huge, started to crack open, and everyone froze as they heard rocks breaking.
Then, a giant creature emerged from the broken wall: a massive, winged ant, at least twenty meters long. It stepped into the cavern with a loud crash.
”Wait… What is that?” Mineyama gasped, shaking in disbelief.
Yuuki stared in shock. “Is that… an ant? A giant one?!”
But it wasn’t alone. From its legs, more two-legged, ant-like monsters appeared, each one bigger than the last. The same terrifying creatures that had hunted them before. They were back.
”Of course, the big one shows up with the swarm,” Mineyama muttered, sweat on her face. She could see not just magic-wielding ants but bigger ones with polearms and axes.
They were surrounded—trapped.
The giant winged ant let out a deafening roar, sending chills down their spines. The swarm surged forward, charging at them.
”Dammit… we have no choice!” Mineyama said through gritted teeth, ready to fight.
The students, on the edge of despair, were now filled with new determination, thanks to Mineyama’s words. The battle was about to begin.
Without wasting time, Mineyama activated her Weapon Skill. A flash of silver light blasted one group of monsters away, their bodies disintegrating with the impact.
One by one, the other students followed, using their Weapon Skills to strike the invaders. But these attacks couldn’t be used endlessly. After each use, they needed time to recover, making every strike count.
”Yaaahhh!!”
”Dammit! Cover me!”
”Stay back, you damn ants!”
”How many are there?!”
”Quit whining! Focus on the enemy!”
The students pushed forward, breaking through the enemy defenses bit by bit. But no matter how many they took down, more kept appearing from the depths.
”This is never-ending!” Mineyama shouted, frustration growing. “Listen up! We need to stay together! No one gets left behind—I’ll take the rear!”
Mineyama quickly made a decision. “Yuuki, help me support the group. Lead the girls with long-range attacks and get them moving fast! We have to make it out alive, no matter what!”
Yuuki hesitated, pale-faced. “Sayumi-chan! You can’t be serious… Are you planning on sacrificing yourself?!”
Mineyama shook her head fiercely. “No! That’s not it, Yukina! You’re the only one with the strength to lead them! If you don’t step up, we’ll all be wiped out. You’re the only one who can do this!”
She grabbed Yuuki’s hands and looked him in the eye. “Go now! You’re the one who can save us. I promise we’ll all make it out alive. I swear it!”
With tears in her eyes, Yukina nodded softly. “I’ll do it… I’ll make sure we all survive, Sayumi-chan!”
With that, Yukina ran to the group of girls, ready to lead them out of danger. Mineyama watched her go, her heart heavy with the weight of the sacrifice, but filled with hope that they could all survive.
