Chapter 109 Dinner with King Torygg
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Today, for some reason, King Torygg had invited Ayumu to a dinner. He couldn’t help but wonder why the sudden invitation. With some curiosity, he accepted.
He donned the finest clothes, the ones he had worn when dining with Mr. Baldric, and headed to the hall at the appointed time.
When Ayumu arrived, the long banquet table was already set, covered with a white cloth, and the royal attendants were standing by, waiting for the king.
”The king should be here shortly. Please, take a seat, Lord Sanai,” one of the attendants said, pulling out a chair for him. Ayumu sat down, and as he did, a napkin was placed on his lap.
After a short while, King Torygg entered. Ayumu considered standing, but the king motioned for him to remain seated, so he waited as Torygg settled into his own chair.
”King Torygg, thank you for this opportunity to dine with you. It’s truly an honor, Your Majesty,” Ayumu said, formally greeting the king.
Torygg smiled as he sat. “Ah, well met, Sanai. I invited you here today to have a little chat.”
They continued eating, exchanging pleasantries about the food. “How is the seasoning? Is it to your liking?” the king asked.
”Yes, it’s very delicious, Your Majesty,” Ayumu replied, enjoying the food while feeling a growing sense of curiosity. What is this conversation really about?
After a few minutes of light conversation, King Torygg finally asked the question that had been on his mind.
”By the way… Sanai, your knowledge stands out among humans. Where did you acquire such education?”
Ayumu paused, confused. “Pardon? I don’t recall sharing my humble knowledge with Your Majesty, so… may I ask why you believe this?”
Torygg’s question seemed out of the blue, but Ayumu quickly realized what was going on. “Actually, the kingdom of Yugan asked us to verify if there were any technical errors in the books you are writing. When I personally inspected the documents sent to Yugan, I was impressed by the depth of your knowledge.”
Ayumu’s confusion cleared. “Ah, so you’ve already seen my materials? I didn’t expect you to review them. It’s an honor to know that I didn’t embarrass myself,” Ayumu said with a laugh.
He then considered how best to explain his knowledge. Could he say he came from another world and have that be believable?
He decided to try his luck and asked casually, “Your Majesty, if I were to tell you that I came from another world, would you believe me?”
Torygg paused for a moment before answering, “Well… even if that were true, I would only believe in what I see with my own eyes.”
Ayumu was somewhat disappointed, but it made sense. Being told by a stranger, especially a demi-human, that he came from another world was hardly believable.
Torygg then added, “Well, if you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine. I wasn’t really interested in that. I actually wanted to discuss something else.”
Ayumu couldn’t help but wonder, Then what was he getting at?
”Let’s talk about something else,” King Torygg said, shifting the conversation. “Do you think we’ll ever see a day when humans can fly through the sky using machines?”
Ayumu blinked in confusion, taken aback by the sudden, unexpected question. His mind grasped the question’s meaning, but he couldn’t immediately understand why it was being asked.
”Wait… What?” Ayumu blurted out, too stunned by the randomness of the question.
Torygg, looking slightly irritated, repeated himself. “I asked if you think humans will ever fly through the sky using machines. Were you listening to me?”
Ayumu quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, Your Majesty. I was just… surprised. I never expected you to ask me something like that, so I wanted to understand the reasoning behind it.”
Torygg seemed to accept the answer, and after a moment of silence, he reflected aloud, “When will humans be able to fly through the sky?…”
Ayumu leaned forward, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. “I’m not sure when, but if the right technology and manpower are available, I believe that one day, humans will surely be able to control the sky with machines.”
His words were simple, yet they carried a genuine conviction that this was possible with enough innovation.
Torygg listened carefully and then nodded, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. “Hmm, you may be right… There’s potential in that, isn’t there?”
Ayumu smiled, feeling a sense of accomplishment. The conversation, though unexpected, had sparked something in both of them. Little did Ayumu know, this casual discussion about flying machines would resonate in ways he couldn’t yet foresee.
